Upper Deck; technically not the bow; behind the bridge

As the evening drew nearer and they got ready to sail, Ophelia secured a spot on the upper deck. Almost everyone else seemed to be gathering on the bow, but she liked that this deck was raised; it afforded her a better vantage point. Perhaps not as good as the tiny basket-like perch at the top of the sails (and were there people up there?), but for Ophelia, it was good enough.

Rhea was next to her, which was a relief. Two weeks was a long time to spend traveling, and Ophelia knew how grateful she'd be to have the company. Truthfully, she'd hoped Luke would be joining them on this ship, but he was scheduled to leave on a different one with Rhea's parents as well as Ophelia's own.

"So what do you think of the ship?" she asked. Though she was not normally one to protest companionable silence, there was so much excitement in the air that she felt she had to address it somehow.

Rhea Hale

Rhea was almost done eating an apple she'd bought from a vendor earlier on their way onto the ship, and wondered how to dispose of the core once she'd finished. Ophelia's question, though, was a better one.

"I think I want to learn how to climb up there," she mused, pointing up to the crow's nest.

"Are you crazy?" her friend asked, laughing.

"It just seems interesting," she replied. "And I passed by the navigator's table earlier. That looked fascinating. But I think you might have to be good at mathemetics for that."

"I'm pretty sure that rules both of us out."

"That's for sure," Rhea agreed, and they settled for watching the ship's departure instead.

June 27, 1674 - After Midnight

Irene stepped on to the upper deck, needing some fresh air. The lower decks and cabins were musty and crowded and she couldn't get a sickly sweet smell out of her nostrils. The problem was, of course, that Irene didn't like being on the top deck too long either. The water unnerved her. She needed the lesser of two evils.

Irene breathed in and out. Salt and whatever soap they used to scrub the deck were much preferable to the smell downstairs. Rather than focusing on the deep water, Irene looked up at the night sky. The stars were bright and the moon was a sliver in the night sky. She smiled only to have the peace momentary disturbed. Ears perking, she turned to look at Darrell stepping up, wineskin in hand.

"Apologies, I did not mean to disturb you."

"It's no trouble, I assure you." It had been some time since they had talked.

She gestured to his wineskin, "Can't sleep?"

"It seems to be pretty common on this ship," Darrell pointed out with a quiet laugh. Almost every night he would come up after Daniella and Apollo fell asleep (sometimes while they were still awake, but he needed a walk anyways), chat with the night crew and lend a hand, knowing he was less likely to interfere at that time. There was always at least one more guest around, but usually keeping to themselves.

"I would offer you some, but-"

"I know how you Egalignians are with your red, don't worry,", Irene giggled and then tapped her chest, "besides, I always carry my own."

Patting his wineskin and chuckling, Darrell commented, "I remember Ansel saying the same." They had used to talk about him more often, back when his passing was still fresh on the mind. Noting Irene's conflicted expression, Darrell sought to reassure her.

"He would be happy you found someone. Especially someone from Egaligny, especially someone like Lady Genevieve," Darrell teased, sharing a small laugh.

Irene had accepted a long time ago that she would never truly know what Ansel would have wanted, especially given how backwards he could get, but it was a nice pleasantry with which to comfort each other.

"He would be happy you found people that you love as well," Irene pointed out, ignoring Darrell's seeming nonchalant response. He uncapped his wineskin, the smell of it more poignant than Irene remembered, and took a sip. Irene insisted.

"He might also be inclined to tell you that few things are more important than being with them, don't you agree?"

Irene wiggled her eyebrows at him.

Darrell chuckled and nodded, agreeing with a silent 'maybe'. He expected Irene to not let the subject go, to continue pestering him. Instead, they stood in silence while Darrell sipped his drink. Both of them comfortable in the silence of memory, and both of them afterwards leaving it to join their very happy reality.

Athena

Action first, contemplation later.

It was the wisest strategy, given how she found the state of things when waking from her musically enchanted sleep. The ship sinking was concerning, yes, but what was more concerning was why.

Something has done this damage. And that something was still out there. The sea was as far from her preferred domain as possible, but by the Council she would see to it that her uncle paid for whatever he let roam loose in his realm.

She just had to find it first.

Striding purposefully out of her cabin and ignoring the crystal rune on her left calf, she reached the destruction of the upper deck, picked up the first semi-destroyed wood pole she saw with a sharp enough broken edge, and jumped in the water.

Time to see if there was anything left to find.
