(OOC: Feel free to join in. Just getting Tel back in the swing of things here :D)

Teltoli's stomach rumbled as he made his way up the steps to the top of the Tower. What a perfect time to be on watch! Right when he was supposed to be having his lunch! The nerve of it all! The hare smiled with good humor at his thoughts as he made up the last step. He used a leaf bladed spear as a walking stick and came to the edge of the rampart.

His sparkling eyes moved over the area, noting every detail of the surroundings. Good. All seemed quite for the time being. No vermin, no unusual birds, no smoke. Nothing. Just calm, tranquility.

The ruddy hare placed a paw to his stomach then as another rumble escaped. He would have to get some food. But, how could he do that and keep his post? Tel hoped somebeast was on duty with him. Perhaps they would have some food.

Juno, unfortunately, was on duty. Marching across the wide expanse of grass toward the South Wall, the hare muttered mutinous warnings under her breath at the innocent trees and vegetable gardens that got in her way. A lovely day like this, with the crisp tang of autumn moss and last night's rain melding in the grass, the delicious smells of lunch wafting around her whiskers and Roe's face when Juno had asked who was on duty today. She was sure the otter had been laughing at her secretly as Juno had wailed in disgust at the thought of being on watch without lunch.

Roe had promised to bring her something edible after everyone else was finished. Juno had eyed Enamel, Torsten and the numerous other hares piling into the hall along with every other hungry, happy Fortbeast, and strongly doubted there would be any food left. And what had Roe said? 'Don't worry, I'm sure there'll be some salad left.'

Salad! Salad for a hard-working hare like Juno! Salad! The indignity of it. Did Roe think she was dieting? Struck by another thought, Juno glanced down at her blue jerkin. She patted it self-consciously, then glanced around to make sure there were no beasts watching. No. No extra weight, as far as she could tell. Hah. Salad. Well, Roe knew what she could do with her 'salad'.

With a sigh, Juno leaned her spear against the wall parapet, propping it up so it looked as if she were standing at attention, facing away from the fort and over to the land beyond. She stood stiffly next to it, apparently folding her paws in front of herself. Cautiously, she reached one paw into her pocket, and pulled out two small pieces of oatbread. She needed to get bigger pockets.

About to sink her eager teeth into the first piece of bread, the hare paused. What was that peculiar noise? She glanced around swiftly; oh, drat it. There was someone in the tower. Of course Roe wouldn't have put her on watch alone. Now she'd have to share.

Heaving another dramatic sigh, Juno shoved the bread back into her pocket, picked up her spear and headed along the walltop to the tower. Inside, she paused to ransack Enamel's bed for any sign of food; either the young hare had eaten it all or Roe had been through before her. Nothing.

Climbing the ladder to the trapdoor, the hare pushed it open and clambered onto the very top platform of the tower. Oh, it was that hare chap. Teltoli, that was it. Well, at least he was decently good looking, even if she'd hardly had a chance to talk to him. They always seemed to be on different shifts.

"I say, you're up here as well, wot. Did Roe tell you she'd bring you some salad too, or are you going to starve as well as me?" Juno tossed one piece of bread to the other hare and hoped that he didn't notice it was the (very slightly) smaller piece. She took a bite, without waiting for him to reply, and added, "You knew Roe several years ago, wot? Down at that bally other Fort? Ruddler. Did she starve you there too?"

"I say, you're up here as well, wot. Did Roe tell you she'd bring you some salad too, or are you going to starve as well as me?"

Tel gratefully snatched the oatbread from the air and had it practically in his mouth as Juno spoke. He waggled his ears and grinned as she questioned him about the old fort.

"You knew Roe several years ago, wot? Down at that bally other Fort? Ruddler. Did she starve you there too?"

A severe expression over took him as he bit off a mouthful of bread. Chewing slowly he regarded the other hare and spoke after swallowing.

"Aye I knew Miss Sungold quite well h'actually. We were mates in the days of Ruddler's prime." He half smiled and tilted his head towards the female. "Mustn't speak so harshly of our superiors should we?" He laughed now, knowing that Juno was his superior as well. Tel was always good natured at heart. Juno's coming had fulfilled both his longing for food and for company. He had seen the female around but really never had the chance to speak with her.

He put the rest of the bread in his mouth and chewed it reflectively. After finishing he waggled his ears at Juno and grinned. "Think you need bigger pockets miss." He reached to his own pocket and patted it. A half of a pie could have fit easily. "Now, this is a pocket...though it doesn't do much good when empty..." He glanced at the trapdoor. "Any chance you have somebeast in the wing, ready to give two poor hungry watchers of the wall a bit of respite?"

Juno grinned at Teltoli's joke and swallowed down the last of her bread. She gestured to her empty pockets mournfully and shrugged as the last crumbs of bread went down. "Well, h'actually, technic'ly, Roe'n'I are equal rank, wot. Was a Major at the old Fire Mountain for several years before bein' transferred here. Decided to retire at Salamandastron and just take on rank here, wot, much too confusin' otherwise - but technic'ly, we're on roughly equal ground. Haven't lost m'Salamandastron rank just because I've retired, wot. Lord Thickstripe put m'name down as 'official Salamandastron representative'. She's a second in command here, I wos a second in command at old Sala-bally. Anyway, 'm rambling. Keeps the hunger out of the mind, wot. I'm just Colonel Springleap here - TELO!"

Breaking of her hunger-induced ramblings on rank and suchlike, Juno pounced on the hapless young South Guard mouse who had poked his head through the trapdoor. He yelped and was half-hauled through the trapdoor to face the two hungry hares. "I just ... forgot my cloak, miss!" he said hopefully. True enough, the mouse's small green cloak was folded over one of the parapets. Juno took it and gave it to him.

"Alright, Guardbeast, now y'here you can follow official instructions, wot. I want ye t'go to the kitchen and collect as much food as y'can and bring it up here for Guardbeast Riverbuck and m'self. We've got a hard day's, er, guardin' to do and we can't do it on empty stomachs, wot!"

"No miss!" Telo nodded gratefully as Juno released his shoulder and shot back down the ladder. Juno resumed her position leaning against the wall, and glanced out across the silent lands below. "Well, that's lunch taken care of," she said to Teltoli with a grin. "So what were y'just saying about wanting food in y'pocket, wot?"

The hare couldn't help but grin as Juno dealt with the mouse Guardsbeast. When it came to food it seemed hare's were "nevah backwards about comin' forwards." Before much time had passed the mouse was succying down to the kitchens and the thought of good food was alive and well in Tel's mind.

So what were y'just saying about wanting food in y'pocket, wot

Tel waggled his ears and smiled winningly. Juno certainly was an interesting hare.

"Well, looks like I won't 'ave to worry 'bout that much longer. I can fill me pockets from what comes during lunch I hope!"

He paused and cast his eyes out over the parapets, noting that everything was still and quite. He was suddenly quite glad of Juno's company, tower watch could get exceedingly boring when nothing was going on. And, usually nothing went on.

"You been 'er at Black Arch long miss Springleap?" He didn't mean any disrespect in calling her "miss". It was just what he referred to most females as no matter their rank.

"You been 'er at Black Arch long miss Springleap?"

Juno positioned herself on the parapets so she could see down over the walls to the Gate and path, and at the same time have a view across the Fort down to the doors, where Telo had just vanished in search of food. She fiddled with the shaft of her Guard regulation spear and thought a moment.

"Oh, I came with the first detachment of Long Patrol hares to guard the place when Duran had just arrived t'take over the place, wot. Most of m'fellows went back to the old Fire Mountain when the Fort became operational, but Thicky - er, Lord Thickstripe wanted a Salamandastron representative here, wot. So I suppose I've been here as long as most; when Roe turned up Duran gave her Commander straight off the bat and I asked to be her second, wot. South Tower's closest to Salamandastron I get, now."

A faint tinge of sadness, almost loneliness, touched Juno's voice as she fiddled absently with the spear shaft. She glanced up at Teltoli swiftly, and continued in a more cheerful tone of voice, "Besides, we've got some of Redwall's cooks here. Wouldn't go back to regiment grub if I didn't have to, wot! What about you, mister Riverbuck? What've you been doing with y'self since Ruddler?"

Tel noted the tinge of sadness in the female hare's voice as she recalled Salamandastron. He himself had never made it to the Fire Mountain, though he had seen it from afar. Teltoli's loyalties were to his river clan and when he was not on guard at a fort he was back home with the clan.

"Well well, wot!" He twiddled his ears and scratched his chin reflectively. "What 'ave Hi been up to? When I locked the main gates of Ruddlah I think I may 'ave left a bit 'o meself in there wot! Still miss me bally 'ol Gatehouse." The same twinge of sadness crept into his speech as had hers. "There was hardly a beast left there though. Decided to let Ruddlah sleep for a spell. As far as I know she's still locked up tight and ready for us if we ever care to return." He nodded as if confirming this thought and then continued. "Made my way back to the Riverbuck clan at the south end of River Moss. Stayed there a few seasons and helped me 'ol pater bring up some new recruits. I'd say me parents run our clan in a similar fashion to Salamandastron. We turn out good material if I do say so meself wot!" His eyes sparkled with pride for his home clan. "As usual me footpaws wouldn't let me stay for too long though. Took to the roads, and found meself 'er eventually. 'Course upon finding me old Ruddlah comrade Roe 'er I decided to stay a spell and well... 'er I am wot wot!"

As he finished his tale another loud rumble sounded from his gut. He hoped the mouse would be back soon.

"Redwall cooks eh? Prime stuff that! Chalk that up as another reason to stay put for a while." He paused. "You think Lord Thickeystripe will evah call you back to the mountain?"

Juno listened with more than just polite interest to Teltoli's tale. The hare, older than Juno by a few seasons at least, certainly had led an interesting life. "Ever think you'll head back to the old Ruddler at all? See your gatehouse again, wot? It's funny ... how old homes just don't seem to let ye go, in a way. I mean, if I wanted I could go back to Salamandastron tomorrow and have a place in its ranks without a moment's hesitation, wot. Although Salamandastron is still operatin', whereas Ruddler is quiet. I suppose Black Arch has taken over its role, wot."

She paused her thoughtful ruminations a moment, then said in a different tone of voice, "If that young mousey fella don't turn up with our food in less than three minutes I'll go after him myself."

Juno stood and moved to the other side of the parapet where she peered down to the grounds below. As she watched, Telo appeared out of the main Fort door, an overburdened tray in his small paws. "I say, there he is! Good show, that mouse."

Teltoli nodded in understanding as Juno spoke of old homes and the like. it was true. He had left a piece of himself at Ruddler, a peice that owuld never be regained. But perhaps it was for the best. That part of him was the Ruddler Teltoli. This was the new Teltoli, Tower Guard for Black Arch Fort. It did have a nice enough ring to it. Even as he thought this over he could feel himself sinking in a bit deeper to this new fort that would become a new home for him as well.

"Aye, I think Black Arch has done just that. Leave old Ruddlah to her well deserved nap. She'll still be there if we ever need her again wot! Suppose it would be harder if Ruddlah was still in operation like Salamandawhotsit." He eyed Juno for a moment, sensing it must be quite difficult for her at times. Knowing her old home was still there but she could not return for orders sake. "Must be difficult for you at time eh wot?" His voice softened slightly, showing a bit of sympathy but not over doing it. Tel had always been a kind ear for many troubled beasts during his times at the old fort. Perhaps a little of that showed as he spoke to Juno.

The moment soon passed with the arrival of Telo back to the walltop.

i say! There he is. Good show that mouse.

Tel grinned and went to help Telo with the lunch tray. He releaved the mouse of his burden and nodded thanks.

"Aye! Bally good show wot! Enough for five beasts here...or" He winked at Juno "Two hungry hares I suppose wot!"

Telo grinned. "Well two hares perhaps, but two hungry ones? Carry that much would 'ave taken much longer." The mouse jested with good nature before nodding to Tel and saluting smartly to Juno. Then he dissappeared back down the tower steps.

Teltoli looked over the lunch. A bowl of fresh summer salad complete with herb dressing. Four large cheese and onion flans. Another bowl with assorted candies nuts and fruit and a flagon of cold mint tea.

"Yah weren't lying about the food 'er Miss Sringleap. Looks jolly good wot wot!" The hare rubbed his paws together and them poured two cups of tea. Pawing one to Juno he grinned.

"Here's to our first wall guard duty together wot!" He held out his cup and glanced to the side for a moment. Even though he had food, Tel would not be distracted from his duties for too long. He was afterall an old Gatekeeper. keeping an eye out came natural to him.
