Teltoli made his way down to the shore with a simple burlap haversack slung over his shoulder. The hare took in a deep breath of the salty sea air and sighed. His leather wrapped footpaws were tickled by salt grass as he made it to the sand of the shore. His hazel eyes sparkled as he cast his gaze out to sea. The sun would be setting soon enough. The air had begun to turn chilly as the sun continued to sink towards the water.

The hare continued to move forward as he looked this way and that. Eventually his gaze rested on a large trunk that had been washed to shoe. He nodded.

"Perfect wot!" He leaped slightly into the air with excitement at his find and made sand fly as he made his way towards the log. After setting down the sack he used his broad footpaws to clear a level area in the sand.

"Now for fire wood..." He spoke softly to himself and stooped to pick up a stick. Tossing it into the circle he had made he continued to pick up wood until he had a large pile. After stacking it he reached into his jerkin and pulled out flint and steel.

An hour or so later found the hare sitting and staring into the flames. All he could see around him was the solid black of night. The flames reflected in his kind eyes as he probed the fire with the stick he had picked up earlier.

"Wonder if anybeast wants to sit around the fire tonight?" He mused to himself and waited to see if any fort beasts would spot his fire and come down to the shore to see who it was...

Unbeknownst to the hare, another beast had already made his way down to the shore, and if Teltoli wanted to find him, he was looking the wrong way. This creature had an affinity for water, even if salt water wasn't really his forte. He was a river otter after all. Jelal Waveskimmer was an odd surname for a creature who hadn't seen the sea as often as his other brethren, but it fit him as his sleek, tough body skiffed and shimmied and jived over and under the surf, taking advantage of the last of the sun's rays and letting them catch on the crests of waves and droplets of water his body threw up.

Mostly by chance, he had decided that soon he would have to get out and head back to the fort. The commander... well, the south tower commander anyway... might be needing somebeast to deliver some important postage. It was one of those rare days where a beast could relax a bit, but Jelal was as eager to prove himself as ever. And it wasn't like anybeast was watching him twirl around like a giddy fool; there was no way he was going to impress them out here. So out onto shore he went, driving his head above the water with the rest of his body following. Disregarding the fact that he had little else but a loincloth at the moment (because he was certain this stretch of beach was rarely if ever visited, a reason he chose it to swim in the first place), he tramped up the beach and shook his fur vigorously, feeling the chill beginning to set in.

It was about then his eyes chanced upon Teltoli, constructing a very convenient looking fire.

Without much ceremony or warning, the hare found himself with company. A bundle of clothes was dropped down and a soaked otter with naught but a pair of loose, knee-length breeches dropped down inside the ring of light.

"Evenin'!" Jelal blurted out with a big grin. "Glad to see you got us a fire goin'. It looks to be like it'll be chill as ice before the night's through! Course that might 'ave somethin' to do with me bein' wet."

The otter's grin was matched by the hare's as Teltoli looked up from his blaze into the eyes of Jelal. He seemed an easy going sort, just the kind of beast Tel was hoping to happen upon. He stabbed his stick down into the fire until it stuck and waggled his ears at the still wet otter.

"Evenin' wot! Does seem to be coolin' down though yer right...bein' all wet will make yeh that much colder." He nodded sagely and then grinned again. Turning to the side he fished through his haversack for a moment and then spoke to the otter in is reedy tenor tone. "The name's Teltoli by the way... Teltoli Riverbuck of the South towah. An' who might you be sah?"

Roe tramped steadily through the soft, damp sand at the edge of the beach. She and Torsten had been out on a wide patrol all day, following an arc through the thickest Mossflower wood down south on the Redwall path, curving around and back to meet the coastline before turning back to the Fort. Most of the South Tower beasts didn't really know why Roe insisted on these hard, day-long patrols through thick wild forest and craggy, treacherous cliffs. Roe herself hardly seemed to notice as the rest of her patrol puffed and panted and tripped their way through. Juno repeatedly told them it was because Roe had grown up wandering through the wildest parts of Mossflower. Telo and Torsten privately thought she just did it to annoy them.

Whoever was right, Roe always seemed to return to the Fort in a more relaxed state, smiling occasionally and once even cracking a joke. Tonight, however, she seemed tired, grim. She had sent Torsten back to the Fort a quicker way and told him to report to Duran that the cliffs were quiet. The hare had eyed her a moment, then nodded and headed inland as the sun set, illuminating the stark walls of the Fort in its fire.

As darkness fell, Roe trudged on up the long beach silently, her Commander cloak swinging around her footpaws, slapping at them as little waves came and soaked cloth and fur. Wherever her thoughts were, they were a long, long way away, and so she didn't notice the bright flickering fire and the silhouetted otter and hare until barely a hundred yards away.

The otter halted abruptly, brought back to the present by the sound of a familiar voice. Ah, Teltoli. Roe relaxed a little and hesitated - slip away back to the Fort and have a few moments longer of solitude, or go and talk to her South tower guards? It was true, she'd not had a great deal of time recently to talk to them. Then again, Roe was hardly a social otter at the best of times.

Besides, it was cold. The otter sighed, and moved forward up to the fire. Silently sitting down opposite Teltoli, she stared at the warm crackling flames and said, "Nice fire, Tel."

Jelal treated himself to a paw warming, holding his paws close to the fire and smiling amicably to the hare next to him. This was the way to spend a night, wasn't it? After a nice dip in the deeps, sit down to a warm fire with a friendly beast and while the night away with idle chatter and some good food. After all, Jelal was an otter full of energy. He could go back in for a short swimming trip if it was necessary! He had done it before in the constant fight for survival that was solitary living. Doing it for the pleasure of company would only add to the accomplishment. It made him want to jump right back in and snag a catch. He had already personally experienced one of Commander Sungold's harsh marches, and he planned on relaxing as much as possible in between those!

"The name's Teltoli by the way... Teltoli Riverbuck of the South towah. An' who might you be sah?"

"Who am I?" he repeated in a theatrically incredulous voice. "Been 'ere over two months an' not even my own tower mates know my name." He shook his head sadly and shrugged. "My fault more'n likely. 'Aven't quite gotten out like I used to." His muzzle broke into a grin as he extended a paw for the hare to shake.

"Jelal Waveskimmer. Of the South tower as well, mate!"

He lifted his tail and plopped it down near the flames, feeling the relaxing heat on his chilled fur and skin.

"Course I'm more at 'ome with maps an' the like, sometimes. I'm still hopin' for a nice quite day to visit the library, catch up on cartography."

It was right then he heard the voice of another otter he had never quite formally met outside of fort business, and one he knew was essential to stay on good relations with if his career at this fort was going to be anything profitable or enjoyable. And here he was not even wearing his uniform! Come to think of it he was hardly wearing anything.

"Ahh! Miss Sungold," he exclaimed, jumping up and saluting her smartly. "Fine night for a fire, isn't it? Well, you just said..." He looked around self-consciously, as if searching out something he was missing. "That's what we were doin', after all, just... enjoyin' the fire."

He knew he should have brought something to eat.

My fault more'n likely. 'Aven't quite gotten out like I used to.

Tel smiled and waggled his ears as Jelal spoke. He took an instant liking to the friendly otter and was pleasantly surprised to find that Jelal was in his tower.

Jelal Waveskimmer. Of the South tower as well, mate.

"Well well! A comrade 'o the bally towah then wot! Surprised we've not been on guard duty together yet wot! Sure it will happen sooner or latah though. Was just up there with Miss Juno the other day..." He began to think of the food that had been brought up to them that afternoon. His mind trailed off slightly as his stomach growled. It was time for food.

Nice fire, Tel.

Roe had appeared from the darkness and taken a seat by the flames. Tel cocked his head and smiled winningly at the otter maid who was now his Commander. He was not disheartened by the flip flop in roles. There could be no beast better to serve under then one he had watched learn so much in the days of Fort Ruddler. Roe had turned into a very capable leader.

"Miss Roe! What a pleasant surprise!"

Fine night for a fire, isn't it? Well, you just said...That's what we were doin', after all, just... enjoyin' the fire

As if on cue, Tel slung his haversack from behind him into the firelight.

"Well me matey, we'll be doin' more than just enjoying the fire before long! You hungry? Got some treats in 'er!"

The hungry hare began to rummage around in the bag and set various items out before him.

Roe eyed Jelal, a faint hint of amusement appearing on her unsmiling muzzle. Reaching her paws out to the blaze again, the otter said, "'s a good fire to enjoy."

She pulled her cloak pin free and settled the damp material, soaked hem toward the flames, on the ground beside her. The only thing Roe hated was a wet hem. Rain on her shoulders, snow in her whiskers, fine. But a wet hem sticking flabbily to her paws as she walked - no. Not pleasant.

"So what brought on this fiery evening, Tel?" she asked as the hare set about pulling large piles of food out of his haversack. Roe watched, amusement clearer on her face at the amount of food brought out. "Got guests coming?"

So what brought on this fiery evening, Tel? Got guests coming?

Teltoli noticed the grin playing on Roe's features. It was good to see his old friend in good spirits. He continued to pull items from his sack and place them in front of him until he had a sizable stack. He nodded with satisfaction when the job was done and tossed the now empty haversack behind him on the large log.

"Gotta 'ave the fire to cook the food wot wot!" He grinned cheekily at the otters and continued. "'N by the looks 'o you two I should have brought more. Far too slim for ottery types you are! What'cha been eatin'? Bread and water? " The hare twiddled his long ears and smiled winningly. "Looks as though two of me guests are already here... should be more coming soon enough Hi hope." He glanced about even though it was hard to see anything past the fire.

He opened a package made of waxed paper and passed it to Jelal and Roe. "'Er mates, take a piece of this each. Tis dough." He nodded to Roe. "I had a fire just like this when I first came to Ruddler. Made cherry pop overs that night if I remember rightly. Decided to do it all over again tonight seeing as Hi've decided to stay on at Black Arch wot!"

As they pulled off dough he showed them how to wrap it part way around a stick before moving on to the next step.

Cass lifted her nose to the salty breeze, breathing in the characteristic smell of the ocean. She had been down this way many times in the past, sliding down the sandy bank with the waves' percussion and the shore birds kewing the only sound of company. Though the path she took was familiar, albeit changing (like the sea, some would say) through the seasons, the sight of the ocean licking at the horizon had never ceased to amaze the mountain hare.

One paw grasped the corners of her plaid shawl while the other traced down the bank, grasping onto the brittle, but strong, steams of the sea oats as she slipped down the path. Broad feet made for treading atop the snow seemed to have little effect here on the sand. Once at the bottom, Cass made her way slowly across the sand toward the ocean where the going would be easier. She took her time walking towards the bonfire; she was in no hurry to get there, and from the looks of it, the beasts gathered 'round were in no hurry to leave.

And from the whisps of conversation she heard off of the wind, she was just in time, too.

"What d'yer haif ther, eh? Flapjacks?" Cass leaned forward, stepping out of the night to peer at whatever Teltoli had pulled out of his sack. Her whiskers twitched and ears pulled up curiously and she looked the dough over.
