Caermar

A little dust cloud was rising where minutes ago there had been none. In sharp contrast to the blank sky, this little dirty cloud rose its head and danced about merrily on the breeze, but not before pointing fingers at its source near the main gate. The raggedy old shrew was bent over the walkway from the gatehouse to the Keep, a broom just as ragged as he clutched tightly between his claws. Beady eyes were fixed on the ground and the broom waggled this way and that in a furious facade of sweeping. Caermar huffed and puffed quietly to himself (he had been chided earlier by some wrinkly crone or another for talking too loud), soundless words forming on his lips. His whiskers twitched just as fiercely as his broom as he swept up the dust from ground.

The early afternoon sun winked cheekily from the sky, making shadows long but allowing no constant breeze to cool them. In spite of the heat, Caermar continued diligently at his job. From the way the wall guards were ignoring him, he had been there for quite some time now. His dust cloud arced lazily over the grounds, just as cheeky as the sun. It would show those white puffs how real clouds were made. Yet the slight winds had a way of pulling the dirt back to the ground, coating the grass with a fine layer of grime that Caermar would catch later.

For now, though, his attention was focused solely on the path, and in this one place in particular where the grass's shadows had cast a spot that would not come out, despite of the shrew's cleaning. His motions became a little more frantic, his gaze even more intense, and his mutterings a little brisker. And the broom continued to flick away the dirt until a small hole was starting to form. The grass shadow remained in place and the cloud continued to expand overhead.

Talyn had just been on wall duty. She hated it. The squirrel complained to Duran at least every other day about the lack of forces in her tower. They were still short enough recruits that she had to participate in such meaningless and petty tasks such as wall duty. It was demeaning and boring and always put her in a foul mood.

Her plan was to walk back to the fort and hole herself up in her office before Duran found her. Doubtless he had heard that she had chased off yet another second in command today. That brought the count up to six, and the High Commander kept bringing it up that she’d have more forces for guard duty if she wouldn’t keep losing hers because she was “so hard to work with”. Pah. She was fine to work with, it was them that needed to stop badgering her all the time. She understood the paperwork… sort of… but it grated her to have to meet the new or young recruits and work to train them. They were so useless and Talyn lost her patience with their lack of improvement quickly.

The squirrel sighed and rubbed her eyes with one paw as she left the East Tower and pointed her footpaws toward the Keep. She never started walking that way, however, when she saw a small dust cloud by the gate. A frown appeared on her face as she wondered why the guards had not signaled that someone had entered. Her curiosity piqued, she began to make her way toward the gate.

As she got closer she realized who it was—Caermar. He had wandered around the fort since she had been there, though she had never had much contact with him. Everyone know about the mouse incident, of course, but Talyn had always secretly thought the mouse had rather asked for it. Sure, it was sad the chap had died, and she was as wary of Caermar as the next beast because of it, but… She could remember that snotty little mouse. He’d been in her tower and formed the base of her hatred of working with raw recruits.

“So, Caermar, back with us again, are you? I see you’ve joined our cleaning crew now. Very decent of you.”

For a little while Talyn stood and silently watched the shrew have at the small shadow on the path. The hole he was forming only made her smile crookedly in some form of amusement.

“Don’t think you’ll be able to get that spot with just a broom though, it’s a toughie. Tried soap and water yet?”
