Shonda Rhimes on Sara Ramirez's Grey's Anatomy Departure: 'I Had a Different Plan' for Callie

Callie’s move to New York City on Grey’s Anatomy wasn’t necessarily supposed to be a permanent one.

At the close of last Thursday’s season finale, Arizona presented her ex-wife with a new custody arrangement and plane tickets so Callie could follow girlfriend Penny to the Big Apple. But star Sara Ramirez’s final scene as a series regular after 10 seasons of playing Dr. Callie Torres wasn’t originally crafted with the intention of being her swan song.

Series creator Shonda Rhimes told the audience at Vulture Festival in New York City on Sunday that she “found out [about Ramirez’ decision] maybe three days before” the actress tweeted the news of her departure from the ABC drama — at which point the doc’s ending was already in the can.

Callie’s exit “was interesting. It was different because it wasn’t a big, planned thing,” Rhimes explained. “I had a different plan going and when Sara came and said, ‘I really need to take this break,’ I was sort of lucky that we had shot the end of the season with her going to New York.”

After last week’s finale, Ramirez released the following statement: “I’m deeply grateful to have spent the last 10 years with my family at Grey’s Anatomy and ABC, but for now, I’m taking some welcome time off. [Series creator] Shonda [Rhimes has] been so incredible to work for, and we will definitely continue our conversations. I send my love to Ellen [Pompeo], the rest of the cast and crew, and I look forward to always being a part of the Shondaland family!”

Rhimes, meanwhile, issued her own statement, saying, “Dr. Callie Torres came into our lives dancing it out in her underwear almost a decade ago, and I could not be happier or more proud of her journey. Sara Ramirez’s performance inspired me as well as millions of fans each week. We wish her the best on her well-deserved time off. I will miss Callie tremendously but am excited for what the future holds for Sara. She will always have a home at Shondaland.”

It’s a good thing Sara waited. Shonda would have probably killed Callie in a freak accident.

Maybe that’s is why she did it.

Just watched 12.24 and I’m glad Callie and Arizona worked it out. I’m glad Callie didn’t get killed off. But it didn’t feel like a solid enough good-bye. Hope Sara will be back in S13B.

Will miss Arizona and Callie. I was hoping they would reconcile. But after 10 years, Sara deserves a break. Callie will be missed.

Sara Ramirez Leaving ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ After More Than 10 Years

Posted Image

“Grey’s Anatomy” star Sara Ramirez, who plays Dr. Callie Torres on the long-running ABC medial drama, is leaving the show.

The news of her departure comes on the night of “Grey’s Anatomy’s” Season 12 finale.

“I’m deeply grateful to have spent the last 10 years with my family at ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ABC, but for now, I’m taking some welcome time off,” Ramirez said in a Twitter statement Thursday night. “Shonda’s been so incredible to work for and we will definitely continue our conversations! I send my love to Ellen [Pompeo], the rest of the cast and crew, and I look forward to always being a part of the Shondaland family!”

Shonda Rhimes, creator of “Grey’s Anatomy,” commented: “Dr. Callie Torres came into our lives dancing it out in her underwear almost a decade ago and I could not be happier or more proud of her journey. Sara Ramirez’s performance inspired me as well as millions of fans each week. We wish her the best on her well-deserved time off. I will miss Callie tremendously, but am excited for what the future holds for Sara. She will always have a home at Shondaland.”

Insiders tell Variety that leaving the show was truly Ramirez’s decision and that there was no bad blood behind the scenes.

Ramirez wrote that she is leaving “for now,” which suggests she may return to the show — and as stated in both Ramirez and Rhimes’ tweets, it appears that the door is open, should she want to return to “Grey’s Anatomy.”

Confirmation of Ramirez’s exit comes after the actress fueled speculation that she may be on her way out by posting a mysterious tweet last month, tweeting, “That’s a wrap for Doctor Callie Torres … Thank You all for an enriching & unforgettable rollercoaster ride!”

At the time of that post, Variety confirmed that the cast was in the midst of contract negotiations and that Ramirez has not yet closed her deal, which concludes this June.

Ramirez has been on “Grey’s Anatomy” for over 10 years. She first appeared in Season 2 and was upped to a series regular in Season 3.

Sara has too many talents to waste away as a background character.

If it's truly a contract issue, then I think we'll see her back sooner than later, perhaps midway in season 13B. I don't see how Grey's Anatomy can maintain their viewing number come the fall, but maybe they will.

'Grey's Anatomy's' Sara Ramirez: 5 Things You Didn't Know

In honor of her recent engagement, here's five little-known things about the actress.
This has been quite a year for Grey’s Anatomy and Tony-winning actress Sara Ramirez. She was featured in the first musical episode of the ABC show and then followed that up with the release of her first EP. And now she’s making it extra-memorable with a newly announced engagement. Ramirez and her longtime partner, Ryan Debolt, made it official while in Paris on June 17.

So, in honor of the news, we decided to tell you five things you didn’t know about Ramirez (and we hope her new fiancé does).

1.) You may have played her. In 1998, she voiced the character of Lammy in the video game UmJammer Lammy, a spin-off of PaRappa the Rapper, on Sony's PlayStation console. She then reprised the voice role in the PlayStation 2 video game sequel, PaRappa the Rapper 2.

2.) She and Wilson Cruz are tight. Ramirez and My So Called Life’s Wilson Cruz met while she was performing in The Capemen on Broadway in the late-nineties and they’ve been close friends ever since. This past season, the two had a chance to act together when Cruz guest starred on Grey’s.

3.) You knew her in Chicago. Or, maybe you didn’t. Ramirez was part of the female ensemble in the 2002 film starring Renee Zellwegger.

4.) She once suffered from deep depression. Ramirez told Latina Magazine that body issues and the loss of a close friend sent her into a depression, which began to affect her work on the ABC show.

“Somehow I managed to do it, but it wasn’t pretty,” she says. “There were days that I would show up to work and come out the side of my face to people who didn’t deserve it.”

5.) She hasn’t kicked the theatre bug. Being a TV star hasn’t helped the Tony-Award winning star get over her first love: Theatre.

"I consider New York and theater my home base, where I sort of grew up," she said. "I miss it and I hope they'll have me back whether it's a musical - it doesn't have to be on Broadway - or a play. I miss the theater, the whole symbiotic relationship between actor and audience and being on stage. The live factor."
