Jessica Capshaw Spends $10 Million in Pacific Palisades In December (2015), TV actress Jessica Capshaw announced she was pregnant with her fourth child. As our gurl Your Mama at Variety frequently reminds us, a new baby very often means a new house. And with only four bedrooms in her current home in Santa Monica (more on that one in a bit) Ms. Capshaw unsurprisingly quickly commenced a frantic house hunt. Ms. Capshaw, in case y’all didn’t know, is an Ivy League-educated lady whose first role on the small screen appears to have been an episode on the long-ago-cancelled medical drama ER. She then became a regular cast member on the also-long-ago-cancelled legal dramedy The Practice, portraying Jamie Stringer for a couple seasons in the early aughts. However, the role for which she is probably best-known is as lesbian doctor Arizona Robbins on the shockingly-successful medical melodrama Grey’s Anatomy. She’s portrayed the character for seven straight years and as such has most assuredly amassed a mountain of moolah from that plum role. Anyone out there feeling a bit salty? In addition to her aforementioned highly-lucrative TV roles, Ms. Capshaw is, of course, a Tinseltown scion by way of being the stepdaughter of billionaire luminary Steven Spielberg. And her entrepreneurial husband Christopher Gavigan is also the co-founder of The Honest Company, an extremely successful if controversial consumer products company perhaps best known for their bath and baby products. Side note: Yolanda has never met Mr. Gavigan or Ms. Capshaw, but we’re sure they’re nice enough people. However, Mr. Gavigan’s company has been much in the news lately for (allegedly!) doing some rather not-nice and downright deceptive things. We’ve never tried an Honest Company product – blessedly, Yolanda isn’t planning to pop a baby anytime soon – so we can’t vouch for how good/bad the thangs are. But accusations include that the company has profited handsomely by using fear and paranoia to market their products. Some outspoken critics even dare to say that perhaps a more suitable name for the firm would be “The Dishonest Company”! Well, we never! Anyway, with that brief ugliness out of the way, let’s focus on the matter at hand. Like a lot of rich, family-oriented couples on the Westside, the Capshaw-Gavigans were drawn to Pacific Palisades, specifically the low-key but fearsomely pricey “Riviera” section. Property records reveal the couple quietly shelled out a brutal $10,000,000 in an off-market deal for a not-yet-completed Cape Cod/shingle-style mansion on a prime corner lot. Since the deal was totally off-market, there are no photos available online (or if there are, we weren’t able to locate them), but your gurl did get in possession of a few snaps showing the home in its current state, a very-typical-for-the-neighborhood looking manse with a front-facing two-car garage and views of the Riviera Country Club (where the initiation fee is reported to be $250,000!) from the second floor. Some of Ms. Capshaw’s and Mr. Gavigan’s new neighbors in the high-priced Riviera ‘hood include Larry David, Dennis Quaid, Kate Hudson, Sam Raimi, Kevin Feige, and Molly Sims – who with her producer hubby Scott Stuber recently shelled out more than $13 million for their own big unfinished new manse. Of course, this is hardly Ms. Capshaw’s first house in LA. Way back in 1999, when she was just a wee lass of 23 years old and long before she hitched her wagon to Mr. Gavigan, she shelled out $965,000 for a small and privately-situated house (above) in that celebrity-stocked “Bird Streets” area of the Hollywood Hills. She sold the property in 2007, right about the time she popped her first bundle of joy, for something like $2,350,000 to Aimee Osbourne, the eldest and the only publicity-eschewing child of those crazy Osbournes (Miss Osbourne, incidentally, or her parents just sold the house a few months ago at a slight loss). That same year the couple shelled out $3,050,000 for their current more family-friendly abode in a good north-of-Montana area of Santa Monica. The couple extensively renovated their Spanish-style Santa Monica residence over a number of years and had it photographed in all its eco-friendly glory. That property contains 4 beds and 4 baths in just under 3,000 square feet of living space in the main house, plus a pool, spa, and firepit out back. There’s also a 950-square-foot guesthouse that Gavigan and Capshaw completely rebuilt and kitted out with three large skylights, four sets of French doors, a small kitchen, and a 60-inch flatscreen projector. There’s also – somewhat unconventionally – an outdoor copper shower with rainfall showerhead attached to a wall of the guest house. |

It is no secret that Shonda Rhimes knows how to cast her series with talented people, so it is no surprise that during their hiatus from their ABC series, they get cast in other projects. But when three of Shondaland’s performers wind up working on the same film, it is definitely a happy accident. The film in question is MarVista Entertainment’s Loserville, which stars Scandal‘s Darby Stanchfield, How to Get Away with Murder‘s Matt McGorry, and has Grey’s Anatomy alum Sara Ramirez as a producer. “It was offered to me by the director and the producers,” Stanchfield told Parade.com. “They came to me with the script. I didn’t learn about it through Sara. I came on board through this offer. She was collaborating with them around the same time, or maybe before, and then about the same time, Matt McGorry came on. When I found out about that, too, I was thrilled to be working with him.” “It is a really unique take on the teen movie genre, and it’s full of laughter,” Ramirez tells Parade.com of the film that marks her producing debut. “It’s very funny, and while it’s full of laughs, it’s also tackling really important issues like bullying, identity, and self-expression faced by teens today. I think it really will resonate, and it’s a very inclusive cast, I’m proud to say, and so I’m just really excited about it.” |

Grey's Anatomy's Jessica Capshaw Teases Arizona's New Love (It's Not Mer!), Reflects on Sara Ramirez' Exit After sitting out the first two episodes of Season 13 to spend a little extra time with her newborn daughter, Jessica Capshaw returns to Grey’s Anatomy this Thursday (ABC, 8/7c) and, man, does she hit the ground running. Not only is Arizona caught in the middle of the still-simmering Alex-Andrew drama (the former is her partner in pediatric crime and the latter is her roomie — awkward!), but she finds herself strapped into the driver’s seat of the episode’s main medical story. On the bright side, all the chaos leaves little time for her to dwell on the fact that her ex-love and baby mama Callie (Sara Ramirez) is now living 3,000 miles away in the Big Apple with their daughter Sofia. Below, Capshaw previews Arizona’s calamitous comeback, drops a hint about her new onscreen romance, and reflects on the departure of her longtime leading lady. TVLINE | You missed the first two episodes of the season. Did it feel like school had started without you? [Laughs] It did! It absolutely did. I was texting them, “What’s going on? What’s happening now?” They would still send me the scripts, though, so I remained tethered. TVLINE | Was it weird to come back and not have Sara there? Yes. To your analogy, it does feel like you’re going back to school, and there are things that are a bit different from the way they were before. But, obviously, [Sara leaving] was a bigger one. So definitely you feel the absence of any incredibly strong performer who is no longer there anymore. TVLINE | Did you know she wasn’t returning when you shot your last scene together in the finale? No, I did not. TVLINE | Do you feel like you need closure on the Callie/Arizona storyline? Or are you content with how it ended? I don’t know. It was left open-ended. In the Shondaland world, there is still a character named Callie who lives in New York City. But I don’t know what the closure is yet. TVLINE | The preview for this week’s episode confirms that Arizona is pissed at Alex for assaulting Andrew. Is there more going on there than her just looking out for her roommate? It’s funny, when I read the scripts that I wasn’t in, I felt like I wanted to know what Arizona was doing [when the Alex-Andrew melee went down]. Outside of Callie, Arizona has been closest to Alex. So I was kind of wondering if Alex would [reach out] to her. We find out in the episode that she heard what happened [while in NY], but she has no idea just how bad it is [until] she returns to work. And, when she sees just how bad it is, it really fires her up. And it worries her. Because anyone who can do something like that needs some help. Needs some assistance. [Laughs] TVLINE | Does she feel caught in the middle? She gets to sort of ride the middle. There’s an understanding that she might be able to both be upset at Alex and sad for Andrew. TVLINE | Shonda Rhimes has said Arizona will be getting a new love interest this season. What are your sources telling you about when we’ll meet her? [Laughs] My sources are telling me that it’s not going to be too far away. We had to wade through a little muck first. But I do feel that Arizona has certainly waited long enough. TVLINE | Is it going to be a new person or a character already on the show? I think it’s got to be a new person, right? What am I going to do, start making out with Ellen [Pompeo]? [Laughs] |

'Grey's Anatomy' Star Jessica Capshaw Opens Up About Sara Ramirez's Exit and Arizona's Future The actress talks with THR about how Ramirez's departure from the Shondaland drama at the end of season 12 was different from previous 'Grey's' exits as well as her hopes for Arizona. Dr. Arizona Robbins is back in the Grey's Anatomy house. Jessica Capshaw will return to the ABC medical drama Thursday, marking her first season 13 scene since Arizona was offscreen visiting New York and helping her daughter, Sofia, get settled with ex-wife Callie (Sara Ramirez) and girlfriend Penny (Samantha Sloyan), who both moved across the country. Below, Capshaw talks with THR about Grey's Anatomy without Ramirez, who departed after season 12; saying farewell to "Calzona"; and if there's any hope left for the fan-favorite couple as the Shondaland door remains open to the Tony-winning actress. How has it been filming this season without Sara Ramirez? She's such a tremendous actress. It's interesting because if you look at last season, we didn't work together that much. It's one of those things where I feel like in my heart, I can imagine in Shondaland that there's still a Callie and a Sofia and a Penny living in New York in some cute little apartment and that part of Grey's is still fine. There wasn't a tragedy. There's something original about that. The people who have left, they haven't always been sad but they've been bittersweet because you have seen them coming. But not seeing this one coming afforded everyone to feel like the character is still somewhere; she's just not there now. You didn't know last season that she was leaving when you filmed the season finale. Did you hear from her before or since she announced her departure? I didn't talk to her. It was a surprise. We all read her statement and it seemed like you could understand where she was coming from. It wasn't bittersweet or sad because it seemed very empowered and it was a choice. She was moving on but in what seemed like a grateful way, which was nice. Had you known Sara wasn't returning, was there anything you would have liked to have done differently, creatively speaking? I don't know! We're still in the midst of telling these stories that involve Arizona, and Arizona is still at the hospital and living that life. I think the relationship between Callie and Arizona was so hard-won and so magical — from their courtship to their marriage, and the accident and things that came and children and divorce — they very much earned the spot that they were in at the end of last season. So for there to be this horrible court situation where neither one of them knew how to be there for each other and the results and in the end, with Arizona being able to say, "This isn't who we are and let's not be these people — and you need to take Sofia and do what you want to do." It felt like an ending. That now Arizona can be in this world and freed up to have new relationships and new beginnings and people can champion that. Have you heard from her since the new season started? No, I haven't. Do you think there's still hope for a romantic reconciliation between Arizona and Callie? I don't know. Certainly, things have progressed and moved on and we now are in a space where I would very much hope we have all the opportunity in the world to make great stories for all the people who loved those characters together. We wouldn't all feel like unless they were together, no one would be happy. That would be too sad. There's too much fun to be had. With Callie in New York and everyone happy and settled there, how will we see Arizona start to put herself first this season? In this interim period, there was so much of Arizona throwing herself into work. I keep joking but I think it's true: Arizona is one of the most board-certified surgeons at the hospital when you think about all the specialties she has gone through. (Laughs.) Now that she's newly divorced and is throwing herself back into that world, she'll be a little more sure-footed. Again, no one has to feel bad for anyone being left and now we can move forward. There's real opportunity for fun and an energetic, excited, willing person. That is what I'm hoping for. Arizona is getting a new love interest. What will her dating journey look like this season? I can't see it being fast and easy like Callie. Or maybe it will be! Wouldn’t that be exciting? The beginnings of Callie and Arizona weren't steeped in some long, drawn-out or deep drama — it was fun and exciting and involved dancing. It was the light and excited beat music that played under all their scenes. I think it'd be great if that came back now. What have you heard about Arizona's new love interest? Is this someone in the medical field? I don't know what the character will be, but I'm guessing and think it will be someone who has a great amount of confidence and excitement. I have a feeling it will be very nice for them to have that quid pro quo and lively exchange and banter. It would help if there was a heat to it. I hope it's fun, sexy and exciting. Why would you do it otherwise?! Arizona is Alex's mentor. How will she respond to what he's done? It's ripe for contradiction and conflict for her. There was empathy, camaraderie and compassion with her roommate, Andrew. At the same time, she has a deep relationship with Alex, as a mentor, friend and confidant. Ultimately, when she first comes back, she didn't understand how bad it was for Andrew until she sees him. It's hard to reconcile that and it's a little scary when someone you know so well does something so primal and unacceptable. There's got to be so many different things you feel at the same time. Arizona is very connected to the empathy she had for Andrew and him being new and not having his people in place yet. And getting the shit kicked out of him, it's awful. DeLuca is Arizona's roommate. Will she get stuck in the middle at all between her two main people? I don't know how all this will end up playing out. By the end of Thursday's episode, you see from Alex that perhaps having Arizona come back is the last in a long chain of friends who have come and said, "You really messed this up and you did a horrible thing and you need to work your way back from it." At the end of this episode, he says he'll do whatever he can and Arizona believes him. She will be there for him through that. Who will she lean on the most this season? I'm hoping there will be another person for her to play off of as another option for camaraderie. Last year with the chief [James Pickens Jr.] and Arizona was hysterical and fun to play out. There's also the drama with April and this year I've gotten to work more with Camilla Luddington, which has been fun. What are you looking forward to seeing from Arizona this season? Sound off in the comments section, below. |
