'Grey's Anatomy' Star Jessica Capshaw on Arizona's Journey In 2009, Dr. Arizona Robbins skated her way onto "Grey's Anatomy" with a positive attitude and a determination to save the lives of children. Even though Arizona initially only had a three-episode storyline on the show, Jessica Capshaw has been playing the character ever since--through both incredible highs and heartbreaking lows. During Capshaw's first few episodes on the show, series creator Shonda Rhimes saw the potential for something more. "Shonda had this idea that my character could present a storyline for Callie [Torres, played by Sara Ramirez]. It was an experiment to see what worked," Capshaw told NBC OUT. "It just kind of kept working." The relationship between Arizona and Callie became one of the most beloved on the series. Not only because of the visibility of a lesbian and a bisexual woman making a relationship work, but also because the two had so much fun on screen. The relationship was dubbed "Calzona" and fans followed the couple for many seasons. One of Capshaw's fondest memories from the show was a scene at the beginning of their courtship where the two were dancing. Their relationship, which endured several hurdles, among them an unexpected pregnancy, was incredible for fans of the series to watch. Viewers followed the couple from the initial meeting in a bar bathroom all the way through to their walk down the aisle. Unfortunately, their relationship did not have the happiest of endings. Infidelity, traumatic events and growing apart led to divorce. ![]() Jessica Capshaw and Sara Ramirez as Arizona Robbins and Callie Torres repsectively on "Grey's Anatomy" episode "White Wedding." One relationship that has lasted nearly as long as Arizona's with Callie is her mentorship of Alex Karev (Justin Chambers). The character started out as an angry and guarded person and has shown incredible growth -- some of which must be credited to Arizona. While Arizona's relationships are important, it's the events on "Grey's Anatomy" that changed the character the most. Professional opportunities, personal struggles and traumatic experiences have put Arizona through the wringer, so to speak. In fact, the character lost her leg after being in a plane crash several seasons ago. While Arizona is still a positive person, her challenging past experiences remind her of the reality of the world. "It's been a really nice evolution," Capshaw shared. Last season saw Arizona moving forward with her life after Callie. She moved in with new character Dr Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) and began an amazing new friendship with James Pickens Jr's Dr. Richard Webber. Arizona and Richard brought fans to tears with their blossoming friendship last year. "The fact that he became her wingman in bars was too funny," she said, "and it clearly really worked." While there were hard times, including seeing Callie date again and a tough custody battle, in the end Arizona and Callie learned to make their "new normal" work. Unfortunately fans will not see that play out, because Sara Ramirez revealed she would be leaving the series after a decade. With Callie off in New York with her new girlfriend, Arizona can truly move forward in Seattle without any tethers. Capshaw makes her return in the third episode of the new season, after being on maternity leave, and she is in quite a tough spot. Arizona comes back to Seattle to deal with her roommate, Dr. DeLuca, being viciously attacked by her close friend, Dr. Karev. "It is a very challenging situation to be in, especially since she just got back." On the romantic front, things are looking better for Arizona. Shonda Rhimes has revealed the character will finally have a new love interest. And now that Callie is out of the picture, Arizona can "double down on who and what she wants," Capshaw said. "Who know what that will be? She's been married and has a child. I don't know that it needs to be something super serious." Whatever it is, Capshaw is hopeful when looking at the future of Arizona on "Grey's Anatomy." "The beginning of something is so interesting and nuanced. There's nothing like it," she added. "Now she get to be free and free to find new things -- new adventures and new love," Capshaw said. "Whatever happens next for Arizona will be lovely, right and exactly as it she should be." |

Grey’s Anatomy Recap: Do You Believe in Miracles? The bright light amid all of this romantic angst is Arizona Robbins. AZ is back from NYC, where apparently all is well and good with Callie, Dr. Snooze, and Sofia. Also, everyone's brains have been wiped so nobody remembers how badly that story line was botched last season. EXCEPT FOR ALL OF US. We'll never be able to forget, no matter how great the view of Central Park is from Callie's apartment. Regardless, having Arizona back in the hospital is a breath of fresh air. She has a different perspective on the Alex-DeLuca situation since she is DeLuca's landlord and basically shaped Alex into the good man and defender of tiny humans we know him to be today. She loves Alex, and when she lectures him about throwing his career away, it's definitely fueled by sadness and disappointment, not just anger. On the flip side, Arizona cares about DeLuca, too. DeLuca assumes Arizona will be definitively #TeamAlex and tell him to move out for what he's putting her friend through. This poor guy is obviously scared and alone, so Arizona pulls him in for a roomie hug. It's a great scene and I didn't realize how much I missed Jessica Capshaw until that hug happened. The kindest landlord in all the world! Arizona also offers an optimistic take on the big case of the week. Let's talk about the Fisher family for a moment, shall we? Arizona may not be ready to forgive her own complete disaster, but she does find Alex to make sure he knows how much she missed him in the OR. She needed him, and more important, the patients deserve a doctor like him. He's mad at himself, too. And as much as he wants to give up and walk away, he's staying put. He's going to do whatever it takes to get his job back — and that is the person Arizona raised. Yeah, it's really good to have Arizona back. *Webber is so excited to see Arizona hop off that elevator! Get those two to a lesbian trivia night, STAT. |

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Star Sara Ramirez Comes Out As Bisexual She opened up about her sexuality while speaking on behalf of homeless LGBT youth. Broadway and television actress Sara Ramirez opened up about her sexuality while speaking at a Saturday seminar for homeless LGBT youth. The 41-year-old “Grey’s Anatomy” star used her Oct. 8 appearance at the True Colors Fund’s 40 to None Summit in Los Angeles, California, to come out publicly as a “queer, bisexual” woman. “So many of our youth experiencing homelessness are youth whose lives touch on many intersections – whether they be gender identity, gender expression, race, class, sexual orientation, religion, citizenship status,” she said in her speech, which can be viewed in the video above. “Because of the intersections that exist in my own life: woman, multi-racial woman, woman of color, queer, bisexual, Mexican-Irish American, immigrant, and raised by families heavily rooted in Catholicism on both my Mexican and Irish sides, I am deeply invested in projects that allow our youth’s voices to be heard.” Ramirez, who nabbed a Tony Award in 2005 for her role in the Broadway musical “Spamalot,” reiterated those remarks in a tweet posted Saturday. The actress told The Huffington Post in an email Monday that her decision to come out publicly at the event was a “very organic and natural” one. “It made sense for me at this time as it was one piece of a larger context I was communicating,” she told HuffPost. “Our most marginalized youth touch on many intersections, and in describing the concept of inter sectionalities, I decided to describe the ones that exist in my own life.” She went on to note, “The days of pressuring our LGBTQ youth to conform to one homogenized way of presenting LGBTQ are over. We must acknowledge and maintain awareness around their complex narratives.” The True Colors Fund, the New York-based homeless LGBT youth advocacy group, quickly tweeted its support for Ramirez on Saturday. Ramirez, who is married to business analyst Ryan DeBolt, offered similar praise for the organization, which was co-founded by Cyndi Lauper. “I’ve witnessed serious hypocrisy in spaces that claim to be for equality, but the True Colors Fund is the real deal. They don’t just talk the talk. They walk the walk,” she told HuffPost. The actress has been an outspoken advocate for the LGBT community for some time, and has appeared in Spanish-language PSAs for GLAAD. Her “Grey’s Anatomy” character, Callie Torres, tied the knot with a fellow doctor in a same-sex wedding on a 2011 episode of the show. In 2009, she launched a foundation in honor of her best friend, Al D. Rodriguez, a gay actor-singer from New York who died of cancer. Congrats, Sara, on living an authentic life ― and using your voice to generate conversation around an often-overlooked subset of the LGBT community! |

Grey's Anatomy's Jessica Capshaw Teases Leah's "Dramatic" Return With Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) single and ready to mingle on Grey's Anatomy, once news broke earlier this week that her former (brief) love interest Leah (Tessa Ferrer) was returning to the show, it didn't take long for Grey's fans to put two and two together and speculate that the two women might rekindle the flame. But don't jump to that conclusion too quickly. According to Capshaw, Arizona's romantic life may take some unexpected turns this season. "A love interest certainly doesn't mean necessarily a huge relationship," Capshaw tells TVGuide.com. "It kind of just means exactly that. I think there's an opportunity for there to be some really fun, flirty, exciting, sexy stuff that comes up for [Arizona]. And that's fun." See what else Capshaw has to say about Leah's big return (which happens in Episode 6, airing Oct. 27), as well as how Arizona's feeling about the conflict between DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) and Alex (Justin Chambers), in our Q&A below: We heard the big news this week that Tessa is coming back. What was your reaction when you heard? Jessica Capshaw: Tessa's awesome. She's such a fun, neat, kind, talented, awesome person. So we were all just super psyched to have her back and telling more stories. And the way she comes back is very cool and sort of dramatic, so that was great too. It was super exciting for all of us. Is it possible for her to rekindle her romance with Arizona? Arizona broke things off because she was trying to reunite with Callie (Sara Ramirez) at the time, and obviously that's no longer an issue. Capshaw: There's definitely drama to be had. The way that they left it, [Arizona] broke it off and the Leah character... I don't know if she turned crazy, but she was upset by the turn of events, so she kind of went after all of the attendings for the shenanigans, the little affairs, that happen all the time between attending and the residents. There was definitely drama to that, and I think that probably Arizona felt really guilty about all of that. So I think it's definitely, definitely surprising to [Arizona] that she's back. Hopefully Leah has grown a little bit as a person since we saw her last. Capshaw: One would hope, yes. No boiling bunnies. Do we see [Arizona] going on dates with other people besides Leah? Capshaw: No dates so far. I think [it's] more just setting the tone at the beginning part of this season that there is a lightness to her, coming back from New York and situating Callie and Sofia and Penny, and not feeling bad or guilty or terrible about any of that. Existing in this alternate universe where everyone's happy sort of frees [Arizona] up to play her own life a little bit more unfettered. So I think that it's an exciting time to her. I think the sky's the limit. She could do anything, or nothing. I'm not really sure if it's just going to be that Arizona is the kind of person who has a bunch of little relationships, or if she's interested in being in a big relationship again. I feel like when we were setting the groundwork for the character in the beginning, it was sort of a story point that Arizona was, you know, a bit... playful. [Laughs] A bit meandering, and not necessarily pinned down. She's definitely had the wedding, been married. ... You remember it being a really big surprise that Arizona didn't want to have kids at all. So I think there was this whole base for her personality and her sense of self that was kind of free. If we do see her going on dates, will Webber (James Pickens Jr.) still act as her wingman? Capshaw: I mean, obviously. There's no one better. [Laughs] Arizona's clearly feeling very conflicted about the DeLuca/Karev thing. How do we see that conflict play out in the next few episodes? Capshaw: Ultimately, what Arizona believes is that both are really good guys. But I think that during the course of her lifetime and certainly her story on the show... they're all adults and I think that they all know that, no matter how good a person you are, you can make a really big mistake. Obviously the fallout was physical and awful. But I think that ultimately, you're going to see all these characters figure out how to repair, and hopefully the repair will be, satisfyingly, full of friction and coming together again. As the doctor who works most closely with Karev, will Arizona play any role in Bailey's (Chandra Wilson) decision about whether to bring him back? Capshaw: Not so far, but we haven't gotten into that part of the story yet. |
