I've been studying Tae Kwon Do for a couple of years now. It's been pretty cool; I've gotten fitter by losing fat and gaining muscle as well as getting more skilled in kicking. It's combat-oriented so we're learning how to use the techniques in a self-defense context as well. |

I use to be in Karate class when I was younger. I got up to the third belt rank, and I was going for my fourth but they had this staff change. The newer teachers weren't that nice to us, which I was only a kid at the time. If I kept at it I'd probably be pretty good at it by now. I won a trophy once. |

I also used to learn karate in high school for 5 years, brown belt now but never update it anymore as I barely practice and do the exercise. And the dojo I used to train is also closed. It's been 8 years btw. |

Hmm, does self training count? I used to look up tutorials online and watch videos on youtube and practice in my room. I think I would spend a week trying to teach myself one thing but eventually I stopped. Only good thing I got out of doing all that was that my reflexes got slightly better and I can vaguely recall a few punching and kicking techniques. The town I moved to has a lot of Karate places and I even told my mother to sign me up but she never really got to it. To be honest, I'm kind of reluctant to go since I'm sure I'll be the only adult ._. |

Been doing wing chun kung fu since I was 15. It's soooo good for you, especially (gals) during that time of month when you are crabby and need to punch out something. I cannot recommend enough how enlightening it is, we do sparring once a week and it really tests you. You find that when you are being confronted the automatic reaction is for your brain to freeze and just forget all that rote learning. I understand why people get attacked and just freeze, then regret it later. Our bodies have automatic flight/fight reactions as a result of adrenaline and there's no way to prepare for it than to pratice working through the unpleasant feelings. |

A couple nights ago, I was in a discussion with princess-dagger about self-defense techniques. I figure I ought to share the video I linked to her since I believe that knowing self-defense is essential for anyone and everyone. This video showcases a fundamental technique--the palm strike. This is much safer and easier to do than making a fist and punching: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Mt-e39uYmw The rest of the channel has other personal protection videos worth watching. |
