Just some interesting facts here about the most popular abilities on the forum...

Invulnerability is the most popular, with nine instances. Most of these are in conjunction with Strength.

Strength is the second most popular, with seven instances -- all but two are in conjunction with Invulnerability.

Invisibility has a whopping four instances and is tied with Accelerated Healing for third place.

Next on the totem pole come Speed, Phasing, Shapeshifting, and Electrokenisis for fourth place.

All the rest of the abilities are either in instances of ones and twos, or none at all. This survey is based upon the 34 'active' (meaning they are in circulation... Not necessarily that they are in use *prods unused characters*) metahuman characters and does not include gadgets, serums, or other devices used to give superpowers.

Just thought that was interesting information for those of us who want to give our characters original abilities and thought I'd pass it on.

Huh. That is good stuff. I guess if you look at it most of those abilities kinda follow our favorite archetypal characters as well... That and they tend to keep us alive.

Well, in my personal opinion the reason why people select the first two (Invulnerability, and strength) Is because the forum is deeply based off of combat and not sneaking around... If you noticed, stealth is one of the least on combat... People want skills that can give a fair challenge to in fights, thats why you don't see x-ray vision, super hearing, enhanced olifactors -and just about anything that will enhance the perception attribute- on the top is because no one is going to be doing a lot of sneaking. I mean how is a high perception going to help out when the opponent has heat vision, speed or invulnerability? Not that much... People want characters that survive, not ones that die...

In my personal opinion, it would take longer to level up in one of the higher perception abilities then in speed or invulnerability... Because they are more used in combat situations

That is one of my reasons why it would be nice to have a forum restart sometime down the road...

Fledge is right about one thing. Alot of the unused, or rarely used abilities appeal to me when thinking of a new character, but I hesitate to use them because they wont neccisarily help to defend or keep my character alive.

Not saying I agree with a forum re start... thats a last ditch consideration if the whole site has gone to pot and everyone who is going to be participating agrees. However I think we need to have more oportunites for characters without combat skills. Spies, sneakers, characters who rely on wit rather then strength. The forum is mainly about the combat, nothing wrong with that, but it can leave characters, or future characters out of the action simply because they die from one blow by a guy who has invunerability lol.

*shrugs* I think the main reason Fledge is because no-one has seriously tried what you are suggesting. There have been a few attempts but to be honest, none of them have actually been that well executed. In my opinion it is all a matter of play style. Alot of people, myself included, don't seem to have the patience to play a stealth character.

Seems to me that the reason stealth characters aren't used is simply because they require a very different style than a combat character and a lot more planning and creative thinking. I'm sure a stealth character could be just as deadly as a equal level combat character when used properly.

I guess thats true, but my observation is that its harder to level up on stealth unless you can kill and still remain invisible :\ Which is very difficuilt because you go through quite a number of rolls that will come close to getting yourself revealed... Jason was hard to keep in stealth because if I tried to cover up his tracks it would of effected the rolls greatly, and even though that I didn't I still got caught :\

Killing is not the only way to level up. Sure it might be fast and easy if you can nail a whole bunch of people at once, but the fact is, you gain experience everytime you use a skill in an RP with another player. It's the way it works.

And as for getting caught...it mainly had to do with getting noticed in the first place. His ICly shooting an invulnerable critter and getting noticed was really not the fault of the system.

True, but I prefer getting skills now instead of waiting a LONG time...

I think he just summed it up. Patience is the essence of stealth, so a stealth character isn't for you in the first place if you mind waiting for good things.

That's life Fledge. Most worthwhile games and activities take time to develop. The fact that characters have low skills at the begining and have to play differently is all part of the enjoyment of the forum.

Yep. Some skills and abilities simply take more creativity -- it seems like it's all about the combat because that is what people make it about. Use some creativity and some wit. Figure your way through things. It really does work.

I've gotten a few characters who weren't meant or built for combat but they don't have a place on the forum, unless they supply others with weapons or targets. Vicky was supposed to be a detective of sorts, but she's my first Character and I want her to live (Though I can see many of the other characters on this forum really want her dead) so she has to stay out of trouble and level up in less dangerous and therefore slower ways. Same with Ferret she wasn't supposed to be a combat character but if you can't defend your self you end up very dead very quickly.

Well, running around and throwing business cards everywhere with your name on it isn't exactly a smart policy if you want to stay out of the spotlight. It is all about how you play the characters.
