CZW Rising Star!
Rampaging Kaiju: J. A. Sawyer’s blog, posted January 18, 2010.

Well, its 2010. A new year with new opportunities. Whoo Hoo!

Firstly, my fans, I want to apologize for the length of time between entries. The Holiday season has been busy despite my lesser wrestling schedule. I will try to correct this in the future and my schedule has certainly lessened in the recent week.

Where to start, where to start…

Of course I feel good about the big win at There Will Be Blood, and thanks for all of the congratulations I’ve received. That was a brutal match, as everyone expected, and a big win for me. And I hope Rob is all right from the zap. I hit the switch only long enough to be declared the winner, but I didn’t get a chance to speak with him after the show. Now, one question that keeps coming up is “Why did you do that to Rob Wright and not Tim Timmons?” That is a good question, and has a simple answer. I’ll admit that, when I went into that match, I did not foresee having the ability to choose. I assumed that, when the opportunity arose, I would go for whoever was vulnerable. When I did have to choose, though, I chose Rob I think for two reasons 1) A. Losing the multi-person match without being the one actually beaten always leaves a wrestler feeling frustrated and, I think I wanted to give Tim just one more little stab, and 2) The poor guy was hit with TWO Wrecking Balls during that match, something that I don’t think ever happened in my career before. I give him full credit for continuing the match after the first one (of course, it helped that I couldn’t just pin him after the first!), but after the 2nd, I think I wanted to take it easy on him.

‘Nuff said on that. Onto the next match.

Of course I see the opportunity that has presented itself. I’m sure most if not all of us do. And, I can’t really say I’m the most deserving of an Intercontinental Title shot. Some would argue that my job would be to defend my title at Road to Glory, and obviously I still might. Look at the other guys in this match. El Pablo? He’s a former World and IC champ, and I don’t believe he has even had a rematch against O’Toole for the belt. He should get one anyway, regardless of whether he wins or loses this battle royal. Krimson Blaze? Damn good wrestler, has earned everything he’s gotten since coming to CZW and, because of his size, puts his body on the line in ways I can’t even imagine every time he steps in to the ring. I’ve always wanted to wrestle him in a clean, singles match. A battle royal may give the advantage to the big man, but the quick, wiry guy can be a bitch to throw out, too. Brian Kirkland is like me, holding his own title but I’m sure sees the benefit of ‘trading up’, so to speak. His Hardcore style really doesn’t help him here but he has a lot of stick-to-it-tiveness when he has a goal. Mike King, I don’t know if you are getting into the ring with face paint or what, but you are another one I’ve watched with a competitor’s eye, and I won’t be overlooking your chances here. Frank Finch? Hasn’t seen much in-ring time until recently and might not deserve a spot in this match, but he does have a good resume in the business so I can see why his name came up. Rob Wright could do worse than bouncing off a loss at There Will Be Blood with a win against a newcomer AND the IC contender battle royal in the same evening. I’m sure Zodiac and Caleb see a shot at redemption here, both of them looking for a way to prove they still have it, that they aren’t has-beens or also-rans. Kimo Newton? Again, it is arguable that he deserves a place here, but IF he wins the three way match AND the battle royal, he would prove everyone wrong and do something I don’t think any newby has ever done in CZW! That goes for Johnny Kerosene as well. Almost everyone involved deserves this shot or will have to win another match first to prove they deserve it, but only one of us will win it.

Talk about pressure!

What should I do? What else can I do? If I don’t go into that match with the intent to win, the other participants won’t even respect me. Even Pablo, who deserves this shot more than anyone since he’s the man who lost the title last, wouldn’t want me to hold back or let him win.

I understand that, reading this, you don’t realize how long it would take me to type something up. As I attempt to put my thoughts into writing, my television set, which I sometimes keep on in the background, cranked up the news and I found myself transfixed. Here I am, jotting down the ‘What should I do’s’ and ‘How should I do it’s’ about my next match and my career in professional wrestling…and there are people right now struggling to survive after a disaster of proportions I have a hard time imagining. Around here in Grand Rapids, Michigan, we deal with a blizzard every so many years and a few tornadoes maybe, but nothing on the level that they are dealing with in Haiti. It boggles the mind how your whole life can change in just a moment and in this case the lives of your family, your neighbors, your co-workers, and everyone else around you. I wasn’t in California during their big earthquakes, I wasn’t in New York on 9-11, and I wasn’t in New Orleans after Katrina. If the worst thing I have to worry about is an injury to myself or my opponent from the kinds of matches we do, and dealing with the occasional Tim Timmons, I have to say that I’m really blessed. I don’t live the best life out there, but what do I have to complain about?

It even goes farther than that. This is Martin Luther King’s birthday, a day spent remembering a great man who had to fight for so many things. I mean, put it all into context. Here is a man who understood that many great strides were made in equality after the Civil War and then gradually taken away by political maneuvering so that, within 30 yrs after the war, equality wasn’t even an issue that could be feasibly brought up in front of Congress. The folks against true integration slowly rose into power and reversed a lot of things. Mr. King literally had to fight for everything he got. And now what do we worry about? Do we get the wide screen on sale at Wal-Mart the day after Thanksgiving? Should we eat at Burger King, Popeye’s, or Taco Bell?

Yeah, I know that’s an oversimplification. Some folks have really big worries and go through their own private hells right here in America, the most privileged country in the world. Cancer scares me, and I have some close, personal experience with that one. What happened in Haiti scares me. I can’t imagine what it would be like to wake up with your house gone not knowing who is still alive, who has died, and where your next meal will come from.

Rosie O’Donell scares me, big time!

Sorry about that last one if anyone is offended. Had to lighten the mood. Even when I’m not in front of cameras, I’m always the one to crack a joke when things get too grim.

There is an old country song by the Statler Brothers that goes like this:

It makes me grateful just to know, to know that I can be
Unique and fill the spot beside the other three
Without a place here in this world I know that I’d be lost.
Thank you, world, thank you world for letting me contribute to the cause.

And I think that about sums it up. I’m not a big man when it comes to the world at large. I doubt I’ll ever be a Senator, the CEO of some major company, or even a big enough celebrity where huge amounts of fans cling to every word I say. I’m a mid-range to big fish in the business of Professional Wrestling. People come to the arenas and turn the dial (Dial? Heh! How many TV’s have those anymore?) to watch me and the other guys perform. And I realize that pro wrestling fans are a rather small percentage of the sports fandom. But you know, with all of the things going on in this world, if I can help relieve some people of a little stress and get their minds off things by getting in the ring and wrestling to my best ability, so be it. If I can make them smile and laugh because of some corny promo or video, why not? I’m a performer, an entertainer, and CZW is my stage every bit as much as when Bill Cosby stands up in front of an audience, Keifer Sutherland steps up onto the set, or Beyonce gets into the recording booth. It’s what I do, and I do it well.

So here are some short messages for those competitors who get a chance to read this:

As far as the guys who still must qualify, in a way I’m a bit sorry. You guys have to wrestle just to get to the battle royal while the rest of us will be fresh. Kerosene and Kimo, I appreciate that you get the opportunity here but I’m not sure either of you against O’Toole on a PPV would put asses in seats, so forgive me if I’m not excited by the prospect.

Zodiac and Caleb, you were there on that first show when we didn’t really know who each other were. I know you are both hungry and ready. If I weren’t part of this match, I would almost want one of you to win just to put you into the spotlight that you both deserve. The potential match-ups with you guys back and ready aren’t hard to see. I just hope that, physically, with all you both have been through, you are up to this kind of thing.

Rob Wright, it’s pretty funny, but if you make it to the royal, this would the third or fourth time in the last few months we’ve been against each other somehow! We’ll probably get tired of seeing each other if this keeps up. But you have your money in the bank briefcase firmly locked away. I think its someone else’s turn.

Frank Finch, you are good, but in the same way as I stated to the new guys above, I don’t see you and the IC champ really being the big draw that the rest of us would be, and I don’t think your perfect ring execution will really help you getting the others out of the ring. Sorry, man, but I just don’t see that.

Mike King, you have been one of those guys I’ve watched, because we do watch the ones who will give us the greatest challenges. You have some incredible matches behind you, and one of these days, you and I will have to face each other just to see what would happen. This week, though, it’s a battle royal that really doesn’t test anyone’s real wrestling ability. It’s all a matter of who hits the floor. Maybe next time we’ll have a real challenge, but this is just business and I can’t focus on you except to eliminate you.

Brian Kirkland, you’ve made some pretty big changes recently, and here you even have to eliminate your own tag team partner if you want to win. Again, your hardcore style does you little good but you do have enough honest wrestling skill and a ton of experience to rely on. Again, we’ve never really had a one-on-one match and I’m not sure if our different styles would mesh well against each other, but it would be interesting to try.

Krimson Blaze, for sheer brilliance and ability, I’m not sure there is anyone in CZW that can compare to you. You do things a man shouldn’t be able to do. I’ve watched you seemingly change your direction in mid-air, something that should be impossible! Again, this kind of match does not favor the small, but you’ve been graced with incredible talent. Honestly, the only person I see more dangerous than you in this thing would be if Caleb makes it in with his weight and musculature. You, though, we can send you over the top a dozen times only to have you slip back in.

El Pablo, old friend, what is there to say. We were there on that first show, we both fell short, and we both have been working hard ever since. I still wonder, if I had stayed in CZW instead of leaving those times if my resume here would be as impressive as yours. And you truly deserve the rematch, and I hope you have a rematch clause you can still utilize. As much as I’d like to just give you the shot if I win the battle royal, you know I can’t do that.

This is a huge event, gentlemen. CZW has had so many of these matches, but very few of them have had the level of talent as this one. With the exceptions of Kerosene and Kimo, all of us have our accolades in this company, our great moments and big victories. Eight of us are going in, but only one of us will start on our personal Road to Glory on this next Overdrive. While I hate to be greedy as the current TV champion. I still have to say that losing this belt by taking another belt higher up on the ladder suits me fine. It’s the only acceptable way for me to drop the TV title, as far as I’m concerned. And I used to say I was no good in these kind of things, but I seem to have won the last few multi-person matches I've been part of. This will be a great contest, but I think it time for the Monster from Michigan to climb a little closer to the top and distinguish himself as one of Combat Zone’s true elite.

And, finally, I would just love to know who it is Maynard O’Toole would like to win this match, THAT would be interesting.

Thanks for listening. This is J. A. Sawyer, signing off.
