“I don't need you. I DON'T NEED ANYONE.” The slow, soothing intro of the song “So Strange I Remember You” by Thrice plays as the scene fades into focus. Trees blur by, and the roaring of the train’s wheels can be heard, the noise noticeable as a droning rhythm. Eddie sits against the window, wearing the ear buds of his iPod. From his reflection in the glass, he looks very clean-cut today, his face shaven and his hair styled neatly. All of that does little to distract from the patch that covers his right eye, a lingering injury sustained two weeks prior at the hands of ‘the Sadistic Solution,’ Alan Fiscus. -So strange I remember you in protest of a prayer, and falling back from seas we fear to sail. I swear I saw the shooter, gold teeth and a double dare, Postmodern warnings seem inclined to fail. Feigning an apology. Those words they never left your lips. Those 5 years in Bermuda slide by like the lights of passing ships. So strange that I remember you, knee-deep in Nietzsche's lies. My throat was an open grave I drank your stained glass eyes.- If he suffers from this recent betrayal, then he doesn’t seem to be showing any sign of it. He regards the passing wilderness with interest, watching the evergreens of Washington flash by. -And they taste like dead cathedrals that are crumbling beneath a weight, ten thousand jaded tourists who've traded in their hearts and hands for disposable cameras, set to document decay. Set to capture just enough of life to catalogue the things we throw away. (...breathing the fumes of our machines...) We've lost our way. (...breathing through television dreams...)- “I’ve always loved this song, but I think I’ve only recently discovered its meaning. It’s meaning to me, anyway. We all know songs can mean different things to different people. That’s the beauty of music.” He leans his head sideways against the window, closing his eye, his voice in this voiced-over monologue contemplative. “I would say that it represents, in a broader sense, the fear of being something more, and being so wound up in material obsessions that humanity no longer matters. Remind you of anyone?” Again, the words seem to echo out. “I don’t need you. I DON’T NEED ANYONE!” Lightning-fast, a series of stills flash by. Candid and event pictures of six well-known individuals in the CZW. Covey. Maynard. McNally. Fiscus. Rowan. Nasty. Various photos of WDS in their element in the ring, as well as hanging out in their down time. Dozens of images or more flash by, each one that appears shows up faster than the one before it and disappears even more quickly, until the images that blur by are unrecognizable. The images vanish all together in a flash, and in that split second, we cut back to Eddie just as his eye opens. -If we could only see us now. If we could only see us now. The words of the dead ring in our ears, but it’s only a lie. The voice in your head brings you to tears, but you don't know why. The words of the dead ring in our ears, but it’s only a lie. The voice in your head brings you to tears, but it’s only a lie, yes, it’s only a lie, ...isn't it?- “My friend turned on me because he said it inevitable. That if he didn’t, then I would. I disagree, but it’s only my word against his, so I can’t exactly argue. What I will argue is the garbage mentality that Alan and Covey share. That trust is a weakness. That compassion is a weakness. That love…is a weakness. I could sit here and argue the point all day if I wanted, but everyone knows that would get boring real fast. Instead, I’ll just put it in words you can understand. Ask Matt Covey how weak I am.” A blur of footage from the riot match at Pandemonium flashes past. -Eddie dropkicks the ring-steps into Covey’s face just before Covey can use them as a weapon.- -He leaps from one turnbuckle to the other, kicking a trashcan into ‘Bad Ass’ Matt Covey’s face.- -At the culmination, Rowan hits the ‘St. Edward’s Fall’ on ‘Bad Ass’ for the win.- “Ask TJ Hix how weak I am.” A similar barrage of footage plays, this time from last week on Overdrive. -Eddie is shown on the second turnbuckle, hammering Hix in the face repeatedly with right hands.- -TJ staggers towards Eddie who quickly snatches him up, lifting and then driving him to the mat with a sit-out powerbomb.- -Hix’s head ricochets off the exposed turnbuckle courtesy of Eddie, the blood running down TJ’s forehead signaling the end of the contest.- “The way I see it, it’s just a convenient excuse to disguise the real issues. YOUR issues. But that’s fine. Regardless of what has or will happen, I’ll continue to be who I am, and you’ll continue to try to be who you think you are. Whatever happens, happens. One thing you did teach me was that you need to take care of yourself first and foremost. I don’t disagree with you, but some people take it too far. Looking out for yourself doesn’t mean you have to sabotage everyone else along the way. It doesn’t mean you have to let your humanity die, only to linger on in photographs and distant memory. You want to talk about weak? Let’s take someone who cuts themselves away from everything that separates us from the animals because he can’t handle being human. THAT is weak.” He slowly passes a hand over his wounded eye, his thoughts seeming to drift inward for a moment. Eventually, he returns his gaze to the passing trees. “As we head towards Summer Showdown, a few things are really brought into perspective. For instance, this recent show here in my home-state marked the anniversary of my first year with this company. In that span I’ve climbed through the ranks, raised the bar in terms of title-reigns, and put on some of the most memorable contests in the history of the company. I’m no longer the new blood. I’m one of a few veterans left. Where those who have constantly betrayed their friends have faded away and moved on, I’ve remained. Last year, Summer Showdown was my second match with the company, and I was literally three seconds away from walking out with a title. Fast-forward 365 days and I’ll be in a match that will be just as insane, and just as unpredictable. It doesn’t matter which match we end up in, Alan and I will steal the show. Because, let’s face it, this little drama that is unfolding is headline news, one of the biggest stories of betrayal that this organization has ever seen. I’ll admit that I’d love it, if it wasn’t happening to me.” Our view slowly pans to the other side of his face, the right side, focusing on the eye patch that covers his face. “But, first things first. Colorado Springs will see an epic main event featuring three of CZW’s top stars, and TJ Hix. Apparently the upper brass in the back decided that Bruce didn’t get enough of his comeuppance last week, so they’re throwing him to the wolves in Colorado. If there’s one thing I admire about ‘the Boss’ it’s probably not true. This guy spent weeks attacking me from behind, but I showed him and everyone else in the world exactly how different things became once we were face-to-face. Like so many others who waltz into this company, Hix doesn’t feel he needs to pay his dues. He feels he deserves to have the spotlight, but, just like everyone else, he’ll just have to learn that lesson the hard way. It doesn’t matter where you’ve been or what you’ve done while you’re there, it only matters how you can stand up to the talent where we are now. And you’re stepping in with three of the best this place has to offer. Ace King is the world champion and Alan Fiscus is like a sadistic machine. Then there’s me. The Clown, the Killer, the Saint. You probably think you met the Killer back in Spokane, but you couldn’t be more wrong, Bruce. I’m looking forward to showing you just what I mean this Overdrive.” A pair of young kids come bustling down the aisle way, having a play Star Wars duel with toy lightsabers. Eddie watches them quietly for a moment, grinning at their antics, the level of corniness apparently lost on them. “RARGH! The emperor has corrupted you!!” “Join us or die!! Bweoowwwsh!!” “ZZzzzzzzt! DON’T MAKE ME DO THIS!!” “YOU’RE ALREADY DOING IT!!” He turns his head and chuckles to himself as the children continue their little battle, the voice-over once again resuming. “And speaking of Ace, I’m pretty sure things got a little crazy in that brawl last week and we ended up trading a couple punches along with the other guys, despite the fact that we were partners the week before. First, thanks for having my back, Ace, I appreciate it. Secondly, I’m sure there are no hard feelings given the position that we all find ourselves in. We’ve got our own dramas running their course, but the fact of the matter is, you have what everyone wants in that CZW World Heavyweight Title. Funny, I remember a time when I didn’t even want the thing. Call it a competitive spark that I’ve found since I first took my shot for the gold, but right now I have to admit that nothing would make me happier than taking that strap from you. I’ve been close…so close on two occasions, one of which you personally saw to. Again, there are no hard feelings, it’s just the nature of the competition. But, don’t let the respect I have for you make you think for one second that I still won’t take a shot at that title in a heartbeat. I don’t care when or where, but I do know that I WILL get another shot. And should I fail again, it’s wash, rinse, repeat. I’ll find that gold around my waist, some day. As for this week? Good luck, Acey. I have a feeling that once the four of us load into the ring, it’s going to be like a frickin’ blender in there.” The car goes black as the train rushes into a tunnel. Moments later, light once again floods the car, but Eddie is nowhere to be seen. Suddenly, the camera is whirled around, facing the other direction, looking into Eddie’s grinning face, a flicker of mischief in his one good eye. At this point, he really doesn’t need to say anything, but does so anyway, likely because everyone is expecting it. “Bouche.” Slowly, the scene fades out, the rolling sound of the train’s wheels lingering for a few moments longer before silence takes the air. |
