OOC- I am hoping to get a response from a healer for this thread and eventually Rockpaw. Just when everything seemed to be going well for Brooke, aside from the fact that she had been separated from her mate for far to long, Logan seems to have come down with something. It started out as a sniffle but eventually it turned into a full blown fever, one that seemed much too high to be anything but life threatening. The blonde otter had been a mother for a long time. She has come to know the art of healing pretty well but for this she had no idea what to do. The femme tried everything that was logical. Despite it being a rather lovely day outside Brooke found herself sitting at Logan's bedside in the infirmary. Logan was her second born son, the first dying of a similar mysterious fever, and so it goes without saying that Brooke was a physical and mental mess as she sat there waiting for a beast to discover her and her sick son. Eventually they'd find them, hopefully before Brooke became delirious with fright. Brooke ended up crawling up on the bed with her son and cradling him in her loving arms as she hummed a whimsical tune that she had hummed to him so many times before. It would be amazing if she herself didn't come down with the same sickness but at this point the mother didn't care. The only thing that she longed for was for her son to recover so that they could greet Rockpaw as a family, that was if he ever managed to get to the fort. Rockpaw.... Where on earth was he? He should have been here at least a half of a season ago. This was yet another thing that plagued the female otter's mind. After this she would never again allow her mate to be out of her sight. And so there she sat, alone with her son with tears streaming down her otter cheeks, near exhaustion until she finally found the land of slumber. If the healer came in she'd likely not know which one was the patient, the kit or the mother. |

SilverRose walked down the hallway with a mug of hot tea in one paw and a small book in her other. She had left the infirmary briefly to get something warm to drink and to rest her eyes from the parchment work she had had to file over the past few hours. In the winter season, creatures flew through the infirmary on a daily basis. Broken footpaws, sprained wrists, stuffy noses, and at times fevers. The ice was treacherous and small paws were often numbed by playing in the snow for far too long. SilverRose didn't mind mending the breaks, but she was always cautious when she came across an ill beast. Fearing that she might get the sickness as well and infect her family, she would stay the night in the infirmary, both to keep an eye on her patients and to also quarantine herself. Thus far, she hadn't come down with anything, which was good since she was one of the head healers. She relied on Marabell's and Laurel's help from time to time, but for the most part, she spent her mornings in the infirmary, and sometimes her evening as well. She missed her fellow healer from Emerald Bay who had always been there to assist SilverRose with wounded or ill creatures. Her friends also liked to work the nightshifts so that SilverRose could be with her family. Unfortunately, the mother squirrel didn't have that luxury anymore. Let it be known that SilverRose didn't mind her job in the least bit. She enjoyed helping beasts, and she was typically good at it. When she didn't know how to treat an injury, she either looked up the remedy in one of the healing books or she wrote a letter to her father if she had the time. Fortunately Flashpaw was very quick about responding to his daughter and he would sometimes send one of the sparrows, usually Starflash, to Black Arch to ensure that SilverRose received the letter in time. The squirrel took a sip from her mug, only to pause when she saw the infirmary door open. Huh....she thought she had shut it on her way out. SilverRose padded forward quietly and poked her nose inside. The moment she saw Brooke and Logan, the squirrel's mouth dropped open in shock. She hadn't known that Brooke was staying at Black Arch! The squirrel's wave of joy at seeing the ottermaid was quickly overcome by dread when she saw Brooke curled up around Logan. Oh no... Quickly, SilverRose put the book and the mug on a table. She loathed waking the pair, but she wanted to see which otter was injured or ill. The squirrel approached and reached out a paw to gently shake Brooke awake. With her paw so close to Logan, she could practically feel the heat radiating from the young otter's head. SilverRose's eyes flashed with sympathy. She knew how hard it was to have a sick child, and to see Logan in such a state made her heart clench. SilverRose shook Brooke gently and spoke her name. "Brooke?" |

Brooke wasn't the type of female that would crumble easily. She had been through to much in her life to allow herself to be anything other then a strong femme but this was an entirely different story. This involved the health of her child, her and Rockpaw's first born son. And so when the otter opened her emerald green eyes what SilverRose saw was pure fright. Inwardly she was happy to see the female squirrel but she was more concerned about her child right now. Brooke felt relief wash over her since she knew that the fort's healer was none other then SilverRose Brighteye. Clearly Brooke trusted her. It was SilverRose that brought Logan into the world to begin with. It was now and only now that the female, once commander, otter broke down. Without Rockpaw to keep her strong in this situation she was simply a mess. Tears began to flow down her cheeks. Immediately there after she threw her arms around SilverRose and began to sob. "It's Logan SilverRose! He's sick! I've tried everything! I just don't know what to do! He can't die! He just can't! I won't survive another..." Silver knew of Brooke's past. Brooke had lost one son to a fever. It would destroy her if she lost another kit. Brooke managed to get off of the table and even though her statements seemed loud they were anything but. Logan was resting in the same room and the otter knew enough to talk low but her voice was laced with urgency. In Brooke's heart she knew that time was running out for her son. Oh if only Rockpaw were here! Once off of the table the female’s knees buckled. It would be hard to tell if she also contracted Logan’s sickness or if she was merely exhausted from tending to Logan for days. Tightly Brooke held onto SilverRose, her arms cascading around her neck. The otter didn’t mean to pull on the healer but she would simply fall to the floor if she let go. |

SilverRose was more than a little shocked when Brooke practically threw herself off of the table and into the squirrel's arms. She staggered back a step when the otter grabbed her, but she didn't try to fight against the hold. It was common for parents to cling to a healer or someone they knew when they were so worried. SilverRose had been a close friend to Brooke for some time now so she wasn't at all upset when the tears began to flow and Brooke's body began to tremble. Being a squirrel, SilverRose was a little shorter than her otter friend, but she still managed to wrap her arms around Brooke to help support her. "Brooke, Brooke, just breathe," she said softly. One paw lifted to rub Brooke's back in an attempt to help her calm down. "Just breathe," she repeated. Fates, she couldn't remember the last time she had seen Brooke so upset! "It's Logan SilverRose! He's sick! I've tried everything! I just don't know what to do! He can't die! He just can't! I won't survive another..." "I know," SilverRose whispered. Oh, she knew indeed. Brooke had shared the history about her lost child with SilverRose some time ago. It had been such a blessing when Logan was born and SilverRose felt a motherly love for the little otter. He was just one of many babes that she had delivered, but because of how much SilverRose cared about Brooke and Rockpaw, she had a special place in her heart for Logan as well. Just the thought of losing him made her stomach twist and she swore that she would stay at the little one's side, no matter what, to ensure that the fever broke. The hold Brooke had on SilverRose suddenly grew heavier as the ottermaid's legs buckled. The healer was quick to tighten her hold and arch her shoulder so that she could support her friend some more. How long had it been since Brooke had actually slept? She looked so worn out, and she was thinner than SilverRose remembered. The squirrel sighed to herself and began to maneuver Brooke over to a comfortable bed. "Hush, Brooke," she said in a soothing tone. "I know you're afraid and that you don't want anything to happen to Logan. I swear to you, I'll do everything to make certain that the fever breaks. I won't let anything happen to him." It wasn't a promise she usually made since she was always afraid a patient would die after she said such a thing, but she knew Brooke. The otter needed that comfort and SilverRose was serious that she wouldn't let anything happen to Logan if she could help it. One paw reached out behind Brooke and pulled back a blanket while the other kept the otter pressed against her. Once the bed was clear, SilverRose tried to help her down onto the bed. "Here. Just rest for the moment while I take care of Logan. You need to be strong once he gets better." Her lips drew up into a comforting smile. "He'll need to be able to play with his momma. Just relax, Brooke. I'll take care of everything." SilverRose was so happy that Akira had decided to take Narika for the day. Whatever Logan was suffering from, she didn't want her daughter to catch it as well. Besides, she needed the room to be quiet so that both Brooke and Logan could rest. SilverRose glanced at the little otter and took a deep breath. She could tend to him once she helped his mother calm down a little bit. ooc: gah! Sorry about the delayed response. Lesson plans...oh the lesson plans *laughs* |

SilverRose always had a way of calming Brooke down. The femme otter closed her emerald green eyes for a moment as she allowed the squirrels voice to penetrate into her mind, causing her actions to follow suit with what Silver was telling her to do. Brooke finally relaxed onto the bed, curling up physically as her lips allowed a release of air from her lungs. Inwardly though what would really make her feel better would be if Rockpaw would finally show up at the Fort but such was the life of a wife that was married to a Captain. But Brooke would have to deal with being husbandless for now. Silver would have to be her only source of comfort. Really though Brooke would want no other to tend to her kit. Her and SilverRose had a long history together. Brooke now put on a small smile. She knew that she was taking up to much of the healer's time and that it would be better spent if she could now concentrate on Logan. The blonde otter's reassuring grin told Silver that she was fine and that it would be safe now to tend to her son. From Brooke's bed she would watch the healer go to work. There was something about watching Silver work her magic because... well that's what it seemed like it was... simply magic. The commanding otter really longed to know how things have been going for Silver but catching up would just have to wait. For now Brooke needed to put her priorities straight. Logan was at the top of her list. He was the most important thing to attend to right now. Brooke would simply have to force herself to be calm... at least until Rock got there. |

SilverRose was more than a little relieved when Brooke finally calmed down. She knew how horrible it was to fear for the life of your child. While Narika had never really been put in danger before (save for that one time at Emerald Bay), SilverRose was constantly worried that something might happen to her daughter. The thought that she could lose her little one frightened SilverRose more than anything else in the world. She would gladly die for Narika, and she knew Brooke probably felt the same way about Logan. But no one was going to die on her watch today, no sir. The squirrel squeezed Brooke's paw comfortingly then she went over to the shelves littered with herbs. She took several pouches down and began to mix the plants together so she could sprinkle them into a drink. Water was placed over the fire to heat up. The squirrel returned to Logan's side and she felt his face a little more. He was way too warm. Any warmer and she would have to just put him in an icy bath. For now, she hoped to sweat the fever out of him. SilverRose pulled out a few wool blankets and began to wrap the little otter up in the warm cloth. She knew it would be uncomfortable, but it might be what was needed. SilverRose placed the dibbun next to his mother then she returned to grab the water. She sprinkled the herbs into the liquid and stirred it for a moment. It gave off an earthy scent, a sure sign that the drink wasn't going to taste very good. Thinking, SilverRose reached out and pulled a small jar of honey off of a shelf. She scooped some out and into the drink to make it a little easier to go down. Logan couldn't afford to spit it out. Several minutes passed as she waited for the herbs to excrete their magic. The water cooled and SilverRose went to the bed with Logan. Slowly, she sat down and shifted the little otter into her lap. One paw kept his head lifted while she slowly poured the tonic into his mouth. Her finger moved gently against his throat to make him swallow in case he wasn't able to do so on his own. Once the drink was finished, SilverRose put the cup off to the side and she wrapped her tail and her arms around the little otter. She rocked and hummed softly, hoping to keep him and Brooke calm. All they could do at the moment was wait for the fever to break. If it didn't within an hour, SilverRose would have to try different tactics. ooc: I apologize for the delayed response again. |
