OOC: Everyone please respond to this thread with your active characters. Commanders, you are welcome to post but please take a back seat. When you reply, please write as though your characters are standing before Duran, directly in front of the stage.

IC:

Duran took a deep breath as he looked out over the gathering before him. It was midmorning, and they were meeting in the orchard. He stood on a raised wooden platform, quickly but sturdily assembled out of wood. The crowd was seated on log benches that were arranged among the trees. All eyes were on him as he stood center stage. His wife, Laurel, stood at his right and held the fort’s banner, which fluttered slightly in the warm breeze. On his left stood his daughter, Avirly. They were all dressed in their finest. Laurel wore a crisp white tunic over a white skirt and blue apron with matching ribbon trim. Avirly was similarly dressed, though her tunic and skirt were a light gray and her apron and ribbon were green. She also wore a wreath of small red flowers on top of her head, delicately resting on her ears. Duran was in full summer uniform: short sleeved white linen shirt, gray tunic, black belt. His black armband was in place, and his High Commanders pin shone in the sunlight. About his head he wore a golden circlet and at his waist rested his rapier.

Again he took another breath and enjoyed the sweet smells of summer. The orchard was beautiful this time of year, and he was happy to be holding this occasion outside. A hint of a smile kept appearing at the edges of his lips. He and Laurel exchanged glances. She smiled openly.

He knew this was going to be a special day for those that stood directly in front of him. The warriors stood at attention. An air of excitement was everywhere, and still Duran said nothing.

He let them wait a little longer. He gave them time to soak it all in.

Benoni stood at the front of the audience, leaning with his elbows on the stage. He smiled as he smelled the deliciousness of this orchard. His blue and green eyes focused on the High Commander and his family in their fancy summer clothes. He dropped a paw to adjust his belt, which held his trademark bag of rocks (freshly washed) and the short sword that Duran was teaching him to wield.

Then he turned and glanced at all of the fort-beasts waiting with him. They looked so tidy and ready for action. The mouse hoped he looked the same -- perhaps his reluctant bath this morning was worth the bizarre soft and fluffy feeling. At least he was cleaner than some creatures.

But a gathering this large was rarely as quiet as they were. Benoni gazed again at the High Commander, becoming curious about what he wanted to say.

Orion knew he would never get used to wearing shirts. The darn things were just so suffocating! And yet, he also knew there were occasions were shirts were a necessity. Unfortunately, now was such a time.

Sitting on the outskirts of the crowd - not in the back, but rather in the middle, stage-left - Orion pulled at the collar of his shirt. He was wearing the uniform of the fort, pants and shirt freshly cleaned, red armband snug against his fur. At his waist hung his two daggers, as identical as twins.

He began reaching again for his shirt collar, grimaced, and lowered his paw. Now wasn't the time. Focusing his attention on those on the stage, the red stilled himself, becoming a living statue - excepting, of course, his tail. The bushy thing could not be quelled; it waved gently in the soft breeze that floated across the lawn.

Closing his eyes briefly, Orion enjoyed the silence. It wasn't an uncomfortable silence like the kind that often invited themselves into any conversation he chose to attempt. Rather, it was a sort of happy silence - no, not quite happy. Content; as if on this day, in this place, all was as it should be.

And yet, there was an eagerness as well. An energy that spoke of anticipation of things to come.

Rip was trying hard to contain his excitement. He was in the crowd in front of the stage, close to the back. He noticed that several of the beasts in front of him looked a little confused, and he could only smile at the thought of them. In true Duran fashion, the High Commander had probably assembled them without an explanation to why they were even there. The same had happened at the first assembly of this sort, and Rip remembered all too well. His grin grew broader as he thought about it.

He tugged absently at his uniform, straightening his tunic. Like the rest, he was decked out in his warrior’s finest. The bones and colored rocks that usually hung at his belt had been replaced by an ornate looking long knife that he hardly ever used except for fancy times like this. The brawny otter had even redone his fur dyes for the occasion, and the bright red of the stripes across his muzzle helped them look less like old battle scars.

As Duran continued to survey the crowd, Riptide glanced around to see his old commander, Talyn Ki standing at the side of the stage along with the other commanders. Feeling someone’s gaze on her, the squirrel turned to look at him and he flashed her his largest grin. She returned it with a scowl.

Apparently she had not been pleased to see him among the center group. Rip chuckled softly under his breath. Oh, poor Talyn. She would just have to learn to work with him.

At last the anticipation was broken as Duran raised his paws and opened his mouth to speak. His voice rose above the crowd and filled the whole orchard. Even the breeze seemed to die down as his words washed over the gathering.

“Fellow fortbeasts and warriors all, thank you for coming to this assembly. Today is a perfect day for the celebration we have planned, so before we waste another blessed moment of it, let us begin.

“Benoni Kristoll, please come to me on the stage.”

The vole’s voice was kind and fatherly as he looked down and found the mouse, standing proudly among the other warriors waiting to be called up next. Though he did not show it on the outside, Duran was excited for the young Benoni today and happy for what was about to happen to him.

As Duran began speaking, an even bigger hush came over the crowd. But Orion could feel the anticipation beginning to drain away to be replaced with...relief? No, more like relaxation. The waiting was finally over, and things were moving.

A hedgehog coughed loudly several feet in front of Orion, and a handful of guardsbeasts turned to glare at the offender. However, all attention returned to the stage as the High Commander again spoke.

“Benoni Kristoll, please come to me on the stage.”

All eyes moved to the young mouse at the foot of the stage. A smile tugged whole-heartedly at Orion's lips, doing its level best to evidence itself.

"Ready for action" did not quite describe Enamel. On the contrary, the young hare looked about ready to take a nap. Which, incidentally, was what he had been doing before he'd been called out. Some helpful beast had gotten his uniform all cleaned up, stitched together and helped him button it, despite his mumbling assurance that he was quite capable of doing buttons himself, and that it was only his footpaw that was injured.

But one does not argue a whole lot when the beast helping one is a very pretty haremaid named Meryl.

Sleepy though Mel was, he was also very happy. Getting shot was, he was starting to find, one of the best things that had happened to him since coming to the fort. Captain Juno didn't make him go out on patrols anymore, and Commander Roe let him off with minimum training and watches - that meant more time to laze around and watch the sky.

On top of that, his days spent keeping the Hall of Remembrance clean were fast becoming his favourites. The nice wooden smell, the quiet, thoughtful mood it gave off, the twang of cleaning solution soaking into his fur... Seldom did anybeast bother him in that tranquil, brilliant room. And if they did, he just took his broom and mop and bucket, and waited out in the hall until they had left again, and then made sure to wipe up their tears.

It was a sombering job, and Mel was, at heart, a fairly somber hare compared to the rest of his species.

And though he was sleepy and happy, he was also, it must be said, dreading. Commander Swiftpike had called them out here for a reason, and he was not at all certain that he would enjoy the reason.

He felt sorry for Benoni.

Benoni's ears twitched a little as the High Commander began to speak. He straightened his neck, listening to every word.

But when his own name was called, he tensed up, gripping the stage with one paw. What?Whyme?AmIintrouble? His heart was beating faster, almost hard enough to hurt. The fur on his back shivered once. He could almost feel the whole crowd watching him. But Duran had summoned him, and it would not do to act as a coward in front of everyone. So he kept his eyes on Duran and climbed up onto the stage.

In the moment that he sat curled up as small as possible on the edge of the stage, he glanced to the side at the warriors standing near the stage. He avoided looking into anyone's eyes, but noted the festive clothing. He had forgotten that this was supposed to be a celebration. Of course he was not in trouble. Duran's announcement today must be part of that celebration. The mouse took a deep breath and stood up.

He strolled toward the Commander, trying to show a relaxed smile. When he was almost within arm's reach, he stopped facing the vole, still too timid to face the crowd watching him, but standing tall in the middle of the stage.

Despite Duran’s best efforts, a smile appeared on his face as Benoni came and stood with him on the stage. The mouse’s stance was as Duran expected it to be. However, it was probably about to change.

“Let it be recorded that on this day during the Summer of the Second Bloom that Benoni Kristoll was accepted into our forces as a full-fledged warrior. He has shown remarkable skill with a blade and he will be a welcome addition to our fighters here, no matter which tower he decides to join.

“Everyone, welcome Corporal Kristoll to our ranks!”

As Duran spoke the last sentence he raised his right paw and gave the young mouse a salute, and his ears picked up the sound of the rest of the crowd joining him. The vole smiled down at Benoni, and when his paw was lowered again Avirly approached and pinned two small white flowers to his chest. Duran faintly heard her whisper to him before she went back to her spot.

“You’ll get your pin and armband after you’ve declared which tower you will join.”

When his young daughter reached her place again beside him he put a paw around her shoulders and drew her closer to his side. Still looking happily at Benoni he gave the mouse a short nod before turning to face the crowd again. Avirly gestured silently at the mouse to indicate that he was to take a few steps back and stand at attention again, as it was no someone else’s turn to be honored.

“Corporal Orion Fulcry, please come to me on the stage.”

Sceo grinned widely from where she stood in rank by the other commanders. Benoni was a good mouse, and she couldn't have been happier for him. She was certainly hoping that he'd declare for the North Tower.

The squirrel shifted slightly on her footpaws. Standing still had never been her strong point. She had to fiddle. Ah, well. It was easy enough to fiddle subtly with the string of her bow.

Ah!

And Orion as well. She wasn't surprised there, either. The squirrel had poured his heart and soul into the fort, and it made her proud to be his commander.

Is most definitely one to argue.
