Sides for E11.17
OHN (30s Fireman) - Max comes running in to see his mother, (Doreen 70s) sitting up in bed wearing a robe and suffering some cuts and bruises. John is by her side. He explains that Doreen fell in the shower right through the glass door. Max asks if she slipped? He told her to put a support bar in there. She got dizzy. Dr. Smith questions her, dizzy huh? You had quite a fall. John explains that she’d been feeling dizzy all morning. Max tells John that he thinks the doctor has it from here. Doreen has to explain. John was with her when it happened. He was making breakfast. There is definitely some stunned surprise from Max. Are you two…seeing each other? John thought she’d told Max. Ha ha. Max asks John how old he is.
Later in the surgical waiting room Max approaches John. It seems Doreen has broken up with him due to Max’s reaction. John just needs to wait to make sure she’s okay. John tells Max that she told him a couple of times that he reminded her of Max. “Oh God, please don’t say that.” It’s weird. John just loved the way she looked at the world. A lot nicer than he did. It took John forever to get her to cut down that tree branch. Max is shocked that she finally cut it down at all. He’d been pestering her about it for years. Dr. Smith comes out. Doreen is out of surgery and doing great. John thanks her and goes to leave. Max stops him and tells him he can wait until she’s awake.
Doreen’s in bed, hooked up to monitors and when she wakes up she’s shocked to see John by her bedside. But she told him to go. Max said that she might be full of crap. Max asked him to stick around. Seems they have some stuff in common. They both went to the same high school. At the same time. Doreen is now flustered. She wishes John didn’t have to see her like this. Nope, she looks beautiful. Yep, these two are in love. (There are no sides for Max or Doreen. Please say it’s Tyne Daly…otherwise, it’s probably Owen’s mom.)
BIG OLD CHATTY GUY - An intern is giving a sponge bath to a very old, very chatty man. He’s going on about this amazing sandwich that had been on the menu for twenty years. It’s a taco, but on a hamburger bun. He ate it three days a week. And then one day he went in and it was gone. The intern nods along while asking him to turn over to get his other side. He’s oblivous to how disgusted the intern is.
DANNY (17) and KATHY (24) - Danny is very sick. He’s got congenital heart failure and is waiting for a new heart. His sister is his legal guardian. The doctor has been draining his heart from an infection, but he thinks they should try something new. It’s risky, but an operation might buy them some more time. Danny wants to do it, but Kathy is opposed. Later in she talks to his doctor. The surgery is risky. But all Danny wants to do is be normal. She thinks their parents would let him have the surgery. So she gives her approval. Unfortunately, he doesn’t survive.
MATT (40s) - Dr. Smith is presenting his ear transplantation procedure to a room full of interns who are amazed by the ear sewn to Matt’s arm. All right Matt, we’ll see you in the OR. “What?” Matt holds up his arm. Ha ha. Later, a nurse walks in and notices all of the discarded medical materials on his bedside table. The doctors just left it there. Animals. Matt shares his joke with her and she is not amused.
SURGICAL FELLOW - Is in the group with Renee and attempting to present work. It is clear that Dr. Jenkins isn’t interested.
Renee Collier (30 smart, attractive, nervous) — Renee stands in the back of a flock of eager, young, lab coated surgical fellows. Dr. Rogers stands behind his desk, shifting papers, listening to them report. He isn’t interested in the current project and he shuffles the papers until he comes across one and asks which one of them is doing the thing where you’re patch-clamping the heart muscle? This is Renee. Uh, that’s me. Who’s me? She tells him her name and he asks her how it’s going. She says fine, you? He meant the research. She’s hit a few bumps but is making progress. Dr. Rogers likes her project and wants to see what she’s doing. Everyone else is jealous.
Scene 2 - Research Lab, night — Dr. Rogers and Renee are looking into a double microscope while she tells him about her technique. One single cell, what made you develop this technique? It was a little side holiday. Renee wants to cure Cardiomyopathy. Why, 1 in 900 kids isn’t enough? Her little brother has it. He’s great and she loves him and she always wonders if he’ll live long enough to know that. Here’s to finding out.
Scene 3 - Resident’s Lounge Late — Renee is angry, frustrated and tearful. She throws her coffee cup into the sink and breaks it. Dr. Rogers interrupts and asks her if she’s okay. She apologizes about the cup. He’s not worried about the cup. He asks her if she wants to talk about it. She’s been measuring levels of activities in rat hearts for a year. She’s been patching and patching and patching looking for an abnormalities. And nothing. She’s been wasting her time. Dr. Rogers understands. You know why you feel this way, because you’re close. You’re very close to a break-through. You want it. You want to break through so bad you have to break something. She looks at him. He’s very persuasive, and it’s very dangerous here, all alone in this empty lab. Renee promises to replace the cup again. He tells her to stop talking about the cup. Keep going. You’re right on the line now. You’re going to cross it. Don’t stop. And this moment is so charged. It’s so much what he believes and what she wants. He turns to go and tells her she should get some sleep. She knows. He leaves and she may never sleep again. X

Quoting limited to 3 levels deep Sides for E11.17Spoiler: click to toggle OHN (30s Fireman) - Max comes running in to see his mother, (Doreen 70s) sitting up in bed wearing a robe and suffering some cuts and bruises.
OT: You'll Never Guess Who's Pairing up for Something "Groundbreaking" on Grey's Anatomy!
Amidst all the relationship drama happening on Grey's Anatomy right now, something very exciting is about to make its way to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital! When E! News caught up with Jerrika Hinton (who plays Stephanie Edwards on the ABC medical drama), she revealed that Stephanie is soon going to have bigger concerns on her plate than dealing with her ex Jackson (Jesse Williams) and April's (Sarah Drew) baby drama. "She's only involved [with that storyline] as in she's the bearer of bad news," Hinton says. "The rest of that journey is theirs to take, thankfully. She has other medical concerns to attend to within the hospital."
And what could those "other medical concerns" be? "Stephanie gets to be a part of something groundbreaking with someone you haven't seen her in too many scenes with before," Hinton reveals. "Stephanie's journey in the back half of the season, as it stands right now, I'm excited for it. It's been a while since I've been this excited because playing the jilted lover, that was something, but now I get to sink my teeth into something! And I love when I get to do research, and the things that Stephanie is involved with now…somehow or another Grey Sloan is always the place with groundbreaking medical discoveries. I don't know how that's case but it is!" This is hardly the first time Stephanie has been a part of some huge trial or research project, but Hinton teases that this upcoming discovery will be career-defining for her young doc.
"What I've realized is, in the tiny three years that she's been there, this has happened to Stephanie a lot," Hinton says with a laugh. "She got to be a part of Meredith's [Ellen Pompeo] 3D printing lab, she got to be a part of Bailey's [Chandra Wilson] genome project, and now she's going to get to be a part of this third gigantic thing."
She continues, "How does this girl have such a nose for this? How does she keep sniffing out these avenues that turn out to be so exciting and titillating in a really fantastic way? I don't know, but that's what's on deck for her, another gigantically groundbreaking surgical discovery." Hinton wonders if that's Stephanie's special skill, what makes her a truly stellar doctor: her ability to recognize what ideas and theories will be successful down the line.
"She's an innovator!" Hinton says. "I'm not sure if the writers are really tracking this about her, but from an acting point of view, it really does feel like that's what this girl's backbone and skill is, in a way. She wants the new thing. She wants to break new ground."
