After having practiced boxing with his father and other long patrol hares in childhood, Tamm saw the "dance" as an opportunity to show off his skills. as he approached the massive crowd Tamm saw the Swiftpike family and immediately his mind started racing.

He softly muttered," I hope the Commander is entering! I'd love to see him fight."

Then, being the hare Tamm was, he thought if he were to fight Duran and win... then everyone would fully respect him, maybe even net him a promotion too. So, Tamm ran up pushing by beasts, rather rudely, grabbed some parchment and dropped it with his name into the almost overflowing box. What Tamm had not anticipated was that it was Laurel, not Duran, that dropped in their name.

While Tamm eagerly waited for his hopefully glorious match, he ran over to Teltoli. Tamm was so eager he tripped and landed right onto a nearby shrew who knocked over two mice. Tamm stood up, rather embarrassed as the many eyes watched him, and dusted himself off.

"Gerrof me yeh clumsy hare!

"Sorry, sorry, here." replied Tamm to the the angry shrew which he started to help up.

Since many hares tend to randomly lose attention, Tamm ignored the rest of the shrew's angry rant and walked up to Tel. As he made his greeting he started to stutter for an unknown reason to Tamm.

" Hi, uh, sir ,errm, Tel, uhm, I mean commander, er, what evah I bally call yah nowadays, wot! Oh and g'day t-to you ,uhm, mister watsyourname, ottery friend or ,uh, yeah what evah! Either of yeh join in the, err, fight or 'dance' or boxing match thingy?"

In battle you must be swift with the paw and mind.

Ohmygosh. The gigantic scary haremaid had just thrust a large mug into her hands. Tenalia accepted it quickly. . well she couldn't just drop it on the ground. What was in the cup? Stout? What was that? Otters were stout. . . How was a drink stout? It smelled rich and woody, almost sweet. . .

"Loosens up the muscles wot! Not so much you lose your jolly motor skills, but enough to make the blows a little less painful aye?"

Tenalia peered into the cup. This really must be something magical! It was a big mug though, she stuck her nose in, thinking about trying it-

She stopped quickly, blushing furious at the arrival of Telo. He was looking really handsome! And so confident . . . did he really just toss his name into the box like that? The little mousemaid made a small curtsy, her hands still wrapped around the mug, as she followed Spencer's lead. She smiled shyly at Telo, wondering for a moment who he was planning on fighting! Maybe one of those big otters!

"'Scuse me young'uns! . . . er don't let the commander see you've got that mug young mousy m'gel!"

"O-ok! . . thanks?"

Tenalia watched Spencer push through the crowd, still holding the haremaid's mug of mysterious liquid. And now apparently she wasn't supposed to let the commander see she had it. . . She looked back at Telo, smiling foolishly. She still had to put in her name. . .

"Hi! Y-youre fighting tonight?"

Telo nodded to Spencer as the hare left the scene. This of course left him alone with Tenalia which of course made his tail shake with nerves and his words waver.

Hi! Y-youre fighting tonight?

The young mouse cleared his throat and lifted his chin slightly, trying to look tough.

"Why y-yes... yes I did! Course I did...I mean..." His words trailed off. Why couldn't he show some confidence around this maid? He noticed the mug in her paws.

"What you got there?"

Tel! Well I think Warick has let having an assistant go to his head! Now he's decided chain mail should be part of the standard kit! And I can't take the credit for this evening, you'll have to thank deValory, she arranged the whole-

So! You've decided to show your fluffy white tale down by the ring eh wot? The only beastie you'll be florin' is your skinny self If I do say so, and respectfully of course sah!

Tel smiled as Akira, ready to comment on the actions of Warrick. However before he could Spencer was on the scene. Tel's ears straightened up and he cleared his throat as she caught him with her fiendish grin. Not doubt the field surgeon had arranged the "dance". It sounded right up her alley. He shot a cheeky grin in her direction in response to her respectful comment.

"Well, 'pears you kin floor a beast with just yer comments me gel wot!" He chuckled good with good nature and waggled his ears. "Hope Hi don't end up facin' yeh miss Clearpetal, wouldn't want teh mess up those devilishly fine features of yers..." He cleared his throat again, surprised the masked compliment had escaped his lips. There was just something about this hare.

It was then that Tamm appeared on the scene. The young hare seemed as gregarious as ever. This made Tel smile. He remembered his younger days fondly and Tamm reminded him of himself back then.

"Aye master Tamm, indeed we've entered our bloomin' names wot! Care teh stand up teh a boxin' champion like miss Clearpetal 'er?"

“Try not to break each other, or the rest of the fort, too much. I only brought one bag.”

Akira leaned his head against his mates, watching the two hares with bright interest. The more he thought about it, the more it seemed likely that Spencer may have arranged this whole thing just to have a match with the fort Gatekeeper. He was curious to know what sort of reason the field surgeon would give for wanting to pummel Teltoli and his infinite kindness. In fact, the very idea that someone wished the hare any sort of harm was surprising. Yet here was proof, in the form of a very formidable boxing opponent.

"Mhm. . . very interesting!"

"Hope Hi don't end up facin' yeh miss Clearpetal, wouldn't want teh mess up those devilishly fine features of yers..."

Spencer parried the wordplay swiftly and attacked with a thrust, tapping the Tower Commander firmly on his chest.

"Count on it Riverbucko! The night's not ovah untill we've torn up the ring far's I'm concerned! An afterward you c'n let pretty little SilverRose here stitch up yer knuckles after their meeting with my 'visage' eh wot!"

Jelal and Tammelo greeted Teltoli, and Spencer eyed them approvingly. They both looked eager and able.

"Aye master Tamm, indeed we've entered our bloomin' names wot! Care teh stand up teh a boxin' champion like miss Clearpetal 'er?"

The field surgeon winked broadly at the young hare and otter. "Indeed we have. Seems you two could use a good match. Perhaps you ought to cross fists with each other wot?"

Teasingly, she jangled the immense amount of keys hanging from Teltoli's belt.

"I wouldn't challenge ol' jingle-ears here, all he seems capable of is hard-hitten' flattery!"

-

Akira gave Silver another small peck on the cheek before standing up.

"Ok! . . . It's about time to start don't you think? Wish me luck!"

Picking up the bell out of the sand, Akira grinned at Silver before strolling casually into the center of the ring. Fortbeasts were all around the sides, talking, laughing, joking and betting on the nights events. The torchlight flickered brightly through the milling creatures, finally being able to compete with the setting sun, which had just dropped below the horizon.

Akira looked around for a moment, and then swept the bell hard with both hands into one of the posts, causing the steel instrument to crash out a resounding ding. Steel was not known for making bells of beautiful tone, but it was loud.

"Creature's of Black Arch! Welcome to the annual dance!"

The warriors around the ring let out a cheer and a few warcry's. The squirrel let his banded tail sway lightly behind him as he tossed the bell into the sand by the post and spread his paws out turning around to see who the first challenger would be.

"Can I have our first fighter brave enough to step into the ring, call out their desired opponent, and join me?!"

((Tammelo and Tenalia: it’s good to see you posting again!))

A smile appeared on Avirly’s face in the blink of an eye when she saw her friend Jelal join the crowd. The small vole had to shove her way past a few creatures before reaching the otter, and when she got there she nearly tripped over an excited hare that had rushed up to Teltoli.

“Eeh, look out there! Oh hey, Tenalia! Heh heh, nice mug, you might want to make sure my dad doesn’t see you with it though.” The volemaid chuckled and patted the timid mouse on the shoulder, but didn’t stop to chat more. Tenalia seemed a little preoccupied with Telo anyway. Two more lovebirds in the making, no doubt. Apparently Duran and Laurel weren’t bad enough. . .

“Hey Jelal! I’m so glad to see you here! I was worried I’d have to spend the evening with my parents all holding paws and being lovey the whole time. You’d think it was an actual dance and not a fighting tournament by the way everyone is acting tonight.” As she spoke Avirly watched with disdain as Akira gave his wife a peck on the cheek. “We’re surrounded by lovebirds!”

Despite her happiness at being with her friend, Avirly was more than a bit grouchy. Her aggravation was mostly derived from yet another confrontation with her mother, this time over the issue of Avirly signing up to fight. Laurel had firmly opposed the idea, citing that Avirly was “far too young for such things”.

Hmph.

As Akira rang the bell and called for the first fighter to step into the ring, the young volemaid took the chance to grab a mug and fill it without being noticed. She sniffed it first, and promptly got foam all over her whiskers.

“Bleh, Jelal, tell me I’ll never have to hear you’d rather be off rubbin’ noses than being in a jolly fight like we’ll see tonight! You did sign up, right?”

-

At the sound of the bell, Laurel’s attention immediately went to Akira. As the squirrel called for the first fighter, the volewife felt Duran give her paw an encouraging squeeze. Smiling at him, she elbowed her way through the crowd and pulled herself into the ring.

“I’m ready, Akira! Now, do I have to draw Rubena’s name out of the box or drag her into the ring in order to fight her?”

The panicked squeak that escaped Rubena’s lips only caused Laurel to grin all the more wickedly in her direction.

Jelal chuckled mirthfully when he heard Avirly declared her distinct dislike of anything romantic, at least at a place where everybeast was supposed to be focused on beating the daylights out of each other. He had to nod in agreement, finding there was something wrong with a "dance" when the compliments and loving glances were already flying faster than the punches. Still, he had lived a good life so far, and hadn't found much reason to hate the notion of romance with as much fervor as the young in heart did.

"Ha ha! Well, I gotta say, never rubbed noses proper with nobeast. I do plan on sockin' a few today though!" He crackled his knuckles and grinned heartily, just waiting for somebeast to step up and draw his name.

"Had a few pecks on the cheek, ta' be sure. Bein' a lovebird can't be so bad if it makes you smile so. If the right maid came up, I wouldn't be averse... well, I'm gettin' ahead of myself." Yes, though he had many stories to tell, and many encounters to share around the fire, he had never found the opportunity to start a family of his own. Of course, whenever he thought that way his mind went towards the family he had once had, and that was always a sore spot. Instead he rolled his shoulders and began to stretch, wondering who his own opponent would be. The idea of battling his own tower commander was surprisingly appealing. It'd let each other know what they were made of, and that was always important to a troop in his opinion.

"You ever been in a scrap like this, Avirly? You seem ta' like the idea well enough. Bein' the commander's daughter n' all, I'm sure you've at least laid paws on a weapon. I didn't see you put your name in the box! Er, not that I'd want ta' put a bruise over your eye or anythin'..."

(Thanks lady A! good to be back!)

Tenalia stared at Telo, impressed despite his stuttering. He was gonna fight! Boy, if she had half the nerves of him she'd throw her name in right now! That'd wipe the sneer off of Felice's face. But she had no idea how to punch someone. Did you have to take turns?

"What you got there?"

"Huh? The little mousemaid looked down at the mug in her paws. Oh right! The stuff. . . the stoof? Stoot? Oh right! Inspired by Telo's bravery, Tenalia felt a little surge of courage. This ought to be impressive.

She gave the mouse a casual look, that she assumed was pretty relaxed, and shrugged.

"Oh y'know. . . just some Stout. . ."

And, watching Spencer aggressively tap Teltoli on the chest out of the corner of her eye (for inspiration perhaps?), she took a nonchalant swig of the dark brew.

Fortunately Avirly was passing at that very moment to give the mousemaid a pat on the back. This prevented her from spewing the foul stout all over Telo.

"Oh hey, Tenalia! Heh heh, nice mug, you might want to make sure my dad doesn’t see you with it though.”

Instead she managed to choke it down, only coughing a little as she nodded her thanks to Avirly. Trying to keep her cool despite the fact that she just drank the most disgusting thing she'd ever tasted, she squeaked out to Telo, "You know, *cough* to keep the muscles loose. . mleh.. ."

Akira's bell dinged loudly and caused Tenalia to . .. well she didn't jump this time. She felt more relaxed! Confident even! She took another quick sip out of the mug, and nodded at the ring.

"Lets go watch!"

Then, without thinking about it, she tossed her name into the box. Whoa. . . this was a magical drink. Maybe another sip?
