What are you most excited for in the return of Grey's?

Arizona and…?
Following Eliza Minnick’s exit, Arizona is on the prowl. “She’s ready to have copious amounts of fun,” Capshaw says. Could that fun involve the only new female doc, Carina (Stefania Spampinato), who just so happens to be the sister of Arizona’s roommate, DeLuca? That would certainly lead to some juicy drama, but only time will tell!

Grey's Anatomy cast previews a 'lighter, funnier, and sexier' season 14

Jessica Capshaw Talks Grey's Anatomy Season 14

A huge surprise is in store for Arizona Robbins.

It’s a difficult feat for any show to return for multiple seasons — let alone a fourteenth! — yet, Grey’s Anatomy is doing just that with aplomb (and a whole bunch of cliffhangers to resolve). Unlike few other television dramas, Grey's Anatomy's incomparable storytelling and emotional journeys have earned the show a steadfast fan base, one that's currently counting down to the two-hour season premiere this Thursday, September 28th.

Following the statement by writer and creator Shonda Rhimes to "prepare yourselves,” viewers have some burning questions about the upcoming episodes. Enter Jessica Capshaw, returning for her 10th year as Arizona Robbins, chief of pediatric surgery at Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital and general badass on Grey’s. T&C chatted with the scene stealer about her character’s big surprise, hints about the new season, and growing up with a family in show business (her mom is actress Kate Capshaw and stepdad is Steven Spielberg).

Shonda Rhimes made a statement saying viewers should prepare themselves for this season premiere of Grey’s Anatomy. Can you give us any hints as to what’s in store for those first two hours?
I love it. That’s it, that’s all she said?

That’s what she said!
I would say that what you can prepare yourself for are what I think most people’s favorite parts of Grey’s Anatomy are: the humor, the absurdity, the sex, the understanding, the empathy. All of that is amped up and working to the nth degree in the first two hours.

And how about for the rest of the season?
At the beginning of the show, this was a story about these residents who were just incoming and knew very little but were going to learn a lot. Now, 14 years later, you can’t pretend that they don’t know a lot, but there continue to be things that they don’t know. I think that the examination of and the exercise of having them come into all of those circumstances makes for a very interesting television.

Anything crazy that you have to confront this season?
I have a huge—huge!—surprise. I mean, I can’t tell you what it is. But it’s a big one.

I seriously hope it’s a good one because Arizona has been through a lot.
I know! I get so many people writing to me about that stuff. But I think people can honestly feel good about the fact that she’s going to be okay. I promise you in the end she is going to be just fine.

She’s such a strong character. What aspects of her personality have you most enjoyed cultivating?
I am quite in awe of this character’s resilience and her ability to weather storms and get through them and move on. I love it so much when they write it for her and I get to play it so much. But just the humor, and the redundant questions and the hilarity that you find in the middle of things that sometimes feel like despair.

You have four kids, and the oldest is now 10. Do they have any idea that you’re kind of a big deal?
The evolution of their understanding of what I do for a living has been really funny. At the beginning, all they think is that I work at a place where my dressing room is a trailer, which is pretty impressive to them, especially to my son who is impressed with trucks in general. Then, second to it being a trailer, came the fact that when you come to visit me, there’s craft services. So there are donuts, which they don’t see on the daily. Then, they started to discover that there are all of these fun people, who are also excited to see them. And then, their awareness grew. Two of the kids were out of town with their dad and there was a television playing Grey’s, and they saw me and said, “Whoa, what is mom doing there?” So they understand that I exist in this other world.

Your mom is also an actress. Did she impart any wisdom before you started this gig on Grey’s?
My mom is a fountain of wisdom. She has tons of experience and she’s just a really incredible person who knows a lot and shares a lot. She’s just the best. Along those lines, probably. I think she’s really proud. And I think she loves that I get to do something that I love.

What are you most excited for fans to see in the coming weeks?
The funny! I don’t want to say it’s back, because it’s not like it ever left, and the funniness but the comedy has definitely been clearly decided upon as a priority for the writers and it’s something that is living breathing and very vibrant in this season.

Anything about Arizona on Grey’s Anatomy?
Sure, everyone is thinking about Teddy’s return in terms of Owen, but let’s not forget that Teddy was actually BFFs with Arizona. “They pick up exactly where they left off,” Jessica Capshaw tells me. “They stayed friends. You are to imagine that, in Shondaland, they have remained friends ever since.” There’s even quite a hilarious scene in which they first reunite and Arizona realizes, well, she’s forgotten to update Teddy on a few things.

Making Sense of the Jam-Packed Season 14 Premiere

After Eliza (Marika Dominczyk) ghosted her, Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) got her groove back (again) — with Andrew's (Giacomo Gianniotti) Italian sister Carina (Stefania Spampinato), whose study about the female orgasm helped reveal Amelia's tumor.

Peppered in among all the twists and turns were several nods to the past — including multiple references to Mer's late mom Ellis (Kate Burton), and nods to George (T.R. Knight), Derek (Patrick Dempsey), Callie (Sara Ramirez) and a photo of Cristina (Sandra Oh) in a medical journal. The blasts from the past — and return to its classic humor — came from Krista Vernoff (Shameless), who returned to the ABC Shondaland medical drama as the co-showrunner after helping to launch Grey's as part of its core writing staff for its first seven seasons.

Below, Vernoff opens up about season 14's eventful start and where ABC's top drama goes next.

Arizona and Carina are really funny, together with Andrew. How will this relationship be different for Arizona?
This is a season of fun! And Carina brings so much fun! Because I am anti-spoiler, that's all I'm going to give you on that!

Grey’s Anatomy Season Premiere Recap: My Sister’s Keeper

Amelia is busy proving an inoperable tumor is in fact operable, much to the chagrin of Jackson, who refuses to help Amelia do something so dangerous, and DeLuca, who is trying to keep his superior in check while also dealing with his older OB-GYN sister. Oh, Carina DeLuca’s in town to hook up with Andrew’s roommate Arizona and perform a study at Grey Sloan that involves women masturbating in the MRI machine. DeLuca’s having a time.

• Funny Arizona is back and better than ever! She has the appropriate response to learning what being “ghosted” means, her reaction to seeing Teddy again is everything we could’ve hoped for, and she freely admits that she doesn’t know how to console someone who’s been fired because, well, she’s never been fired.

recap: 'Break Down the House/'Get Off on the Pain'

Bailey is addressing the staff as she stands on the stairs between the fourth and fifth floors, thanking them for keeping their heads during last night’s explosion, complete with crispy rapist. As she continues to rattle off the considerable damage done to our beloved hospital, Arizona and April chat about Minnick’s firing.

Arizona goes to Minnick’s apartment to check on her after her firing, only to find out that she’s ghosted — “no note, no text,” as she later explains to April in the cafeteria. Ouch — wonder if she can get that burn treated? But not to worry, because guess who’s back? Teddy (Kim Raver) is back, back again. And Arizona isn’t the only one who’s happy to see her. Owen is thrilled to see his old friend, who had gone back to military duty after her husband died. Teddy tells Owen she came back because of Megan, but we all know it’s because she still has feelings for him.

Nursing her breakup wounds, Arizona heads to Joe’s bar, where she meets a sexy brunette with an Italian accent, whom she winds up taking home.

Back at Arizona’s apartment, DeLuca is yelling in Italian at Arizona’s bar pick-up because, as it turns out, she’s his sister, Carina (Stefania Spampinato). They argue some more before he storms out. In true sister fashion, Carina tells Arizona that her brother’s real name is Andrea and not Andrew before they finish their romp on the couch.

As she’s walking through the hospital, Arizona is surprised to see Carina in Bailey’s office, but DeLuca, who happens to be walking by, explains that his sister is an OB-GYN. Turns out that Carina is there to ask Bailey if she can continue her funded study at Grey Sloan Memorial. The study looks at the role sex stimulation can play in pain control for women, and she wants to have women masturbate in their MRI machine so she can study their brains. Bailey, who is on a feminist tear over uncomfortable shoes and being the female chief of surgery, tells her emphatically, “Yes, DONE.”

Megan Hunt (Abigail Spencer) is back from the dead, Eliza Minnick (Marika Dominczyk) was fired by Bailey (Chandra Wilson) — as noted in an aside convo of Arizona’s (Jessica Capshaw)

My condolences to Arizona on being ghosted by Minnick, who just moved the fuck out without saying goodbye (this is not ghosting). That is ice cold, but what else could anyone possibly have expected from Minnick? That night, she meets an Italian woman who looks like Kate Middleton. Unfortunately, it’s DeLuca’s (Giacomo Gianniotti) sister. Love triangle? Kind of, but not that kind. Oh, and she’s an OBGYN who wants to study the female orgasm.
