CinemaBlend has put together a list of twelve films they feel have killed a potential franchise, do you agree or disagree with the list? If so why?

The Unlucky 12:

  1. King Arthur: Legend of The Sword
  2. Dracula Untold
  3. John Carter
  4. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
  5. Ender's Game
  6. Super Mario Bros.
  7. The Golden Compass
  8. Beautiful Creatures
  9. Van Helsing
  10. Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events
  11. The Lone Ranger
  12. The Wolfman

Click to see the list and their reasoning behind each choice.

Would you add anything to this list? If so, what and why?

I actually really liked John Carter & Ender's Game! I don't think they ruined the franchise at all. After seeing John Carter, I was even inspired to try to find the books to read also, specifically because it was written a little over 100 years ago! I remember being really interested but I never got the books. :oy:

I hadn't read the book behind Ender's Game either, before seeing the movie, but it's one of my favorites. I really liked how they did it.

This is why I never listen to movie critics also. They can't predict what everyone will like.

Ender's Game was horrible. They butchered a science fiction classic. Ender's Game is actually one of the pioneer science fiction novels written Orson Scott Card that inspired a love in science fiction along with Dune by Frank Herbert and Battlefield Earth by L. Ron Hubbard (it's actually one of the few novels I've read at least three times). There were so many flaws in the overall translation from book to movie that it scared off a lot of diehard fans.

Van Helsing was a great movie and I can agree, I don't see how they couldn't expand upon the series.

I can't believe they don't have Eragon on this list! They butchered the translation to where sequels weren't even plausible. I mean they literally removed two of the pivotal characters in the story later on from even making an appearance on the screen.

Okay, then I guess it should read more like "12 Movies that Killed a Franchise for the Book Lovers." Maybe if I'd read the book before, I could agree with you, but having been ignorant of the differences from the book, it didn't ruin the movie for me.

is it just me or are most of these movies heavy on the cg? perhaps that's what screwed the franchise.

I still enjoyed Dracula Untold despite how people felt about it. It sure was better than Dracula 3, the sequel to Dracula 2000.

True! I don't like movies that heavily rely on CGI. It really does ruin the whole experience for me, like it's hard to really dive into whatever story people are trying to tell. I get too distracted tbh
