Rather than focusing on the guilt you may feel towards the addict, it is crucial that there’s an understanding of responsibility between both parties so that the past is pushed aside and everyone can move forward in a healthy manner :)

I think it’s important to understand what led to the addiction. Finding the root of the issue gives the best insight into getting past this problem.

It’s only after understanding the disease did I realize how I can help someone battling addiction. It’s hard to explain but it allows the relationship to survive.

I don’t understand how someone can get addicted to alcohol but a family member is currently going through rehab and I’m not sure if it’s an actual problem.

@RyanG I actually started reading books on addiction and that really helped me wrapped my head around it all. Let me know if you want some suggestions:)

As an addict, the only advice I could give is even if you don’t understand the disease, just be there for the person and that will already make a big difference.

@MarkWillomoscovich I completely agree that it’s hard to explain. It’s not easy to help someone when you don’t understand the disease they’re going through.

I think the fact that it’s becoming more of an open topic is a great way to learn about addiction. There are now so many studies out there that are real.
