Not sure how many of you are familiar with this, but during E3, a potential gem of a game was presented. While the game itself is beautiful, and a callback to ages past, what stands out is the maelstrom of politics and bullying surrounding it. But... first thing first... Odd Tales - The Last Night [From the Steam page of the game] Humans first knew the era of survival. Then they knew the era of work. Now they live in the era of leisure. Machines have surpassed human labour not only in strength, but in precision, intellect, and creativity. The fight for survival doesn’t mean food and water, but a purpose for living. People now define themselves by what they consume, not what they create. The Last Night immerses you in the everyday life of Charlie, a second-class citizen living in a city brimming with augmentation and citizens living a gamified existence -- none of which Charlie can experience himself due to a childhood accident. Apathetic and disheartened by the seemingly pointless world around him, Charlie is presented with an opportunity to take matters into his own hands. But at what risk? A summary of what has happened: Following the game's premiere during Microsoft's presentation at E3 2017, Tim Soret was noted to have previously posted statements around 2014 and since on social media that were seen as pro-Gamergate and antifeminism. Coupled with the descriptors used within the game's marketing material, such as "second-class citizen" and "gamified existence" which were seen as aligned with these views, some took to Odd Tales and Raw Fury Games to have them stop publishing the game. Tim replied following this that his stance from his previous position has since changed, and that The Last Night was in no way meant to be commentary surrounding the Gamergate controversy. He apologized for his past tweets while on stage during the PC Gaming Show the next day, stating "They don’t in any way represent where I am today or what The Last Night will be about".[8] Raw Fury supported Tim, stating: "The comments Tim made in 2014 are certainly surprising and don’t fit the person we know, and we hope that everyone reading this who knows us at Raw Fury on a personal and professional level knows that we wouldn’t tolerate working with someone who portrays the caricature of Tim going around the internet right now." Three different views of the events: Polygon: Designer of cyberpunk indie The Last Night speaks out as Twitter history causes stir (update) Heatstreet: Feminist Zoe Quinn Bullies ‘The Last Night’ Game Developer for Criticizing Social Justice Breitbart: Leftist Rage Unleashed Against ‘The Last Night’ Creator During E3 Gaming Expo My view on things: I have been pretty open about my support of GamerGate in the past, and I am a firm believer that anyone calling themselves a gamer cannot possibly be against GamerGate's stated goals. I have also been pretty vocal against forcing a creator to apologise or change their creation in order to appease the mob, even when I am part of said mob. Lastly, I have seen time and time again, that you should never apologise to these people to begin with, as they will only push further the moment they smell blood. While I see Tim Soret's apology as being a bad decision, however disingenuous, and I am quite familiar with the person responsible for stirring up shit again (the infamous Zoe Quinn, a "game developer" only in the loosest of definitions) and just how connected she is, I think that this is ultimately a good thing. The game is now on the radar of quite a few people, and I plan to put my money where my mouth is. I will buy the game on Steam, even if I end up playing none of it. |

But what if the game encourages people to go out and commit rape? |

If feminists are upset, the game must be good. |
