Legends of Tomorrow Recruits Classic DC Heroine

The Waverider will add a new crew member for the upcoming third season of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

The CW has announced that Tala Ashe (American Odyssey) will join the cast as Zari Adrianna Tomaz, a character better known to DC Comics fans — not to mention viewers of 1970s Saturday-morning television — as the superheroine Isis.

Ashe’s character is described by the network as a Muslim-American woman from the year 2030 who lives in a world of contradictions: “Technology has brought about incredible change in her future — too bad human nature hasn’t kept pace. Fear, prejudice and a lack of care for the planet have forced Zari to become a “’grey hat hacktivist.’ A computer nerd with a wry, combative attitude. A woman living a double life who doesn’t realize that she has secret, latent powers derived from an ancient, mystical source.”

That description deviates from both the heroine’s earlier TV roots and her more recent comic book origins while keeping the “ancient, mystical” elements.

The character was introduced in 1975 on the live-action CBS series The Secrets of Isis as a counterpart to Captain Marvel, and the two shared The Shazam/Isis Hour on Saturday mornings. Joanna Cameron starred as Andrea Thomas, a high school science teacher who could summon the powers of the goddess Isis — flight, super-strength and super-speed among them — by using an Egyptian amulet she discovered at an archaeological dig. Isis also starred in her own DC Comics title, which ran for just eight issues from 1976 to 1978.

The publisher reintroduced the character in 2002 as a goddess and then, in 2006, as an Egyptian woman named Adrianna Tomaz (an homage to Andrea Thomas) who in the series 52 is given the magical Amulet of Isis by Black Adam and Captain Marvel, which imbued her with a range of abilities, including healing and control over nature.

Ashe, whose TV credits also include Smash, 30 Rock and Law & Order, joins a Legends of Tomorrow cast that includes Victor Garber as Martin Stein, Arthur Darvill as Rip Hunter, Dominic Purcell as Mick Rory/Heat Wave, Caity Lotz as Sara Lance/White Canary, Franz Drameh as Jefferson “Jax” Jackson/Firestorm, Brandon Routh as Ray Palmer/Atom, and Nick Zano as Nate Heywood/Steel. Although Maisie Richardson-Sellers appears as Amaya Jiwe/Vixen on the first Season Three poster, she wasn’t listed in the initial synopsis, which some have interpreted to mean her character will return to her own era.

After the defeat of Eobard Thawne and his equally nefarious Legion of Doom, the Legends face a new threat created by their actions at the end of last season. In revisiting a moment in time that they had already participated in, they have essentially fractured the timeline and created anachronisms — a scattering of people, animals, and objects all across time! Our team must find a way to return all the anachronisms to their original timelines before the time stream falls apart. But before our Legends can jump back into action, Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) and his newly established Time Bureau call their methods into question. With the Time Bureau effectively the new sheriffs in town, the Legends disband — until Mick Rory (Dominic Purcell) discovers one of them in the middle of his well-deserved vacation in Aruba. Seeing this as an opportunity to continue their time travelling heroics, Sara (Caity Lotz) wastes no time in getting the Legends back together. We reunite with billionaire inventor Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh), the unconventional historian-turned-superhero Nick Heywood (Nick Zano), and Professor Martin Stein (Victor Garber) and Jefferson “Jax” Jackson (Franz Drameh), who together form the meta-human Firestorm. Once reunited, the Legends will challenge the Time Bureau’s authority over the timeline and insist that however messy their methods may be, some problems are beyond the Bureau’s capabilities. Some problems can only be fixed by Legends. Based on the characters from DC, DC’S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW is from Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television, with executive producers Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, Andrew Kreisberg, Phil Klemmer and Sarah Schechter.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow returns Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT this fall on The CW.

The Latest ‘Legends of Tomorrow’ Recruit Could Mean a Drastic New Direction

Quote:

The Legends of Tomorrow are set to face some extreme trouble when the show returns in October, but they will face it together with a new recruit, Zari Adrianna Tomaz. DC fans may recognize Zari as the alter-ego of the heroine Isis, but if you haven’t heard of her, here’s everything you need to know about the newest member of the team.

An Unusual Beginning

Unlike most DC characters, Isis made her debut on TV rather than in the pages of comics. The Secrets of Isis was a short-run show with two seasons in 1975-6. It starred Joanna Cameron as Andrea Thomas, a high school science teacher who found an Egyptian amulet during an archaeological dig and gained the ability to call upon the powers of the goddess Isis. The character also crossed over several times to its equivalent show, Shazam!

A year later, Isis made her first comic appearance in Shazam! #25, which portrayed Isis as identical to her TV counterpart. Because of the success of her appearances in the Shazam! comics, she later fronted her own comic series.

Isis later returned in the New 52 comics as an Egyptian named Adrianna Tomaz. A refugee who is enslaved by Intergang, Black Adam frees Adrianna. Later, she helps convert Black Adam into a hero, and in return, she is gifted with the Isis amulet.

When transformed using the amulet, Adrianna gains physical abilities similar to other members of the Marvel family. She is superhumanly strong, on par with Wonder Woman, and able to easily withstand Darkseid‘s Omega Beams. She has super speed and intelligence, and all the other characteristics of a Marvel superhero. However, that is where the similarities end.

Unlike the other members of the Marvel family, she has control over the elements – water, fire, earth, air, and electricity, which means she can control Earth’s weather. These powers, however, are tied to her emotions – tears cause rain, anger causes destruction, and so on.

What She Means for the Legends

As can be expected with a show revolving around time travel, the writers of Legends have decided to play a bit with Isis’ origins – especially what time period she hails from. The official description of the character tells us she will be a “Muslim-American woman from the year 2030,” which is a time period that the Legends haven’t yet visited.

We also know that Zari will have “secret, latent powers derived from an ancient, mystical source.” Whether this is the Amulet of Isis, we will just have to wait and see. Regardless, it looks like we will almost definitely be having another bumbling superhero this season. Reports suggest that Vixen will be returning for Season 3, and as a hero that draws her powers from an ancient, mystical source, we could see Zari develop her abilities under the guidance of Amaya.

The Legends of Tomorrow version of Zari will also no longer be an Egyptian refugee nor a schoolteacher. Instead, she will be “a computer nerd,” and a “gray hat hacktivist.” Flash has their CiscoRamon, Arrow has their FelicitySmoak, and even Supergirl has Winn. But a computer expert has been noticeably absent from the Legends crew since the beginning. And until now, they haven’t needed one. Could this be pointing towards some extreme technical difficulties for the Legends for next season?

Will Isis Launch the Legends Into the Future?

Zari’s home time period (2030) could point to a more future-oriented season. Season 1 and 2 of Legends dealt mostly in the past, whether it be the medieval times or prehistoric. Season 3 could go the opposite direction, with the Legends facing a threat from the future.

Including Isis opens up a range of new storylines we could see play on in Season 3. Nobody expected the Justice Society of America to make an appearance on Legends. And even though it sounds farfetched, could we see a version of the Marvel family show up on the show?

While DC is already making a Black Adam film, and Shazam is in the works as well, that didn’t stop them from having Flash on both TV and the big screen. Bringing Isis into the fold opens up the potential for more characters from that side of DC, and Black Adam would certainly make a unique threat to the Legends.

Legends of Tomorrow Season 3 returns in October 2017.

They are making Isis a Muslim. Let that sink in for a moment.

I'm gonna leave two relevant YouTube comments on the subject here:

Quote:

Adam's wife is NOT Muslim. In fact she knows that the Egyptian gods are real because adam got his power from them SHAZAM = Shu, Heru, Amon, Zehuti, Aton, and Mehen
To have time travel all they would have to do is to spend an afternoon and show Isis that Islam is fake.
So if they have ISIS in this it will NOT be black Adam's wife and if it turns out it is then it makes no bloody sense

So the EGYPTIAN character (who has appeared in the comics before, as an Egyptian) is going to be a MUSLIM. Would this count as cultural appropriation or is it only for white characters?

That's another point. If Isis knows about the Egyptian gods, wouldn't she be more likely to be part of that religion?
