Mike is a shy, twenty-seven-year-old doctor. He grew up in a conservative small town. His middle class parents were very religious, and Mike has a strong sense of morality because of them. Since he wanted to help other people, Mike chose medicine as his profession. He worked very hard to become a doctor, overcoming academic problems as well as social difficulties. As a result, he had very little time to enjoy himself. Six months ago, he met Tricia, who is from New York City. An outgoing and happy-go-lucky woman, she has brought joy and love into his life. Although Mike's parents realize that she has had a good influence on him, they have various objections to her. She comes from a poor family, she is five years older than Mike, and she is separated from her husband. She also has a two-year-old child. Since Tricia has liberal ideas, these differences don't matter to her. Mike, however, is torn by the conflict between his parents and Tricia. 1. Write a message stating the reasons why Mike would want to marry Tricia, the reasons why his parents do not want him to marry her, and the reasons why Tricia would want to marry him. 2. When you have read the messages sent by other group members, write a message stating the ways in which Mike and Tricia are opposite. This could include the kind of things that they might do in their spare time. 3. Finally, as a group, decide what Mike should do. |
