Is the Jedi Covenant Evil?

I figured that the comic forum could use some freshening up with a new thread, so here we go.

Is the Jedi Covenant evil? Or are they perhaps just misguided, or maybe just misunderstood?

The term "evil" means "profound immorality and wickedness," which I'm certain can be used to describe its members in terms of the premeditated murder of innocent children, but I'd like to see what others think about this subject.

I'm really not sure if the Covenant can be considered "evil". I believe that to be "evil" requires deliberate choice. The Covenant is misguided, and they are certainly "bad", but that doesn't make them "evil".

However after looking at the cover of #33, I think that some members of the Covenant may be outright evil. I mean, a red lightsaber is a rather deliberate acknowledgment that you have embraced the dark side!

Others, like Celeste Morne and possibly Xamar, seem simply devoted to the cause. In fact, Celeste (the only Covenant agent who has fought a Sith Lord yet) continually impresses me by NOT giving in to the dark side.

I think I will have to wait till the end of Vindication before I make a judgment...

I think that most of the covenant members are evil without realizing it, and who is/was is pretty obvious. Like in that one issue where the masters foresaw their deaths:

Q'ANILIA: Yeah, maybe we should wait and see how this all wo--

RAANA TEY: NAW LET'S KILL 'EM.

Xamar is the only Covenant member that I don't really have a good concept of. I think he's good for somewhat realizing the error in what he has done, but I could totally be wrong and he could end up being a crazy baby-eater or something. Which would actually be kind of cool, if executed properly.

There is a difference between doing somthing bad for the right reasons and doing somthing evil. However, it's a very fine line, and the Covenant is not doing such a great job of staying on the "not evil" side.

Seriously, they're pretty much just stomping all over the Jedi Code.

The apparent suspicion by the Jedi Council and the Covenant's thinly-veiled allusions to romantic relationships between each other probably doesn't help that much either.

I don't consider the Jedi Covenant evil. While they may be misguided, that's far from evil - they believe what they're doing is right. When you think about it that way, it's almost like they're the Jedi version of Caedus. Hmm..... perhaps ignorant and misguided would be a better term for these guys.

I don't know--the fact that they planned on murdering their Padawans is what really bothers me. Surely each and every one of those masters could have felt some twinge of guilt or remorse for doing that, but only two have really shown that emotion (and the two that never did are now DEAD). I distinctly remember one panel in the comic where Lucien and Q'Anilia were quietly talking in the chamber as the bodies were being towed away, and that just stuck with me. There was no hint of emotion on either of their faces, and I just find that unfathomable.

Also makes me wonder what they did with the bodies. I'm guessing the good ol' Jedi cremation technique, but who knows with these guys.
