CZW Rising Star!
Hatewave, Aug 29, Liverpool, England: Motivation

What scares you?

There are the basic fears, of course. Spiders, bugs, snakes, etc, etc, but these are just the ‘Eek! Eww!’ gut reactions of something that overall is pretty harmless. What about real fears? Financial ruin. Death, not just the idea of dying but of dying a slow, painful, cancerous end. How about the loss of a loved one? These are real fears, made even more real by the fact they happen with disturbing frequency. How can you not be afraid of something when you probably know someone it has happened to?

What scares J. A. Sawyer?

Right now it was the fact that, as he watches his match against Impaler and then Bryan Daniels instead of watching the action going on in the ring at this moment, he could not remember some of it. He could see what was happening but his mind was blank toward the end. He remembered the first fall in its entirety. He remembered much of the second fall, although he didn’t actually witness ‘The Viper’s attack on Impaler. He did remember Boss Hix allowing the match to continue against Daniels. He didn’t really remember much of that part though. He really didn’t remember the clever way he defeated Daniels, probably the only way he could have won with all the punishment Sawyer had taken. And, though he had a vague notion about Tim Timmons and his chair attack, he really couldn’t remember it at all. And that scared him, wondering what kind of damage might have been done and where it could lead.

He lets the video play a moment more as Timmons grabs the mic and rants a bit. Then he hears the line that makes his blood boil.

Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Aug 31, Liverpool, England: Visitation

The man in the hospital bed groan just a bit and tries to roll over, but he really can’t. His face takes on an annoyed expression as his eyes flutter open. He squints in the lowly lit room trying to remember where he was. Then he sees Godzilla Sawyer sitting calmly across the room, watching him.

“Who in hell let you in?” Impaler asks groggily as he fought off the sleep.

Sawyer: “I have connections. What Timmons said after the match. Is it true?”

Impaler: “Maybe you weren’t paying attention there, sport. Someone told me Tim ran down there and fired me, but I wasn’t exactly in a position to listen to his speech. Didn’t hear any of it, actually.”

Sawyer nods: “Sorry. Wasn’t thinking about that. After the festivities, Tim said something about thanking him for the attack on Billy. Is that true?”

Impaler: “I guess it doesn’t matter much if I tell you now. I won’t be back in wrestling for a while, if ever. Yeah, that whole thing was his idea. Said he wasn’t sure if it would work with you, but that you and The Janitor were close and it might land me another match. Caleb was against it and didn’t really do much, either.”

Sawyer: “So like a good lap dog, you went and beat up on a non-wrestler.”

Impaler: “I wanted that match. Although, in hindsight, maybe I should have let it go. I’m starting to believe in karma.”

Sawyer: “So how do I approach Timmons when I wrestle him?”

Impaler looks incredulously at Sawyer, then begins to chuckle, then grimaces in pain. “Don’t make me laugh, ‘Zilla’. It hurts. I can’t believe you are asking me for advice.”

Sawyer: “It’s logical. Up until two days ago you were in his inner circle, now you’re
out.”

Impaler: “Nothing I can tell you, man. I don’t know if Tim Timmons plans anything before he goes out to the ring. It’s hard to tell how good of a technical wrestler he really is because he seems to make shit up as he goes once the bell rings. It’s like at any moment he sees numerous possibilities and just picks one, not always the most logical thing to do. He has skills but he doesn’t follow the strategies that you are taught in wrestling school. Other than keeping himself in tip top shape physically, I don’t think he really prepares for his opponents much at all. You can’t plan for Tim Timmons.”

Sawyer: “Actually, I can and I have trained for an unpredictable opponent. Thanks.” Sawyer stands up. “For what its worth, I’m sorry this happened. I was pissed at you and Caleb, but I wouldn’t really have taken you out of wrestling intentionally.”

Impaler: “Yeah, I know that. That’s partly why we picked on you. But thanks.”

CZW Overdrive, Sept 12, Barcelona, Spain: Escalation

At the most recent Overdrive, Jenny Jacobs interviewed Tim Timmons after his match and defeat of Kaneda Kong, Godzilla Sawyer's partner in the tag team Kaiju Warriors. There is a noise from off screen, which Timmons and Jenny turn to look, and in one smooth motion, Godzilla Sawyer steps into the shot and punches Tim straight in the mouth!

Godzilla: "The paramedic thinks his throat and larynx are damaged, you ass!"

Sawyer's face is red, his body tense and full of menace. Godzilla actually shoves Jenny out of the way to hit Timmons again, and Tim responds with a right hand of his own! With cameras still rolling, Tim Timmons and Godzilla pound on each other. Godzilla hits with two of his stunning head butts and Tim retaliates with a skillful poke to the eye. He grabs Sawyer and whips him into the brick wall, then throws several chairs at him. Sawyer bats these aside, picks up and empties a garbage can, then slams it across Tim's back. Tim stumbles and Sawyer picks him up as if for a spinebuster, instead running forward and slamming Tim's back into the barrier, CZW fans rushing out of the way. Grunting with pain, Tim has the presence of mind to grab Sawyer's head and bang it into the barrier, but Sawyer smiles as him and shakes his head 'no', then does the same thing to Tim! At this point a small army of security rush in and break up the fight.

Grenoble, France, Sept 14: Conversation

J. A. Sawyer and Kaneda are speaking on the phone as Sawyer sits in his trailer in France. While Sawyer has had an opportunity or two to go home to Michigan, particularly during the two week hiatus between Hatewave and the following Overdrive, it is simply not economical to fly to America and back to Europe between shows, so instead Sawyer is using a dressing trailer and making appearances to promote the events. Tamara ‘Bunny’ Simpson is here with him, and in fact has been with him in all of his endeavors for over a month now. He hadn’t admitted it to anyone yet, but he was getting used to the idea of having her around, and it did feel good.

Sawyer: “…and it’s a King of the Cage qualifier. If I beat Timmons, not only do I get to embarrass him but I get a huge spot on the Pay-Per-View. I hope you are feeling up to being there.”

Kaneda pauses on the line. “My injuries are not as severe as the medical technicians first thought, and though I won’t be wrestling for at least a month I would be able to make the trip.”

Sawyer: “But…” J. A. didn’t like the tone of Kaneda’s voice, rough as it was.

Kaneda: “I’m sorry. I have submitted my resignation to CZW administration. I will not be wrestling outside of Japan for a while.”

Sawyer paused now, really not expecting this. “May I ask why?”

Kaneda: “Of course. When we first teamed I thought you and I as a tag team would be a force both in America and Japan. But that is not how it is. You won the Television title and, as a result of that and the World Tour, you have not had much time for Japanese matches. Meanwhile, while I have received a few matches here and there, CZW does not seem to know what to do with me as a single and…to be honest, the environment of CZW is not where I want my legacy to be right now. I am at the start of my career and have received two injuries that have taken me out of competition. I wish to wrestle, not beat people up.”

Sawyer considered for a moment, a hundred different arguments coming to mind.

Sawyer: “Well, I hate to hear that, because I do think we can still be a great team. But I understand your point and the logic of it. You said from the start that your Japan work was most important.”

Kaneda: “You are not angry?”

Sawyer: “Hell yeah, I’m angry, but not at you. You have to do what your career needs, man. I have no right to try and talk you out of it. Maybe down the road we can revisit the Kaiju Warriors.”

Kaneda: “Thank you for understanding, my friend. I will be watching Overdrive.”

Sawyer: “Take care of yourself.”

Godzilla sat quietly for few moments, then looks at Tamara (who was curiously hanging around close by waiting): “Looks like I’m on my own for a while. Kaneda is dropping out of CZW.”

Tamara, placing a hand on his shoulder: “Doesn’t help you in tag team matches, but I’ll still be right there with you.”

Sawyer: “And you look better, too.”

Grenoble, France, Sept 15: Anticipation

The camera’s begin to roll. Godzilla Sawyer is in a makeshift set that looks like a talk show. He is wearing a grey, three-piece suit, and a skull cap that makes him look bald except for a half ring of thin white hair around his head and a grey-white moustache. His valet Bunny Simpson is there dressed in a smart blue business wear, coat and skirt. They both look at the camera, and Godzilla begins to speak in a reasonable imitation of the famous Dr. Phil McGraw.

Dr. Zilla: “Folks, we are hear today to talk about a strange case of a Mr. Timothy Timmons, a self proclaimed ‘hardcore icon’ and ‘Canada’s Finest’. Now, this man goes about his career seeming to attack people randomly but always with an ulterior motive. I mean, if you look closely, how often does Mr. Timmons attack someone who doesn’t have something he wants? Does he attack newcomers? Does he attack non-champions or non-main eventers? No, his targets are almost always people who have something he wants. And now, it is the Television Championship held by Mr. Godzilla Sawyer.”

“Now let’s really dig into the psyche of this man. Why would a man be so willing to jump on someone who is already vulnerable. I mean, Sawyer had to defend himself against a big bruiser of a man, then after he took large amounts of punishment he had to face a young wrestler who was fresh and full of energy. Even after defeating him, Timmons ruthlessly attacks with a weapon to beat Sawyer down. And supposedly, it is because Sawyer hit Timmons with a chair a few weeks ago. Now, I’m not a fool. This kind of shenanigans is a real deal-breaker! Godzilla was not the only one to strike Timmons during the brawl where this original chair shot occured. I distinctly remember Krimson Blaze nailing him good, too. But, until this past Overdrive, Blaze did not have a title around his waist. It is truly amazing how Timothy takes such offense only from the man who holds the gold!”

At this point, Godzilla stands up and begins to take off his jacket and shirt, revealing his wrestling gear underneath. He also begins to speak in his normal voice and cadence.

Godzilla: “Tim, the last couple of months should have been the best time in my life. Instead, Billy Williams and then Kaneda Kong get sidelined because of Next Generation and I find myself getting more and more enraged. And, as you said at Hatewave, I have you to thank for it. As I recall, Tim, the only reason I hit you with that chair is because Caleb saw me coming and ducked.”

Sawyer takes off the bald cap and moustache.

“But since you want a fight so bad, you have one. You want a shot at my title, fine. I have a lot of pent up frustration and anger that is just ready to explode, and you are the one who actually wants to feel it! And that doesn’t even mention the fact that our match isn’t even for the title, it’s a King of the Cage qualifier! We both know what winning this match means.

“But even above that, I’m going to have so much fun beating you, Tim, and I know I can beat you. You went off on Impaler because he had not been able to pin me. What happens if you can’t pin me, my friend? Will you kick yourself out of Next Generation? Will I suddenly become leader of the group if I kick your ass from one side of Grenoble to the other? Not that I would want to lead such a sad group like that, a bunch of guys holding on to each other for fear of becoming unnecessary.”

Sawyer begins to speak in his Dr. Phil imitation again: “Because that is what it is really all about with you, Timmons. You do the things you do because otherwise, you would no longer be in the spotlight. You can’t become great based on your skill and charisma alone, so you attack who you need to so you can stay as close to the top as you can get. And when someone threatens to take your place, to knock you a peg or two down the ladder, you get nervous. Godzilla is on the rise, Tim, and you know it. You want to put me in my place to try and show everyone that I’m not as good as they think I am.

Godzilla drops the accent and speaks in a low, cold, calm, but angry voice.

“Your mistake, Mr. Timmons, is that I am as good as they think I am! With you always looking for the spotlight, I guess you couldn’t see that. Godzilla is already the King of the Monsters. I want to be King of the Cage. I can’t wait to see you on Overdrive, Tim.”

Screen goes dark.
