The 'house', as Eleanora liked to call it, was a little ways off from the residential neighborhood, not isolated but far out enough from the road to compensate for all the landscaping she'd ordered months prior. If the medical examiner was anything, it was prepared, and she wanted this day to be perfect. Knowing Adrian would likely have a veritable reaction when she saw the property for the first time, Eleanora had offered to drive the second half of the trip, at which point detective Adrian Sloan pointed out her increase in speed with a patronizing but teasing tone.
"Easy, Ellie. We're not in a rush."
She smiled as she caught another long tendril of brunette hair and pushed it away from her face, rolling up her window with her other hand as she did so. Eleanora bit down on her lower lip and grinned, light blue eyes gleaming with impish delight.
"I'm just excited is all."
"Uh huh. Did you pay for it in full?"
"Yup, all paid off."
"Right, well give me the receipt later so I can start paying you back half."
"Mm."
El pursed her lips together to contain her grin, concentrating on the road signs as she maneuvered the prim streets and cozy houses. Adrian stared out her window, taken by the peaceful, pleasant look of the place. It was all very neat and proper, and most of the houses looked similar. She liked the continuity of it; normalcy was definitely needed in her life right now. The idea of living in a homely little place with a white picket fence with Eleanora made the mental image of her near future that much more warming. She leaned back in her seat and adjusted the collar of her coat around her neck.
"How far out are we?"
"Far enough. We're almost there." She turned the corner onto a road that seemed to lead out into a stretch of unclaimed hills on the edge of town. Ahead was a house built separately from the rest, flanked on most sides by tall pine trees for a great amount of privacy without being completely isolated from the rest of the neighborhood. "Close your eyes."
"What? I'm not closing my eyes."
Eleanora glanced stubbornly at Adrian. "Close your eyes."
Adrian squinted, pressed her lips together with a grunt, then relented and settled a hand over her face. El pulled up into the cobblestone driveway and parked the cherry red Chevy in one of two spaces in the lot, across the pond from the house. Adrian's prized vehicle gave a purring rumble as the ignition was turned off.
"You can look now."
Adrian dropped her hand and turned her head lazily towards the building. Then her hazel eyes bulged.
"That is not a house!" She smacked a hand down on the arm rest in flustered panic as Eleanora unbuckled herself. "What the hell!"
Ellie smiled innocently at her. "You said whatever made me happy was fine with you."
"Yeah, but you said you found a cute little house! That's a lakeside mansion! Oh my god." She slumped forward in her seat and put her head in her hands, horrified over how she'd help pay for that. Then her head snapped back up. "Oh my god. How much did this place cost?"
"Nothing I couldn't afford," came the cheerful reply. Adrian narrowed her eyes at her redheaded girlfriend.
"My life's savings wouldn't make a dent in it, would it."
Eleanora lifted her shoulders and made an 'eehhhh, don't worry about it' kind of gesture before hurrying out of the car. Adrian followed suit, still giving the other woman the stink-eye. If there was one thing she hated about their relationship, it was that Eleanora was more than capable and willing to pay for everything. Literally, everything. She was starting to feel like a serious freeloader, but this was just ridiculous. A god damned mansion. There was no way she'd ever be able to pay back even half of its worth on her payroll.
"Come on, I'll show you around--"
"No, wait, we need to talk."
"Can we do it inside?"
"El, listen to me." She grabbed Eleanora by the shoulders and turned her around to face her. "I'm not okay with this."
"What? Why? But it's perfect for us. Is it because of the design? I'm sorry, I should have asked you about the--"
"It's not the design. It's this. All of this. I don't want you to keep paying for everything all the time, but you keep picking things that you know I can't afford. It's not fair to either of us, Eleanora."
Adrian never said her full name unless she was upset. Ellie stopped, sobered, and let her shoulders droop. "I'm sorry, Ade. I just wanted to do this for us. You're always doing everything else. Can't you just let me spoil you?"
The detective sighed. "You're spoiling me rotten already."
"Because I can afford to, and because I want to."
"Only if I can pay for dinner from now on."
Eleanora beamed. "Deal." She bounced up on the balls of her feet to peck Adrian on the lips. Adrian, being all legs, tilted her chin down and caught Ellie in her arms, lengthening the embrace with another slow kiss, their noses brushing together.
"You said something about a tour?" Adrian murmured against Ellie's lips, one hand lifting to play with those large curls of fiery red hair.
"Mmhmm. Wanna see the kitchen?"
"I was thinking more along the lines of the bedroom."
The petite redhead giggled. "Right this way, Detective."

The upside to dating an extremely wealthy doctor was that she could afford the best beds, and this one was no exception. Adrian sighed pleasantly as she stretched out her long legs before tangling them with Eleanora's again, curled around the smaller woman with the blanket sitting at their hips. The floor-to-ceiling glass door to their mini patio and enclosed yard was left an inch open to let in the fresh air, and the sheer white drapes fluttered softly in the breeze. Adrian lifted her head to properly examine the master bedroom for the first time. The basic furniture-- drawers, closets and bedside tables-- were all in place. A few large boxes were stacked up against one wall for them to unpack their clothing and items. The door to the en-suite washroom was propped open with more boxes.
"I owe you a million back massages for this," she sighed, dropping a kiss on Eleanora's shoulder and running her hand down along the redhead's side.
"Or you can keep doing what you're doing," Ellie said with a pleased moan, cuddling back against Adrian and rubbing her cheek against the pillow. The doctor was a very touchy-touchy kind of person. Any physical contact made her happy. She'd fluttered her baby-blue eyes shut and curled into a contented ball as Adrian leaned over her, brushed her red hair back from her face and planted a soft kiss on her cheek.
"Do you want some coffee?"
"Ooh! I'll come help you."
The redhead rolled out of bed faster than Adrian had moved, taking the blanket with her. With a smile, the brunette sat up and retrieved her dress shirt and underwear from the floor. The shirt just barely covered her lady parts, but she figured their distance from the neighborhood and the wall of trees surrounding the house was enough that she didn't have to shy from the windows. She turned in time to see Eleanora's petite, blanket-clad form scurry down the hall out towards the kitchen, chuckled, and followed suit.
The cool hardwood floor was smooth under her bare feet as she padded down the hall, peeking into every door on the way. Some had furniture, others were empty, presumably for them to decide what to do with it later. The living room was already set up with designer leather couches and widescreen TV, and it was an open-space alongside the kitchen and a spacious dining table. She traversed the wide island table into the stainless steel kitchen, where Eleanora was playing with the shiny coffee machine already plugged into the counter top.
"I think our coffee supply is in the top box over there, and the mugs will be in the bottom box."
"Right."
Adrian passed the redhead on her way, dropping another kiss on her bare shoulder before yanking open the top box and sifting through the items inside. Most of the boxes were Eleanora's things-- Adrian hadn't brought much with her from her old townhouse-- so it took her a moment to recognize a package of expensive coffee beans near the bottom, jammed in beside containers of spices and a box of tea bags. She put it on the dark marble counter top and slid it across to Ellie, then hefted the boxes aside to reach the bottom one. Sure enough, this one had all the mugs, plates and bowls, and two ceramic white mugs were produced.
She perched herself on a bar stool at the island while her girl ground up the coffee beans with the grinder. Eleanora released the switch, turned to glance over her shoulder, and blinked those large blue eyes of hers. "Do you hear a phone ringing?"
Distracted, Adrian turned around to pan her gaze across the living room and main entrance. There was a soft ringing coming from somewhere in the house, presumably the bedroom where they'd left their purses. Adrian slid from her seat. "I'll get it." The coffee grinder roared up again as she made her way down the hall and into the bedroom, throwing herself belly-down across the massive king-sized bed to reach her cellphone on the opposite bedside table. "Sloan."
"Ade, it's Brandy."
"Hey, B. How are you?"
"Fine. Just thought I'd call and see how you two were doing. Settled in yet?"
"Yeah, kind of. We haven't started unpacking yet, though."
Adrian sat up and slid off the bed, moving back down the hallway. The coffee grinder had quieted, and she could heard the soft 'clack, clack' of Ellie as she emptied the container of freshly ground beans into the machine. The redhead turned as she approached the kitchen and quirked her brows.
"Who is it?" she mouthed.
"It's Brandy." Adrian resumed her seat at the island.
Eleanora beamed. "Tell her to come over! You haven't seen her in a while, and we could use some help unpacking anyway."
"Right. Ellie wants you to come over." Adrian motioned at Eleanora to prepare a bigger pot of coffee. Ellie cheerfully went to work.
"Uh huh. That depends. Are you two naked?"
Adrian glanced at Ellie, wrapped in nothing but a blanket, and looked down at herself in nothing but red panties and a dress shirt. "No."
"Alright. I'll be over in a half hour. Text me your address."
"Kay."
She hit the 'end call' button and quickly tapped in their new address to Brandy's cell, then looked over at the curve of Eleanora's rear-end under the cocoon of sheets. She propped her chin up on one fist, allowing herself a moment to appreciate the view.
"So she's coming over?"
"Yup. In half an hour."
"We should probably put on some clothes then."
"Yup."
