She'd hung around long enough to help Alex set up the inevitable ruination of Fresh Meat, then slipped from the bar to take the long way across town. She didn't think there were any tails, but, just in case, she swung by the Pony to kill a little time talking to Jun and gathering her bag. Somehow, most establishments frowned on handguns being brought along, so she'd left it behind the bar and only taken her wallet with her instead. Besides, it gave a little extra time for Jacen to get him, in case he was out. She hadn't warned him she was coming by, as it would have been a bit noticeable, and she was by and large being drug around places by her packmates enough to only have hands enough for drinks and trying to pay Kyle back. The Pony was winding down anyway, so, it meant she and Jun could catch up some since she'd been gone for the past month.
Giving Jun a warm farewell, and throwing one of the coasters at Brila as he tried to glean what she'd been up to on her night out, Bryn made her way to the apartments relatively hassle free. As she made it up to Jacen's door, she rapped on the door in her usual quick and light pattern. She listened for a response before fishing her keys from her bag, in case she'd knocked to an empty apartment. When the lock on the door turned, she ceased her hunting in time for the door to open, and she gave him a genuine smile of surprise and a quiet greeting before waiting for him to let her in. She'd started to act a bit more comfortable with just letting herself into the apartment, like so long ago, but, there were still learned behaviors she had to relearn/forget.

While he knew that Bryn was happier back at home with the pack, Jacen would admit only to himself that he'd preferred the previous arrangement. It was a selfish thought but well, could you blame him? Bryn and Wren were untouchable in the manor and Jacen hadn't made any kind of visit back since the last time he'd been there. Instead he was being good. Tonight, he'd been good in not tailing the fur crew.
The knock at the door was a pleasant surprise and a peek through the keyhole brought a smile to his lips. Jacen unlatched the door and opened it greeting her with the same smile her presence had brought on. Jacen paused for a moment with the door resting against his shoulder before opening it all the way and stepping aside to let her in.
I'm not huge on surprises but when it involves you it seems to work out for me.
He gave her a wink and closed the door behind her, refraining from locking it. He was still trying to be aware of the fact that she hadn't settled quite so easily into the 'old' way of things as he had. He didn't blame her he'd been the one that had messed up, big time. He moved to the kitchen and set the kettle on the stove.
Tea?

While the set-up of the lake house originally had scared her, more in terms of if something went wrong for Wren, it had definitely grown on her. There was still that part of her that had missed the relative peace and quiet that was hardly found in pack life. Though, being home meant she had a lot of her worries she'd had assuaged, so it was a trade off. She couldn't blame Jacen for his partiality- they'd yet to work out a plan for him to see Wren with any frequency. Hopefully that would change soon after tonight's plans were truly set in action and they saw where it landed them in terms of suspicion with the vampires. His comment on surprises earned him a soft laugh, and a begrudged agreement as she walked in and removed her boots.
Things may not be quite back to 'before', but once she was in the apartment, she did relax measurably. Familiarity did that. Leaving her bag with the foot ware, she let him go ahead to the kitchen and instead hopped up to sit on the counter behind him, watching him fetch the kettle before her verbal response with a smile. He knew her, through and through. Though, she'd brought news to deliver and was still pretty firmly in her pest stage of drinking which meant her tone was playful in her response and when he'd turn around to see her perched there, her expression would match it.
Sure- though, I just went through a very dramatic break up and was hoping to find a drink and a shoulder to cry on.
Her humor was always dry, but he'd known her long enough to know by the quirk of her lips if not her tone, that she was playing with him in a way. No one said she had to always be the bearer of bad news, and he could blame the fire hall crew for getting her started in terms of mischievousness. It was a quality she'd always had, but it had been fewer and further between usage in the past year.

Jacen turned to find Bryn perched on the counter and his grin just spread. He moved forward and leaned in toward her, reaching for the cabinet beside her and pulled down a bottle of whiskey.
Is that so? Well then, it’s a good thing that I don’t melt under free running water.
Jacen lifted his free hand to her cheek, thumb gently stroking her cheek as if to clear those threatened tears.
Glass, or it a bottle kind of break up?
His smile was coy and he was more than happy to encourage her mischievous mood. It was a less than common occurrence in the last year and it looked good on her.

His reassurance that he wouldn't be swept away by a torrent of tears earned him a quiet laugh through her smirk. How reassuring. She'd tilted her head some to look up at him, she was almost eye level from her perch on the counter, and she leaned her cheek into his hand as he brushed it. His question as to the volume of 'cure' needed for such a heartbreak was given a momentary pause to consider it before she responded.
Depends on the proof.
She's already pre-gamed so to speak, and while their metabolism usually meant quick work of such content, she didn't need to be encouraged to keep up with that rate. He hadn't leaned any close since fetching the bottle and setting it beside her on the counter so she covered the rest of the distance to bump his nose with hers gently.
A glass might be enough-if I can share it with you.
Her eyebrow quirked some, unable to keep much of a straight face especially now that she didn't have to. She was garbage at flowery words or flirting, that was Jacen's area of expertise. She tended to be subtle like a brick- but she'd picked up a little from having a good teacher. And a patient one.

Always the one to know her stuff, Jacen hadn't taken chances on stocking his apartment with cheap alcohol. While it was lost on him entirely, the taste wasn't and really, most of the time to higher the proof, the better het quality.
His tell tale smirk returned as she brushed his nose and he closed the small remaining distance to reach for a glass, also behind her. He didn't really need to move, but well, he wanted to. He also stole himself a quick kiss as he did so. Loving, affectionate, but not aggressive enough to get him in trouble.
Anything for you.
Jacen didn't bother to step back from there he was standing against Bryn's knees and made quick enough work of the bottle and glass behind her back. Returning the cap to the whiskey and putting back in the cupboard, Jacen produced the glass with the other hand and offered to up to Bryn.
Back to this painful breakup of yours...
He knew that they couldn't keep Riley in the ruse forever. It wasn't fair to the guy and really, Jacen still didn't like the idea of someone else playing daddy to his daughter. Sure he knew they couldn't really come out and say she was his but... that was still better than someone else holding that place, even if it was just for show. Plus, he hadn’t forgotten that they’d talked about a way for Jacen to stay more involved in Wren’s life back when she was out at the cabin. He could only imaging that this had something to do with it or even in the least, it would free Bryn and Riley of their attachment ruse and allow them both more personal freedom.

His smirk was going to get him into trouble faster than his kiss, but it was trouble he'd be able to handle. He was too quick for her to kiss him back, but when he reached behind her again to stow the bottle, she was able to sneak one along his ear lobe before he returned to rest against her knees. Taking the glass from him she nibbled at the amber liquid appreciatively, he'd chosen one of her favorites, by design or luck. Lowering the glass, she delivered the details in an order that would hopefully soften the blow of the one part that wasn't what he'd want to hear.
It /was/ painful, there were people around. Lots of them. But...if enough of them go back home with the bait, then as long as if and when he's asked about her, he claims Wren's his, we can go both have our own lives again.
She could see the displeasure in his eyes at the last part, and before he could vocalize it, she put a finger to his lips to stall him.
/And/, if you think the apartment is safe enough for her to stay here while I'm at work, if I can work it so I'm on days for a few days in a row...and we'll have to bring her over during the day...but, we'd be able to stay with you half the week, depending on my schedule...
It was all she could offer, she could only put in requests for shifts and hope they were honored and if not, that Jun or Brila would be able to switch with her. And it would mean Jacen was going to lose quite a bit of sleep, but, it was something, and if her and Riley were "split" it wouldn't be out of place for her to be keeping to herself and her own schedule. She knew he wasn't going to like that Wren would still nominally be Riley's to everyone else but, it wasn't like she was going to have to call him "daddy" or really spend any more time with him than she did at the manor already. She was fond of him and he was a good 'uncle' to her, so it wouldn't be out of place for anyone on the outside who happened to be watching.

She was right to stall him, because she was also right that he didn't like what she had to imply. Still, it was a far shot from where they'd started and a much better opportunity than he had even a few months ago. He also wouldn't for a second put his wants before his daughter's safety, or Bryn's.
Jacen grumbled deep in his chest but just lipped at her finger instead of responding. She had more to say and he was here to listen. Planting his hands on the counter on either side of her hips he turned over the new information she presented, distantly aware that she'd presented it to him in this way as to distract him. It had worked for the moment.
I'll make sure that the apartment is safe for her, for both of you. If you're willing to bring her here... i'd...
She'd caught him a touch off guard on that one. Yes, he'd ideally love to have them both here, full time but he'd long ago let go of that notion and dead or not he hadn't had the gust to be the one to suggest it. He reached for Bryn's drink and stole a sip before placing it back down on the counter. It still took him a few seconds to put words to the flood of thoughts and emotions and it wasn't lost on him that Bryn seemed terribly amused by all of this.
I'd love that. Whatever time I can get with the two of you.
And with a grin he handed her back the drink and stole another kiss. No reason to let his distraction dampen her mood. He was rather enjoying the prospect of what her mood could bring about.
You expected home tonight?
Or was he lucky enough to get this company for the rest of the night?

She didn't move her finger when he grumbled and merely left it there for him to lip at and otherwise be grumpy. Only when he moved to put his hands on the counter and respond did she let her hand fall to her lap with the other, watching him process what she'd said. He'd almost missed it being grumpy, but, no, there it was. It never failed to amuse her when she managed to throw Mr. Always Collected off. She didn't give him too hard a time though- it was sweet. And she hadn't been able to talk to him or see him all that much since being home, she was glad that when she could she could bring at least a little good news.
Taking back the glass she found herself delayed in taking a drink by a rather charming devil sneaking a kiss. At his next question she quirked a brow slightly over the glass as she took a bit more than a modest drink. Kae had told her it didn't matter how late she stayed out, once Wren was down, she was usually out for the night at least she had been lately. Part of her had suspected the younger girl had been pushing her older sister out of the manor to enjoy a night off as much as she had for having a night where the "middles" could have the house to themselves to stay up late and make questionable choices as to food, drink and amounts of sleep obtained, to say little of all else. Bryn couldn't discount that, to do so would make her a hypocrite considering her youth.
You mean you didn't expect me?
Setting the glass down on the outside of Jacen's arm, she parted her knees to rest on his hips, running her right foot around behind his thigh as she leaned forward.to steal her own kiss. Though this time she wasn't interested in retreating just yet, as she rested a hand to his shoulder. Much like she'd come to accept living a double life most of the time, it only made sense that she had two homes. Her home was where her heart was, and while one half was hopefully (for Kae's sake) asleep at the manor, the other, was right here in front of her.

He really should learn that when she was in this mood, he wasn't winning. Normally he could be the sly one, not tonight. It amused him and he had no trouble taking the heat she was dealing. After all, it came with its benefits.
Jacen just gave a shrug of his shoulders and accepted his terrible fate, hands leaving the counter to slide to her hips, then slide up to her waist. He invited her light weight against his shoulder and was equally in no rush to end the kiss. He hadn't seen her since they'd returned the manor and while they'd made progress he was careful to not push things too far.
When she finally did let him breathe (figuratively of course) he met her tawny eyes with his rich emerald eyes.
I didn't want to get too selfish. I'd love to keep you until after sunrise but if I'm on a time limit I can work with that too.
He knew he was in a safer, clearer part of town as far as the fangs went but he wasn't all too thrilled with the idea of sending her on her way until the sun was good and up. If she'd been out with her packmates before dropping in then Kae likely had Wren and she wasn't on a time limit to get back. As long as Kae wasn't waiting up for her then he'd keep her as long as he could.
As for this being her home, it always had been. He wasn't going to touch that one. It was up to her if she felt comfortable enough to call it that but she still had her key and he wouldn't have it any other way.
Jacen's hands slid from her waist to her hips an then to rub the outside of Bryn's thighs.

She didn't so much let /him/ breath as she had run out, but, the idea was the same. The taste of his kiss had long overpowered that of the whiskey and she far preferred it. When he caught her eyes, she got distracted a moment, but caught enough of what he was saying to understand 'time limits'. She'd double checked with Kae before she'd left, and even had left her a message from when she was killing time at the Pony, so, as far as the manor was concerned, she was accounted for. Keadek wouldn't worry unless she was given worrying news, as part of the 'bigger kids' (she knew they'd always be considered kids by her alpha and she just kind of accepted it), she was given a bit of liberty, as they all were.
Of the two of us, I think /I'm/ the only one with time limits.
Sure he had to avoid the sun, but, in terms of time, he had that in spades, far more than she did. Her lips quirked a little at her tease, and she slid forward to more easily rest her forearms over his shoulders. She was grateful for the alcohol both numbing and loosening the muscles of her shoulders enough that the still healing right one wasn't as stiff as it had been. Or maybe it was and she was just otherwise distracted. Entirely possible.
It had taken time, to start settling back into what had been their normal, to not second guess every little thing. And he'd been as patient as ever, something she didn't think she'd even be able to fully show appreciation for. As his hands settled along the outside of her thighs, she used her closer position to lean into him, her legs from knee to foot now along the length of his own thighs. Despite all misgivings and difficulties they had recently been working to overcome, nothing had altered that her heart seemed to beat fast enough for the both of them as soon as his hands touched her. Running her fingers lightly through the lengthened ends of his hair at the nape of his neck.
I'm yours for as long as you'll have me and for whatever I've got left, remember? We can start with sunup, though, if you want.
Her playful smirk had softened a tad when she said that, but, she'd maintained her banter nonetheless, leaning just close enough to kiss his jawline lightly.

The time he had with Bryn and Wren at the cabin had felt like stolen moments. This... this felt like stolen time, captured and returned to them. Yes, they were parents, yes they'd grown up, been through many things, passed to many tests. But here, right now, they were free of all that.
Her affirmation was a comfort. Yes, he'd known that two years ago but now... It hadn't slipped by him that he may have ruined that forever. And his forever.. really was. That just made each moment all the more important and that meant his focus was entirely on her.
His hands moved down her legs, slipping under her knees and caressing the back of her calves. He kissed her again, light and teasing before trailing kisses up her cheek and to her forehead. He took his hands form her legs and handed her glass back to her with a wink before slipping away from her.
While he hadn't locked the door behind her immediately, now was the time. It wasn't to keep her in, but to keep others out. This was a safe part of town but he still didn't want any unexpected visitors, innocent or otherwise. Once the bolt was flipped Jacen made his way back to Bryn and slid his hands up the outside of her legs again, touching his forehead to hers.
Where were we?
He returned to his place before her and stole himself another sip of their drink.

He was smart in distracting her with the drink as he slipped from her grasp, but she still gave a noise of mild irritation, though the smirk she bore didn't leave. Moving forward just a little more she leaned forward to crane her head around the end of the counter to see what he was up to. She hadn't realized he didn't lock the door behind her. There'd been a time when the sound of a lock behind her too loudly would have triggered a negative reaction, but...time changed things. Time had changed them, too. Some of it for the better, like Wren, other things.... The thought had been plaguing her off and on and she put it away by distracting herself with a drink before Jacen made himself a perfect distraction. With his forehead against hers, she was able to rub her nose along his briefly with a small smile before he withdrew to coyly ask where they were and sip from their shared drink.
For all the things that had changed in their lives over the last couple of years, that familiarity hadn't, and what brief gnawing thought had threatened her mood was easily pushed aside in favor of far more engaging things. She'd moved forward just enough that now the insides of her knees and lower thigh sat easily at his hips, and in answer to his question, she moved to use her heels to gently tug him closer to her and the counter, neatly snagging the glass from his hand as she did so. Setting the almost empty glass on the counter, she put her hands to his chest, running them up to his shoulders.
We'd determined that you get to keep me til at least sunrise....maybe even longer as I don't work tomorrow.
She'd anticipated a long night even before her and Riley had managed to pull off their falling out, the firehall crew typically burned the midnight oil well past that and had planned accordingly. That meant she wouldn't get a chance to work on her schedule with her boss until she worked next unless she swung by before she went back to the manor tomorrow. Which she wasn't inclined to, because once she was there, she could always be dug into working a shift. No....she had better plans for her daylight hours tomorrow. But for now, her only plans were to draw herself closer to Jacen, kissing him slowly at first, but as his intensity increased it led her to take his lip between her teeth gently.

Jacen was more than happy to pick up right where he'd left off and he easily let himself be pulled in, hands sliding back up her legs, over her ass and to her lower back with a firm, wanting touch.
Hm, maybe I can get a little selfish then.
She shut him up after that, and he returned her advances with a growing enthusiasm. He might be dead but he was still male and he'd missed her... terribly. Slipping his thumbs over her hips, his hands slid under the hem of her shirt and rubbed at her lower back. A soft rumble of laughter escaped him as she bit at his lip.
And they say /we/ bite.
At that Jacen pulled her ever closer, taking her weight against his chest as he set his lips to hers, one hand sliding to the back of her neck to cradle her head as he kissed her deeply. Yes, time had changed things for them, many things. Perhaps one day their differing view on time and its effects would come to light but right now, he knew it had been far too long since he'd had time like this with her and he planned to make the most of it, all night long.
Wrapping his arm around her back he pulled her clear of her counter and held her against his chest, still kissing her.

It was the longing in that touch that mirrored her own as her arms slipped around his neck, more than the coolness of his hands that caused her to shiver slightly against him as he pulled her closer. Her legs had wound around his hips firmly but as he pulled her first against his chest and then from the counter she let them slide down his until she stood, on her toes due to her arms still being around his neck at the wrist, He may not need to breath but she still did, and as she broke the kiss to do so, he rested her head back against his hand. Looking up with a slightly mischievous twitch of her eyebrow she was able to respond.
Who do you think I learned it from?
She'd spent so much of their time apart convinced, and encouraged, to push him as far from her mind as possible, that when they'd started talking again she'd struggled with how much she felt his absence and how she was 'supposed' to ignore it. Most of that they'd worked through by now, thankfully, but there were always things that would resurface, like all buried things do. But, at least now they could deal with them together.
She ran her hands along his neck and down his chest lightly as she lowered down from the balls of her feet, just to slip them under his shirt and run them just as lightly, but with certainty over his abdomen, ribs, and then encouraged him to lift his arms so she could remove his shirt. While she wasn't tall enough to reach his lips without some assistance, she could do due diligence to his collarbone and the hollow of his neck.
Her confidence and surety wavered slightly, though, as the hand he had under her shirt and along her back slid forward and over her own stomach. When his fingers traced over the thin, but corded ridge of the scar that spanned from her side most of the way across her pelvis she drew a soft, sharp breath and instinctively flinched, slightly, even though it didn't cause her any pain anymore. Liam had done his best to cut such that it would heal right, but, he and Alex had had five to ten minutes during a helter skelter bus ride to the hospital to work in, then it was up to the surgeons, who knew nothing of the necessity of cleansing wounds of silver. It had taken forever to heal, and after a few checkups, it became obvious (to her and Keadek at least) that at least one of the surgeons did know about the silver, and had just decided to use it to cover more invasive damages.
She'd lived with them for so long now, she rarely thought of them, but her subconscious was anxious that Jacen wouldn't have seen it before. Not that scars weren't a part of their lives, but being this close to him, it was acutely apparent that while time had changed them both in many ways, it was her body that had changed, significantly, especially compared to someone who hadn't, and never would. And while Bryn hadn't thought it had been on her mind, apparently it had been.
