It was weird when your twin brother and best friend were having an "affair" that your best friend doesn't know you know about but you've really already found out from said twin brother. Though, things in Lynn's life really never have been anything less than complicated, as she remembers the crush she had on her cousin (which still just might be there), dealing with her drunk mother and bipolar brother and a fiancé she'd secretly been dating before the announcement of the engagement.

Complicated indeed.

Not to mention her father's long awaited death occurring before he could dance with her at her debute.

Though, granted, she hadn't been overly surprised to find out about Riu and Ginette. In her opinion, it had been a long time coming. Only... she thought that perhaps Ginette wouldn't be dating Eric when the whole thing occurred.

She'd found out exactly what occurred when her brother came to her room after they'd come home from the Godwin Manor. The debutante had been "a success" says her mother, and Riu had been overly quiet but distinctly cheerful after he returned from....well... she hadn't know from where at the time.

No wonder he was so bloody cheerful.

She'd been combing her hair out when he came into her room, hovering in the doorway until she invited him in. He'd sat on her vanity while she stared at her reflection behind his side. He'd asked her pointblank if she loved Cyprus. She told him she wasn't sure, which was the truth. And then she, point blank, asked him if he loved Ginette.

He'd only stared at her a moment before saying that he'd "done a bad thing" and for a moment, Lynn had assumed the worse, which really wasn't what had actually occurred. Shock of all shocks, he'd told her his disorder played a small part in it, but said that she didn't stop him.
Quite a lot to take in at once, and he left her speechless sitting on her stool in front of the mirror, still clutching her brush.

Before he could leave, she asked the question again.

Do you love Ginette?

He'd replied that he didn't think he could love anyone, but said that she makes him happy.

Lynn thought all this as she unpacked her things in the dorm room, slowly piling her books at the end of the bed and thinking about her own feelings for Cyprus. Perhaps he brother was unable to love, but was the same true for her?

She couldn't help but think of the jealousy she'd felt as she watched Shaymon dance with all those girls that night.
"I don't still like him." She told the air with absolute resolution that she wasn't sure she truly believed.

Having entered the main hall again, still feeling a bit jittery from what she had done, Ginette could notice heads turning towards her. Yes, they had noticed her absence all right, but thankfully Riu wasn't with her and nor had he entered the hall at the same time as her, or from the same direction. Without a blush, she smiled at the nearest and stealthily took her place by her younger brother.

By the look her siblings were giving her, they most likely knew what had happened, but what was strange was that Eric didn't seem to know. Which she wasn't complaining about for sure. In fact, she completely behaved as if the past hour hadn't even passed as she spoke genially with everyone once more.

It was only until she was on her own, brushing out her curls so she could tie her hair into a braid that her sister came into her room. Sophie eyed her carefully and seeing a love bite on the base of her neck, raised an eyebrow.

"Ginette, that thin ice is close to breaking..."

"But it hasn't broken yet," was her defiante response.

"...Do you love him?"

"Who, Eric?"

"Riu."

Thinking back over that conversation, Ginette knew why she hadn't answered and just sighed before taking Sophie's hair in her hands and french plaited it, telling her about a girl who appeared to be quite rude at the debutante.

It was purely because she didn't know if she loved him - she knew her mistake though. That was telling Eric she loved him, because right now, she frankly had no idea if she honestly did. All she knew that both boys made her happy, but Riu just a little more.

Ignoring the wondering eyes of a few boys as she walked up the stairs to Lynn's dorm, she knocked twice before entering. She could guess that Riu had probably told her...which would make things very awkward. Hopefully her best friend wouldn't shun her completely and hear her out if need be...

She jumped when someone knocked at her door, and spun around just as it was opening. She felt herself tense up a moment when she saw it was her best friend, then untensed.
She'd just act like she had no idea what happened.
"Hey Ginette." And she grinned, hoping it didn't look suspicious and sly. Like I know what you did.

"Did I leave my chap stick at your house?"

Lip chap? For Merlin's sake... why would she give a damn about chap stick? She nearly rolled her eyes at her own stupidity and in an effort to forget the question she continued to pull things out of her bed. It wasn't till it was in her hand that she realized what she'd done.

In her hand was a very expensive looking necklace, danging from her fingers in plan view. The white gold caught the light, the white gold vial hanging from it. Fairly blood inside. Expensive because of it's rare properties. Everlasting happiness and luck supposibly.

She held her breath, very conscious of the fact she was blushing, remembering when Shaymon had placed it around her neck a few days after the debutante. How he'd smiled shyly at her and told her he'd been saving up to get it for her, for her "big day".

She hadn't gotten such a nice present from anyone else. She'd been overwhelmed and only able to stare at him. She remembered his nervous look after she hadn't said anything in response, and his quick backtracking, telling her if she didn't like it, he could get her something else and she'd cut him off telling him she loved it.

She blushed even more when she remembered him placing a small kiss at her temple before enveloping her in his arms. He'd whispered in her ear. "You'll have the most amazingly wonderful life. I know you will."

How ironic.

I do not still like him...

Well, it was too late to hide it, so she fondly slipped it onto her neck.

“No, I don’t think you did,” was her honest response.

Lynn was busy sorting through her stuff when she pulled out a beautiful white gold necklace, with a vial of fairy blood in it. Lucky girl. Seeing a strange expression of her face as she looked at the jewellery, Ginette shuffled. Well, she was nervous. Lynn must know – she had to know, what she had done.

“That’s a beautiful necklace, Lynn,” Ginette smiled softly, and sat on the edge of her bed.

Awkward. Awkward. Awkward. Suddenly, she felt incredibly queasy. She started concentrating on the window and the view outside, but knowing it would seem stranger still to have her silent she said conversationally, “So, where did you get it from? It really suits you.”

Eric. Riu. Eric. Riu. She was back to square one. Square one, six years ago. Riu. Eric. Riu. Eric. Who to choose? Well, she didn’t really know if Riu liked her for her…maybe he was just after sex. Yes, that might be it. He hadn’t said anything…remotely close to telling her he liked her, right? Or was she just obliterating that part from her memory? She couldn’t be sure. But then, she hadn’t spent a lot of time with Eric recently…they were drifting apart, although the elastic was still ready to spring back, that much she was certain of. So if that was true, then she should choose Eric, right?

But what if Riu really did like her? Then what? And what if it was really over between her and Eric? Well…would she go for Riu? Tentatively? There was a welcome back party being thrown by the Robeless that evening. She wasn’t going to go, but she felt for sure that after that mysterious meeting in the Astronomy Tower, Jay might just drag her back there. Her brother was a fan of big gatherings.

“Lynn, I’m sorry,” Ginette suddenly blurted out…she couldn’t keep it from her best friend, anxiety and worry etched her forehead, “I think I did something very wrong.”

…Which I’m sure you know about…

"So, where did you get it from? It really suits you."

She froze a moment before answering. "Shay gave it to me." Then left it at that. Hopefully she hadn't heard the comment Lynn said before Ginette knocked on the door.

She stared at her best friend a moment, as if daring her to say something about it before taking up her books and turned away from Ginette to set them on one of the desks in the room. She wondered where Ev was.

Her next words made Lynn freeze again, before slowly setting her books down in their places. "For what?"
But she felt guilty lying to Ginette, so she turned around before the other girl could say anything, putting on a small smile. "You know, Riu said basically the same thing." She eyed her friend carefully a moment before continuing. "But... he told me you make him happy so..." And she shrugged carelessly before walking over to Ginette.

"You don't need to apologies. Really." And she reached out to touch Ginette's forehead as if wanting to smooth her worry about. Then she frowned herself. "Does Eric know though?"

At the party, it seemed like he didn't know. But perhaps Ginette had told him before he went home that summer. Perhaps she was going to tell him? Part of her hoped she wouldn't, as she didn't want Riu to end up with another scar, or worse. Eric got quite violent when angry, and Riu, though quick with spell work, wasn't much of a match when it came to Eric's anger.

Unless Riu got angry back.

Catching Lynn's rather threatening stare, she chose, and what seemed wisely, not to take the subject any further. She remembered very clearly how Lynn used to feel about Shay - it was part of the reason, apart from his womanising personality, that made her stay away from him. She didn't want to have any part in it.

Well, she didn't want any part in any of her friend's affairs - she hadn't even spoken to Cyprus. She should considering he was engaged to her best friend...but she didn't want to.

You know, Riu said basically the same thing. But... he told me you make him happy so..."

So she did know...but wait -

"I do?"

But before Ginette could continue, Lynn said something that made her feel queasy all over again.

"Does Eric know though?"

"If he did, do you think I'd be here?" She gave a laugh, knowing all to well it wasn't a funny joke, "I'm scared to tell him..."

There. She'd told her the truth. It was usually Ginette who was the strong one. Never afraid of anything. But Eric scared her all right. When he was drunk or on a high, it scared her.

"I want to break up with him...I just...I just don't know how..."

There. Another weight seemed to lift off of her back. But she still felt nervous - what if word passed on to him? She knew he'd never hurt her - not her, but Riu? Quite possibly, yes...This would not be a pleasant affair at all...Drama. She hated it.

Lynn frown only increased at Ginette's words and she sunk into her bed, before following back against the blankets, her arms above her head in a position that looked very carefree. Or simply that she'd given up.

"You two... honestly, you always get yourself in bad situations." She was biting her lip, trying to think this over. Would she be angry if Ginette didn't leave Eric for her brother? Probably... but then again if she did, there would be even more trouble.

But there would be hell to pay if Eric found out all this was going on behind his back. The last thing she wanted was for Riu and Ginette to get hurt.
Ginette was afraid of her own boyfriend? Well... that wasn't good.

She passed her best friend a worried glance before speaking. "I don't know. What do you think is best? I mean... if you want to keep it from Eric, I won't say anything."

And she smiled to show she was serious. She didn't know Eric, at all really. Ginette was her friend, and Riu her twin. It was them she cared to protect. "If you can stay away from gossip, you might be able to get away with it."

She rolled onto her stomach, staring down at her necklace as it rolled onto her blankets. She smiled and moved it so it sat in her palm. "Do you love Riu?" She asked, remembering asking Riu if he loved her. Remembered Riu asking her if she loved Cyprus.

"You two... honestly, you always get yourself in bad situations."

Ginette sighed at the truth in Lynn's words, but they sounded a little patronising. It wasn't as if she'd asked to be in this situation. If everything were perfect with the world, she wouldn't be in this position. She'd be single, and Riu wouldn't have bipolar depression.

"I don't know. What do you think is best? I mean... if you want to keep it from Eric, I won't say anything. If you can stay away from gossip, you might be able to get away with it."

Get away with it? It sounded as if she was committing a heinous crime. Okay, so maybe she was relationship wise but really...And obviously, she didn't want Eric to find out. And if he had to know, it would be better to have it from herself...not from anyone else.

"When the time comes, I'll tell Eric," Ginette said firmly, "Alone. I need to do it, not anyone else. And gossip? Well, that's a little too much to ask for, but it's not like there hasn't been rumours flying around about a secret relationship between Riu and me anyway..."

Stupid. That's what it was. She shouldn't have slept with him, she wouldn't be in this stupid mess.

"Do you love Riu?"

"Do I - ?" Ginette's voice hitched in her throat for what seemed the umpteenth time this year. She didn't know what to say or how to say it. She didn't know what love was...she didn't know if she loved Riu...and she didn't want to make a mistake as she did with Eric, because she was sure that she didn't exactly love him now.

Looking at Lynn properly, she answered, "I don't know...but he makes me happier than I've felt with Eric in a long time."

A smile and a little blush, but her eyes caught Lynn's necklace again and her mind began to wonder about her friend's situation.

Lynn looked up from her necklace to pass Ginette a curious look. She didn't quite understand love herself so didn't know why she asked Ginette the question. She supposed it had to do with the fact she always thought people should have sex if they loved each other. Was she wrong in thinking that? Was it just enough that they cared about each other? They certainly had been friends for a long time and Lynn knew them both enough to know they were good for each.

Maybe simply because they both couldn't make up their minds about things.

Wrapping her hand around the vial, she kicked her legs back and forth above her like a child and smiled a bit whistfully. "I don't know what love is like. I don't think I do anyway." She frowned to herself a moment looking across the room. Staring at the wall as if looking for something there. The answer to all her questions. "I don't know anymore..." her voice had become a whisper and she sat there in complete silence a moment before sitting up onto her knees, still staring at the wall.

She suddenly turned to face Ginette. "My mother said love can come after you marry a person. I hope that's true." She was freightened to death of getting married. Cyprus seemed so sure.

And suddenly she burst into tears. Full out tears that ran down her face and that she tried to hide by borrowing her head in her hands. "I don't love him though. I don't love him!" She wasn't sure if she were talking about Cyprus or Shaymon, but as she said the next words she knew it wasn't about her fiancé. "I see him all the time and my heart hurts because I want to be with him but can't!"

"I don't know what love is like. I don't think I do anyway."

”I’ll be honest with you, Lynn,” Ginette answered with a sigh, “I don’t know what it is either…” Frowning slightly, she lay back on the bed, giving into her exhausted feeling.
Somewhere, that seemed far away she heard, "I don't know anymore..." It was a whisper, and curiosity got the better of her. Leaning up on her forearms to look at her, she saw that Lynn seemed to be far away too – where her voice seemed to have echoed.

"My mother said love can come after you marry a person. I hope that's true."

”I have no doubt that it can,” Ginette answered, “You can eventually learn to love someone…” But she paused, her forehead narrowed as she heard Lynn’s last words, “What do you mean?”

And then suddenly, she was in tears – streaming down her face. "I don't love him though. I don't love him! I see him all the time and my heart hurts because I want to be with him but can't!"

This wasn’t about Cyprus. Ginette got up and took Lynn in her arms as a mother would, and rubbed her back, “This isn’t about Cyprus is it?”

But then who could it be about? Her eyes caught the vial once more, and she put two and two together, “Shaymon Ross? Lynn, you know you are always going to be with him, though it may not be how you want it to be – because you are family…”

Well, she didn’t know what to say. Lynn evidently still had feelings for Shay, but that was not a good thing at all…

She cried even harder when Ginette said things wouldn't be how she wanted them to be. Because they were family. She grabbed onto Ginette's shoulders as if to pull herself closer to her best friend and pressed her face against her shoulder. Of course they couldn't be together.

That's why it hurt so much.

"I know! I know! But it doesn't mean I don't care!" She pulled herself away from Ginette, her eyes fierce, her face flushed. Tears pouring down her face. "I hate Cyprus!" Then she cried even more because she knew it wasn't true.

She let herself cry out. Till there where no more tears. Till her body shook with each hiccup. Until she was able to lay perfectly still on her comforter and stare up at the ceiling.

She took a deep, shaky breath before speaking. "I don't hate Cyprus..." She sounded exhausted. She felt exhausted. Watching Shaymon at the party dance with all those girls... the pain of his touch when he'd put the necklace around her a few days later. His smile haunted her. He always seemed to be watching her.

She wondered if he felt the same way. If he was trapped in the same, hopeless situation. "I'm a horrible person." She muttered, her face expressionless. "I should be happy to be with Cyprus. He takes care of me... he will take care of me."

She turned her face to look at Ginette but she didn't say anything. She couldn't think of any words.

Holding Lynn sercurely, she stroked her hair, waiting till the crying died down. There was nothing for it, but for her to just let it all out, and she did. Ginette smiled, happy that at least one of them had cried their worries out. It was her turn but she wasn't sure when she'd burst into tears yet. Possibly not now, or any time soon. She hated crying.

"I hate Cyprus!"

Now, she knew that wasn't true. Of all the things Lynn could have said, that was the one things that definitely wasn't true.

"I know you care," Ginette said, still motherly, "And I also know that's a lie."

A small smile now, as she looked down at Lynn. Finally Lynn was able to get control of herself once more, and Ginette let her go so she could sit up properly.

When Lynn spoke again, Ginette shook her head, her long curls swaying slightly whilst she did, "No. You aren't a horrible person. You're just stuck between two boys - and which you love. It's pretty much the same position as me, although there are those minor differences."

"And you're right," she continued, "Cyprus will take care of you, because he does care about you, and dare I say it, love you too. You'll be happy with him, Lynn."

Lynn sniffled and wiped at her eyes as she spoke. "The minor detail being you don't love them and the small fact one of them isn't your cousin." She sniffed extra hard and moved away from Ginette completely, moving off the bed and across the room.

She placed her hand on the clasp at the back of her neck, ready to undo the necklace and tuck it away where she couldn't dwell on it.

But as her fingers pressed against the white gold, she hesitated and lowered her hands to her side again, standing in the middle of the room, staring at the carpet and wishing she were a stronger person.

After a moment she turned to look back at Ginette, her expression trained into one of indifference that she only really used around her mother. Around people when she wanted to keep to herself, not let anyone in. "I'm not going to stop loving Shay... because I don't want to."

As she said the words, she knew them to be true. She liked loving him too much, no matter how much it hurt her. Besides... she'd already tried not to and it didn't work very well. She even had Cyprus to draw her attention away. That didn't work.

"I'll marry Cyprus... and love them both." She raised her chin in a stubborn matter, her hands lamely at her sides. "Can I be alone now... for a bit, Gin?"
