A surgical residency is all about training for the worst. But, as prepared as we might be, we usually don’t see disaster coming. We can try to envision the worst-case scenario, to foresee catastrophe. But, when true disaster strikes, it often comes out of nowhere. And when the worst really does happen, we find ourselves completely blindsided. |

After Derek’s Death Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) is forced to tell the staff at Grey-Sloane Memorial Hospital that her husband, Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), is dead. After he is buried, she runs off — leaving everyone concerned about her well-being. However, we later find out that she is pregnant, giving Derek the last thing he ever asked her for: another child. Meredith walks into a break room where everyone inside — Callie, Dr. Pierce, Webber, Hunt, and even Alex — are all joking around and talking about their days as if everything is fine and normal. Because in their world everything is fine and normal. But then, Meredith walks in. She looks stunned, stupefied even, and doesn’t say a word for the first moment or so. They notice her there and someone even says something about how Derek’s flight was delayed, and that’s when Meredith speaks: “Derek is dead.” Unfortunately, they can’t hear her over all of their joking and she’s forced to repeat it, twice, until the world stops turning. Everyone in the room stops and stares at her in silence. There are more flashbacks of her mother’s suicide attempt, flashbacks of her relationship with Derek, and that’s when she hits the floor, passing out right in front of them. Then suddenly we’re at Christmas Eve and Callie is treating the hot cop she dated earlier in the season (and year). It’s clear he still has feelings for her, but Callie shuts him down pretty quickly. Back in Seattle, Callie breaks down over the loss of Derek when her patient, the hot cop named Dan, excels at using his prosthetic leg. She tells Dan about Derek and how he created the sensors being used to make his leg work, and how brilliant he was. It’s truly sad, and it shows that we’re going to be remembering Derek for a very long time. Hopefully. |

READY TO CRY? We Ranked All the Grey's Anatomy Deaths By How Hard They Made Us Cry: Is McDreamy No. 1? Shonda Rhimes, you are under arrest for crimes against the TGIT fandom. You have emotionally terrorized us for over 10 years...by killing off basically every character that has ever walked through the doors of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. The hospital is named after two dead main characters, for crying out loud! Your most recent offense? Shattering our hearts and crushing our souls by killing Dr. Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) in one of the most gut-wrenching and emotionally torturous episodes of television we've ever seen. What's the worst tragedy that the Grey's Anatomy doctors have had to survive? Let's look back on all the horrific events from least heartbreaking to most heartbreaking... and be prepared to cry all of the tears. Sniffle. 19. CALZONA BREAKS UP After going through a 30-day trial separation mandated by their couples therapist, Arizona realized how much she loved and needed Callie, but Callie came to the realization that she felt happier and free when she was alone, leading this fan-favorite couple to break up. It was shocking to see Callie pull the plug on their relationship, but seeing how liberated the newly-single Callie was, dancing around in her underwear for the first time in years, definitely softened the blow. 15. ARIZONA'S MISCARRIAGE You thought Arizona and Callie's life was heartbreaking enough after the car crash and plane crash? Well, we found out a season and a half later that after the plane crash, Arizona and Callie got Arizona pregnant so they could have another kid and put all their tough times behind them, but she miscarried. Seriously, how many tragedies can one couple take?! Calzona is certainly gunning for the record, huh? 7. CALLIE'S CAR CRASH OK, watching all the Grey's actors try and sing while still remaining dramatic and serious was a little bit hilarious, but watching Callie and her prematurely-born baby fight for their lives after that brutal car crash was so NOT. Thankfully both Callie and Sofia pulled through, but due to her injuries, Callie will never be able to get pregnant again. Will surrogacy be the answer to her problems in season 11? 3. THE PLANE CRASH As if these poor people haven't suffered enough, they had to endure an actual plane crash. An. Actual. Plane. Crash. Meredith, Derek, Cristina, Arizona, Mark and Lexie are left stranded in the woods for four days. Before they are even rescued, Lexie dies after Mark confessed his love for her, and then Mark almost dies multiple times before finally succumbing to his injuries back in the hospital. Arizona's leg is amputated due to her injuries (and she blames Callie for losing it and Alex for making her take his spot on the plane), Derek's hand is crushed and takes multiple surgeries to finally get it back to normal, and Cristina has her worst case of PTSD yet. |
