Sides for E11.17 Filming dates: Feb. 5 -19. Renee Collier (30 smart, attractive, nervous) — Renee stands in the back of a flock of eager, young, lab coated surgical fellows. Dr. Rogers stands behind his desk, shifting papers, listening to them report. He isn’t interested in the current project and he shuffles the papers until he comes across one and asks which one of them is doing the thing where you’re patch-clamping the heart muscle? This is Renee. Uh, that’s me. Who’s me? She tells him her name and he asks her how it’s going. She says fine, you? He meant the research. She’s hit a few bumps but is making progress. Dr. Rogers likes her project and wants to see what she’s doing. Everyone else is jealous. Scene 2 - Research Lab, night — Dr. Rogers and Renee are looking into a double microscope while she tells him about her technique. One single cell, what made you develop this technique? It was a little side holiday. Renee wants to cure Cardiomyopathy. Why, 1 in 900 kids isn’t enough? Her little brother has it. He’s great and she loves him and she always wonders if he’ll live long enough to know that. Here’s to finding out. Scene 3 - Resident’s Lounge Late — Renee is angry, frustrated and tearful. She throws her coffee cup into the sink and breaks it. Dr. Rogers interrupts and asks her if she’s okay. She apologizes about the cup. He’s not worried about the cup. He asks her if she wants to talk about it. She’s been measuring levels of activities in rat hearts for a year. She’s been patching and patching and patching looking for an abnormalities. And nothing. She’s been wasting her time. Dr. Rogers understands. You know why you feel this way, because you’re close. You’re very close to a break-through. You want it. You want to break through so bad you have to break something. She looks at him. He’s very persuasive, and it’s very dangerous here, all alone in this empty lab. Renee promises to replace the cup again. He tells her to stop talking about the cup. Keep going. You’re right on the line now. You’re going to cross it. Don’t stop. And this moment is so charged. It’s so much what he believes and what she wants. He turns to go and tells her she should get some sleep. She knows. He leaves and she may never sleep again. OHN (30s Fireman) - Max comes running in to see his mother, (Doreen 70s) sitting up in bed wearing a robe and suffering some cuts and bruises. John is by her side. He explains that Doreen fell in the shower right through the glass door. Max asks if she slipped? He told her to put a support bar in there. She got dizzy. Dr. Smith questions her, dizzy huh? You had quite a fall. John explains that she’d been feeling dizzy all morning. Max tells John that he thinks the doctor has it from here. Doreen has to explain. John was with her when it happened. He was making breakfast. There is definitely some stunned surprise from Max. Are you two…seeing each other? John thought she’d told Max. Ha ha. Max asks John how old he is. Later in the surgical waiting room Max approaches John. It seems Doreen has broken up with him due to Max’s reaction. John just needs to wait to make sure she’s okay. John tells Max that she told him a couple of times that he reminded her of Max. “Oh God, please don’t say that.” It’s weird. John just loved the way she looked at the world. A lot nicer than he did. It took John forever to get her to cut down that tree branch. Max is shocked that she finally cut it down at all. He’d been pestering her about it for years. Dr. Smith comes out. Doreen is out of surgery and doing great. John thanks her and goes to leave. Max stops him and tells him he can wait until she’s awake. Doreen’s in bed, hooked up to monitors and when she wakes up she’s shocked to see John by her bedside. But she told him to go. Max said that she might be full of crap. Max asked him to stick around. Seems they have some stuff in common. They both went to the same high school. At the same time. Doreen is now flustered. She wishes John didn’t have to see her like this. Nope, she looks beautiful. Yep, these two are in love. (There are no sides for Max or Doreen. Please say it’s Tyne Daly…otherwise, it’s probably Owen’s mom.) BIG OLD CHATTY GUY - An intern is giving a sponge bath to a very old, very chatty man. He’s going on about this amazing sandwich that had been on the menu for twenty years. It’s a taco, but on a hamburger bun. He ate it three days a week. And then one day he went in and it was gone. The intern nods along while asking him to turn over to get his other side. He’s oblivous to how disgusted the intern is. DANNY (17) and KATHY (24) - Danny is very sick. He’s got congenital heart failure and is waiting for a new heart. His sister is his legal guardian. The doctor has been draining his heart from an infection, but he thinks they should try something new. It’s risky, but an operation might buy them some more time. Danny wants to do it, but Kathy is opposed. Later in she talks to his doctor. The surgery is risky. But all Danny wants to do is be normal. She thinks their parents would let him have the surgery. So she gives her approval. Unfortunately, he doesn’t survive. MATT (40s) - Dr. Smith is presenting his ear transplantation procedure to a room full of interns who are amazed by the ear sewn to Matt’s arm. All right Matt, we’ll see you in the OR. “What?” Matt holds up his arm. Ha ha. Later, a nurse walks in and notices all of the discarded medical materials on his bedside table. The doctors just left it there. Animals. Matt shares his joke with her and she is not amused. SURGICAL FELLOW - Is in the group with Renee and attempting to present work. It is clear that Dr. Jenkins isn’t interested. X
Sides for E11.18 Filming Dates: Feb 18 - 27.
The main set-up in these sides is that Dr. Walters is leading a class around the hospital on a school field trip and the kids see all kinds of bad stuff but are mostly cool with it all and excited.
AJ (STUDENT) - Dr. Walters leads a group of students around the hospital. And here’s Dr. Houston. She’s a surgeon. The kids are intimidated. Dr. Houston explains that being a surgeon means she fixes people who are hurt. COOL. AJ asks Dr. Walters what he does there and Dr. Houston changes the subject to show the field trip kids how to measure a man’s pulse. AJ points to a defibrillator. And that’s what you use if someone dies? They can use that if your heart stops. To shock it back into beating again. AJ wants to try it. Another student tells him no stupid. You’d die.
BRETT (PATIENT) - Dr. Hall and Dr. Jenkins work on Brett, moving fast. He’s a fit young man who is barely conscious in bad shape, and blood is everywhere. How’s he doing? Brett tries to speak and blood gushes everywhere. Dr. Hall puts pressure on the wound and speaks calmly. Don’t try to talk right now. We’ve got you.
MARCY (TEACHER) - She’s whispering with Dr. Walters who is guiding a group of students around the hospital. Dr. Walters tells her that they can finish the tour, but he understands if she doesn’t want to. She thinks they’re fine. Look at them. She herds them around a CT Scanner for a picture.
JULIE (STUDENT) - Julie is with her classmates, her teacher and her mom Susan. They’ve just seen a patient gurgling blood get taken to the OR. They’re crowded around the be. Dr. McCoy has a fingertip monitor on a kid and they’re watching the pulse on a monitor. Dr. McCoy explains that the monitor allows them to see how fast your heart is beating. Julie asks, and when you die, the lines go flat? Uh, yes if your heart stops beating…Any questions about the CT? Julie raises her hand and asks a follow-up about the man who was hit by the car. If he was gurgling blood, can he breath, is he going to die? Dr. McCoy kneels down and tells her that he might. But they’re going to do everything they can to prevent that from happening. Later on in a hospital conference room Dr. McCoy and Julie watch a video of surgery. It’s a bit graphic, but Julie is morbidly curious. That man died? Yes. They’re taking all of his parts out? He’s an organ donor. Wow, I want to do that. Be a donor? Nope, she wants to take the parts out. How does she get to do that? Lots of school. And lots of practice. Julie asks Dr. McCoy if he’s a surgeon. Yes he is. Cool. Then she goes back to the surgery, amazed at all of the different pieces that are being removed. This is the coolest thing she’s ever seen.
SUSAN (JULIE’S MOM) - Susan whispers to Dr. Walters who’s about to present a CT Scanner to the group of field trip kids who’ve just seen a horrifying scan of a broken leg. She wonders if they should just take the kids back to school. Dr. Walters looks around at the kids who all appear to be fine. Julie asks her question and the kids gasp. Later in radiology, Dr. Walters is running a medical slide show for the kids who are fascinated. Pretty neat right? Just a second, Dr. Walters thinks he has a picture of a water bottle stuck in a man’s stomach. Susan isn’t sure that’s appropriate. Oh, it’s fine. We got the bottle out. She still isn’t sure, but he pops the image on screen and all of the kids scream and laugh. They love it. Suddenly, Susan notices that Julie is missing. Where is Julie?
OFFICER CURTIS - He’s with Susan, who’s approaching full blown panic since her child is missing. She was last seen in the CT Room. What if someone took her? That would be unlikely. Does Susan have a picture? Yes she does. From that morning. That’s what she was wearing. Send it to him and he’ll send it around to his guys. They’ll find her. Just then a nurse brings Julie around the corner.
NICK (TEACHER or PARENT) - He’s one of the adults leading a school field trip, no age or description is provided in the side. He is in a stairwell and runs into a nurse. Apparently, he’s lost all of his kids, 10 of them, six graders. She thinks they’re in radiology. He starts to go and then asks her if she happens to know where that is. The nurse smiles and leads the way.
Later that night the nurse is charting and sees them heading out. She calls out to Nick who is happy to have the chance to say goodbye although it needs to be quick – he’s not losing those kids again. Right then the elevator begins to close with the kids in it and he starts to run after them but the nurse stops him. Wait. She could be totally off base but they kind of had a vibe together. Didn’t they? Nick completely blushes. Uh, no, she’s not off base at all. The nurse is happy and asks Nick if he wants to get together. Nick is completely floored. Uh, yeah, yeah, you really want to? Yes she does. Drinks? He doesn’t drink. Okay. Coffee? Coffee’s great. He’s all about the coffee. Perfect. She’s free Friday. Friday, yes. He’s sorry, but he can’t believe she really wants to go out with him.
Pete – Dr. Kimble assesses Pete, a fireman who is injured. An intern is there. Pete’s awake but struggling. Blood seeps from his chest and abdomen. The intern explains that they pulled the kids out of the fire when a beam fell on Pete here. It happened so fast. Try not to move your neck Pete, okay? Pete asks if they’ve brought in Brett yet. Dr. Kimble explains that he’s being worked on right next door. He okay? He took the brunt of it. Brett…saved it…Dr. Kimble tells Brett that they’re going to cut into his chest. It’s the only way to help him breathe. It’ll hurt like hell, but it’s the only way, okay? Pete nods and grabs Dr. Kimble’s hand. Ready? He nods and then screams.
Dr. Kimble works on Pete who wears an oxygen mask. Sharon, his mother, hovers next to the bed stroking his hair. Dr. Kimble asks Pete how he’s doing? Pete moves the mask and tries to force a smile. Thinking of going for a run. Sharon smiles - this one, always the wise guy. Dr. Kimble hangs a bag of blood. Sharon notices and gives off a bit of a shudder. Pete squeezes her hand. Remind you of that trip to the ER when I got hit by the pitch? You didn’t even try to get out of the way. Nothing changes, right? I gotta learn to duck. As Dr. Kimble prepares the tube Pete waves him away, give him a minute with his mom. Mom, you remember that potluck we did a few years ago, with all of the guys in the backyard? When we get out of here we should do that again, but bigger – more people. We’ll invite these doctors. Everyone loved it. Okay honey. Sure. He continues. We were going to make it like an annual thing, remember? And we never did. We should do that. Aghhh. Pete? Peter? And just as suddenly Pete starts to arrest and the doctors rush in.
Sides for E11.19 Filming dates: Feb. 27 - Mar. 11.
JOHANNA (40) tigerish and MARISSA MCKAY (16) - She’s athletic. A good kid – Dr. Mendez is there to talk to Marissa. So, Marissa has been complaining about severe lower back pain? Joanna explains that Marissa is one of the best squash players in the country. Dr. Mendez plays racket ball at the gym sometimes. It’s really fun…yeah well, racket ball is for middle-age wannabes who need to work out their aggression. Squash is an art. Mom, they don’t care. Marissa, your x-ray shows a severe misalignment of your spine. You’ve been playing through the pain? Joanna explains that Marissa loves squash, it’s her life. She’s ranked #2 in the nation and hasn’t lost a match in over 4 years. She’s up for 5 different athletic scholarships. FIVE. She’s going to have her pick of any college she wants. She must love it to push through that kind of pain. Dr. Mendez clocks a quick downward glance by Marissa – she might not be as gung-ho as her mother’s making it out. Dr. Mendez can help Marissa though, right? She needs to do a few more tests before they can come up with a plan of attack.
Waiting room – Dr. Mendez provides Joanna with a post-operation update on Marissa’s surgery. She’s so sorry. They did all they could to fix Marissa’s spine. You said you could fix her. Dr. Mendez says that she told her that they would try. She really thought her approach would give Marissa the best shot— But it didn’t. It made things worse. YOU made things worse. The damage to your daughter’s spline was extensive. With therapy, she should be able to walk again, even run…EVEN run. Sports are out. Now. Squash is out. Dr. Mendez knows she’s disappointed. But she’ll be alive. She will be mobile. But she won’t be who she was. This was everything to her. She has worked so hard. She wants to go to college. She wants to do things with her life, and Johanna can’t… she works three jobs just to keep up with her uniforms and practices and coaching. She can’t send Marissa to school, not a good one. She has the grades to get into Harvard but Johanna doesn’t have the money. The scholarships were her only chance. A chance Johanna can never give her. Now, everything is gone. Because of Dr. Mendez. She should have told Johanna that she couldn’t do this. If she’d been honest FROM THE START, they could have left and found a different surgeon who could fix her. Given the severity of her spinal condition, any surgeon would have. Stop it. Stop talking to me – just go away. I can’t do this right now. I can’t talk to you.
Marissa’s ICU Room Day – Dr. Mendez examines Marissa, who is awake after her operation. Ok Marissa, I need to take a look at your back. Marissa knows something is wrong. Her mother hasn’t looked her in the eye since the surgery. Just tell her the truth. Is squash out? For good? Probably yes. It’s too dangerous. You could paralyze yourself too easily if something happened. I see. You okay? Marissa doesn’t know. She really did love it. And she was pretty good. She doesn’t really know who she is without it. Dr. Mendez tells her that It’s hard. When the thing you’ve loved for such a long time is taken away from you. I’m sorry. What if she’s not good at anything else…Or, or. She doesn’t find something she loves like that again? Marissa. I promise you. You will find something else. Marissa nods, hoping Dr. Mendez’s words to be true.
MARCIA (35) – Thomas’s patient room. He’s awake but still groggy. Marcia, his wife, stands in the doorway. Baby? He turns to see Marcia. Thomas is contrite and not at all menacing. Marcia… you’re here. She’s been so worried about Thomas. She wasn’t sure if Thomas would want her to come. Thomas is so sorry. He knows that they had an agreement. Waitresses and hostesses were okay. Nothing else…Marcia is nodding. Blinking back tears. She’s his sous chef! He knows. He knows. It’s not okay. He’s sorry. No baby. She’s sorry. Marcia flies over to Thomas. She tenderly puts her arms around him as they kiss and make up.
RORY – She’s the infamous sous chef. She is getting a gash on her face cleaned up. She is agitated and angry. It’s a hell of a gash, did Marcia do this too? No. Sort of. She’s the one who found Thomas. At first she didn’t realize anything was wrong. She’s usually the first to arrive at the restaurant. She gets there early and checks the proteins. Then she went to drop her knives at her station and…there he was. Lying on the floor in a pool of blood. He wasn’t moving and she didn’t know if he was alive or daed. She ran over. It was slippery and she fell too. She hit her face on the induction range. Marcia’s a criminal.
Later that night in a patient room. Rory is hurt. Defeated. Dr. Katz enters. Why did you…Rory saved Thomas’s life. Why did she stab him in his hospital bed? She was the reason they got the James Beard nomination. They created the award winning recipe together. She was more than his sous chef. Thomas said she was his heart. They were going to open another restaurant together. As co-chefs. He said he’d leave Marcia. Rory believed him. She believed IN HIM. But Marcia stabbed Thomas and he still took her back! So she decided to kill him? God help her. She still loves him.
CHRISTIE – Patient Taylor is awake (currently there are no sides for Taylor who has Asperger’s Syndrome) Taylor woke up and Christie wasn’t there. She had to get the kids from school. But Taylor didn’t know she she’d come back. You like your kids better. I know that. Taylor, stop that. I’m here. I’m staying here…Taylor doesn’t like her kids. They don’t like Taylor either. Christie ignores that comment to explain that she got there as soon as she could. So, who cares? Taylor doesn’t. Taylor doesn’t care. Dr. Mitchell walks in and asks if everything is okay there? Christie stops him. It’s fine Taylor? Taylor won’t look at her. Christie knows that Taylor doesn’t feel good, but it’s not okay to take it out on her. She’s going to step outside and give him a chance to calm down. At least until you can stop being mean.
Waiting Room, night – Dr. Mitchell sits next to Christie who looks upset. What you’re doing for Taylor is very kind. Yeah, well. But for what it’s worth, you have a family waiting at home. You don’t have to put up with someone speaking to you that way. She’s not…she’s not going to stop being her friend because she’s sick. And in a strange place. And having a bad day. Of course not, but you could at least go home for the night? Dr. Mitchell can keep an eye her. Christie shakes her head. Dr. Mitchell doesn’t understand. When they were in high school Christie got really sick. For almost a year she was either in the hospital or trapped at home. Friends came to visit at first, but then they got too busy. But every day Taylor came to see her. Every single day. For a year. She was 16 years old. Who does that? What 16 year old does that? She was Christie’s life line. She was there when no one else was. Every day. She stayed by my side. The things that make her say those words are the same things that make her so amazing. She’s persistent and fearless and honest and…so sincere. It’s why they’re friends, it’s why she would trust her with her life and it’s why Christie is there. She’s showing up for her. And she is never walking away. Ever.

Grey's Anatomy: What's next for Callie and Arizona?

Mark Sloan’s presence will loom over Grey’s Anatomy this week as Callie (Sara Ramirez) takes a step toward moving on from Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) by returning all of her stuff—including a wedding present from their late friend that actually becomes a point of contention.
“It’s baby steps towards being in a relationship that’s full of mutual respect, kindness, generosity, love and partners in sharing a child,” Capshaw tells EW, noting that Callie and Arizona haven’t had many conversations outside of work. “When this incident comes up, there’s actually something else to deal with, so they go back to having to relate to each other in the way that they used to, but they’re trying to be super civil, sweet and kind.”
Alas, this is one present Arizona doesn’t necessarily want to accept. “When Callie gives her the vase and it’s super duper ugly and she really doesn’t want it, she doesn’t want to reject the sentiment with which it was given, which was Callie coming forth and giving her something and taking care of her in some way, but at the same time, she really doesn’t want the vase, so she tries to manipulate the situation to give it back to her,” Capshaw reveals.
Just because Callie is returning Arizona’s belongings doesn’t mean “Calzona” is done for good, it’s just another step in the duo trying to find their own happiness. “I just feel like it’s been a real natural progression,” Capshaw says. “We had the episode where Callie and Arizona knew the best thing for both of them was to not be together, and then Herman [Geena Davis] came, so it was a train we were all on that nobody could get off. So, for a lot of episodes, the focus wasn’t completely on: are they together or aren’t they together? And now that some time has passed, it’s not as fresh a wound, it doesn’t hurt every time the wind blows on it. It’s healing and we’re moving on. Things are good.”
Are they good enough for Callie and Arizona to eventually get back together? “I don’t know,” Capshaw responds. “Only because they had to go through so much to make that decision to be apart, it’s so hard to think about them being together. They’re just getting to the point where that’s all good. I would feel bad if they then took steps backwards and ended up in a relationship that was super challenging. Everyone longs for the beginning, I get that, you want them to go back to the beginning, but you can’t do that with anything in life.”
Besides, Callie will soon have a potential new love interest in Kevin Alejandro’s police captain—though he’s only slated to appear in one episode so far. Could a love interest also be on the horizon for Arizona? “Maybe,” Capshaw says coyly. “I bet. Chances are!”

Grey's Anatomy: New plane crash opens old wounds
It’s time for Grey’s Anatomy plane crash 2.0!
As EW first teased, Thursday’s episode will feature a plane crash in Seattle that tears open old wounds from the season 8 crash that claimed the lives of Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) and Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh). The all-hands-on-deck emergency situation will be especially difficult for Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Arizona (Jessica Capshaw), who both suffered big losses as a result of the event—for Mer, it was her sister, and for Arizona, her leg.
“[Arizona] is completely shaken up, super to her core shaken up and having crazy flashbacks. She’s scared, overwhelmed, and not feeling great,” Capshaw tells EW from the set of the ABC medical drama. “They have a moment where they help anchor each other: ‘It’s going to be fine. We’re not in the plane crash. Other people were. We’re going to do our jobs.’ They help each other remember that.”
In a bid to help the survivors of the initial plane crash cope with resurfacing PTSD, the rest of the hospital will overcompensate, even as Meredith and Arizona vow to push through the pain. “All the people who didn’t get into the plane crash are trying to take care of everything that the other ones would be taking care of to try to step up for them and recognize that it’s rough for them,” says Sarah Drew, who plays April.
For the rest of the hospital, the event becomes an opportunity to learn more about what really went down when their best and brightest doctors were stranded in the middle of the woods. “Stephanie [Jerrika Hinton] and Jo [Camilla Luddington] don’t realize quite the horror of what happened,” Luddington says. “In this episode, the details get revealed to characters around them that were not aware of exactly what went down, so you see everyone’s reactions to that.”
“We end up learning way more about the plane crash because before it was just gossip, whispers on the wall—literally because the hospital was renamed for the people that passed away that we never met,” Hinton adds. “Now we get to know enough about them to make them full people.”
Continuing the running theme of the season that Maggie (Kelly McCreary) is basically Jon Snow—in that she knows nothing—we’ll also see Mer’s half-sister learn about the plane crash for the first time. “Her reaction is an enormous amount of empathy and understanding for both Meredith and Arizona because they spell it all out,” McCreary says. “She has a greater understanding of why some of the dynamics are in play in this hospital in the way that they are. There’s still so much she doesn’t know about all the crazy stuff.”
But Meredith and Arizona won’t be the only ones affected during Thursday’s episode. “It triggers Owen’s feelings of guilt and responsibility about the plane crash,” Kevin McKidd says. “He has that army mentality where you don’t leave anyone behind, and he’s been eaten up over the feelings that he put them on that plane. He’s really struggling in this episode.” Unfortunately, the event may make him side with Amelia (Caterina Scorsone), who tried to call things off between them last week. “That fires up a lot of traumatic feelings for Owen that make him feel that maybe she’s right, maybe this isn’t a good idea anymore.”

'Grey's Anatomy': Seattle Plane Crash Will Bring Back Old PTSD and Impact Everyone

Stars Jessica Capshaw, Kevin McKidd, Caterina Scorsone and Kelly McCreary weigh in.
It's been three years since the game-changing plane crash on ABC's Grey's Anatomy and those memories are poised to come flooding back to the Grey Sloan Memorial docs on Thursday.
During the episode, a small plane will crash in a Seattle prenatal yoga class and see the expecting mothers brought in for treatment with Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) and Alex (Justin Chambers) taking on the brunt of the cases. It will trigger PTSD and panic attacks for Meredith, whose sister, Lexie (Chyler Leigh) was killed in the crash, and Arizona, who lost her leg in the fatal accident.
"Story-wise, it makes sense for all the characters to be affected by this plane crash," Capshaw told The Hollywood Reporter during a recent set visit. "This is the first time plane crash victims have come into their hospital since they were actually the ones who were in a plane crash, so it's that moment where you’re reminding yourself that it’s happening to other people and it’s not happening to you. You have a very specific part to play in this — which is being the doctor and not the victim — and you need to keep your eyes on that. That’s what I feel like the PTSD is doing: It’s making Arizona really grumpy."
For Arizona, the crash comes as she's spent the back half of season 11 focused on finding her own happiness by focusing on her career after her split with Callie. Their relationship, perhaps more than any other, took a major hit following her leg amputation and affair that came after the fatal crash.
"She’s in a good place," Capshaw said. "The pivotal line to button up her storyline with Dr. Herman (Geena Davis) was when she says, 'You’re always kind of left to the point.' Which in a lot of ways, Arizona has been stuck to the left to the point. Instead of being happy that she was alive, she’s been focused on what she lost in the plane crash. That got her really stuck in a lot of different places. When Dr. Herman said that, she took that in. It’s not that you should mourn being blind or having lost a leg; the point is that you’re alive. So what are you going to do with that?"

'Grey's Anatomy': 11 Ways Season 11 Has Been Its Most Depressing Yet
3. Callie and Arizona call it quits.
In an episode that spanned 30 days, Callie (Sara Ramirez) and Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) hit couples therapy in a bid to work out their issues. The resulting in-home separation ended with Callie realizing that she didn't want to mend the marriage and wanted to break free of her codependence and regain her individuality. Arizona, on the other hand, had the opposite reaction and realized just how great her life with Callie was. Sad faces everywhere. As of now, they're starting to date other people.

Sides for E11.20 Filming dates: March 11 - 20.
SAM – [Interior hospital, trauma two] - Dr. Jones works on Sam who is barely awake and groggy. Sam says Kate was so good, she’s amazing. Dr. Jones tells Sam to relax, he had a heart attack and got into an accident, it’s a miracle he’s even talking. Sam says Kate is the miracle. It was like a load of bricks on his chest and he couldn’t move, Kate took the wheel and was so brave. Dr. Jones lets Sam know that Kate has been asking about him, they’re taking good care of her and for him not to worry. Sam tells Dr. Jones he’s going to marry that girl. Dr. Jones thinks the feeling is mutual. Sam smiles and starts to say it sounds crazy but he will marry… he goes unconscious and the monitors start going crazy.
[Patient room] Dr. Jones wheels Sam’s bed into the room. He’s weak and coming to. He remembers the car crash and starts asking about Kate wanting to know if she’s okay and if she made it. Kate is across the room, she catches a glimpse of Sam and recognition crosses her face. Sam asks her if she’s okay and she replies that she’s fine. Dr. Jones helps wheel Kate’s bed closer to Sam’s. He apologizes to her. She studies him then remembers. She asks if they were eating sandwiches. Sam confirms saying he made some in case she got hungry. She says they were good. He tells her he can make more when they’re up and around. Kate smiles and says ‘yes, please.’ It’s just the sweetest thing to watch.
RESIDENT – [ER] - A Bystander holds court with a gaggle of residents. The Bystander tells the residents that the car rushed right passed him (or her). He swerved and the car hit the building right behind him. Resident says ‘Right behind you?!’ and the Bystander says yes, he’s lucky to be alive. The Resident is mesmerized.
PREGNANT WOMEN (aka Yoga Mom) – [ER] - Dr. Francis is tending to a Pregnant Woman. A few more pregnant women stand nearby concerned, some cry and some work on breathing. The Pregnant Woman explains that they were just doing breathing exercises when a car came right through the window. Dr. Francis checks her head wound. Pregnant Woman says she couldn’t believe the sound. It was deafening and glass shattered everywhere. She’s still shaken and afraid.
INTERN – [Hospital hall] - Dr. Smith is walking down the hall when several interns sprint past. An Intern clips Dr. Smith with her shoulder. Dr. Smith tells the Intern to slow down and asks what is the matter with her. Intern apologizes, says there was a car crash and keeps running.
20-SOMETHING HIPSTER – [ER] - Dr. Logan assesses the 20-something hipster’s dislocated shoulder. The hipster totally thought there would be an explosion or something. Dr. Logan is surprised and totally thought the same. Hipster says that instead the cars just smashed into each other, no explosion, and skidded down the block. Dr. Logan snaps his shoulder into place and he screams.
Sides for E11.21 Filming dates: March 20 - 31.
ALANA –Alana is on her side, banged up, with small cuts from the shattered glass. She’s groaning. Dr. Smith ever-so-carefully rolls her onto her back and does a quick exam. Can you tell me your name? Alana. It’s hard to breathe. Okay, just a second. Is it getting better, worse, staying the same? Better I think. Are you in any pain? Dr. Smith touches her neck, moves it a little from side to side. Does this hurt? Alana shakes her head no. Then she is overcome with a sense of urgency. I’m not supposed to be here. I’m..I have to go. Careful, you’ll hurt yourself. It’s fine. I’m fine. I have to go. I have to call my mom. Where’s my phone? Listen to me Alana, you might be in shock. So just do me a favor and slow down… A beat. Alana calms. Then, as Dr. Smith continues to check her out. That’s good. Now, do you know what day it is? Tuesday. I’m supposed to be in school. In math. We have a quiz. That why you were driving so crazy? I skilled. My mom’s going to kill me. I’m supposed…I wasn’t driving. Who was? Charlie. My boyfriend. Dr. Smith jumps to her feet to look around them. Where is he?!
Alana sits on the ground next to Charlie. She’s shaking. It’s 10:37. Third period just started. Pre-calculus. And Mr. Walden will see that I bagged on the quiz and he’ll tell the office and then they’ll call my mom at work and.. she’s going to freak out. She’s going to be pissed. She just started this new insurance job, it’s really good and. She hates Charlie. She thinks he’s stoned all the time and has no parenting and is… I’m sorry. But she… she calls you a waste of space who drives too fast and…WE JUST FLIPPED YOUR DAD’S CAR! I can’t even. What happened? How are we even here? What’s happening? When Alana winces in pain, grabbing her stomach. Alana, calm down. What hurts? My stomach really, really hurts and everything just feels like, crap, you know and. But Alana’s words become slurry as blood pours from her mouth. Dr. Smith immediately goes to her, grabbing her. Dr. Smith gently takes hold of Alana’s chin. Alana. What’s wrong? What are you? You’re gonna look right at me. Right at my face, right at my eyes. Okay? Good. Just like that. Don’t look away, not for a second. Got it? Alana nods. She’s scared. I know you are, but I’m here. Right here. And I’m gonna stay right here so…don’t look away. I need to do an exam. With her free hand, Dr. Smith opens the lower part of Alana’s blouse and we can see a very deep gash. What’s wrong with me? Alana desperately tries to bend her head down to see, but Dr. Smith keeps her hand on Alana’s chin. Not letting Alana look down. Alana, I’ve got you. Is it my stomanch? Is it bleeding? Alana…Am I dying, please, I want to know…Alana. Eyes on me. Alana stops struggling and finally looks straight into Dr. Smith’s eyes. Alana takes a breath. Calms. Eyes on you. Good.
CHARLIE – Hospital, day – Dr. Smith sees Charlie, stumbling away from the ER. Stop! What happened? You were in an accident and hit your head. Oh. And as Charlie turns to face her, we see Charlie has blood streaming down his face. Okay, I need you to sit down. He doesn’t feel so good. What happened? You were in a car accident and hit your head. Who are you? I’m a doctor. I’m here to help you. What happened? What happened? Alana, Charlie’s girlfriend, looks on totally freaked out. Charlie looks at her blankly, which is even scarier. Oh my God. Oh my God. Alana? Where are we? What happened? Stop asking that! You’re freaking me out! Where are we?
SARAH – mom - EXT. Hospital – Day – Dr. Jones peers in at Sarah and her daughter Jamie who are both starting to panic. Dr. Smith and Swift are nearby. Dr. Jones asks if everything is okay here? Sarah is panting. She has to get out. Dr. Jones tells her to listen. She’s going to be all right. Just…try to relax. Excuse me? Relax? They are trapped in there! Dr. Jones looks around and tells her that Dr. Smith is gonna take care of her. He needs to see how badly the other driver is hurt. Sarah is enraged. You mean that idiot who cut us off? Who almost KILLED US? You need to help HIM? Dr. Jones grabs the jack and Dr. Hall assists. Okay Sarah, you need to cover your face and look away from the window on three. One, two…Dr. Jones smashes the window and opens the door from the inside. Sarah GULPS at the fresh air, clawing to get out..Is the car going to explode??? It’s okay – we’ve got you now. How’s her daughter? Where is she? Dr. Hall wants to get her out of there. Is she ready? Uh huh. She grimaces. Her arm. It’s bad. She starts panting, patting her chest desperately. She thinks she’s having a heart attack! Dr. Hall tells her that she is not having a heart attack. She feels all tight…and flushed…and her fingers are all tingling. Dr. Jones leans over and checks the pulse on her neck. You’re having a panic attack. I need to you breathe in and out. Inhale and…one. Inhale hand…two. Sarah starts to control her breathing. It’s not working. Keep breathing. You can do this. Think about your daughter. Sarah starts to breathe again. Okay. Okay. Come on, let’s get you out of here. Dr. Jones leans in and releases the seat belt. I’m going to lift under your shoulders okay? Ready, set…Owwwww… Go. My ARM. Ahhhh! Dr. Jones carries Sarah to the side of the road. She is moaning and shivering in pain. I need to check you for any injuries. Dr. Jones quickly examines Sarah. When he pushes on her shoulder…Aghhh.! Is it broken? It’s dislocated. I need you to work with me to put it back in place. No, please. Let’s wait for help. And where’s Jamie? She should be with me. She’s too young…She’s…Jamie’s fine. You have a brave daughter, but we can’t wait here. Okay. Dr. Jones lifts her arm to her shoulder. Slowly moves her arm towards her back while Dr. Hall distracts Sarah. So, where were you guys headed? The space needle. She’s never been up there. She’s….Then Dr. Jones makes ajerly move and we hear a POP. Aeehhhhhh!1!! Sarah lets out a shrilling cry that echoes throughout the scene.
POLICE OFFICER – ER Waiting Room. The cops are staring at Samantha with confusion. Ma’am? I’m afraid there’s been an accident. Could you come with us, please? But Samantha doesn’t respond. Catatonic. Are you okay? My…my purse. Let me just get my purse. The officer is concerned.
JAMIE (12) Hospital Day – Dr. Smith climbs over to the back door of the vehicle, peers inside. She sees a 12-year-old girl, strapped into her seat belt and extremely shaken. Eyes wide, frozen…Hi. Are you Jamie? Yes. Are you all right? Does anything hurt? Like, your neck or…? I think I’m dead. Dr. Smith looks at this scared little girl. Who’s more stunned than hurt. Dr. Smith stretches out her hand toward the girl. Give me your hand. Jamie doesn’t. It’s okay. Jamie slowly puts her hand out and Dr. Smith touches her wrist. You’re not dead. You know why? Why? I can feel your pulse in your wrist. I’m a doctor, so I know that means your heart’s still beating. Now you try it…Touch the inside of your wrist. Two fingers. Jamie does. Then she looks back at Dr. Smith. Feel it. Yeah. See? You’re not dead. I’m not dead. I’m not dead. Dr. Smith carries Jamie over to the benches, a safe distance away from the road where the accident took place. She sets Jamie down and she winces in pain. Her ankle. Dr. Smith takes a look at it as the other doctors administer aid. Jamie is imprinting on Dr. Smith. Stay away from your mom’s car. So…you’re a doctor. I am. A surgeon. Aren’t you supposed to treat the people with the worst injuries first? Triage, right? Dr. Smith smiles, charmed and impressed. You know about triage? I did my history project on Clara Barton. She was the only woman at the Antietam. She helped triage the wounded. They called her the Angel of the Battlefield. Dr. Smith looks at Jamie, smitten. But…I’m gonna go get your mom. Just stay here for me. Jamie nods, watching the doctor work. Dr. Smith brings another injured teen, ALANA, and puts her on the bench next to Jamie. Alana is bleeding badly. Dr. Smith holds pressure on her leg. I’m gonna stitch this up. Jamie here will talk to you. Are you scared? Yeah. Don’t worry. They’re going to fix you. Now, you wanna talk about scary…my bat mitzvah was last weekend. I was terrified. Jamie holds pressure to Alana’s leg. I had to stand in front of everybody I know and recite this passage from the Torah. It was relaly, reall long and super hard to memorize, because it’s written all backwards. And even though I practiced…Alana grunts in pain. My grandmother said I did okay…but she’s almost deaf. Dr. Smith finishes her stitching. All done. She pulls a blanket over Alana’s wound so she doesn’t have to see anything. She reassures her…just relax. Breathe. You did great. Dr. Smith looks at Jamie. So did you. Jamie smiles. Now what?
TOBY (30s), ER Doctor – He is flummoxed as yet another ambulance arrives and he runs up to the window of the paramedic. No, no, no. Another one? The paramedic unloads the patient and Toby sticks close to him. They already have that man and his kid and that woman with the mangled legs and the dude with the shoulder injury. When it rains it pours. We don’t have any room. Make it. What’re we supposed to do with this one? Toby stares down at a bloody, battered, c-collared trauma patient who might as well be a bag of potatoes. Fine. But this isn’t on me. Toby knows this isn’t good.
Toby later examines Jessica, his patient, who lays motionless on the ER bed. The ER is chaotic. He needs four units of blood. He examines Jessica’s eyes with a penlight. Dr. Smith arrives and asks Toby for her status. Jane Doe, head-on collision with a truck. Had to be extricated. Positive loss of consciousness at the scene. Poorly responsive. Edie examines Jessica. Pupils are equal and responsive. She’s still hypotensive and tachycardic after two fluid boluses.
PAUL – Hospital ER, Night – Paul is ultrasounding Joshua’s abdomen. Dr. Francis is nearby. There’s blood in the belly. We need to take him straight up. Should we scan him first? There’s no time. Get him an airway… Intubation tray. A nurse brings her the tray. As she removes the mask from Joshua’s face, he struggles again to speak, but can’t. Dr. Francis moves to intubate him, but Joshua fights her off…Paul calls for sedation, please. You need to calm down buddy. Paul holds Joshua down. We’re going to sedate you now so we can secure your airway. You’re going to be fine. Sux and etomidate.
Hospital OR Night – Paul works in Joshua’s abdomen, running the bowel, looking for bleeders. The colon’s avulsed. We’ll need to resect and create a temporary colostomy. We’ve got a grade 2 splenic lac. Paul takes a look. Let’s leave it. Check the four quadrants. Make sure to check the retrohepatic space. BEEP, BEEP, BEEP – Paul takes the chest tube, wiggles it. Blood POURS out. Crap. He’s got a huge hemothorax. We have to open his chest. Thoracotomy tray. Scalpel. Paul slices into Joshua’s chest, furiously works. He can’t find any pulmonary disruption. He’s not bleeding into his chest…this makes no sense. Monitors blare. His heart’s in good shape. He doesn’t understand what…He had a head lac…check his pupils. Dr. Francis checks. Looks up. Grim. His right pupil’s blown. Page Dr. Smith. Now.
ANESTHESIOLOGIST – Gretchen lies on the OR bed when BEEP, BEEP, BEEP. Decreased breath sounds on the right. Dr. Jones realizes that they need to open her chest. Monitors blare again. Persistent bradycardia. Check her pupils. Her right pupil’s blown.
EDIE – PHYSICIAN, late 30s & DR. COHN – She examines Joshua’s eyes with a penlight. A nurse stands by. What’s your name sir? Can you hear me? Joshua tries to talk but can’t. Edie continues. Pupils are equal and reactive. He’s got flail chest in the right. I need a 36 French tube now. Sir, can you tell me your name? A nurse says that he’s still hypotensive. He could be bleeding in his chest. Hang two units of blood on the infuser. I need a trauma panel. Xray and cross him for four. I’m so sorry..this’ll hurt but we have to do it. She puts a chest tube in. Blood and a gush of air comes out. Joshua groans. That must have hurt. I’m sorry. Can you tell me your name? Can you tell me anything? Dr. Smith joins them. We need to take him straight up. A nurse brings her the tray. As she removes the mask from Joshua’s face he struggles again to speak, but can’t. His pressure is holding, maybe we should get a scan. Too risky. He could bottom out in the scanner. We need to open. Edie moves aside but Joshua grabs her arm. Scared. It’s okay. We’ve got you. It’s all gonna be okay. Joshua closes his eyes, trusting her.
OR. NIGHT – The OR team stands still waiting. And waiting. It’s agonizing. Joshua’s chest is now closed on the table, but the stillness of the OR is eerie. When Edie pops in – Any word? Page him again! When the OR doors slide OPEN, Dr. COHN enters the room, very casual. Thank God…I need this man prepped. The team jumps into action, but it’s frantic and uncontrolled. As Dr. Cohn’s being gowned and gloved, Edie approaches, fuming. You were supposed to be here 20 minutes ago! If you guys had ordered a scan, you would’ve called me sooner. What am I supposed to do about that? He was bleeding into his belly. He was stable. You had the time. Now, I’ve got to work like hell to save this man, thanks to you. Your response time is supposed to be 20 minutes. Not forty-five! We had a freaking chance – He had a chance – Get out of my OR. What…You hear me. Unless you’re going to be cutting into this man’s head, you can get out. Now. Now.
ICU – NIGHT – Dina enters and sees her husband lying in the bed. Turns to Edie. What happened? He arrived with multiple injuries. Hypotensive, flail chest and intra-abdominal bleeding. We stabilized him in the ER. Inserted a chest tube. Transfused him two units. There was no time for a CT, we had to intubate him and get him to the OR. It was there we found he had an epidural bleed. Despite our best efforts…your brother’s shown no sign of brain activity. For how long? Twelve hours. Thank you. I am so sorry. I know that’s useless to you right now, but…I am. Edie starts to cry, Edie doesn’t want to look at her. Leave. Please. Emotional, Edie starts to walk away when she comes face to face with Dr. Cohn. She tells him that it was her job to save him, and she failed. He’s going to die. Because I wasn’t a good enough doctor to keep him alive. She’s right. She did fail. She wasn’t good enough. Edie’s crying slows. She’s stunned by Dr. Cohn’s cutting words. And then he softens. But do you know what tomorrow is? Tomorrow is Thursday. There will be new patients who need to be saved. So learn from this. Better yourself. And next time, you will be good enough. What if she’s not? She will be. How can you know that? Because. You care. That’s how I know. Edie summons a smile, small but grateful, then wipes her tears.
ICU, NIGHT – Dr. Cohn enters, nervous. Sir? Jim turns to see…Dr. Cohn, has appeared out of nowhere. Dr. Cohn looks nervous and mortified and intensely freaked out. Jim just stares at him. Uncomfortable Dr. Cohn clears his throat. Sir, I can’t tell you…how sorry I am for your loss. Your wife was an extraordinary woman. I…it was an honor to..And here he shuts up. Because Jim turns and looks at him so cold and angry.
SARAH/WOMAN (30s with a kind face) –Dr. Hall can hear the terrified voice of a woman. Yelling. Panicked. She’s crying out for Winnie. She just keeps screaming the name over and over. She is trapped in the driver’s seat of her crumpled car. Dr. Hall asks her if she’s okay. But Sarah barely acknowledges him. She screams out again for her daughter. Dr. Hall tries to get to her but the door is jammed. Everything’s going to be all right. Dr. Hall is going to try to get her out. What’s her name? Nope. She screams again for Winnie. She’s glassy eyed, in shock. Dr. Hall presses her face up to the window as close as she can. And yells as loud as she’s yelling. Matching her volume. Hey!!! Hey!!! Startled, the woman silences. Begins to cry softly. It’s okay. What’s her name? Sarah. Who’s Winnie? Sarah explains that Winnie is her daughter. She’s was in the back seat. She’s not answering and Sarah can’t move. She wants Dr. Hall to make sure Winnie is okay. Dr. Hall promises to check on Winnie but she needs Sarah to stay calm, deep breaths. Dr. Hall finds Winnie and discovers she isn’t hurt. How is Sarah doing? Sarah says that she’s fine. Mommy’s fine, Winnie. She’s not. She’s clearly in a lot of pain, but trying to hide it from her daughter. Dr. Hall explains that she needs to get a few more daughters. She will be right back.
Later, Dr. Hall and Dr. Smith are with Sarah at the driver’s side window. Winnie has been taken inside. You ready Sarah? One, two..Dr. Hall smashes the window and opens the door from the inside. Sarah says that she loved this car so much. It’s the first car she ever had. And some rich guy in an overpriced midlife crisis car just…you saw him, right? The man that hit us? He’s a total pig right? Dr. Hall explains that he is a 17-year-old kid. Dr. Hall smiles at her while looking at her legs, one in particular that is at a very odd angle. It’s time to get Sarah out of the car. Getting her out…is going to hurt. A lot. Sarah knows that she should be in pain. But. It’s like, her leg hurts so badly that she almost doesn’t recognize it. Like frostbite. The kind where they have to cut off your toes, the damaged part of you starts to feel almost warm. Her leg hurts so bad, it almost feels normal. So maybe it won’t be so bad, getting her out? Sarah has a dislocated hip. They have to pull her out and pop it back in place. Sarah pauses, and then she nods. Dr. Hall gets the scissors out and ready. Puts herself in the fight position. Sarah will need to scream. That’s okay. But remember that her daughter is out there and can hear. Okay? Sarah takes this in. Then she takes a deep breath. She’s a badass soccer mom…Okay. She can do this. Dr. Hall tells her to put her arms around him. He’s going to pull her out. Really fast. Got it? One…two…Just…do it. Before I change my…Dr. Hall does it and Sarah screams in true agony. She’s pushing on her hip…Stop. Please. Stop. Dr. Hall pauses. He needs to fix this leg. He lifts her leg onto his shoulder. Moves it towards her belly and there’s a pop. Sarah lets out a shrill cry that echoes throughout the scene. And then the scream just…stops. Oh, thank God. Because it doesn’t hurt anymore. Dr. Hall is now taking a breath. On her knees. Relieved. Good. That was Good. Perfect. Sarah tells Dr. Hall that she hates her. But she doesn’t.
WINNIE (12) – ACCIDENT SITE - Dr. Matthews sees a girl strapped into her seat and extremely shaken. The car door on her side is crumpled in like paper, inches from her. Eyes wide, frozen…Is she alright? Does anything hurt? Like, your neck or…? Can she talk? Winnie nods and then shakes her head. She doesn’t know if she can talk. How come? Winnie thinks she’s dead. Is she dead? Dr. Matthews looks at this scared little girl. Who’s more stunned than hurt. So he stretches out his hand. Sticks his fingers into the two inches that the window was opened. Put your wrist up here. It’s okay. Winnie slowly puts her hand out and Dr. Matthews touches her wrist. You’re not dead. I can feel your pulse in your wrist. It means your heart’s still beating. Feel your pulse. Winnie does. She can feel it. See? You’re not dead. I’m not dead. I’m not dead. She yells that to her mom. Dr. Matthews looks over to a bench where Alana, another victim sits while other doctors work on other victims. Alana’s a little dingled up, clutching her belly. Some blood in her hair. Dr. Matthews tells Winnie that he’s going to get her mom. Does she think she can go over there? Keep that girl company? Winnie knows that her mom is going to be in a lot of pain and he doesn’t want her to see it. No. Yes. Winnie explains that she can deal with stuff. Her dad died. Right in front of her. They were sailing on a lake and he had a heart attack. They were the only two people on the boat. She got them back to shore and everything. She asks the doctor if he sails? Not really. Winnie offers to take him sometime. Dr. Matthews tells Winnie that no one here is going to die. But Winnie understands – he’s not God. He doesn’t know that. But she agrees to go wait with Alana.
SCENE 2 HOSPITAL – Winnie opens the hospital curtains to see Alana. So brave up to this point. Winnie just starts to crumple as her eyes dart over all of Alana’s wounds. She looks dead. Winnie checks her wrist. Waits. Realizes that Alana isn’t dead. She can feel her pulse. Which means Alana’s heart is still beating. So she’s not dead. When Alana opens her eyes they stare at each other and Winnie tells her to stay not dead. Okay. Stay NOT dead. They stand there a moment, connected. Dr. Smith interrupts and asks Winnie where she’s supposed to be. Winnie wants to know if Alana is going to be okay. She knows this girl? Is she related to you? She’s her friend. Does she know her friend’s last name? No. They just met. Today.
PARAMEDIC – He rushes over to Dr. Reese and Winnie and his patients. Looks like you guys could use some help. Yeah.
FIREFIGHTER – Gotta hand it to you. I’m usually the hero on the scene. Dr. Reese explains that they were just lucky this happened in front of the hospital. The firefighter shakes his hand. Go home and have yourself a drink. You earned it. He gives Dr. Reese a hearty pat on the shoulder and walks off toward the fire engine.
NURSE – The patient is on the table. It’s startling, tense as the surgeons furiously work. Dr. Thomas is shouting to page Neurosurgery right now. They did. Do it again. The nurse pages again.
LATER, the OR team stands, still waiting. And waiting. It’s agonizing. Any word? The neurosurgeon was at a family function…A family function? She said she’ll be there in 30 minutes. Dammit!
JAMAL, ambulance driver – He pulls up his ambulance to the Hospital and Toby is flummoxed. When it rains, it pours. But they don’t have the room. Make it, what’re we supposed to do with him. Look at the guy. The guy is bloody and battered. Fine, but this isn’t on Toby. John Doe, head-on collision with an SUV.

Sides E11.22 Filming dates: Mar. 31 -Apr. 14
J.J., ANNE, LANCE– Anne and J.J. are massive burn victims in a room separated by a curtain. Theyhear each other, but don’t see each other. Lance is Anne’s husband.
In Anne’s first scene she is in the trauma room and her husband Lance arrives. He was coming back from the airport. The taxi didn’t make it down his street because the fire trucks were everywhere. The smoke alarm in their bedroom was beeping when he left. She was going to replace the battery but she must have forgotten. Anne isn’t doing well. Lance tells her that he’s there for her.
Dr. Hall enters Anne’s room to debride her burns. Dr. Hall is friendly and cheerful and J.J. comments that she is nice on the eyes. Anne doesn’t care terribly and once the debriding starts she screams and screams.
Outside of the burn unit, Lance is hovering outside with a gift in hand. He bought Anne a ring. Months ago. Before…all of this. Her fingers are too swollen now. He was going to get something new, but he doesn’t know what would make her happy. He used to know exactly who she was and what she needed. But now she’s stuck there and every time he comes to visit he makes it worse. He doesn’t know how to help her. She deserves better than a guy who makes excuses to leave the room because he can’t take listening to her cry and scream in pain…He wishes he were better. For her. He hands Dr. Lee the gift and asks him to tell her he is sorry.
Months later, six months, seven? Anne’s nose needs to be amputated. She’d rather die. No one will want a woman without a nose. J.J. tells her she is ridiculous. Living is more important. J.J. sings ridiculous Christmas songs to cheer her up, like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Chestnuts Roasting on an open fire (don’t say fire), Jack Frost nipping at your nose…oops. But it is funny. Finally he starts singing I’ll be Home for Christmas and she’s not crying. She’s just quieted. Maybe comforted.
ASHLEY (6) – Hospital patient room. Theresa is packing up her things. Her daughter is by the door and asks her mother where they are going. Away…They are going away. As Theresa beds down to pick up her suitcase she falters, struggling to breathe. She tells her daughter to call for help. Ashley stands by the phone in the doorway transfixed. And just as Theresa finally collapses to the floor with a THUD, Ashley picks up the patient room phone and dials. She calmly explains that her mother needs help.
Dr. BRYN MILLER (30s) striking & opinionated — Complains loudly enough to another doctor that Dr. Chambers can hear. Two hours, TWO for a routine blood draw. She gets that they’re on a budget, but if it’s going to affect patient care, the board needs to get off their asses and hire more nurses already. It’s irresponsible. Bad management. Dr. Chambers interrupts. REALLY? REALLY? How about if you THINK before you start complaining about WHAT IS INCONVENIENT TO YOU? Bryn just stands there, speechless and chagrined.
ND DOCTOR - Doctors prepare for surgery. ND Doctor stares down at the patient. Okay Kelly, we’re just about to start. The anesthesiologist puts a mask over Kelly’s face.
NURSE — Kelly groggily wakes up in a hospital bed. A nurse walks in. Kelly? Kelly? Your husband is here. And Jack walks in. Kelly looks up, as the nurse ushers him forward, smiling.
SOCIAL WORKER — A social worker finds a scared little boy, MICAH (6), sitting in a chair. Are you the smart boy who knew how to call 9-1-1? Micah nods and the social worker smiles at him.
Sides E11.23 Filming dates: Apr. 15 -
MITCHELL (NEW INTERN) – It’s his first day. Beth, a pregnant patient who was in a car accident, is his patient. He is telling her to do what she’s doing, trying to cheerlead, but nervous as hell. She can’t breathe. And he knows it. He prepares a chest tube. It’s going to help her breathe. Beth is worried, she wants to see her daughter. Her daughter is okay. She needs to stop moving. Beth wants to see her. Beth flails and Mitchell stabs her. As the scalpel breaks the skin, Beth screams. Mitch apologizes, frozen in horror.
Scene 2 – Doctor Smith berates Mitchell – If you didn’t know how to insert a chest tube, why’d I walk in on you inserting a chest tube?! He thought he could do it. He thought?! Mitchell almost had it, but she moved. Oh, so it’s the patient’s fault? No. he got nervous. But she told him before to be decisive, and he decided to be decisive. Then she couldn’t breathe and he got nervous and then he got frustrated that he was nervous. It’s a problem he has that he’s working on. But his mind works faster than his hands and oh god, did he kill her?
AUBREY – (Looking over Isaac’s shoulder) He’s looking in the wrong place, it’ll be in his pneumothorax notes. He thanks her. She tells him that he shouldn’t feel bad he skipped the U-stitch. It’s not a very intuitive step. You just have to always be thinking two steps ahead. If she knew he was skipping it, why didn’t she say anything? Really? Yeah, she watched him fail. This is the big leagues. This is life and death. She can’t be looking over his shoulder all the time, helping him. He’s a surgeon just like her at least on paper. He shouldn’t want her help. He shouldn’t need it. He’s better than that. Or he wouldn’t be there. Man, get it together. He tells her she gives really crappy pep talks. That wasn’t a pep talk! She gives great pep talks. And when she gives him one, he’ll know.
BETH (Pregnant accident victim) – Dr. Palmer comes in with the fetal monitor. Beth wants to know if her baby is okay. Fetal heart rate looks good. Thank God. It’s just, she made Keith drive. He wanted to take the train, but she thought driving would be faster. How long have they been married? They’re supposed to get married next week. They met nine months and three days ago. Surprise! She barely knew him. Wasn’t sure she wanted to have a kid with him. But it’s crazy how much you learn about someone after you get knocked up on the first date. So, they’re getting married next week. Tell her that they are getting married next week? Beth, look at her, everything is going to be okay.
Scene two – Ultrasound machine is rolled away. Beth, your ultrasound looks good. Thank you. She can’t breathe. Ma’am, are you okay? She can’t…she can’t breathe. Dr. Mitchell calls for a chest tube and attempts to make an incision, Beth moves and he stabs her with the chest tube as Beth screams…
HAL (40s, rescue worker, freeway) – A full investigation will need to be made, but the roads were pretty icy from last night’s storm. Dr. Franklin asks to know how many victims inside? They’re still doing sweeps but they think he’s the last one. Careful. Dr. Franklin follows Hal to the car. He’s alert, but borderline hypotensive. Any iv access? His name? Keith. Sayers. They haven’t been able to fully secure the car yet. So be careful. Okay?
KEITH (AKA KEVIN) - Dr. Simon examines Keith’s wounds as Keith focuses on his breathing. You really think I’m going to make it? He has to right? He’s going to have a baby. Beth. He tried taking her to those natural birth classes. She laughed. Keith is afraid he’s going to die there. He’s going to die and leave Beth and his baby all alone. Dr. Simon gives Keith sedation meds. Keith asks him if he has any kids. He’s got two. Wow. One is freaking Keith out. They did it all backwards. You know, you meet, fall in love and get married and have a kid. It all gets bigger. Beth and he met and did this huge thing first. We’re having a baby. Nice to meet you. And then we started learning little things. And it’s good stuff. That she sleeps with socks on. We like watching tennis but not playing it. And she likes techno music…which might have been a deal breaker…but we had this big thing baby coming, so you know…Dr. Simon wants to get the tube ready. Keith explains that he’s liking the little things.
Sides E11.24 Filming dates: Apr. 23 - May 5 PASTOR - [Patient room, night] The Pastor stands between Annie and Marcus, who are in side by side patient beds, holding each other’s hand. There are doctors in lab coats standing around. Pastor says it’s not an impulsive, reckless love that brings them here today. These two people have known that kind of love, they have made families and have known all the joys and pains a family can bring you. They have known love and lost it. This has tempered their hearts, refined them, and strengthened them so that they are ready for something truer and stronger. Annie asks if they can cut to the good part. Pastor asks Marcus if he takes Annie to be his wife for as long as they both shall live. Marcus and Annie are already leaning over their bed rails, kissing. x
