it is said that drinks, even drugs, when done in moderation, are not as harmful. This may become essential to your survival as you find yourself stuck in eternal night, in one small village on the Frozen Shores. In A couple of drinks too many your life may depend on your ability to make the sun rise up in the morning. Moderation, you are about to discover, depends is in the eyes of the beholder.

This quest has been taken by Akadia Whitewind!

Swift cold winds, barren cold sand, a sea dark and cold enough to rob the body from every last ounce of heat. These are the Frozen Shores. Everything about this harsh landscape is devoid of warmth. In the salty soil few plants are sturdy enough to take root. Agriculture, plants and animals are sarce here. Some say that the only reason the human kings of yore allowed the city-state of Carpasha to claim independent control of this region is that nobody wanted it anyways. You thought to take the shorter beach route towards the human capital of Balforge rather than the longer and more populated Eastren road. However, shortly after reaching the Frozen Shore you learned why it was so unpopular. The cold wind and barren landscape wore thin on your nerves and by nightfall you have not yet found one place to stop and rest. Fearing to freeze to death in the night, you carried on until finally, well past midnight you entered a small village. Most buildings are closed and there is little of interest here. However, the village has a tavern and it is still lit. the sounds of loud music and laughing voices can be heard and the windows give out warm yellow lamp light.

(Note: while you don't have any gold, most inns and taverns would be willing to throw in a meal and a warm bed in exchange for a service of some kind)...

Akadia walks to the inn, her toes and finger as well as the rest of her body feels frozen stiff. Once inside she goes to the tender of the bar, the sort time inside has already begun to warm her. She asked the bartender "I haven't gold, but i need lodging and a hot meal, is there something I may do for you to urn that?"

The inn is full of merry people toasting and talking. Generally it seems like these humans are having a party. As you walk in they all look at you in some surprise. Obviously they weren't expecting anyone to show up.

The innkeeper eyes you for a short moment then he nods. "I got a little thing I need taken care of," he says, "but that only happens at 7 in the morning. Until then you can eat and drink and I'll get you a room done. What I'll need you to do afterwards is escort a person into a nearby place and then carry him back. You'll probably be the only one sober enough to do the job anyways, seeing how you elves don't drink alcohol".

People are being pale and weak and die mysteriously... and we can't leave here. When we try walking out of the village we find ourselves walking into the village by some magic. We're all doomed".

We grow many kinds of them. Salmons and Sardines, Herrings and Silkrays and crabs. The bread you ate? that's Silkray egges dried and crushed into flour. Fruits, butter, milk, all this we get from Carpasha in ships. We sell them herrings and salmons, they pay with such neccesities. This is a harsh land, pretty miss. Not the place for weak people. Why not join us for celebration?"

Jensine shakes her head. "Since the darkness fell, our fish are almost not growing at all," she says, "it's just another sign of the coming end of the world".

Noise from the entrance catches your attention. Looking back you see a man stumbles into the room. One of the villagers catches him before he could fall and then sighs. "Arkans got the Palor!" he says. looking at the man's face you notice that he indeed seems unnaturally pale.

it's hard for you to determine Arkans' age. He seems a young man, with tout muscles and a face clean of any creases. However, oddly he is pale, almost white, his eyes are sunken in their sockets and his hair, while dark at the ends, is grey near the sources. you notice that he also seems to be very cold and the villagers cover him in a blanket.

"This is how it always happens," Jensine sighs next to you, "they are very fit and healthy one moment, then the next time you see them they've turned grey and old and weak. usually, two-three days after the first signs appear, they die and we put them on a funeral pyre as commanded by Ashaera, Goddess of Flames. This is a bad place to be in, pretty missy".

Jensine nodds.
"the Palor takes grown men and women. it happens once every three days. When one person dies of the Palor, soon another is sickened. It is a curse from Ashaera no doubt".

The door opens again and a man in a torn and burnt red robe steps in. "Jack," he calls," it's time".
the Bar tender shrugs and points at you. "She's agreed to escort you today, Brother Dave".

The man approaches you tentatively. "An elf!" he excliams in surprise, "hail to thee, high being of the light. Do you have the strengtrh to accompany me through the trial of fire?"

"I'm Brother Dave, of the order of Ashaera," the man bows back, "This place was never big enough to merit a temple but there was a shrine to Ashaera here and I was the head monk... and the only monk... in it. But the first sign of trouble was the haunting of the shrine. a deranged beast of pure flames lives in it. All the holy tools, the book of Ashaera and the holy symbols are now inside but nobody can go in lest the beast kill them. Every morning, at 7 sharp, the beast tries to break out and only my prayers manage to keep it inside.but the effort is great. I'll need you to stay back and not draw the attention of the beast. Once it has retreated back into the shrine, I'll need your help in returning here. Remember, do not, under any circumstances, draw the attention of the beast. your earthly weapons will be useless against it. ARe you ready to go?".

Brother Dave leads you out into the darkened streets. The sky is black but you can't see the moon nor any stars. Something unnatural is clearly happening. You follow him up an alley and find yourself in front of a small round building, looking like a big stone Iglu.

"Stand Back," Brother Dave warns, "and remember, do not draw the attention of the beast".
You watch in amazement as a beast, somewhat doglike but made of pure flame, steps through - literally - the iron door. Brother Dave raises a medallion with the symbol of Ashaera's Golden Flame and starts calling it a wild prayer. The fiery beast moves back one step and seems to shrink. Dave steps forward, yelling his prayers at the top of his voice.

The sound of scuffling feet behind you makes you turn but you don't find anyone there. looking around you see a slumped cloaked figure eyeing you from a nearby alleyway. You move towards it but the figure runs away. The sudden movement seems to have drawn the beast's attention too, though. As you turn back, you see the beast, having been pushed back halfway through the sealed iron door, looking directly at you

The gaze of the beast hits you like a physical punch. you stagger back, close your eyes and shake your head several times. when you open them, you find yourself standing inside what seems to be a large church. A woman, made of pure flames, is standing before you and you recognize her somehow as Ashaera, Goddess of Flame.
"Elf," she says, looking thoughtful, "people of woods and greenery and nature. You fellas are not my type. Weak, the lot of you. But I sense.... something... within you. Sleeping power perhaps? Potential to greatness? But... I could be wrong. I wouldn't bestow my blessing on some empty promise of power. You, Elf, do you feel capable of proving you have what it takes to get my blessing?"

Ashaera laughs. "Oh, Elves, so cute. You try to believe only the five benign gods exist... as if they would be worth anything without us, the five moody ones, to spice up their lives. Alright. Prove that you are not a wimp. Step forth into my shrine. Find the chest beneath the altar in the basement. There lies my blessing. Do whatever it takes to get there, little Elf. Your life may depend on it".

There's a pop and you wake up, finding yourself at the alley. Brother Dave stands above you, looking tired and sweaty.
"The gaze landed on you, hasn't it?" he whispers, "Ashaera forbid, the beast tries to lure you into a trap!"

You enter the shrine and find it dark and in serious disrepair. the benches are broken, some are singed. On the altar ahead of you, the remains of a burnt book can be seen. The shrine is illuminated by one source of light - the fiery doglike creature. It eyes you from its place beneath the altar and growls. Surprisingly, you realize it's not made of pure flames as it seemed before. There's a clear body within the flames.

The dog snarls and breathes a short ranged gust of flames.

BATTLE ENSUES!

VICTORY!

The Kragothian dog disappears, leaving a pile of ash behind. Moving the ashes a bit you find two odd fangs. Kragothian Dog Fangs are a powerful ingredient in Fire-related potions and are very valuable for alchemists. You can always sell them for 300 gold each if you don't want them.

"here" a chillie whisper makes you raise your head. For the briefest of moments you think you see a woman's shade above the alter but it could be just a trick of light. Closing with the altar you find a small book. The title says "Kragoth's Realm". This book is part of the fabled "Spirits of the World" Collection.

There's a small hatch under the dais, possibly leading downstairs to the cellar.

The cellar is dark and it is hard to tell what's in it. However, as an Elf, Akadia has a good nightvision and soon she can discern a few details. there's a bed and a closet in the cellar. a small bedside table has a prayer book and a an unlit oil lamp. there might be a flint in the desk itself so you could light a fire. in the far side of the cellar, you see a small altar with the figurine of Ashaera on it. this may be the altar the woman in your dream spoke about.

The figurine glows.
"Impressive" a hollow female voice whispers in your ear, "You have proven yourself worthy. I am Ashaera, goddess of flame. I bring on the sun and I set it down. Darkness is not my realm. Seek the pale man who fears light and fire. Seek him and destroy him. That is your mission. In his garden the Jewel of Black Skies rests upon a pedestal. Touch it not. My fiends of Kragoth try to break out of here and reach it to destroy it. They can destroy it. But they cannot break out. that simpelton winebag of a friar has true faith in his prayers and I cannot deny them when he forces my Kragothian fiends back into the shrine. Stop him. Let my fiends do their job. I, Ashaera, have spoken. Look down, at your feet. The armor of Ashaera is yours to have. Succeed in your quest and you may keep it. Fail it and the armor would burn you where you stand. I, Ashaera, have spoken. Go now".

The figurine grows silent once again. However, at your feet, you suddenly find what seems to be a yellowish chest mail made of leather-like material. Wearing it on instead of your iron mail, it bursts into flames and then dies out instantly.
A parchment on the side describes it as "The Armor of Ashaera" and gives you a description of what this item is.

You climb up the stairs, wearing your new armor. You pause briefly as you step back into the shrine's main chamber. a creature made of pure flames stands on what seems to be a thick reptilian tail. Glancing at the book of Kragoth you find, you realize it's another kind of Kragothian Fiend, a Kragothian Salamander (which is oddly referred to as "Hand of Kragoth"). There are details about it in the Spirits of the World thread. The creature looks at you and bows respectfully. It seems that it has no intention of harming you or standing in your way.

Remembering that Ashaera said the creatures are serving her, you hesitantly walk past the thing and out the door. Brother Dave stands surrounded by villagers, all looking towards you. They seem shocked to see you come out alive.
"Have you done it?" Brother Dave calls out, "have you killed the beast?"

"Rejoice!" Brother Dave calls, "Praise Ashaera! We're saved! The shrine is cleared of the filthy beast. Now we shall enter the shrine and pray for Ashaera to remove the curse from us!"

"She did?" he asks, "wait! Of course she did! it is a test to my faith, no doubt, to see if I break down and allow the beast to slip out and massacre us! Worry not, my friends, my faith had never been stauncher! I will hold the creature back until the end of time if need be"

Brother Dave nodds and opens up the door to the shrine. Immediately he runs back.
"The dog thing is gone!" he screams, "but there's a big lizard thing instead!"

Akadia went to one of the viliers that looked the least drunk, it was a dark haird young girl "um excuse me miss.. could you show me the way to Swabius." Akadia was not truly at a loss about how to get there, but she thought it apriperut for some one to know were she was dissippering to.

The girl nods at your request.
"you go up that street," she points, "all the way up the small hill. You'll reach a large mansion with a fence around it. That's where Swabius lives. You be careful though. He don't like visitors, normally".

the gate opens to the touch of your hand. in the darkness it is hard to make out details except for a cold dark stone which stands on a pedestal next to the causeway. the mansion itself is a two story building made of brown granite. there's a light on a second story window. the door is made of thick oak. For a fleeting second you think you hear music from within but it dissapears before you can ascertain you actually heard something

There's the sound of scuffling feet and the door opens. you find yourself facing a young man in a dark cape.
"What's it you want?" he asks grumpily.

The man looks at you quizzically.
"I don't take kindly to nosy strangers," he replies, "but perhaps, under the circumstances, as you have troubled yourself to come here... Your questions should not go unanswered. Come in, please. It's monstrously cold outside and I don't know about you but a I could use something hot to drink".

You're led into a large dining hall. The man gestures at a wide, plush armchair covered with crimson velvet. "Do be seated," he says, "ask me your questions".
