Okay y'all, question time.

1. In one sentence, what is a hero?

2. What is the first thing that comes to mind when you use the word hero?

I am working on a personal thesis on the subject and your input would be appreciated. :)

Ok, hmm. Well, this is what I came up with in answer to the first one. I'm not sure it is quite what I'm after, but it's something along these lines.

A hero is somebody who posesses admirable character traits which I would like to emulate, and who constantly affirms these qualities despite great pressures to do otherwise.

2. Well, since Colossal started often it is some character in tights. :P But if we leave the costumed characters out of it, the first thing that comes to mind is a battlefield. It's covered with smoke and soldiers, and filled with stories that aren't quite told. Somewhere in there I can see that statue with the soldiers raising the flag--I forget the name of it. Anyway, some words ust have a lot that go with them. :)

Iwojima. :)

1. A person who rises above the crowd by doing what they can with what they have even when that means giving everything.

2. Battlefield. Last stand. A small group of men -- brothers in arms -- making one final stand against the enemy swelling around them. Grins on their faces, fire in their eyes, and swords in their fists. A final blood-curdling battlecry.

I respect the opinions so far. :) However, I differ from Sunbeam's view.

I don't believe a hero needs to stand out or rise above the crowd. I believe a hero is somebody who does everything he can for others, no matter what it cost him, and despite what comes against him. His family might turn against him. His friends. Etc. He's always doing what he can that's what's right. There are so many everyday heroes in our lives that we don't think about it that much sometimes. They just don't stand out or rise above the crowd. :) I can think of a few of those right off the bat. Not incredibly helpful here, I guess, but I hope whatever I did send across helped a little, at least. :)

As for first thing that comes to mind, it's hard to say that one thing in particular comes. Movies, books, pictures - all these kind of give me mixed thoughts. Most people think of them as handsome (or pretty), strong, bold, maybe a costume, etc. I guess this all depends on personal perspective. Everybody invisions heroes differently. Choose the way that fits you, I'd suggest.

Which is abnormal, which means that he rises above the crowd.

I don't mean that he's in prominant place. Just that in the Eternal scheme of things he stands out above the rest because of the tough calls he's been willing to make. That puts him a 'notch above,' thus, meaning they've risen above the crowd. Whether or not the crowd notices.

Ben

I believe a hero is someone who goes the extra mile to give someone lower or above him, hope or reason to live.
