Justin Marsham v. The Jackal

Scene One: Ultimate Cage Fighting Duel II!

”Welcome back fans to another exciting edition of CZW After Hours. I am Jarred Daniels and I’m sitting beside my co-host, William Masters. CZW has been swarmed with questions since the last episode of Overdrive. Looks like Next Generation is growing in numbers and in strength, The Jackal has exposed Jesse Montana as the liar he is and we have seen the return of TJ Hix to in-ring action. Honestly, this has been one heck of a week.”

Both Daniels and Masters wear suits and are seated behind a large table. CZW logos float across the walls behind them – evidence of an obvious blue screen. The commentators act as though they are out at ringside, commenting on a match. The same demeanors and tones are held in their presence and voice.

Masters nods. ”I’d have to agree; and to really capture the raw and awesome nature of everything that has occurred, I’d like to start this show off by talking about one of my new favorite CZW competitors. He’s proven himself to me, especially after his match last week and has shown the world why he is the current Intercontinental Champion.”

”Oh God,” Daniels mutters.

”Justin Marsham has taken to CZW like a wild-fire. Since his arrival, he has done everything right. He has carved a path through his opponents, left broken bodies in his wake and dominated in-ring action with his technically sound style. Correct me if I’m wrong, but he has only two losses in singles competition and is the current Intercontinental Champion.”

Daniels shakes his head. ”No, you’re right. He is a great wrestler, but the way he acts makes him despicable. You want a great wrestler? Ace King! Ace King is amazing in and out of the ring. Marsham has too much ego. Plus, honor means nothing to him. He cheats. He lies. He deceives. ”

”Ego? That’s confidence. So what if he is vocal about it?”

”Are you serious?”[/i] questions Daniels.

”—and what is this nonsense about cheating, lying and deceiving? Marsham does whatever it takes to win a match. Everyone here in this company does. It’s called mind games, Jarred.”

Daniels shakes his head once again and reveals, ”Well, it’s good that you brought him up because it looks like we have a promotional video to show about The Epitome of Technical Finesse. I guess he has a few things to say about his match this week when he faces Karl Jackson, better known as The Jackal.”

Words lead fans into a brief sequence of video – all portraying Marsham dominating his opponents. Various clips of him executing The Assassination DDT are shown as he performs the maneuver from several different positions – both as offensive and defensive counters. Close-ups are unveiled of him as he cinches in The Executioner’s Song, shifting his weight to apply as much pressure as possible unto his opponents.

When the video sequence concludes, Marsham’s dastardly countenance is unleashed unto the audience. He grins and accepts the fans’ rejection as boos flood the arena. This promotional spot had been filmed a day earlier at a local house show for Xtreme Cage Fighting in Seattle, Washington. Marsham’s contract with CZW prevented him from participating in the event; however, he did make an appearance much to the chagrin of the fans.

Clothed in black, Marsham’s championship belt is the only instance of color. Black slacks combine with a black long-sleeved shirt. A pair of black Rayban sunglasses rest upon the crown of his head, pulled back and held in place by his random locks of hair. He stands with perfect posture and pride, preparing for the signal to start the segment.

Only now does this video grace CZW television. The World Wide Web had been discussing this appearance for days. Though Marsham may have made an appearance at a non-CZW show, it is quite definite that he had all intentions of promoting Overdrive. In fact, this CZW promotional stint was a success. Finally, everyone would see what all the hype was about.

”Here I am – standing in the backstage area of an XCF event – and I cannot help but think of what awaits me at Overdrive. I cannot even enjoy the show because my worries are running way too thick. So, that is why I have requested this time to alleviate some frustration off of my chest. I need to do this now and there are no CZW cameras around; and so I have no other option than to address this through XCF Television,” reveals a now apparently distraught Justin Marsham.

The camera zooms out from the extreme close-up of his face. Over his left shoulder, Marsham has proudly slung the CZW Intercontinental Championship. The belt appears to glow while it rests against his shoulder, partially concealing his chest beneath it. To either of his side, Marsham’s Entourage can be spied: Solomon Black, Reva Douglas and Danny Spade.

”—as most of you know, I am scheduled to face one of CZW’s most dangerous men this week. He, like me, is a phenomenal tactical wrestler. He, like me, can be listed among those who have held the Intercontinental Championship. But, he – unlike me – is in a world of trouble. Listen, I’ll just speak straight to you Karl. You and me – we could put on an awesome show. Hell, we would be the highlight of the night and you damn well know that’s the truth. You also know that I am on a mission to prove that I am the best CZW Intercontinental Champion that this company has ever had; and to do that, I must beat all of its former owners. You are next on that list.”

One loud breath is taken – forced from his lungs no different than a heavy sigh. He speaks as if he is standing in front of The Jackal. He has nothing to hide and wishes to speak frankly. Marsham does just that.

”—but I must point something out. With your actions against Jesse Montana as of recent, I cannot help but believe that he has something planned for you at Overdrive. You know it. You cannot deny that! It wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if you were attacked backstage, struck with another car or whatever! Something bad is bound to happen to you,” Marsham explains, ”—and seriously, putting aside all of my ego and everything else, I don’t think that it would be best for you to compete this week. I know. I know exactly how that sounds. I’m just trying to get an easy win or some other type of bullsh*t! Honestly, it comes down to me being selfish. You see, I want to prove I’m the best by beating the best; and, Karl, you are the best. But, I also don’t want my victory tainted in the slightest.”

Marsham seems genuine. Oddly enough, he also makes sense to a lot of people. The Jackal is bound to have something done to him by Montana and his crew, especially after last week. While it appears Marsham wants to get free from his fight with Jackson, Marsham does not. He makes it abundantly clear that he wants to face The Jackal.

”Think about it, Karl. Would you be surprised if Montana just ignored you the entire night and did not try to hurt you in the slightest? Montana’s a manipulative bastard. If he isn’t one to do it, I’m just he’d get one of his sexually deprived cronies to do it for him. You should know how he operates considering you were at his side for that short while! So, what I’m suggesting is that we go down to that ring and shake hands – agree to a draw – and plan out a date where we can face each other, sometime after your problems with that jackass Montana have worked themselves out. I’m not asking for a cancellation of our match, but a postponement. I want you at your best. I don’t need you looking over your shoulders or – for that matter – being beat to Hell before our match. You know Montana’s a coward. Of course, he’ll attack when you least expect it. So, instead of having me to focus on this week, you can conserve your energy and channel it upon Montana. Then, make that son-of-a-bitch tap out!”

The proposal has been issued and Marsham nods. It does not look like Marsham is trying to back out of his match, but simply reschedule it for a later date so that he knows The Jackal will be fresh. Most people are caught off guard by this considering Marsham should want Jackson weakened before their match, so he is an easy victory. An easy victory is still a victory nonetheless. But, Marsham’s ego may have got the best of him and clouded his decision.

His final words are spoken, ”Think about it.”

The promotional video concludes and CZW returns the broadcast table where both Overdrive commentators are seated. Masters is the first to welcome fans back, chiming in with his sardonic humor.

”If I were The Jackal, I wouldn’t think about it too hard. Thinking is what got The Jackal almost killed. If I were him, I would take the deal. Marsham’s likely to beat the Hell out of him no matter when or where he fights, so at least it’ll postpone his eventual execution.”[/i]

Daniels shakes his head. ”I’m honestly having a hard time believing Marsham doesn’t have something else planned. Why the Hell would he want to face a healthy Karl Jackson? That’s like asking someone to point a loaded shotgun directly in your face and pull the trigger – it’s likely to get your face messed up!”

”Is that some kind of joke to make about Marsham’s face? You know he still has to wear that nose guard because of O’Toole!”

”There’s just something fishy about it. Come’on! Do you really think Marsham is so worried about The Jackal’s well being that he could not wait to make a statement until he acquired a CZW camera? He had to make the statement from some other promotion’s back room? I just can’t believe it.”

”You can’t or you won’t?”

Daniels groans. ”I’m serious.”

”Ha! I’ll bet you are. You know what though? I’m serious about something as well. I’m getting word that we’re about to have ourselves a guest—no guests—here on CZW After Hours. Please welcome CZW’s own Epitome of Technical Finesse, Justin Marsham!”

Once more – The Epitome of Technical Finesse graces CZW television. He carries with him the belt and is followed by his Entourage. Daniels cannot help but shake his head in disbelief. The last thing he wanted to deal with tonight is the egotistical Marsham. But, what else would he want to say? Is he going to beg Jackson to accept the deal? Is he going to get on his knees and plead? That’s about all he could really do at this point.

”Well, it looks to me like we’re also being joined by CZW valet, Reva Douglas; CZW agent and columnist, Solomon Black; and CZW ring official, Danny Spade. I’m quite intrigued as to what has brought you to After Hours tonight. We just heard what you had to say to Karl Jackson. Is there anything that you’d like to elaborate on?” inquires Masters.

Marsham smirks. ”I’m not out here to talk about The Jackal. He knows where I stand. I’m here to talk about something else. But, before I get to that, my agent has something that he’d like to say.”

Upon being cued, Solomon speaks up. His focus shifts directly to Jarred Daniels. ”All that I have to say is, Jarred – you need to know what the Hell you are talking about before you open that mouth of yours and start flapping those gums. All you ever do is bad mouth my client and other top reigning CZW stars. You belittle those who are better than you while take the sides of the old, washed up, and pathetic CZW stars. Hell, calling them stars is even a stretch. Why do you do that? Is it because you are jealous of people like my client? Do you feel a connection with the washed up, pathetic performers like Brian Kirkland and Mike Monroe?”

”I’d ask you the same thing! Why do you feel it necessary to defend your client rather than teach him a thing called morals? questions Jarred.

Solomon rolls his eyes. ”Thank you. That answers my question. You are pathetic.”

”What?!” shouts Jarred.

Directing his attention to Masters, Solomon remarks, ”I don’t know how you can sit there beside his ignorant ass all the time.”

”Well, the job pays well. He is the bane of my existence though,” Masters laughs.

All attention is redirected to Marsham when Solomon concludes and The Epitome of Technical Finesse looks to reveal why he is on the show. He stands to the side of the table, separating the aggressive Solomon Black from the aggravated Jarred Daniels. Self-appreciation glows from Marsham’s countenance as he begins to speak. He does not speak as calmly as he had earlier and an undeniable ferocity has saturated his words.

”I’m not here to talk about this week’s Overdrive. Instead, I’m here to discuss the little mishap that happened at Overdrive this past week. If anyone does not remember, allow me to remind you all. I faced Mike Monroe this past week in what was Monroe’s last ditch effort to make a name for himself before fading away back into obscurity. He managed to get some good licks in on me, but it takes more than just a few to get to the center of this tootsie pop. You see, I was determined to help Monroe. It became obvious to me about half way through the match that he did not remember who he was. I was going to remind him.”

”—and what a fine job you did!” declares Masters – sucking up the Intercontinental Champion.

”Thanks, but before Monroe truly got a glimpse of that truth—of that enlightenment—some damn idiot decided to bum rush me. Hell, I thought it was a fan at first, but when I realized it was El Pablo I couldn’t help but wonder what the Hell is going on in his head. It was either one of two things. He was either coming out to save Monroe or he was trying to finagle his way into a match for my Intercontinental Championship. I figured the later was more plausible considering Monroe is a piece of trash and why would El Pablo have wanted to save him? That would be like me throwing away a used condom wrapper and El Pablo getting pissed, digging it out of the can, and putting it back on the counter. So, it has to be because he wants a shot at my title.”

Marsham’s paranoia now peeks its ugly head as he clutches the title belt against his frame. Daniels can be seen in the corner of the screen shaking his head in disbelief.

”So, that is why I am here tonight. I’m here to make a declaration to the Five Star Superstar. I honestly don’t know if you think you deserve a shot at me or your just that damn stupid, but you had absolutely no place in my match last week against Mike Monroe. I don’t care if you and XTC have accepted him into your ranks—if you knew what was best for you, you’d keep your distance and heed only things that directly concern you. You see, next time, Mr. Pablo, I’m not going to be so caring and just leave you be. Next time, Mr. Pablo, you’ll make it personal.”

”Thank you for your time, Masters,” thanks Solomon, ”—and Daniels, I’ll send you the wanted ads. Don’t worry, I’ll make sure I’ll circle the suitable jobs for you.”

Now, Marsham and his Entourage depart, leaving Masters and Daniels to lead the folks to commercial. Unique about Marsham is the way he has surrounded himself with people of value. The Entourage exists as a stable, no doubt, but it is one composed of non-wrestling talent. Solomon wields the money, Reva has devoted herself to Marsham’s valet services, and Spade is a referee. What else could Marsham ask for?

”Well, looks like you just had your ass handed to you Jarred,” Masters remarks.

”Solomon is pompous. He’s been taking shots at me for a while in his columns. I’m not in the least bit surprised he did here.”

”He does have a point though. You do take sides with the lesser privileged. If only you could see the world as I see it!”

Jarred smirks. ”I’ll never be that deranged, William. Well, folks, looks like we have to go visit our sponsors. But, when we return, we’ll review the feud developing between Godzilla Sawyer and Kris Kamikaze.”

To see more developments on the Marsham-Jackson story, fans are asked to tune in to Overdrive this coming weekend.

Stay tuned.
