Resident Evil 7: Biohazard Review; contains brief game spoilers

After the critics shit on Resident Evil 5 and 6, Capcom were forced to change their formula to cater to their most vocal fans, the ones who weren't particularly fond of the current direction they were taking, which seemed to prioritise action over horror. So they gave us Resident Evil 7, which looks more like what (the now cancelled) Silent Hills game was supposed to be, rather than a Resident Evil game. Capcom claim that the game was in development long before PT (Playable Teaser for the Silent Hills game) was released so they can't possibly be copying it. They released the first demo of Resident Evil 7, and said it was just an isolated gaming experience that had nothing to do with the game (spoiler alert, they lied, not only is the demo directly connected to the game, but you play the same part from the demo in the main game).

Capcom set out to make Resident Evil 7 the scariest game ever made, and most people would say they succeeded (people who have never played Outlast). The game is truly terrifying, even more so if you have a Playstation and make use of their (aptly named) VR system, PS VR. It does make good use of jump scares but it's the atmosphere where the true horror comes from. You never feel safe and know there could be a threat around any corner. The character you play as is an average joe with little to no fighting experience, he's just a (faceless) dude looking for his missing wife in a derelict house full of decaying food and very creaky floorboards (and walls) as well as some very evil residents (hah! get it?). Including: Jack Baker (the other dude your wife likes to call "daddy"), the patriarch of the family who can't wait to formally welcome you to the family son. Marguerite Baker, the crazy bug lady whose cooking you love unconditionally. Their very special and mysterious son Lucas who you're probably gonna learn more about when you fork out for the upcoming DLC that Capcom insists hasn't been taken out of the game to sell to us all later. Then there's you, the player, Ethan, the most generic playable character in a Resident Evil game ever. They put absolutely no effort into this guy at all, your gran runs faster than this guy, good luck outrunning Jack on Madhouse difficulty. His dialogue is atrocious at times and his reactions (or lack thereof) make you question who the real psychopaths in this game are.

Even though the game starts off like Outlast, rest assured it does eventually devolve into a Resident Evil game. It has all the classic features such as puzzles, herbs, item management, cheesy dialogue, villains who just won't die, references to the classic games and a fan favourite who may or may not have made an appearance at some point (the fans are divided on that one). You start the game with nothing but you will slowly build an arsenal of weapons as it goes on. If you are a Resident Evil fan, or a fan of the horror genre then you should try this game.

Some quick tips:

- If Jack severs your foot, crawl towards it, grab it and the First Aid bottle. Hold your foot to your leg and spill the First Aid all over it. You're good to go!

- Burn the bugs (or use your knife) don't waste ammo shooting them.

- Not all boxes are friendly

- In the garage, get the car keys from the table on your right and then get into the car, leading to something hilarious no matter how things play out.

It can be played without the VR head set, right? I heard enemies get really close to your face.

It certainly can and is still a very entertaining game.

Yep, and it's just a case of forking out £250 for PS VR, and then buy the PS Camera (£40) and PS move separately (£70) of course to get the full VR experience, assuming you have a PS4 already, if not then cough up another £200!

No, I don't want things in my face. I was asking so I could get the game without the VR things way too far to your face headset.

Without VR it depends on how close you are to your screen I suppose

How close are you normally to the screen? I'd actually imagine VR would be and for your eyes.

I sit a "reasonable" distance from my screen, but then I do have a big one. They say the bigger your screen the further away you should sit, which defeats the purpose of getting a bigger screen if you ask me
