On the Star Wars Galaxies (SWG) forums, in the Role-playing section, they hold a contest each week called Galactic Tales. These are stories limited to 500 words and are to be on a given topic. This topic for this Galactic Tale is "Anniversary". The story had to be about a time an anniversary was celebrated. Here is my submission: Empire Day. An Anniversary. An occasion marking the birth of an empire. My Empire! The celebrations are many and varied. Pageants and parades. Galas and Ceremonies. But there is one ceremony, one celebration, that I keep for myself… Every year my apprentice is summoned before me. Even as he enters the room, he knows what I will require of him. He dares not refuse me. Standing there, his face is hidden away. Yet his feelings betray him. He is to travel to my “home” planet of Naboo. To officiate a ceremony in my honor, on the steps of the palace where she once held court. She is the source of his pain and anguish. Were it his choice, his shadow would never again darken those palace steps, his boots never again touch that soil. But the choice is not his. It is mine. And he will do as I command. He has sworn to do so. Every year, he must make the pilgrimage to Theed. Revisit the homeworld of his beloved. As he stands on the palace steps, he gives an outward appearance of confidence and strength. Inside he is in torment, anguish. I can feel it from here. He thinks of his failure that day. His failure to save her life, to protect their unborn child. I, too, think of his failure that day. Of how he failed me… Such plans I had for him. When he was whole. Now he is but a shell, a shadow of his former self. I watched him over the years. Gave him instruction, guidance and patience. These gifts he squandered in a moment of jealous rage. I have searched the galaxy for another like him. One to take his place by my side. There is no one. My plans were made carefully in advance and meticulously carried out. He has frustrated my plans. And for that he will suffer… Every year, the galaxy’s thoughts turn to the success of the Galactic Empire. Every year, my enjoyment of that event is soured by the thought of what might have been. What should have been. A Sith Empire, ruling the galaxy. Master and apprentice. Together in solidarity. These thoughts draw a dark cloud over this day of rejoicing. If I must suffer, he must suffer a hundred-fold. He spends his time trying not to think of her. To block all thoughts of her, of his failure, from his mind. His failure of her troubles him even more than his failure of me. And so I will make sure he cannot ignore it. Every year, I will send him back. To suffer. To re-live his nightmare. He cannot escape the indelible print she left on that place. And every year, as I send him forth, I sense he knows why he is being sent. Yet, he says nothing. And that is well, as he has no right. This is my own private celebration, after all. Who is he to deny it? |
