So many people. So many lights. So many things going through his head. The fact he had lost to The Mountain Man in his first televised match barely registered in his mind. Of course he was disappointed, but even now, an hour after the match, the adrenalin still surged through his veins every time he thought about his entrance. The audience wasn't behind him too much yet, but they still cheered during some of his moves and later pin attempts. Shawn Duncan could really get used to that. **** "We'll have to work on your image and style a bit," Johnny Rotted told him at CZW Headquarters the next day. He would be here for half the day getting things together with Johnny helping to walk him through the process. "I did have a question, Johnny," Shawn said tentatively, not wanting to make waves, "What was that music that played during my entrance?" "I don't even know," Rotted replied nonchalantly, "We asked you several times about music and you never gave us something. That was some generic dance crap we had in our files. If you tell us what you want played, we'll make it happen." "And what do you feel needs to be done about my image?" "Well, you really don't have one," Rotted explained, "I mean, we don't have too many outright gimmicks around here. You might see an evil clown or something, but it is still for intimidation. You don't see guys dressed as doctors, police men, fire fighter, or racial stereotypes often in CZW. Your problem right now is, no one really knows how to relate to you. Do we push your gymnastics background or just let you use it for flashy moves? How should you dress during interviews? If you look closely, no matter who they are or how much they are loved or hated, almost every long-term successful CZW superstar brought something out in front of the cameras that is different and unique. I've seen you wrestle several times now and you've worn different clothing every time. You don't know what music you want or how to present yourself. Simply put, everytime you get in front of the camera, you have to give the audience a reason to tune in every week, to come to our shows. We've had perpetual match losers that still brought people in the door." Shawn frowns, shaking his head. "I've heard some of this before, but only for a small audience in my home town." Johnny smiles and says: "Well, that is what I'm here for. What we are going to do is look into some possible images for you. I won't call them gimmicks, because I still don't want the 'evil businessman' or 'Great American Patriot'. The best wrestlers just exaggerate their own personalities anyway. We just have to bring out the parts of you that are exciting, the parts that nearly got you the gymnastics scholarship and brought you into pro-wrestling in the first place. I know you will probably be nervous at first, but you'll catch on fast. When you get in the ring and do what you do, you don't really look like a green rookie. You aren't polished, but you are a natural talent. We catch your personality and on-camera skills to match that talent, you could be hot." Johnny's words remind Shawn of the show, the audience reaction, and his own excitement. 'If I can take my excitement and transmit that to the viewers..." ********* The song. It was causing him some grief. He spent some time on Youtube looking up songs he knew and some songs he didn't. Many of them were older. He wanted it to fit his style (though that was still developing) and knew it had to be instantly recognizable, immediately different from that of any other CZW worker. He went through a small list: In the Air Tonight: Phil Collins: More of an intimidating song and starts slow. Not a good choice. Michael Jackson's Bad: No, Shawn couldn't carry that one. Not at this stage. And using that at this time would seem strange. Fight for your Right, Beastie Boys: No, he really didn't want a party-boy image. 'Let's see, songs about air, flying, impact...' Then he found it. Yeah, it might be a bit of a cliche, but it had everything he wanted. It starts with a good riff, has a harder rock sound with a futuristic techno beat, and speaks about flight. Even mentions a word that can directly relate to the ending of a match... ***** We see a short montage to the song "The Final Countdown" by Europe and centering on some of Awesome Shawn Duncan's more impressive flying and gymnastic moves from both matches in and before CZW. As the montage ends, the video fades to a shot of Duncan in his wrestling gear. During his statement Awesome Shawn is constantly moving, either his hands, head, or even pacing back and forth at times. "Combat Zone Wrestling! Three weeks ago, I was wrestling in a small promotion in Oregon and now...now I'm here, a place where legend have been made! I don't know if I can put my name up with those legends, but I'm going to do everything I can to make it happen! You've all seen a small taste of what Awesome Shawn can do, but one short match and one incomplete one does not even begin to reveal my skills. If I can do what I can do now, I can't wait to see where I will be by this time next year! This week on Overdrive I'll be having a rematch with The Mountain Man with the added difficulty of a third man, Tommy Sixx. Its hard to imagine three guys of a more different ring style. Now I'm not going to stand here and rant and rave about how I'll beat them both within an inch of their lives, how I'm going to dominate and destroy them. With the fact that Mountain Man pinned me a few days ago, that would be terribly arrogant. But I've always wondered why so many guys are so in love with their own voices that they will brag about what they have yet to do. No, what I need to do is shake off the nervousness of my first big match and put everything I have into this. Mountain Man is definitely bigger and stronger than me, and I'll admit my surprise when he took some of my good moves and stood back up. Tommy Sixx is a little bigger than me and has an array of hard-hitting assault tactics that he obviously knows very well. My biggest assets are that I'm the fastest one in the ring, can perform some acrobatic feats that the other two can't predict, and that they simply haven't seen much of me and can't know what to expect. Tommy Sixx, Mountain Man, I haven't been here long enough to have any hard feelings toward anyone or even have opinions about you guys, your character and personalities. I just have something to prove, that I belong here with the likes of El Pablo, Krimson Blaze, Brian Blaze, and so many others. This week on Overdrive, I have not one but two opponents. If I were to win this match, it would be...truly Awesome!" END |
