Rather than turn to see who Ariel was speaking of, Rook simply tipped his chair back on it's hind legs and looked up. The further back he went, the clearer the identity of their old friend became; the first discerning feature to enter his line of sight was a pair of long ears that waggled merrily. Further along they pinked, all the way down to the base of the beast's brow which furrowed in an amused fashion. A thin red scarf was tied low around his forehead, nearly shading a pair of bright hazel eyes. Weathered by sun, wind, and rain, the fraying ends still betrayed some signs that it had once been a very fine material. His grin was unmistakable. "TELTOLI -clack!- OOF!" Upon recognizing the hare, Rook's excitement had caused him to jerk his body back to embrace his friend, dislodging the legs of his chair and tipping him over onto the floor. Stunned, he still managed to breathe out the last of the his name. "....riverbuck...." |

(OOC: Slight autos to Rook. Let me know if you want them changed XD It's so fun to RP with you guys after so long!) TELTOLI -clack!- OOF! The hare smiled broadly and bent down to offer Rook a friendly paw up. It was so good to see him Teltoli really couldn't figure out what he wanted to say first. Ruddler shimmered in his memories becoming more vivid with every glance towards Rook and Ariel. "Careful there mate! Didn't know me looks were enough teh knock sombeast off their bally chair!" He chuckled and helped the otter to his footpaws. After looking him in the eyes for a moment the hare stepped back and chucked him playfully on the arm. "Rook Scarbin! What's happened to you?" He grinned again and waggled his ears. "Been through a famine and a shipwreck Hi bet?" After a little banter with Rook he turned his gaze to Ariel. Tel still much respected the sea otter who had once been his Commander. His face became slightly more serious for a moment as he bowed his head to her. "Miss Oceantear, an honor." He grinned and waggled his ears. He didn't mean it to sound formal but he did want her to know how much he still respected her and valued her friendship. Eventually Tel relaxed and sat down at the table. He nodded to Ariel and spoke again. "I suppose you'll want to know about the 'ol Fort then?" |

Ariel clasped Teltoli's paw warmly. Never considering herself particularly sentimental, it was surprising how relieved she felt in the company of friends. She had a brief urge to hug him, but old habits and mannerisms die hard, and she was still a little unbalanced with everything. Although, she admitted to herself, the lack of endless salutes lightened conversation considerably. He looked fit and happy, which spoke well of this place. "You're a welcome sight, Tel. Truly good t'see you." Burku deposited a large flagon of October Ale and a thick-crusted mushroom and onion flan on their table. "Commander Sungold says welcome to Black Arch," she told the two otters. Burku nodded to Teltoli. "And Mister Teltoli sir, she says t' tell you ye'd best bring y' otter friends to the Fort or else she'll put ye on cellar duty for a year!" Commander Sungold. Ariel's hunch had been right, Roe had certainly made a name for herself! She looked forward to congratulating her whenever the opportunity presented itself. She cut the flan into slices and pushed the first slice at Rook (it's hard work performing indoor acrobatics), and one each to Teltoli and herself. And October Ale.... it hit the spot perfectly. She'd forgotten how delicious warm, honest food was. And now, with the edge taken off of her appetite, she had a thousand questions she wanted to ask. "Aye, Mister Riverbuck -- do tell us 'bout this place where we've landed." |

Rook held back from the conversation, as he was prone to doing when not the topic, and instead busied himself with the slice of flan he'd been given. It was delicious, reminding him of the great many meals he'd taken before a roaring fire in the safety of Redwall's Cavern Hole. He'd been notorious for pinching pasties too, but once the cooks had wised to his tricks, he'd more often face their wooden spoons than he would get what he was after. The slice of flan was gone in the space of a few bites, so while his friends conversed the otter sat to brush a few errant flakes of crust from his whiskers and wash the rest down with several sips of ale. It felt good to be in familiar company once more, revisiting company he'd convinced himself that he'd enjoy only once; Ariel and Teltoli standing together now, others to join them and beasts who still marched to the beat of a different drum. These thoughts inevitably turned to Mackbry, an old hare Rook secretly hoped would be waiting when the gates to Dark Forest opened to claim him. Rather than linger in melancholy, Rook's attention turned back to the flan, his eyes darting from it up to Ariel, she with her back turned to him. His expression softened and he licked a sheen across his lips for they had gone bone dry with the opportunity to pilfer another piece. Leaning over, he slid a paw from beneath his cloak and walked two fingers along the outside edge of the table, following it until the edge of the plate was within reach. Age had not slowed him any. He struck with all the poise of a coiled snake, snatching up another piece and stuffing it into his mouth. Yoink! |

You're a welcome sight, Tel. Truly good t'see you. Tel's eyes shone with gratefulness in being in the company of old and trusted friends once more. He nodded to Ariel's words and then waggled his ears and grinned. "Tis truly good to be in your company again miss!" He paused. "Though I don't know if Rook's old mug is a welcome sight." ...And Mister Teltoli sir, she says t' tell you ye'd best bring y' otter friends to the Fort or else she'll put ye on cellar duty for a year "Put me on cellar patrol would she? Hah! I'd drain those cellars dry wot! Love a good drink..." He chortled and then widened his eyes as food and drink were set down in front of him. He accepted his piece of flan with relish and dug right in. Once his piece was devoured he brushed flaky crust from his whiskers and listened to Ariel's question. Aye, Mister Riverbuck -- do tell us 'bout this place where we've landed "Ah Black Arch! A fine place. I happened upon it from rumors during my travels. Rumors that a certain otter maid had made quite a name for herself 'er. It it was true that Roe was here, well then, I had to see for myself wot! T'was true a'course as you just 'eard." He smiled proudly at Sungold's accomplishment. "Suppose Burka 'er is right, we should head over there after our meal..." The hare took a swig of cider and smacked his lips as he watched Rook steal another piece of flan. He chuckled. "Still is stealthy as ever eh mate?" |

Ariel grinned at Rook. Just imagine if he'd been born a hare. She politely whiped her whiskers with a second napkin, and pushed the remainder of the flan toward the voracious otter. "Eat up, slobberchops. Time t'see this Fort." Her curiousity was definitely peaked, and she wasn't going to learn much more from the inside of a tavern (however warm and comfortable it was). Time to see the grounds, the walls, the barracks, and, most importantly, meet those in charge. And if there was a harbor.... And see if maybe she'd found somewhere to stay a while. Her eyes flickered over the rambunctious party taking place over at a larger table. A mad splattering of uniforms, weapons, and battle regalia decorated the party-goers. Definitely a militaristic place, one way or the other. Her mind fairly hummed as she imagined what it would look like, both inside and out. Even more curious, how it was run. And who ran it. The fortress itself couldn't be far up the road, if off-duty creatures were able to come here between shifts. She downed the last swallow of ale and rose to her feet. Greeting Roe would have to wait, as the ruckus at the larger table was getting louder by the minute. She picked up her harpoon, slid it into its straps across her back, and swung her pack over one shoulder. "So, Tel.... can I impose, 'n ask you to show us to Black Arch Fort?" |

Even as he tucked away the last of the flan, Rook protested. "Slobberchops? It's been a good long while since I've shared vittles like these. Besides, if I'm going to make a glutton of myself, it might as well be in the company of friends." He winked to puncuate his logic with some good old-fashioned cheekiness, standing up from the table as he did. She knew what a tease he could be with the proper motivation. It was only for those who meant the most to Rook that he'd bring out the very best of his oft-clownish nature. These later-in-life seasons found him acting less and less his age and more like the dibbuns that scurried about his footpaws that first summer. Perhaps he was just making up for lost time. Warm and full, he joined the pair near the door and pulled the frayed lining of his cloak close around his arms, still not acclimated to the potent nip of the Northlands yet. "Well c'mon, y' furry snails. The sooner we get outside, the sooner I can complain about it." |

So, Tel.... can I impose, 'n ask you to show us to Black Arch Fort As Ariel stood up to leave Tel did the same. The same irrepressible grin shown on his ruddy face. He was more than happy to show two of his oldest comrades the Fort he now called home. "Not an imposition at all Miss Oceantear! Would be me bally pleasure to show yah Black Arch wot!" While he had been speaking Rook had made his way to the door. Well c'mon, y' furry snails. The sooner we get outside, the sooner I can complain about it Tel cocked his head and nodded towards the door. "Sneaky when it comes to food and quick when it comes teh leavin' eh Rook? Same 'ol Scarbin wot!" The hare smiled and stepped out into fresh air. He took deep breath and nodded to his companions. "Righto! Let's get a move on wot! Dinner's on soon 'm sure!" |

Ariel followed Teltoli out the door into the brisk autumn air. Curiousity and anxiety mixed together created a strange sort of adrenaline. Or nerves, one or the other. Outside the tavern, she swapped the faded cloak she was wearing for one of dark, lustrous blue pulled from the inside of her pack. It hung heavily around her shoulders, and the silver trim shimmered faintly. As they walked, she fished around in her backpack until she found an untarnished silver clasp, which she exchanged for the scarred and illegible one holding her cloak. She briefly regretted leaving behind the majority of her formal officer dress attire, but there simply hadn't been room to drag it around the world and back. As an afterthought, she removed several miscellaneous rings, earrings, and arm bands and stuffed them into the pack. Better to look like an officer than a corsair, she thought grimly to herself. Had she really fallen this far in just a few years? Ariel glanced at Rook, who looked perfectly calm and happy as he tromped along. His presence, and Teltoli's, were comforting. She took a deep breath. From the outside, her composure was perfect. "Lead on, Tel." |
