The One Man Legacy
The sound of crunching under foot. It was always comforting. The smoke blowing through the air. The sound of glasses clinking together, the murmur of dozens of other patrons. Cage stepped into Crusher's Public House with a smile on his face as usual.

Normally he came with Sirena. Sirena kept him balanced. Such a moody girl, Sirena was as volatile as anyone Cage had ever known. Somehow, it forced Cage to stay grounded.

Cage strode up to the bar and took up a stool. The bartender, as usual, didn't even ask. Within moments, a Guinness sat in front of him.

Cage watched the head rise. The cream colored foam rose through the dark brown liquid in waves. For some reason, Cage always found the sight hypnotizing... beautiful.

"Oh man, how do you drink that stuff?" said a voice from the stool next to him, "Don't you need a fork?"

Connor raised an eyebrow, but didn't look up. "Oatmeal is better than cold piss."

The stranger laughed, "Either that or you need your beer to justify your belief that you're actually a New Yorker?"

This, Cage looked up for. He saw the man, shockingly actually bigger than Cage, laughing along with two of his buddies at the bar.

The second man down pointed, "Uh oh, I think ya pissed him off."

Connor simply shook off his anger, smiled, took down the Guinness in a single gulp, and cordially smashed the glass over the first man's head.

The man slumped to the floor as his two friends looked at Cage in fear, but Cage was already seated, ordering another Guinness. The bartender sat down the glass and shrugged at the two men.

"He always tips extra when he makes a mess."

Cage smirked at the comment.

“Has she arrived yet?”

“You mean that Jenny Jacobs girl?”

“Yeah, she’s suppose to meet me here for this skit I have planned tonight.”

“Of all the places you could do that, why’d you come here with an old washed up superstar like myself?”

“Crusher man, I don’t know…I just wanted to give my fans something different for a chance. I mean, sure, I could go out there and be like…damn it Matt Covey, your standing in the way of my world title. I’m gonna beat your ass all over Rochester if that’s what it takes.”

“I thought that’s what wrestling was all about?”

“Crusher, such a highly decorated retired superstar such as yourself should know the game better than that. I mean, sure, those kind of promos might work for guys like Alan Fiscus and Jesse Montana…but then there’s men like myself, El Pablo, and hell even Matt Covey right now. We try to get in tune with the fans. We try to make them feel like they’re a part of something more. We want them to identify with us. Now, I’m not saying anybody can lace up their boots and put on the tights and become a great wrestler. That would be stupid. No, to be a superstar…you have to have a certain something. Allen had it, Matt has it, TJ has it, and so do you man. I know it’s been a few years since you’ve been in the ring…but look deep inside of you and you’ll see what I’m saying.”

Crusher takes a moment to reflect on his glory days.

“I know man…but seriously…this run down old heap? Fans don’t wanna see this.”

“Sure they do, it allows them to understand that we’re regular people just like everyone else…the only difference…is some of us have gained fame and glory while others would much rather just watch it on TV or read about it on Wrestlenet.com.”

Cage empties his glass again as Crusher pours him another.

“Sorry bout that there. I thought I was past all this anger stuff, but I guess there’s just some jack holes that still know how to push the wrong buttons.”

Crusher looks over the bar at the still unconscious stranger.

“That…heh, don’t worry bout it. I’m not a fan af that guy or his cronies anyway. Hell, you may have done me a favor and I won’t have to look at their ugly mugs anymore.”

“You know Crusher, I think I have quite a treat for the fans tonight. I mean, I could go over to Rochester and start preparing for my upcoming match…but you know what…I’m just happy to be home. The last time I spent any lengthy periods of time here is when my parents passed a couple of years back.”

“Yeah man, sorry bout your loss.”

“Eh, they had both gotten really sick. I mean…they weren’t very old, and I do miss them…but you know as well as I, the world works in mysterious ways. I still keep my Dad’s dog tags with me everywhere I go…and Sirena wears my mother’s locket. They’re still with me in heart.”

“Yeah, but a good guy like you don’t deserve that.”

“Ha, Crusher, have you not watched CzW in a while? I’ve not exactly been a really good guy. Attackin innocent people…bitchin and moanin about someone cashing in their Money in the Bank. Yeah, my behavior has been very appropriate as of late…but I’m tryin to get myself back where I belong. That’s why I have decided here would be where I would do my skit.”

“Well quit yer yappin and let’s get started.”

Cage raises an eyebrow and Crusher looks over at the entrance to the pub. Jenny stands there holding a handheld video camera and her own personal voice recorder.

“You’re a bit late aren’t ya Ms. Jacobs?”

“I’m not familiar with New York, it was hell finding this place.”

“Did you lose your directions?”

“Maybe…but still…”

“Alright Jenny, I’ll meet you outside.”

Jenny trudges back outside as Cage downs his last glass. He shakes Crusher’s hand and then drops a set of keys on the counter.

“What’s these?”

“Heh, go to the corner of 5th and Main…should be something waiting for you.”

“5th and Main…but that’s where…”

Cage smiles.

“That’s where your new bar should be waiting for you. Get you out of this dung heap.”

“But how…”

“I know you’ve had your eyes on that location for a while…so, I took care of it for you.”

“Bro…you shouldn’t have…”

“I wanted too. You take it easy now Crusher…I think Allen’s already over there fixing the place up.”

“You too man…you too.”

Cage smiles again and steps outside where Jenny is waiting beside his Rebel.

“How do you expect to perform an interview on this?”

“Heh, actually, this interview is going to be done on foot.”

“On foot,” Jenny whines. “But Brooklyn is huge.”

“I know, and we have a lot of ground to cover. That’s why I told you to pack light. Come on, we’re losing precious time. You ready?”

“I guess.”

“Then start shooting.”

Jenny grumbles as she turns on her camera and Cage sits down on his motorcycle.

“3...2...1...action…”

“Hello CzW Universe. This is Cage Stryker bringing to you another edition of HD TV. The hostess for this is none other than CzW’s Finest…Jenny Jacobs. Now, I decided for this coming match up to do something a little different. This is more of a serious segment…and I know my last one didn’t take off too well, but eh, never hurts to try again right? Now, as everyone knows…I’m set to face my fellow #1 Contender, Bad Ass Matt Covey…and it’s no surprise that everyone knows that he and I have a history together. A history aside from CzW. Now, you’ve all listened to some of my past rants about my past. Perhaps that bores people…but I feel as though a person’s past…shapes a person’s future. And I have…slightly touched base before about being in a gang once. Now…I’ll be the first to admit…that is a part of my past that I wish I could erase…but unfortunately…the past is already written, and there’s no going back. Now…the reason for this segment…I’m actually going to finally let you in on my life as a gangster.”

Cage gets off his bike and begins walking.

“Now…perhaps you’re all wondering…why now? Why am I boring you all with details of my gang life. Or better yet…what does it have to do with Bad Ass Matt Covey…CzW…or even the World Title Contendership? Well, the answer…is quite simple.”

Cage stops and Jenny zooms in on his face.

“Everything. It has everything to do with Bad Ass Matt Covey…CzW…The World title Contention. You see, Bad Ass and I go way back. Way back before CzW? As a matter of fact…it goes all the way back to here.”

Cage has stopped in front of an old rundown theater.

“I was born and raised in Brooklyn. I reside in Las Angeles now. I lived a happy life. I had a great family…and I was a fairly brilliant child. Graduated top of my class every school year. Well, unfortunately…I fell into the category of nerd. And during my teenage years…and hell, even now…nerds aren’t exactly accepted into society. I was still known as Johnathan Kurtis during those years. There was a bully named Swifty McVay. Heh, I’m sure you all recognize the last name. Yes, he was related to Allescha McVay. It was his cousin actually. If you want to know more about that though…talk to Hix. Anyway, I was walking home from school one day and Swifty was on the prowl. Well, I just so happened to be the unlucky prey. Him and a couple of his boys decided to beat the unholy shit out of me. Hell, they bout near crippled me.”

“How do you say that so casual?”

“It was a long time ago Jenny. It was just one of those things you have to let go. Anyway…I was saved that day…by two unlikely heroes. As I lay there bleeding…”

Cage points to the curb.

“Yeah, right there. Swifty decided it would be fun to curb stomp somebody. I was weak…I was a wuss, I’m not afraid to admit it. There wasn’t mush I could do. All three guys outweighed me by a heavy margin. I couldn’t power my way out no matter how hard I tried. So there I was…helpless…about to die…but two guys had been watching me…and two guys came to my aid.”

“Who?”

“Heh…you’ll find it hard to believe…but they were known as TJ Hicks and Matt Covey.”

“WHAT!!? NO WAY??”

Cage chuckles as he shakes his head.

“Yeah, I knew you’d react that way…but it’s true. Those two guys were ferocious. They beat the f**k out of those guys and then helped me up. They checked on me…made sure I was alright…then told me I had better stick with them. Apparently they had their own issues with Swifty and Company. Now, I was unaware I was joining a gang. I just thought I was welcomed into a clique. Everyone knows what a clique is.”

Jenny seems confused.

“Clique…not clit Jenny…”

“Hey…”

“Anyway…but yeah, Beautiful Agony, XTC, Youthful Aggression…those are all cliques. Now, I was definitely surprised when I found out how wrong I was. I don’t know if it was the initiation…or the first time in Juvenile Hall that woke me up to the mistake I had made. Initiation was me getting the hell beat out of me by the other gang members…which…painfully…I did succeed. Anyway, but do to the fact of just wanting to belong…I stayed with the gang. We did some terrible things…but I was right along with it. No excuse for it. But I stayed…it wasn’t until about 5 years later I finally checked out of that lifestyle. We had become more than just a group of guys vandalizing property and shoplifting. Drugs, alcohol, kidnapping, murder…all became involved… I don’t wish to go into too much detail on that…but rest assured, when those things came into play…I left…and got myself on the right track. I would go on to actually become NYPD. I went through a lot of mental tests because they weren’t sure with my history if I would be right in the force. However, once again, I excelled and once again, graduated with honors from the Police Academy. I have several awards and stuff for my time in NYPD…I just keep them put away…because of one night. I had gotten a distress call as I patrolled the streets. And they had come from…well, right here in this old theater. TJ by this point had fallen into a coma. His mind was not right…and it shut itself down. The reasons are still unknown to me…I had already moved on and didn’t keep up with them anymore. Matt on the other hand was still on the streets doing what he did…and unfortunately…he was the distress call. Something had been going down…no one knew what…nor did they know who was involved. All they did know is they had followed it to the old theater. I was the first on the scene and me still being untried in an actual hostile situation…I decided to do some solo investigation. I wanted to earn my stripes so to speak. It was a mistake. The door to the abandoned theater had already been pried open…so I slipped in. First thing I did was radio my partner. She was on a lunch break. Well, she wasted no time to get back to me…but I had already entered the building before she got there. Alaina Ray…beautiful woman…probably the best looking on the force but I was already in a serious relationship with Sirena by that time. Anyway, as I investigated…I heard a whimpering from one of the theaters rooms. I drew my Beretta and had it ready for anything. Well, I eased my way into the room and down in front of the decrepit projection…I saw one of the bloodiest sights I have ever seen. Swifty McVay lay in a pool of his own blood, and standing over him like the devil incarnate…was Matt Covey. It would turn out that Swifty had shot TJ…and the shock, put him into his coma. Matt took matters into his own hands and nearly killed Swifty for that. I gasped and Matt heard me…but, he was unaware of who I was. He fired a shot at me, but I had managed to duck out of the way and yelled out to Matt who I was. I told him to drop the gun and come to me. He did…but it was too late before I realized how huge of a mistake I had made. Swifty still breathed and just as Matt reached me, I heard the click of a chamber. I shoved Matt out of the way…but Alaina…wasn’t so lucky…the bullet ripped straight through her heart. She was dead before she even hit the ground. During all the confusion, she had apparently arrived and was making her way to where she had heard Matt’s shot go off.”

Jenny looks frightened.

“Yeah, that was the first time I had ever blacked out. All I remembered was seeing her hit the floor. The next thing I remembered was standing over Swifty with blood dripping of my knuckles. Needless to say, I’ve struggled with demons all my life…it didn’t just start in the CzW. I arrested Matt that day…and also got my transfer papers filled out. I was LAPD bound. NYPD didn’t want to fire me, or arrest me…so instead they had me transferred to LAPD. I went to Alaina’s funeral and her burial. After that…I had to leave the state.”

“What became of Swifty?”

“No one knows…nor do much of us care. Now…I hope you enjoyed that little history lesson. I’m sure it raised more questions than it answered…but…in appreciation to my fans, I felt it only right to invite them into a dark part of my life. Now, you heard me speak of demons.”

“Yes.”

“Well, though I may have my demons…there’s one man who has more than I can ever even dream. That man is none other than Bad Ass Matt Covey. He grew up in a trailer park in some area of Kentucky. He had an abusive family…and God knows what other issues. But again…he is another example of the past setting forth a future. Now, I could go into some details about his past…but that would not be right. That’s not my place to stir up his demons…especially since he has really been trying to rehabilitate and turn over a new leaf. He is just another victim of circumstance. The world dealt him a bad hand…but he has coped…probably far better than most people I know. His ways are a bit unorthodox…but that what makes Bad Ass Matt Covey…Bad Ass Matt Covey. Now, I could start trashin on him…I could call him trailer park trash…I could call him a lot of things…but what would that honestly accomplish. For one, it wouldn’t be very sportsman like…and though some people are leery about this change of his…if you don’t give it a chance…how will you know how it’s going to play out. Hell, for all I know…Matt might run me over with a car at Overdrive…he might assault me backstage…but am I going to assume that. No. I want to give this new Covey a chance. I don’t want to be like all those kids he grew up with teasing him…telling him he’d never amount to anything. Funny thing is…look at him now. A huge CzW Superstar…and all those kids that teased him…they’re still livin at home with mommy. See, Matt has already made leaps and bounds no one ever expected him to. Sure, I may have arrested him once…but it was only once. And it was to try to protect him from himself. Given the chance…after what Swifty did to his best friend…Matt would have killed him. While he was behind bars though…he actually created a pretty good saying for himself. How did it go? Ah yes, he wasn’t locked in there with them…they were locked in there with him. He’s lived by that one phrase for about as long as I’ve known him. His first night in there…he walked up to Zeke…big black man…very intimidating…who yeah, I also arrested. Anyway, turns out Zeke was Swifty’s brother. He was in there for several counts of manslaughter…several murder charges, assault and battery, carrying a concealed weapon…etc. He had a laundry list a mile long. He even shanked a fellow inmate. Well, Matt walked up to this guy…busted his mouth and broke his jaw. They had to wire it. Matt didn’t mess around…he knew the game. Take down the biggest dog in the yard…and he did. Zeke requested a prison transfer. Needless to say, Matt had a fairly easy time while he sat in prison, no one was man enough to try and step up. Smart guys. When his court date came up, I appealed him and explained what had happened. He was let out on probation.”

Cage starts walking again, Jenny staying close up on him. Darkness is falling.

“Now, I know the guys in CzW are havin a hard time givin Matt a chance. They all have mixed reactions toward him…but he has tried to repent for all he has done…and some people aren’t quite ready to forgive him. You for instance Jenny.”

“What do you expect? He ruined me and my name.”

“Why, because he showed what a whore that you really are?”

“…uh…eh…hey…”

“You oughta talk to him. You’d probably be surprised. Anyway, I knew it would only be a matter of time before we would see Cage versus Matt. I don’t know, but people just seem to strive on friend against friend. That’s fine though. It’ll be nice to actually go head to head with Matt…one on one. We’ve had a few matches in our careers here against one another, but never a good one. Summer Showdown two years ago it was a street fight, but Matt‘s authority issues had him attacking the GM at the time. Our other matches haven‘t been one on ones. I think it’ll be quite a treat to see how well I can compete with one of my two mentors. It’s actually quite a rush knowing I’m stepping in the ring with the biggest bad ass of them all…and I’m not stepping down. I mean, I have mad respect for what Matt has done as of late. He’s showing the CzW that he isn’t some one dimensional cliché. He did have to take some time off to try and clear his head…and try to fix some of his personal issues. Then, he came back…and the whole CzW universe was shaken by his sudden change. He’s still the same Bad Ass who likes to down a few beers here and there…cuss like a sailor…and beat the unholy f**k out of anyone who gets in his way. He’s never been known to be a coward. Anytime…anyplace…if there was an ass to kick…so be it. If there was a smart mouth jack hole runnin his mouth, Matt didn’t care to shut it. Heh, the fans better not blink during that match because it’s gonna be some high def raw action. I’m not much of the brawler type, so I may have to down play my game some during that match…because one place I do not want to be, is at the end of one Bad Ass’s fists. He doesn’t need brass knuckles for the power of the punch. That guy has some lethal fists of fury. Wow…the anticipation is surreal. Can you imagine the ratings that match can bring. It’s a match of the ages. Two completely different styles and two completely different mentalities. Heh, we’ll keep the fans guessin. Rochester will never forget CzW after Matt and I take the stage.”

Cage seems to slip of into a daydream as Jenny keeps looking around…paranoid. Cage seems to be on cloud 9...until his demeanor seems to change almost instantly. It actually startles Jenny.

“Damn, I’m so caught up in the anticipation I almost forgot what’s on the line. The fun and games may have to be placed on hold for a bit and saved for a possible future match up. I mean…here I’ve been ignorantly thinking this match was just a display of awesomeness and sportsmanship. When in all reality…it’s for the #1 Contendership for the World Title at Road To Glory. Finally…after nearly three months of being out of the Main Event Spotlight, I finally have an opportunity to try and reclaim what was once mine. However, I’m going to have to go through Matt to do it. I can’t believe I nearly forgot about that. I was just so psyched to try my hand against Bad Ass…I forgot that all together. Now, Matt has made it perfectly clear…Titles do not entice him…however…the man holding that title…does… Matt’s rival…Alan Fiscus. Gold or not, I’m sure Matt still wants to get a hold of Fiscus…and here’s his opportunity. Take me down…then nothing stands between him and Alan. I can’t even fathom what’s running through Bad Ass’s head right now. He want’s Fiscus…I want Fiscus…but we both want him for completely different reasons. I have gotten over the dastardly assault with Money in the Bank…but I haven’t gotten over the World Title…if it weren’t for that briefcase…I would still be the Champion. I believe that with every fiber of my being. Matt on the other hand…just wants to hurt Alan…break him…retire him. Gold or not, it would just be an added bonus for him. So though we have a common enemy…we have two different causes. And unfortunately…that puts us at odds with one another. So a match that could have been full of respect…is now tainted by hatred…and a burning desire to face Fiscus and end him. That puts everything I’ve just said into a whole different perspective.”

Cage leans up against a fence and stares into the night sky.

“Damn it, it’s all Jesse’s fault. Because of that slight snag in the road…I now find myself back at square one…all because Jesse got on this crazy power trip. We know he’s the GM…but why did he have to stick his nose in business that didn’t pertain to him. A simple no would have sufficed…but no…for the last two months he has tried to drag me off the original I had set forth on upon losing the World Title. Jesse got in the way and I nearly bottomed out. I nearly lost everything I had worked so hard to earn. It’s been almost two months since I have grazed the main event spotlight…all because of Jesse f**king Montana. You know what though…I put him in his place at There Will Be Blood. I gave him a taste of his own medicine. I made him feel the despair of defeat…and the distress of embarrassment. He had all his little chickies lined in a row…he had the deck stacked against me every which way he could. He even used Mortius hoping to destroy me. But I overcame it all…and 1...2...3...victory was mine…and there wasn’t a damn thing he was going to do about it to stop me. I proved to be his greater…even though I do have to admit…the Jackal thing was a bad break for him. But get in his mind a moment…he wouldn’t have hesitated to have done the same thing. I hope you enjoy rest Jesse…you’re gonna need it. And before any rumors get started…no, Jackal and I are not in cahoots with one another. Jackal acted upon his own free will…but then again, if you got run down by a car…you’d probably be the same way.

Cage stands back up and begins walking again.

“The World Title did change me…and it wasn’t for the better. It made me do unspeakable things that I’ll probably never forgive myself for. Given the opportunity however, I will try to make up for my wrongs as Champion again. Given the World title again…I would do things much differently. If you had ask me two years ago…Cage…you think you’ll ever be a multi champion who will hold the longest reign for the World Title…I would have laughed at you. Two years ago Sirena and I stood before the board of directors as Johnathan Kurtis and Sarah James. We pleaded our case and explained why CzW was for us. Two days later we got approached by Ryan Lewis who had our contracts ready. Sarah and I were given our ring names…but Jesse and Derek didn’t make us Cage and Sirena…the fans did. And it was that belief that would carry us through our entire CzW career. It was that belief that won me the TV Title from probably one of the best champs in Shawn Waters. It was that belief that carried Sirena through dethroning Allyson Thorn…who held the QoC Division with an iron fist. That belief would then propel me to taking the X-Division to all new heights…and allowing her to capture the new Diva Championship. And then…I finally…after a year…reached the top of the mountain and became the longest reigning CzW World Heavyweight champion. It’s also that belief that hasn’t allowed Sirena and I to turn our backs on the CzW…even during it’s darkest days. I stand before you 31 & 10. And it’s because of all my fans and all the support they have given me my nearly two years of being in the CzW. I know I’ve lost some fan base…and I accept that…but that means I’m just going to have to work that much harder to reclaim them. And Matt…my mentor…my friend…my brother…you stand in my way of doing just that.”

Cage shifts his position some before talking again. He checks to make sure Jenny is still with him.

“Now Matt, I don’t want you or CzW to get the idea that I’m going back to how I was before. No…Matt, I don’t want you to think that the majestic pull of the limelight and the gold is blurring judgment. Everything I have said tonight…I mean whole heartedly. The gold changed me once…but not again. Every word I have poured out to Jenny tonight is true…and if there was any other way around this…believe me when I say I would prefer it. However, things don’t always play out idealistically. I hope you understand where I’m coming Matt. I’ve done what I never thought possible…and I want that back…even if I have to go through you…or TJ to do it. I got the taste…but I want a second helping. If it were anyone else I was stepping into the ring with…I would not have poured all these muse that I have…I probably would have done the typical…I’m gonna whip your ass…that World title is mine…but it wasn’t anyone else. It’s you. I still look forward to this upcoming bout…but with a heavy heart…you are an obstacle in my way…and I will move you anyway I can…but hopefully when the dust settles, we can swing by the pub and drinks a few rounds in celebration."

Cage finally stops just outside a cemetary.

"This is where my parents are buried...and it is also where our journey ends tonight. Just a few days away I get another chance to reclaim my glory...and again test myself against another worthy opponent. They'll know it's me coming when you here the fans chanting my name. And Cage's era begins again. Thank you Jenny, and thank you CzW Universe for taking some time to reflect with me. Good night everybody. Peace I'm outta here."
