Interstate 5 North

As the landscape went by in the background, Shawn Duncan sat in the passenger seat of the 2001 Toyota and read the facts sheet he had acquired online. It was from CZW's own roster page. He had read the material several times before, but Duncan wanted to be sure he was ready for this.

'6' 2", not overly tall, but might as well be when I'm only 5' 8". Outweighs me by 120 lbs! Obviously a power wrestler but has a surprising amount of submission and tear down holds in his arsenal. A lot like that Bad Boy Brawler, only good enough to wrestle for a major promotion. If I couldn't beat brawler, what is my chance at beating this guy?

Still, maybe I shouldn't be looking at this as a win-lose situation. No matter what happens, I win in the long run unless I get hurt. I'll be wrestling in front of an audience 10 times the size of anything I've ever fought for. Even if I lose, I should learn a lot from Mountain Man and it will get my first time in a crowd like that out of the way. And who knows? My agility and gymnastics training takes my opponents by surprise sometimes, particularly some of my unique moves. I know I'm already good, but I have a long way to go. Can't believe I'm getting this nervous, and I'm still in Oregon.'

"Dad," Shawn asks his father, who is driving, "I know Mom is against this and I know that you aren't going to stop me, but do you approve of what I'm doing? I mean, how do you feel?"

The older man next to him kept his eyes on the road but smiled a bit.

"Well, your Mother doesn't understand the draw of Professional Wrestling," the man began, "and while I don't really watch often anymore, I used to watch it all the time. Back in the 80's and 90's, Hulkamania and all that. I used to fantasize about being in the ring. But besides that, you know I was in the military. What you may not know, because you weren't there or very young, is that I graduated high school in June and was in Basic Training by the end of July. I was only 18 when I joined and celebrated my birthday during Desert Storm. I was still in when I met and married your Mother and when you were born, although I left the service shortly thereafter.

"What it come down to is that, I know what your doing is a bit dangerous, especially with this Combat Zone, but I can't say much when I was shooting rifles and throwing grenades when I was less than a year older than you are now. As Jesse used to say, close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. (chuckles at his own bad joke) I know you were disappointed when you realized you would never be good enough at gymnastics to be picked up for sports scholarships. If this is a way for you to make a name for yourself, to enjoy yourself while you are young, then I'm not going to stand in your way. At this point, I have to trust that I've raised you right, trust your judgement, and give you any advice I have when you want it...and sometimes when you don't. You have a chance that most people don't get, and at a young age. You'll get to travel and perform. As long as you don't miss too much school next year and your grades don't suffer, I'll support you in this."

Shawn felt a little better as they approached Portland Airport. Shawn sat back.

'First time on a plane,' he thought, 'and first time across country. This is going to be so awesome!'
