I've always been interested in taking some kind of intro comp sci course because it looks good on resumes and is just useful in general. However I've never taken it before and I'm not the most math/sci oriented person. Are there any good courses that are somewhat easy and not filled with comp sci/engineering majors? |

The only from-scratch computer science introduction course Cornell offers (CS 1110), unfortunately, is mostly populated with first year engineers and computer science majors. However, I think this would be your best option as it is very light on the math and science and sticks to mostly word-based problems. There is a certain degree of math required in computer science no matter what, though. The only other similar alternative I can think of is Computer Applications in the Hotel school, but that is a 2-credit joke class that teaches you how to use word and other incredibly basic stuff. |

Ehhh.....I took CS 1110. Let's just say I took that my first semester, and my GPA STILL hurts from the grade I got in that class. The problem I really feel is that I took a full 4-credit Java course (1110) and took 1132, a 1-credit MATLAB autotutorial, and let's just say I feel a lot more confident in my own ability to crank out MATLAB code than I do with Java. Why am I REALLY kicking myself? I'm a mechanical engineering major, and the full MATLAB course plus 1-credit Java autotutorial is recommended for MechEs. >_<* |

Yea I heard things like that for CS 1110 that's why I'm looking for other courses. Maybe something in the info department? |

The INFO intro comp class is just an abbreviated version of the engineer class. You attend the same lectures, but do less work. I don't know if that's changed since I took it, though. |

if you really want to take an intro CS course, take the MATLAB one instead of the java one. CS1112 is much easier than CS1110. |

1112 isn't really useful for non-engineers, though...and OP said he didn't want a math/sci heavy course, which 1112 definitely is. |

Agreed. As a MechE, my classes now are pretty MATLAB intensive, and I use it a lot for Dynamics to solve differential equations that are either ridiculously tedious or flat out impossible to do by hand. |

Are there any prerequisites for the matlab course? my major recommends CS 1112 or 1110 or BEE 1510. so out of these 3 1112 is easier but more math/sci intensive? I guess I'm stuck with 1110 then because I haven't taken differential equations.... |
