/It had been a long and hard few days and Liam was still being... Liam. He was ma pouting, taking extra shifts, avoiding her and being an all around... Liam. It was infuriating! They hadn't been partners for that many years for him to just cold shoulder her like that. Yeah, okay so it had been a rough moon but that was over a damn month ago! She'd have stayed away on the moon just passed if she thought she could but she wasn't safe anywhere but the mansion and some stupid argument wasn't valid for putting the pack at risk.\
/She'd taken to spending more and more time at West's. It was closer in to work and with Liam taking the bus back to the manor, having taken all the available 'on call' shifts, she didn't see a point in the extra travel time. Besides, it was coming up on a certain anniversary and it was proving a little hard to celebrate it when the other half had been unceremoniously ripped from your life.\
/Alex's mind raced as she prepped dinner. West had given her a hard time about her cooking but there were a few things she could handle just fine and he hadn't complained so far. The veggies were cut up, ready to be fried after she'd sliced and seared the steak for fajitas. She had a little twist on the seasoning she'd come across, a lot by accident years ago but now she ran with it. Her mind was still running in alternately furious, hurt and helplessly frustrating circles when West came in.\

Not that he'd ever say it out loud, but, having Alex around more was worth whatever happened in his book. He knew that the kid had been important to her and he'd never gotten in the way of that, but he was a man who'd made up his mind long ago that kids weren't his thing. Never would be. And whatever else was going on that caused her to spend more time at his place, he'd be silently grateful for. Though he hated that it took lifealtering events to apparently encourage her to do so....
Letting himself into the apartment he locked the door and closed his eyes appreciatively as the smell of seasonings hit his nose. While Alex tended to make more disasters than dinners, she'd gotten a few things down to the point she bested him. Must be fajitas- she'd long ago taken over that meal from his responsibilities and he'd gladly taken up making the margaritas to go with them. At least he was useful. And judging by her expression as she prepped the meal, she would need hers a little bit stronger than usual.
Squatting to untie his boots he looked up and over at the kitchen and spoke up, amusement clear in his voice, but a touch of concern in his grey eyes.
Ye know that's dead already, right?

/Alex heard the door and waited for West to make his way to the kitchen, which was all of 5 steps in his apartment but she waited none the less. Her blue eyes lifted to his, matched by a slender blonde eyebrow.\
Dead, yes, sufficiently dismembered... no.
/She kept the edge from her voice but she was still strung tight and frustrated. She was also inwardly frustrated with how he'd handled the Mason situation. He'd been there for her sure, but she could sense the relief on him... smell it. At first she'd taken it for his relief she was back on even ground but she knew it for what it was now. When she had a level head she could reason it out and not blame him. Today... was not one of those times.\
/Alex waggled the knife at him as he opened his mouth to retort and finished slicing the steak when he thought better of it. She turned to the sink and washed the knife, then her hands and grabbed a glass to move it from the sink and the water on her hands caused it to slip. Naturally she went to catch it but the glass clipped the counter and shattered into her palm, opening up a long, arched cut on the palm of her right hand. She immediately swore in reaction as she let go from the pain and the rest of the glass shattered all over the kitchen floor. Alex immediately looked for a towel but it wasn't in reach as she could feel the blood beginning to pout down her hand and forearm. Turning the water on to cold she shoved her hand under the faucet and watched the sink turn red.\

West understood women enough that when a knife is waggled at you, you shut your mouth. Nothing you wanted to say was worth whatever that woman intended to do with that knife. Holding his hands up he left her to her work, using his toes to pry his boots off the opposite feet, and leaving them by the door. He'd made a move to try and offer his help, against his better judgement, but she /had/ washed and set down the knife so he should be-safe. The shattering of glass and Alex's sharp swearing proved that to be not the case and he immediately grabbed a handtowel from the bakers rack nearest him and went to the sink beside her.
Dismembering the steak I'll allow but I'd like your hands to stay like they are. Here...let me help.
The blood was still flowing pretty freely and not being trained in any medical skills (this is the man who superglued the tip of his right index finger back on to finish a job before going to the hospital), he reached into the sink to grab the wounded hand and put the hand towel to it, applying pressure enough to try and staunch the blood.
He didn't really even think twice, he wasn't at any risk from her blood like any other human might be, but it didn't really register to him that she would know that. Because she didn't know what he was. Or that he knew her secret, well one of them. It was one of those things that just...never came up...which meant it was about to in three....two...

/Panic was the last thing Alex did, despite the fact that it may have looked like she froze. She knew she wasn't going to bleed to death so she was, instead, assessing everything. And she had it all well in hand, literally, until the wildcard stepped in. See, on the job there wasn't a set of hands to just jump in on open blood. First off, he shouldn't have come into the kitchen with the glass on the floor and secondly...\
West, don't!
/She moved to pull her hands from his, not caring to hide her strength. He always came home with cuts on his hands from work and the swooping hero had just shoved his hands into the water with hers. Sure it thinned her blood but it also spread it EVERYWHERE!!! She did grab for the towel but pulled away from the water. She still had blood down her forearm ands she couldn't step away from him because there was a wonderful galaxy of shattered glass at her feet.\

The reaction was so unlike her she genuinely caught him off guard, so he let her wrench her hands away from him and take the towel. Blinking a moment he stayed where he was, the relatively thin barricade of broken glass between them feeling like a much larger gulf all of a sudden. Throwing his hands up, he turned and pulled the dust pan from under the sink and swept the glass up, knowing he'd need to go over it again for the little slivers but at least now she wouldn't be trapped.
Don't what? Help? Because there's a little bit of blood, Alex, at this point, I think I'd know if you had anything I needed to worry about. But fine, here, you've got an out now, go on and take care of it yourself like you always do-I don't know why I bother half the time, whatever I try to do obviously isnt enough to be useful.
His words were stiff and sharp as he spoke from his knelt position on the floor, finishing as he stood up and carried the glass filled dustpan to the trash, leaving her to escape the kitchen however she saw fit. He was tired of trying to help her any way he knew how only to be shoved aside like he wasn't good enough or useful enough. He wasn't medically trained like she was, didn't have the empathy she had with Mason, he wasn't so many things and that was what he was constantly reminded of when she pushed him away. But what he was was clever and he knew exactly why she'd pushed him away from potential contamination- but this was her chance to tell him, not for him to force it out of her. If she didn't think he was good enough for that too, well, it was about par for the course.

/His exasperation caught her off guard, so one for one. When he went for the dustpan she dropped her eyes to her hand and removed the bloodied towel so she could wash her arm under the still running water. Her initial shock dampened at his accusations. Just what did he mean 'take care of it herself?' Wasn't that the point of being an adult? She had never been dependant on him, and damn him for saying it because he'd hate it if she was! Alex shook her head as she cleaned her arm and hand and then set the towel back to her hand, applying pressure.\
Look, its reaction to not have you, or anyone jump in with blood and no gloves. You know your hands are always cut up and so do I.
/She gripped the towel with her cut hand and quickly washed the blood from the sink before crouching and grabbing for the bleach under the sink. No chances.\
And what the hell do you mean an out? I get that you've moved on, that you don't spare a thought for Mason, that's fine, but you can't expect the same from me.
/Did he really expect her to just fess up? Yeah, that was regular table top conversation. So he knew, and from his end it looked perfectly logical and safe to tell him. It wasn't like he'd fessed up his side of things. How could he expect her to out her pack. Because that was what it was, if she told him that meant questions. That meant he'd wonder if Liam knew, he'd start to ask questions about the kids at the 'school' she stayed at. It was safe and easy from his side but she was a creature of myth. She hadn't believed any of those tales either, not until she'd woken up after a change. Even then it took a while to swallow that pill. How could he expect her to expose herself to him?\

The jab about Mason seemingly came out of nowhere, but after a moment to get his head in gear it dawned on him it might be around the time she'd adopted him. He didn't know the date. Maybe he should have, but that wasn't something that involved him, so, he didn't. He made an exasperated sound very close to a growl and stomped to the bathroom, just across the hall and returned with a small first aid kit. Nothing like she was used to but enough. He dropped the kit on the counter as she bleached the bloodstains.
Fine, knee jerk reaction to protect someone from infection is one thing, but not letting the person you're dating at least know why you're so cagey about things wouldn't hurt you ye know. Not just this Alex, but why you avoid me like the plague for days at a time when you aren't on call, why you go to some boarding school or the station more than you come to me when things get sideways, damnit Alex I'm not telling you to move on I'm telling you you can include me every now and then. I may not have all the gifts you have now, but I know what it is and I can help you. Believe that or not.
West was a quiet man by nature, and true to that, even as frustrated as he was right then, he didn't yell at her per say, but his words were sharp and his face showed his hurt. She'd hid plenty from him, he couldn't help but notice she lived out of town when Mason was around, and continued now that he was gone. He noticed much and said little, letting her live her life and being there to support her whenever he could, and whenever she'd let him. Running a hand sharply through his lengthy black hair he gave a heavy breath as what he said registered on her face.
I know Alex, I've known since the third month we were dating. I'm not asking you to give up anyone, anything, I'm telling you I want to help. I worry sick every month that you'll get killed or caught, and every month I have to watch you go everywhere but here. Your secret is safe with me and you can't hurt me....tell me you haven't noticed. Your sense of smell is heightened and you've been as close to me as skin, so tell me. Am I lying?
He didn't understand the allure of a pack, the stupid loyalty based on fear and structure and age-old tradition that did nothing but get people killed. He hadn't a clue there was even one here, he only knew one, her and if she didn't have someone watching her back and guiding her as she learned who and what she was now, she could wind up hurting someone else, or worse getting herself killed. There were always rogue wolves roaming and looking for easy takes, not to mention human hunters. West's grey eyes were hard and bitter, but his voice had softened toward the end, his concern for her now rivaling the frustrations of having things hidden from him.

/His words hurt, but that was because they were true... mostly. She had finally come to him, he was the first one she came to over Mason and that had hurt a lot of other people in her life... in her pack. She opened her mouth to explain the manor but instead pursed her lips in a thin line in an effort to settle her temper first. She dealt with this at work, a lot. She knew she had to steady her voice before answering. It was how she dealt with the idiot things she heard and handled at work. Not to say he was an idiot but.. situations were similar enough to call for a pause. Of course, in that pause, ignoring the first aid kit for now, knowing her hand was just going to bleed until it was done bleeding and there wasn't a point in wasting gauze she'd have to burn later, West kept going.\
/Her eyes left his as he said he knew, of course she didn't think he meant what she was, not until he went a little further into detail. What? Her throat tightened in panic for a moment. How had she let that slip... how did he even know about them? As he kept talking though, certain things started to fall into place. And when he asked her if she'd noticed... other loose ends suddenly showed their connections. Still unwilling to outright admit anything, Alex looked back up at West.\
The school... Mason went there and so it worked out for me to stay while he was here. Over that time, I volunteered my skills. Kids are kids and they get hurt. Once Mason was gone... I was offered to stay. Besides you, it's the only thing that's steady in my life and I guess I wasn't ready to let go of the one place I had so many memories with him.
/Alex leaned her hip against the counter and bit at her lip. How the hell did he know? Or did he meant something different and she'd out herself and the pack if she said it. Was he fishing? Alex hated to suspect him but something just wasn't right. He smelled of wolf, had small mannerisms like that uncanny little growl he'd just let out and that shaggy hair.. but if he knew, if he understood... how? She somehow knew he wasn't one... it was a gut deep feeling. The again... maybe it was the drugs he knew about.. a few of his comments matched that entirely.. until the bit about the senses... damn. Finally confusion won over in her blue eyes and she shook her head, tensed against a reaction she wasn't sure was coming. No wolf was comfortable outing themselves and Keadek had born into them a particular survival instinct.\
But... the blood.
/Half assed and vague but she was still turning a lot of things over. If he wasn't on to what she was she had a myriad of blood born viruses in her back pocket to fall back on as an excuse.\

Her explanation of the school held water enough, she'd been close to the kid and likely a trained medic was comforting to have on staff with that many children around. Didn't balm any of his wounds that he ranked below a gaggle of kids that couldn't keep out of trouble but, it was what it was. Shaking his head slightly, he responded to her explanation first.
I'd never wish to take that from you, though for the amount of time you spend there it seems there are more good memories there than here....though I'd hope that wasn't the case.
Perhaps that was a bit sharper than it should have been. But he couldn't stop that. Part of a relationship was trust and sharing- she'd asked next to nothing of him in terms of his family, and he thought now it was in efforts to keep questions from coming up about hers. More secrets. Everyone has them, the trick was keeping them from poisoning everything else.
The confusion and apprehension in her eyes hurt the most, he thought. She didn't trust him, and he supposed it was the nature of the beast, his parents had trusted no one and nothing...he should have known the bitten ones would be the same. But still she hid from him. He'd just told her he knew and she still protected-who, herself? Someone else perhaps? Mason was gone, it couldn't be him. He didn't approach her, though part of him wanted to. She clearly didn't want his comfort or support. His brows lifted some before addressing her weak and vague attempt to sidetrack the conversation.
What of it? I was born with the virus in my blood that you only recently contracted. Should have been something, if my father was to be believed. Instead I was an embarrassment, a carrier only and of no value to my own kin. So your blood, it can't hurt me. Now, you wolf out on me during a full moon, you'd probably be able to. But I imagine you already knew that so you've found a place to go. Not that boarding school, too many kids...when are you going to stop avoiding me and let me know who it is I'm dating?

/Alex took a second to take things in. So he knew about her, but from his comments on the school, he had no idea about the pack. Well, that was a relief. The pack was safe. She looked down at her hand and some of the apprehension bled away.\
Well, without knowing you're a carrier... can you really blame me for not telling you? It's not like you came out and told me, and if you already knew about me that just might have helped. How could you expect me to be ready to share that? What I am is something out of tales and nightmares. It's not exactly something you breech over dinner.
/He knew, the bugger knew and all this time he'd carried on as if he didn't. He had her worrying about everything and he knew. What an ass!\
That's pretty rich. You should know damn well just what kind of a risk it is to be what I am? And you're holding that against me? You don't like that I have my own place to live? Why haven't you asked me to move in then? It isn't my house to invite myself into. I'm not telling you where I go and this is definitely not a safe place for me on a moon. I stay away to protect you, and me. We're hunted, we're feared... Dammit West... don't put this all on me.
/He'd just blame her for running again, for pushing him out but she didn't need thing right now. Alex moved past him and to the bedroom, grabbing her backpack and throwing it over her shoulder. She had a needle and thread along with a few other things in the bottom so she could fix her hand in the jeep, if it even needed it. Sometimes she healed faster when she was angry. Alex moved past West and slid her runners on without typing them, letting herself out the door. Just what did he want from her? She'd been spending most of her time at his apartment since Mason had gone. She stayed at his place between shifts, what did he want?! Alex didn't look back over her shoulder and just let herself into the stairwell and headed for the street.\

It was funny that words always hurt worst when they were true. Alex had valid points, this was as much on him as her, but she'd said it herself- this wasn't something that came up over dinner. Her irritation only fanned his and he snorted a derisive laugh. He spoke to her back as she stormed through the apartment, leaving the first aid kit where it was and going to retrieve her own supplies rather than use anything of his, no doubt.
I'd have asked you to move in months ago had I thought you had more than a passing interest in my company- it took you losing your foster child to make staying here even an option! And if I had told you about me, how I knew, you'd react just like you are- denial and loath to believe me. Only thing left to do now is leave.
He regretted the words as soon as they left his mouth but he'd never really been great at thinking ahead of his mouth. She was slamming her feet into her trainers and he'd barely gotten out his next sentence before the door crashed closed in her wake.
I'm not trying to put this on you, but you sure as hell aren't sharing either!
The echo of the door was second only to the roar of his blood in his ears, and his own anger at himself. For not knowing how to effectively handle relationships- to be fair, he hadn't expected to find himself with any other werewolves ever again. His intention had been quite otherwise. Then he goes and starts dating one. It took a while to figure out if she was bitten or born, and he didn't know how she'd take news that he was a reject, essentially, unworthy of trust or affection. So, much like her, he'd hidden what he was afraid she'd reject.Self preservation was a bitch. It kept you safe but often it meant it ruins all kinds of other things.
West let out his frustration with himself and her and everything by striking the counter hard enough that his fist bruised almost immediately, then dragging his undamaged hand through his hair with another growl. He knew that calling her was useless, and certainly not while he was still angry, but he'd call anyway. Later, once his temper had cooled. Why were women so goddamn problematic?!
