“Shaymon!”

She pushed open the boy’s 6th year dorm room, and walked in, not caring if another one of the boys was in there. Cyprus. Henri. Whatever. She just stood there in her short pajama bottoms shorts and baggy t-shirt, one side dipped down over her shoulder. It was on of Riu’s old t-shirts that he’d grown out of, or accidentally shrunk in the wash…

Shaymon was sitting there on his bed, Indian style with his legs crossed, his elbow on his knees, head in his hand, flipping idly through a Quidditch magazine. He looked shocked at the outburst, but once he saw her angry look instead of a panicked one he grinned and chuckled, replying with a mocking shrill voice. “What?”

She marched right in. There was no one else in the room. “Give it back.” She stood at the edge of his bed, while he sat back from his magazine, arms out behind him to hold him up.

“Give what back?” But he was grinning, giving him away.

“You stole my lucky shoelace!”

“What?” He grinned and held up his wrist. Her black shoelace was tied there along with his various other beaded bracelets. “This?” And he grinned and laughed as she lunged towards him, grasping towards his wrist, which he held away from her.
She grabbed him around the waist, which caused him to giggle – he was ticklish – and he fell backwards, nearly falling off the bed.

He spoke through laughter, his eyes bright. “Wait. Stop! I need it for- for-”

“So you can ask a girl out or something?” She wouldn’t let up.

“Quidditch!” He managed to get out. “Quid-ditch!”

She let up, sitting back, realizing with a blush that she was straddling him. Both were breathing heavy and Shaymon was grabbing his side still laughing slightly, his face beat red but probably for a different reason.

“Quidditch?” Raising an eyebrow. She realized she should get up.

He nodded, one hand going up to touch her side. Her arm. “Arg, I have a stitch in my side now.” But he was smiling. “You’ve killed me… over a shoelace.”

“Shut up.” She slapped his chest, ready to get off of him, but he grabbed her arm with another laugh.

“Ow…”

It was about that time that someone walked in the door, and they both looked.

He remembered the curve of Lynn Felder's shoulders - her elegance and grace as she walked down the staircase at the Godwin Manor for the debutante. She looked beautiful. And he was engaged to her.

Running his hands in his blond hair, he mussed up, and sighed staring at his reflection - those cobalt blue eyes staring back at him in deep thought. There was something off about her though - how she didn't spend so much time around him anymore...And more time around Shaymon Ross. He was her cousin, it should be expected, but it just felt as if there was something more there. Didn't she love him the way he loved her? Of course, she did. He threw himself an unsure smile.

Throwing a pair of jeans on and blue baggy Nike sweatshirt, he sprayed on his deodrant and stepped out of the shower room. Then the necklace came to his mind. That vial around Lynn's neck - a gift from Shaymon. Jealousy bit him hard, and he told himself that it was nothing. There were cousins. She loved him, Cyprus Kyst.

Walking into his dorm room to collect his gear before heading out, he stumbled across something he much rather have seen in his nightmares. Lynn was straddling Shay - their faces red, and breathing heavily.

They hadn't seemed to have noticed him quite yet, but then they turned their faces towards him. He realised his mouth had been hanging open slightly and he shut it, only raising an eyebrow.

His eyes sought out Lynn's, his doubts and suspicions only growing all the more, and he said in a generally flat tone, "I'd get off him unless you really do wish to kill him."

In a hope to see if she still cared about him, he glanced quickly to her hand to see the ring he'd given her still sitting there. Good. But what would he have done otherwise? Sending the cousins a small smile, he fell onto his bed and picked up a Quidditch magazine, briefly mulling over the contents before turning his attention back to Lynn, "How've you been keeping?"

Well… this certainly wasn’t good.

“Cy!” Her voice rather shrill as she really hadn’t been expecting this to happen. She realized she was still straddling Shaymon, her thighs against his sides still from trying to hold him place while he’d trashed around.
It took her about a millisecond to ease herself off of him, moving to sit by his side.

Shaymon’s amused look very quickly disappeared with a rather sober look, and Lynn figured it was because he realized how the situation might look.
But what did that mean? Did that mean he’d considered the possibilities as well, or impossibility really.
They used to get into tickling/ wrestling wars when they were little, Lynn always winning because she wasn’t very ticklish. But did cousins stop doing that sort of stuff when they realized they could become attracted to each other?

There must be a point when lines couldn’t be crossed without awkwardness.

She should have known that from the very first moment she started to get jealous over him hanging out with other girls. Or… when he’d grown up a little bit and removed his shirt and her first thought had been “whoa…”

No… wrestling was certainly not allowed anymore.

Lynn couldn’t help but feel annoyed as Cyprus picked up a magazine and began to look through it instead of becoming angry.
Maybe it just further showed that her and Shaymon weren’t possible.

She was sure she was still beat red as she slipped of Shay’s bed to sit next to Cyprus on his. She was sure not to even pass a look in Shaymon’s direction.

“Good. How have you been?” Then in an effort to fix the situation, gave him a quick kiss on her lips.
Unknown to her, Shaymon looked away at her action.

“Shaymon stole my lucky shoelace…” She told her fiancé with false bravado. “You should defend my honor and retrieve it.”

But Shaymon was suddenly getting off the bed, and Lynn turned rather distressed eyes on him. He was untieing the shoelace, a decidedly fake smile on his face. “Don’t worry about it Kyst, I’ve got it covered.” And he handed Lynn the rather silly looking string.

Lynn reached out her hand and slowly took it from him, her gaze still on his face. “But- Quidditch…”

He shrugged.

“Good. How have you been?”

He failed to respond to her immediately as her lips met his, and when she moved away, he felt another crave for her touch. It tasted so sweet - so like Lynn. But as she did so, he didn't fail to notice how Shay turned away from them. He burned inwardly. So there was something going on. She was his fiancée for the love of God!

"I'm just as peachy," Cyprus answered, though his tone said the contrary.

“Shaymon stole my lucky shoelace…You should defend my honor and retrieve it.”

He let out a little laugh, and feeling just the galant knight he thought he should be for his princess, he made to give a mock hard look to Shay. He was just about to demand in an obviously fake voice to give the shoelace back - when Shay just gave it to him. Straight off the bat.

“Don’t worry about it Kyst, I’ve got it covered.”

It was the way he said Kyst as if it were some disease almost - and his smile...it definitely did not look like that when he was with Lynn back then. Fighting back a gutteral snarl and the urge to tell him to watch himself. Watch the line he was so covertly stepping over.

"But- Quidditch…"

His voice was even, but he sent a warning glance towards Shay, "Oh, I'm sure he'll be fine - he's good at everything - magic, girls...so Quidditch should be nothing for him. Good luck."

She felt the hair on the base of neck rise from the tone in Cyprus’ voice. She wasn’t facing him, and she was suddenly afraid to. His tone was controlled, but there was an undertone there she’d heard him use to various people before. It showed he was pissed off, and the look Shaymon was giving him over her shoulder was a dead give away to the obvious.

His eyes narrowed. A deep frown on his face. A bring it on type look if she ever saw one.

If she didn’t do something soon there would be a fight.

She twisted to smile at Cyprus, catching the glance he was giving Shaymon before it faded away. “He’s not good with girls.” And she laughed, almost a cruel laugh. Words were tumbling out. The best way to fix the situation… “All the girls he likes don’t like him back.”

Shut up, Lynn. Shut up!

But she’d all ready started. Stupid. Stupid.

“Isn’t that right, Shay?”

When did she become such a bitch?

Shaymon was standing rather stiffly beside his bed, his arms at his side, his fists clenched as well as his jaw. She realized she really did hurt him.

She turned away, unable to stand it anymore, a hand clutching onto Cyprus’ sweater, her eyes wide out of view of him, she bit so hard on her lip that she tasted blood, her forehead nearly pressing against Cyprus’ neck.

Make him go away. Make him go away.

“Can we go somewhere else?” She spoke it quietly against Cyprus’ skin, her voice shaky.

But before Cy could answer, Shaymon spoke up. Aparently he heard her comment. “Don’t bother. I’ll leave.”

She didn’t turn around until she heard the door close behind him.

Oh Lynn. The air around them had thickened so much that it could be cut with a sharp knife. He could tell that Lynn was trying to diffuse it - stop the boys from fighting, but it actually worked in his favour. She had, instead of turning the atmosphere into a humourous one, humiliated Shaymon in front of him.

“He’s not good with girls. All the girls he likes don’t like him back. Isn’t that right, Shay?”

Bad move. Shay visibly stiffened and Lynn had turned into him. He embraced her with his heart honestly opening up to welcome her into his arms.

But a malicious smile lit his face as he looked straight back at Shay. This was war.

“Can we go somewhere else?”

Her voice tickled his skin, and he looked down at her to stroke her hair, and he had every intention of leaving Shay behind to mull over his own actions. But then Shay beat him to it again.

“Don’t bother. I’ll leave.”

"Love to see you later," Cyprus muttered more to himself, sarcasm dripping all over the words.

But the moment he left, Cyprus felt elated. His high on Lynn began to manifest and he simply pleased himself by watching her, and taking in every detail. He was beginning to get very good at interpreting her body language - and this was the reason why. He felt he could just waste away his entire day just watching her. He loved her so much. But by doing so, he was also learning more about her.

She was so intoxicating...but right now, he needed to soothe her.

Touching her arm, he said, "Don't worry yourself, he'll be fine. You're first blood cousins...He won't hold anything against you...You're his sister."

He placed a light kiss on her cheek, before drawing her into him again.

She felt him watching her, but she was used to it. She actually loved it. To be watched so intently by someone with feelings for you. Acting like you had no idea what they were going… going about your business like it was nothing while at the same time feeling those butterflies in your stomach.

She was feeling the butterflies, and a ton of guilt.

"Don't worry yourself, he'll be fine. You're first blood cousins...He won't hold anything against you...You're his sister."

She nodded, feeling tears sting her eyes that she pushed back immediately. That was it in an nut shell wasn’ t it? His sister. Of course.

Part of her wanted to run after Shaymon, but instead she simply twisted around into Cyprus’ arms fully, pulling her knees up as she practically sat in his lap, feeling warm and safe as his arms enveloped around her.
There was no denying her made her happy, but she often craved for the fun they had when they were being secretive. When they snuck around the school and met in hallways and library. Sneaking off to unused classrooms to make out.

None of that happened anymore. They were comfortable, and accepted. They were engaged.

With her face pressed against his neck and breathed in his soapy smell and the distinct smell of him. She loved it, but it also annoyed her.

She was so confused.

“Cy…” She wound her hands up past his sweater to rest on his firm, warm back. “Do you miss sneaking around? I mean… when we first started to date. Not that we could do that now since everyone knows but…”

She wasn’t making much sense. Taking a deep breath, she blurt out. “This can’t be it. It seems like since we’re engaged everything is just set like that with no discussion. Like…” She sat up to look at her face properly, but she sighed and averted her gaze. “Never mind…”

Why was she making a big fuss about this? Since she found out they were betrothed, she’d gone through a period of loathing him even. She liked him better when she wasn’t supposed to be with him.
That was when she developed stronger feelings for Shaymon.

There she was. His Lynn. She lay curled up, like a kitten, in his lap, and his arms stayed around her, sharing his body heat with her. God, she made him happy. Whether she realised it or not, everything she did sent him insane - crazy about her. Crazy for her.

For a moment, he remembered the times before their engagement had been announced. How they used to sneak around - finding empty classrooms, desolate aisles in the library. Just thinking about made his lips find her own, placing a lingering kiss on them.

He was happier now - they needn't be worried or stressed out about their relationship. It was open for the world to see - to envy - to adore. He was betrothed to the girl he loved! Who could have asked for more? Who could have been luckier than he? Even Shaymon couldn't do a thing about it...

“Cy…Do you miss sneaking around? I mean… when we first started to date. Not that we could do that now since everyone knows but…”

Her hands had found their wway up his back, and he slowly returned the gesture, running his hand in circles around the small of her back. Giving her a confused look, he showed he wasn't quite sure of what to say. Was she telling him that they should start sneaking around again? But where was the adventure in that when there was nothing to hide?

“This can’t be it. It seems like since we’re engaged everything is just set like that with no discussion. Like…Never mind…”

"What are you saying, Lynn?" Cyprus's voice was soft, but it was because it felt as if there was something lodged in his throat...Was she saying that she didn't want to be engaged with him. His hands froze on the small of her back, and slowly came out to just hold her lightly around the waist. Did she not love him?

She didn’t like how quiet his voice got, and she momentarily paniced. She hadn’t meant for him to get upset, but the look on his face showed he was worried by her words. Maybe even a little bit startled.
She felt like a complete idiot, because she didn’t even know what she was saying.

She laughed and it came out bit wobbly. “I’m not exactly sure if I’m saying anything really.” She shook her head, turning her gaze to his chest, her curls falling over her shoulder. “Just forget I said anything, I’m confusing myself.”

In the silence that followed, Lynn quietly placed her head against Cy’s shoulder again, absentmindedly tugging at his sweater and running her hands up along his side.

Then she spoke again. The room was too quiet for her, it made her feel edgy. “I mean… I don’t even know if you want to have sex after you’re married or before.”

Stupid thing to say really. But it was something she’d been wondering about since the sleepover with Ginette and Elsie. They’d talked about this stuff, and she’d given it much thought. Elsie was waiting till after marriage, but Lynn wasn’t sure what she wanted, and was unsure what Cyprus wanted.

She sat up to look at his face again, her face expressionless.

“I’m not exactly sure if I’m saying anything really. Just forget I said anything, I’m confusing myself.”

His frowned deepened slightly, even more confused than he had thought he was. What was wrong with her? But the moment her head was on his shoulder, her hands running up and down his sides, he relaxed and traced his fingers up and down her back.

It was nice like this - quiet, with nothing to think about, but her. He wanted this to last forever, with nothing to disturb them.

His eyelids felt heavy, and he felt himself wanting to drift off into a pleasant sleep, with his fiancée by his side. But before he could even suggest the innocent notion -

“I mean… I don’t even know if you want to have sex after you’re married or before.”

If she had read his mind, she had read it wrongly. He hadn't meant it like that - had he? A hot flush began to come over him, unsure of what to say, and his mouth felt uncharacteristically dry. Running his tongue over his lips, he finally said, "I...It's up to you, Lynn. I don't mind if you want to wait...or you know..."

...You know?! Was he a man or what? Why was he getting so nervous about this? She was going to be his wife for God's sake, how could he have forgotten that sex would obviously become an issue sometime?

"I won't force you into anything you don't want," he settled on that in honesty, but also thinking it would be the right thing to say.

She deflated slightly at his answer, as if she’d wanted him to answer in a more sure-f-himself way. But she knew that wouldn’t be like him.
What was wrong with her? He was being sweet and gentle and saying he wasn’t going to pressure on her to do something if she didn’t want to do it.

Did she want to? She wasn’t sure.

What would she have done if he said he wanted to before marriage?

She smiled after a moment – as real as a smile as she could manage in her confusion – and turned away from him, staring at the wall over Shaymon’s bed. He’d put up a poster of his favorite Quidditch team, and a small picture of Verdy, a beautiful witch singer that Lynn remembered doing dance numbers to when she was younger. Putting on little presentations for her brother and Shay.

She smiled for real suddenly, and turned back to Cyprus. “I don’t want to wait until after we’re married. That’s too far away.”

Because she wanted to get it over with, and they wouldn’t be getting married until they finished school.

She smiled once more before slidding off the bed and moving over to Shaymon’s. Plunking herself down on the side of his bed so that, if Cy were to turn towards her, their knees would be nearly touching.
Her eyes drifted from Cyprus’ knees to the picture on his bedstand. Lynn and him sat on a blanket with food spread around them. A picnic they’d set up over summer, before the debutante, in the Felder’s back yard.
Father hadn’t died yet.
