A dark room is made visible, solely by the street light making its way through the broken blinds on a window on the same wall the camera angle is positioned. The outline of a person can be seen sitting on a sofa. No other details of the person can be made out, male or female, young or old. A television flickers on to the right and in front of the person. Now, more can be determined about the person. It is an older woman, mid-50’s or so. She is dressed in a long, zip-up robe with flowers printed all over it. She has greasy, brown hair; obviously she hasn’t washed it in days. Her skin is wrinkled, showing the hard life she has lived. She stares at the tv through large glasses. At first the tv sound is distorted, but once we are able to understand the voices coming from it, we know that she is watching CzW Overdrive. She is right in the middle of the Wes Hartley, Mountain Man match. She cringes with each bump, each punch, each kick.

Jarred Daniels - HARTLESS DRIVER! HARTLESS DRIVER!

Once the three is counted the tv is turned off, and the bright, overhead lights click on. The newest CzW wrestler Wes Hartley comes in to camera from the left wearing jeans and a black tshirt.

Wes’ voice cracks with the emotion.

Wes: See mom, no need to worry. That’s why I brought this VHS home. So you could see that I can handle myself. I made it through that fine. I’ll make it through this next one fine. I’m close to making it big. I’ll make enough money to get you the treatment you need.

Wes’ mother doesn’t move. She seems lost in a coma, but Wes continues to talk to her, voice cracking, taking breaks to gather himself.

Wes: Yeah, and once we get you that treatment………we’ll…….me and you, we’ll buy you that big house. I’ll quit wrestling and we’ll put you up in your new house. I will have made enough money by then to enjoy our lives. Who knows, maybe by then I’ll be able to give you a grandchild. But mom……mom……….you have to fight, you can’t give up. Mom, are you listening? Do you understand? You have to fight! Just like I’m doing. I’m fighting for you, you have to fight for me!!!

Wes comes and sits down by his mother, grabbing her by the hand and getting face to face with her. Wes stares into his mother’s eyes, as they coldly stare right through him.

Wes: Mom, come on. Wake up!

Just then the house phone rings. Wes gets up and walks off screen.

Ring

Ring

Wes takes a deep breath to strengthen his voice before answering the phone.

Wes: Hello?

Wes: Hey doc.

Wes: No, she’s still the same. Nothing new. But I have a new revenue stream now, so we should be able to pay for that new treatment very soon.

Wes: Well don’t you think it will still work?

Wes: Alright doc, I’ll keep you posted of any changes, thanks for calling.

Wes walks back to the sofa and sits down by his mother again.

Wes: Mom, doc says that it’s a good thing that we’re getting some money for your treatment. He says that it is a sure thing that it will work. This is our out mom. I just have to keep on winning, and I will. I will not let you down mom, I promise.

Wes pats his mom’s hand as he gets up and the screen goes black.

In a bar in New York City, sits Wes Hartley. He has bellied up to the bar in the far corner from the door. It is either very early or very late as Wes, the bartender, and a couple guys sitting at a table on the other side of the room are the only people there. Wes has a few shot glasses, and a couple mugs in front of him. The bartender is wiping down the bar, making his way to the end Wes is sitting. Wes finishes his latest beer and looks up towards the bartender.

Wes: How about another?

Bartender: You’re drinkin’ like your tryin’ to forget something son. Anything you want to talk about?

Wes: Not with you, just get me another beer.

Bartender: Alright.

The bartender turns and begins to fill another mug.

Wes (to himself): Of course I’m drinking to forget something. The only problem is, I can’t. It’s all I think about, and so, I have to continue down this path. I have to win. No matter what I have to win. And win I will.

The bartender returns with Wes’ new beer. The beer is set in front of him, and he grabs it by the handle. One big swig later, Wes sets the mug on the bar. The bartender walks back down to serve a new guy who has walked in and sat down on the stool closest to the door.

Wes (to himself): This week I have 2 more big rednecks. Two guys who haven’t shown anything about themselves. These two guys just got drunk in the ring instead of wrestle at the last Overdrive. And they deserve to be in a match on the first ever CzW iPPV? I guess I don’t get to make that call. My job at the Manhattan Center at Kingdom Come will be to win. Not for myself, my fans, or the CzW brass, but instead, for Mom. See, I don’t have an option. I have to win. I’m the only guy on the roster that can’t lose. I have to get the extra money for the win. It’s up to me to get my mom better. I’m one match in, and one match closer to affording her treatment.

Wes finishes his beer, and signals to the bartender he needs his check.

Wes (to himself): So now, I go back to my quiet motel room. I sit and watch tv to waste the time. Until I find myself in the ring at Kingdom Come with Jeremy Dart and Cole Williams. Dart, that guy is an enigma. He shows up ready to fight half the time. When this guy is on, he’s good enough to beat his opponent into submission, but when he’s not on, he’s not even average. Williams, heh, he’s only shown his inability to live up to his mentor’s name. Buck Evans is a legend here, and I’ll have to keep an eye on him during the match, but Williams, he shouldn’t be a problem. As long as Buck keeps himself out of this match, Williams doesn’t have a chance. I am the guy who has the most to lose in this match, and the most to gain. That makes me the dangerous one. That makes me the eventual winner. Not because I’m better than the other two, but because I have no other option.

The bartender brings the check over to Wes. After looking it over, Wes leaves a few dollar bills on the bar and walks out as the scene ends.
