You all know pokemon FireRed. A remake of the Origional Pokemon Red we all grew up with. Red was a good game. Good enough, infact, to warrent making a 2nd pokemon Generation, Pokemon Gold and Silver. After the release of Pokemon Gold and Silver, yet another generation would be released, pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, with two p's for some reason. It was that generation in which FireRed and LeafGreen were released. However, many's hearts still were with Pokemon Gold and Silver, so Zel set out to fix that. He began his work on Pokemon Shiny Gold, a hack for FireRed, years before Heart Gold and Soul Silver were every announced. And this game was quite simply, amazing. It had everything of Gold, and added a lot more, even changing some.

I will detail the game under several categories, with sub categories, with a point total out of the weight of importance to the game.

Game Play-45%
Universe-25%
Sound-10%
Multi player-20%
Overall-A combination of the 4 out of 100%

[size0]Game play-
The Gameplay of this hack is what you would expect. A young trainer is sent on a quest to gather the dragonballs and summon the great yoshi, with nothing but a wargreymon. Ok, maybe its not traditional japenese stuff, but this is also not your traditional pokemon game. The game play is pretty much the same however, gather pokemon, and use them to defeat enemies and beat the elite four. You have two regions of pokemon to defeat, but you can only use 6 at a time. Each pokemon can learn 4 moves, and opposing trainers can only use 6 as well.

[size0]The Pokemon: 19/20%
Its a gorram pokemon game. It has to have pokemon. And oh does it ever. You can literally catch all of the 386 pokemont that were available in the generation. Throughout the game play you will meet random pokemon in an area, this make include a mudkip, or a pidgey, based on the random number generator and pokemon available. Each pokemon can learn 4 moves, and can have 2 types out of 17. It is extremly balanced in the main single player experience. Tougher pokemon are harder to get, and tougher moves are learned later in a pokemons life. And because each pokemon has a elemental type, you can change your strategy on the fly if you encounter tougher enemies, compensating for your own weaknesses. The fact that ALL the pokemon are available, with current gen 3 movesets really helps you create and manage teams that will help you beat the elite four, which have pokemon in the 60's now. 19/20

[size0]Replayablity: 17/20%
This game offers alot. In addition to the new pokemon, there are new enemies, new scenarios, and changed locations. Its a pokemon game, so you can always replay the game with a new team, or any restrictions, such as I did with the nuzlocke, and Revan challenges. However, thats just the thing, its long, and adds alot, so it will take a while to actually play it again, which is good. The problem lies with the staticness of the trainers. All trainers will always have the same pokemon, except for your rival, regardless of your choices, so you will always be fighting pidgey's on the first route, and dragonites vs lance. While this allows for walkthroughs and guides to stay relevent, it does get stale; Only you and your pokemon change, everything remains constant. 17/20

[size0]AI: 5/10%
The AI in this game is the same as the AI in pokemon games...stupid. They wont change pokemon, and they wont use items unless scripted, and at the point....they will always use items. While this is fair, its "dumb". If a trainer has a Kingdra with Headbutt, Dragondance, Doubleteam and Hydro-pump against a Gengar, they won't switch once they run out of Hydro-Pumps, allowing for easy defeat. And if they do manage to hit you, it's seemingly random. A trainer will use a move super effective to you more often than not, but you still get some youngster using his weedle against your steelix spamming poison sting...mostly cause the idiot has a rutting weedle, but that's a different problem. 5/10

[size0]Enemy Design: 12/15%
You have to fight me...and my 6 metapod...why? Why not!? Yeah, there's still the dudes with the 6 magikarp and metapod, however...this game makes up for it. During my nuzlocke run, I counted 5 Rivals. Yes, thats right. You have Silver, the traditional rival that stole Elm's pokemon at the beggining. But after that comes carlos, the avatar for the creater of the game, he'll be up with you till the end of the game. So will 4 other characters. Otherwise its the same as the regular game. Trainers come with a class, which will dictate....nothing....Trainers have the exact same pokemon no matter when you encounter them. This is a fundamental flaw of all pokemon, digimon, and most other games, scripted encounters. Sure, you may get through the first route without hitting pidgey, the first trainer will always have a rattata, and this is boreing in my eyes. 12/15

[size0]Action: 23/25%
Honestly, it's pokemon. It's an epic chess battle between 6 pokemon using a limited number of moves, trying to survive, and kill at the same time. Or its an epic marathon of trying to get to the next town. Either way? Its bloody fun. Pokemon is about the action. It's about the strategy. Sure, it may be easy at times, but what pokemon game isnt? But, this game does make the elite four tougher than any Gen 2 game, and it shows. I spent a week training up to their level, and still only used 4 pokemon to defeat them because I didnt have time, I had to post it, but that's a different subject. Let's stick with action, shall we? Well, it's there, and theres alot of it. Ignoring enemy design, and any replayability issuies, lets just say its fun at it's core, which is what matters,
Each trainer sends out a pokemon, and they each select a move. There are many moves available to a pokemon but you hve to select the right one for the situation, and you can only have 4 on each pokemon. Which ever pokemon is faster hits first. Damage is done based on the attributes of the pokemon, and the move. Once damage is calculated, it is subtracted from the pokemons HP. Once HP hits zero? KO. Once all pokemon are KOed from one side, the other is declared the victor
23/25

[size0]Controls: 6/10%
Controls are simple. arrows to move, A to select. However, thats not the problem. In the overworld, there are occasional glitches, mostly fly, which make that segment harder. Fly uses the map of the Sevi Islands to chose your location, only the names change. This is a major flaw for when you need to go to golden rod after hitting the indigo plateu...having to walk back sucks...Other than that, it's simple, it's fun, it's pokemon, and did I mention you can hit the space bar to speed up? almost makes up for no fly 6/10

[size0]Total: 36.9% of 45%, 82/100
It's pokemon, pokemon is fun, I give it 82/100, or 8.2/10

Universe-
We grew up on Pokémon. It is a world inhabited by strange creatures with strange abilities. It is a coming of age story for you, the player, and this game captures that. I personally grew up on Crystal, but I started with Yellow when I was 9, and I was into it

Story: 22/25%
There's not much story in a Pokémon game, but this game tries dammit. The game starts as you help Professor Elm on an errand, and he tells you to go one journey fighting people for no reason. And that's where it opens up. It's what you encounter in johto that makes this game special. You encounter ruins with strange letter Pokémon and you have to explore it. You encounter a cave with 3 levels, 2 of which you can’t explore the first time. You encounter a town full of slowpoke, which are being harvested by team rocket for their tails. You then run into 2 towers, one that burnt down, that reveal 5 of the new Legendary Pokémon to series and you learn the lore. You keep going and have to help a sick Pokémon in a lighthouse. After that you encounter more team rocket trying to evolve magikarp through easier means, and you have to stop them. After that you have to go back to a city and defend the radio tower. After that...after that...after that...It's just that. It's like almost every city adds something to your journey and it’s just a pleasure to experience. While there is a lack of "I am your father" going on, there is a lot happening in this region, and it's a very nice story. 22/25

Characters: 15/20%
There are plenty of characters in this game. Many will be encountered more than once, but it’s only a few of the total characters. The no named NPCs will same random crap, but they do give the world some fullness and add some variety. Some of the gym leaders, and lance, are encountered outside of their original location, and show you a side of them that the kanto characters would never show. Jasmine helping Amphy, or Chuck’s wife hating that he trains so much, or even lance battling team rocket; there’s not much character development, but there is character establishing and more than just “Brock, the rock hard trainer” 15/20

Graphics: 16/20%
The graphics are 2d, obviously; But they look amazing, the grass on the ground just looks good. That’s all I have to say about that. 16/20

Setting: 24/25%
Johto. My favourite region. While it doesn’t have the varity of Hoenn or the features of Unova, I like it. There isnt a city I don’t like, and there isnt a cave I didn’t want to explore. The mod even adds new areas to existing settings, such as a re-design to Victory Road. It’s just nice…it’s the only region I would make in minecraft 24/25

[size0]Total: 19.25% of 25%, 77/100
The pokemon series is hit and miss with its universe. While it is deep, its just a 2d world, and it feels like it, while the setting is great, and the premise is sound, theres no real reason to like your pokemon, or even want to explore

Sound
From my republic commando reveiw, you know how much I like sound. I like the ambiance, I like the emotion, I like it. Starwars is not starwars without the Dun dun dun dadadun dadadun. And poemon is not pokemon without the music, or sound effects.

Music: 70/75%
I have nothing bad to say about the pokemon music. It's always driving, always creepy, always what you want it to fight that situation. There is nothing wrong with the music. Just, dont hit the space bar, or you will get a shitty sped up version of the song. For that, it loses 5 points, otherwise perfect, 70/75

Sound: 22/25%
The same goes for sound. The cries of the pokemon, the steps of the grass. Just dont hit the space bar. Whenever I play a game, I want my powerful attacks to feel powerful. Sound helps. There is nothing better than hearing an awesome sound with an awesome attack to tell you it does damage. You use your eyes for everything, might as well get your ears active. Everything is better when you have more senses active. 22/25

[size0]Total: 9.2% of 10%, 92/100
I always like sound. But I feel it didnt matter with this game. I played all of it on mute anyway, listening to music while I grind, with the space bar, but it exists, but you most likly wont need it.

Multiplayer
Wait....multiplayer?...Well...that's a giant derp. Pokemon is huge on multiplayer. You need to connect with friends in order to catch them all, and use your teams to their full potential. However, this game lacks that. It's an emulator. You cant easily connect your teams and battle as far as I know. For that, I have to give this section my first every Derp :o

Overall 64.05/100
Honestly, a little low for such a good game. But It is a mod, and it doesnt have multiplayer. It has its own fair amount of glitches, but it adds alot. Also, it's not finished. I failed to mention that earlier, but it's still in beta, but I rated it as it was finished, which is alright, seeing as how it's a failure of the fact that its a Rom. I did enjoy it, and I recommend a download. Math aside, I would rate this game a 84 for personal experience, with a 64.05 technical raiting. But either way, It works. It adds alot, and takes away some, so its averaged out, and I have given it an average rating. Personally, this game is a 84, I didnt play it for multiplayer, but 64 it shall rest

But as always, here's my actual gameplay [url = http://nsider2.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=588141&st=0] Enjoy![/url]
