Alysa & Eliza | The Evolution Part One: The Lilac Means "First Emotions of Love are Beginning to Stir." 01. The Inn Near the Docks Alysa and Eliza shared a smile then - shy, provocative - then Alysa closed her book. Was she eagerly anticipating the prospect of such close quarters for two weeks on a boat? Yes, she was, her pink cheeks had betrayed that as much as her mother's carefully rolled scroll around "aids" they had decidedly not told Dad or Malcolm about. 02. The Bridge of the Ship And for the moment they were alone. They were drawing closer together, so that Eliza could see Alysa's warm blue eyes, muddied, like the kind that breaks through an orange sunset. Then - a flash - the world spun. With a high-pitched laugh - warm, full in her throat - Alysa had wrapped both arms around Eliza and spun with her. The surprise was enough to give her leverage; one hand on the waist, gripping crinoline and tulle tight, the other on the shoulder until she drew down to grab her waist. Another spin and Eliza went from dancing to focusing on the tricky footwork of the dance she'd first taught Alysa...heavens, was it already more than a year ago? 03. The Dining Room Startled, Eliza found herself grabbing Alysa's hand - only to have it wrenched from her as the woman started running towards the door. "Lys! Where are you going?!" "People are hurt!" Alysa yelled back, "And the ship's sinking, I need to get my kit before we go to a life-boat!" Always so admirable. Eliza was torn between fury and pride, exchanging a look with Charles that plainly said I'm not that selfless. Part Two: I Have You, Lover 04. Adventurer's Approach "We saw everyone on the islet last night, did we not? And that was directly after the shipwreck. Someone planned this. Someone on this ship either did this or was an accomplice to who did. And got them names of passengers at the very least..." Pandora mused. "That would be horrible," Alysa murmured, wanting to refuse the obvious in front of them, from spite, from worry and anger. She was thinking in quick succession of the head that had rolled by her feet, detached and as free as the chess pieces that had gotten scattered. Shivering with unnecessary chill in the warmth, Alysa was not all that surprised - though she was exceedingly touched -when Eliza handed the book entirely over to the Princess and Pandora to examine. Her priority had shifted to wrapping an arm around Alysa's shoulders to steady her. 05. Brighid's Beach "Liza. Remember what Helena said? We'll survive as long as we're in this together." Leave it to Alysa to remember what the Princess said, she who had always paid such close attention to Vladimir, she who was mourning him by healing others, and trying not to think how he would tease her over that. Eliza took a steadier breath and nodded back at Alysa. Paying no mind to the fact that Angela could look up at them, she drew Eliza's eyes back to her own and brushed a thumb over her cheek. As Alysa pulled her hand back, Eliza snapped a hand up to catch her wrist. "We do want it." Eliza said, her eyes going from her cousins to hold Alysa's steady. She turned her wrist to kiss the inside pocket of skin between thumb and forefinger, then admitted, "She's waited for me, cousin. Not that she told me that's what she was doing. Alysa simply...knew, that was what I needed." 06. Alysa Spies a Faerie That wouldn't protect against your mind. It was her mind that was killing her, just as it always did on sleepless nights. Her eyelids were heavy, but the thoughts were heavier, buzzing and lukewarm with the what-ifs and worries she was filled with. She wished Eliza was still awake. 07. The Beach It certainly didn't bother her any (how Orion looked), although Alysa was giving her a head tilt and smirk as if to say I know what you're thinking. Did she? Does she? Eliza tilted her head in return, adjusting her skirts and smiling at Alysa with a little head-shake. 08. The Griffins Eliza announced, "I have wanted to kiss you since you found me in the barn. I just didn't want you to think it wasn't real." Is this real? Is that her mouth? She tastes like saltwater taffy and wine. Part Three: 09. The Waterfall Eliza had yanked her arms, it appeared, a dizzy and disoriented Alysa worked out as she fell onto her knees gasping. It took long heavy gulps as Eliza rubbed her back before she had stopped choking on the water - on the vision - of her mother being marched away in chains and irons. Shivering, Alysa was whispering, "The dragon would kill them if they touched her, they would, it would, don't-" It took long moments of Eliza comforting her before she realized in horror how many others were still standing under the waterfall. "Go back!" Alysa's voice was suddenly commanding. She pushed Eliza off her and gasped again. 10. The Crystal Cave (1) "I am hard to be caught." Alysa read aloud from the inscription as they move past it. The thought put a tremble in her spine. Are you? Are you hard to catch? Or do you just wish you were? 11. The Crystal Cave (2) Alysa was trembling. Moving towards her with the languid pace of a sleepwalker -- you don't yell at a sleepwalker, they may fall and break their neck -- Eliza started tugging on Alysa's waist. Her lips met the woman's neck, soothing her. She teased, "I can relax you." It was so easy to make Alysa blush. With a soft giggle to soothe her, she slid fingers over Alysa's arm. 12. The Crystal Cave (3) Letting out a sudden exclamation when she felt someone leap up on to her, Eliza spun in a circle of victory by a victorious, hair-drenched, beaming Alysa. There was a breath of relief in Eliza as she was able to drop the last stone. Their mouths met again, this time with certainty, rapture, love. Part Four: Prepare for the fall, lover. This will be ugly. 13. July 4th, 1674 "Wherever you are is the place I will be," you whisper in my hair, hands tightening protectively around my slender frame. You are lying, but you don't know that. 14. The Waterfall at Dead Island Eliza looked to the nearby waterfall with a thoughtful look on her face. The look of scandal and horror on her lover's face made her smile fade. She sighed. Then her hand lifted more insistently, "Are you going to help her lift that too-heavy barrel? I appreciate your search for the truth here, and all, but I do not appreciate being ignored so completely." 15. July 5th, 1674 I have been watching, silent. I saw as the faerie crept up behind him, as his sister slept curled in furs and tears. I tried to rouse my voice. I failed. (I have been doing that a lot lately.) Part Five: I Lost You. 16. The Garden "Ailísa." Eliza croaked. It's a prayer. "You made a choice, Alysa." Devin accused. Did he know he was only voicing her thoughts? "Live with it." The smile, still sad, only widened. "I'm dying with it, Dev." I had you. I lost you. You're wasting away, little fairy. You have killed me. I am furious with you. I have killed us both. (the world's more full of weeping than you can understand) Am I trying to still honor the woman I love, the woman I just killed? We're holding hands, Eliza thought, madly. "She killed Charles, I watched her --" "Stop saying that!" "-- I couldn't just watch anymore!" "Save her," Eliza gasped. "Alysa, tell them how to fix you, you know what to do. Please, you're so smart, you're so strong. Come on, now, stay with me!" "I - love her. I love her, and I killed her." "Ah, woe for the loss of your face, and the loss of your laugh with its lightness--" "I've got you,"Alysa had promised her. I've got you, I've got you, I've got you "--and woe for your wings and your head, ah woe for your eyes and their brightness." You were right-- She'd had to, she wanted to argue. Had Eliza known she was in danger, if they had gone for her instead of Alysa, she might have slaughtered them all. Eliza survives, Alysa whimpered. Until you, a small, tearful voice corrected. "You were hard to catch." |
