history
A Renfew native, he remembers a time when the town could still be described as 'charming'. He was raised on a small farm outside of town and while hell on wheels as all young boys are, Liam was kind even as a child. He'd squabble with his little sister, but he'd never stay mad at her. When he was ten his father died suddenly of a heart attack while he was at school, and when he came home that day he'd assumed responsibility as 'man of the house'. His mother never asked him to, he simply did as he'd seen his father do and took care of them, the best he could. And as he grew up into a young man, that continued when his sister left for college and through his mother's extended illness when he was in his mid-twenties. Family was all you had, as they said, and he kept his as close as he could, until they left him, one way or another.
Through his teen years he vet teched with a large animal veterinarian in the area, and had dreams of actually becoming a vet himself one day. The harsh reality of coming from a family without the means to pay for such a degree meant he didn't really look into it. His cousin in the fire department suggested the job of emergency technician and paramedic to help him pick up enough money to buy the engagement ring he'd been eyeing. He learned that people weren't so different from animals, both anatomically and personality wise. The ring had been for his high-school-sweetheart of sorts, Claire. They had started dating at sixteen and even though she'd moved off to the bigger city for university they'd been determined to make things work.
Distance made the heart grow fonder, they said, but it also made tempers a bit touchier. The arguments usually revolved around Claire trying to get him to move out to where she was and get into the certification programme she'd found for trauma techs. Liam had never been interested in moving out of Renfew, not for any real reason, except maybe just a sense of loyalty to the community that had helped raise him and support his mother when his father had passed away while he was still quite young. She couldn't understand it and constantly took it as he didn't want to be near her. After one particularly ugly fight, Liam had managed to get her to agree to just talk about it later- he had to go on call for the next twelve, it should give them plenty of time to cool down.
Instead, she'd apparently decided to just come home for the weekend and work things out in person, having said multiple times that phone calls usually made things worse, you couldn't see the other person's face. Half way through his shift an MVA call came through and when he responded, the ejection was the drunk driver and the entrapment was Claire. He performed CPR all the way back to the hospital but she'd died en route, and Liam just snapped. He'd always been the quiet, steady one in the department, handling even the most gruesome calls with a focus and kindness that was unique to him. But, this had been one step too far. He'd been suspended for six months due to his actions/behavior and in the mean time discovered that there was no form of coping mechanism that would take the hurt away so instead, chose to bury it, just to be functional. He had to go back to work, and give himself some kind of purpose, or he'd lose what he had left of his mind.
He'd started back and been paired with Alex Hysen, and after a couple of years or so of running as partners, they took a young resident doctor on a round of calls for a night to get her experience/hours in, when they'd responded to a call of a wild animal bite. They arrived and found no human victims, they'd all high tailed it if there were any, and instead saw the pathetic feral wolfdog responsible. Ever the soft heart, and having at least some vet tech history, Liam and got Alex to help him bring the poor thing into the bus to try and patch it up and get it to animal control. Instead, the thing had come alive in the last throes of energy it had and managed to bite and claw up the three of them, changing their lives forever.
The doctor was now residing at a hospital a little ways away, but the medics are still on roll with the emergency services in town, and the Barhead Basin pack alpha approached them almost immediately after the incident to make sure they had the support they needed to survive this new life they'd been drug kicking and screaming into. After being bitten, Liam had found living out on the outskirts of town was good in terms of not causing trouble or drawing attention, but it was hell on the livestock. The guidance and mentorship had been one thing, but once he got word that his sister needed a place to stay after she graduated (not to mention a place to avoid her ex) it gave him the chance to offer her the farmhouse, and the manor offered him a home where he wouldn't have to worry about ruining heirloom furniture or harassing livestock.
The pack had over time filled in for the family he'd lost over the years, and while it took longer than some of them would argue it should have, he and Alex finally moved forward with their relationship. They're both now regular pack members, and their medical skills are far too often employed in keeping their fellow pack members alive. Liam has recently been conscripted into the position of Beta male in the Basin pack, which he'd begrudgingly accepted because he wouldn't be able to /not/ take care of the pack whenever he could, and Kerik had damn well knew it when he asked. He's not entirely comfortable with being so (relatively) ignorant of his new lycan life and how it pertains to this position, but, day to day life hasn't changed, and that, along with his pack members returning without more holes in them than they left for the night, was all he could really ask for. |
