Barbara * 20 Pull-ups * 30 Push-ups * 40 Sit-ups * 50 Squats 5 rounds for time 3rd out of 4 benchmarks for the Tabata experiment. Really wasn't feeling it before I started this one. But needed to get it done. TBH this was one of the toughest CrossFit workouts I have done mentally. Last time I did this, I had only done 3 rounds 'cos of time constraints. For some reason, getting past this point today was a mental battle. The thought of quitting entered my head numerous times - wasn't ever really an option though Deadhang pullups. As it turns out, knocked a fair bit off the times for my first couple of rounds. Times: Round 1: 5.45 (Last time 7.53) Round 2: 6.40 (Last time 8.44) Round 3: 8.40 (Last time 9.23) Round 4: 7.51 Round 5: 7.34 Pukie was hanging around, just managed to keep him at bay by entertaining his friend Dizzie for a while. I lay down on my bed after finishing this meaning just to chill for a few mins. BAD MOVE. Slept pretty much right through 'till around 3am (9pm-3am, 6 hours, more than I usually get in a while night!). Must've been tired. Of course, this threw all notions of PWO and PPWO out of the window. Idiot. Which is why I am up and doing stuff now, and posting at such a random time. I am wide awake and have plenty to catch up on that I meant to do yesterday evening, lol. |

Tennis tonight. Playing with pressureless balls which play quite heavy. Couple that with the cold and damp weather making the balls play even heavier. Add to that the fact that I was mistiming far too many shots. End up with a nice worsening of the tendonitis which seems to be sporadically affecting both my left and right arms ATM. |

This morning: CrossFit Warmup x 2, all 10-15 reps Going to list it out this time to comment on a couple of things: Samson Stretch Overhead Squat: Feel like I am slowly improving form each time I do this. Is starting to feel more and more "natural" Sit-ups: Much easier in the gym with something decent to hook my feet under than at home where I do all my tabata experiement stuff. I think I am doing myself a disservice with the sit-ups at home. Back Extensions *missed out pullups, as they were part of proceeding workout* Dips Unusually tough. Think I have been neglecting my chest a little, strength wise. Hardly bench anymore, and been focusing on DLs, squats, shoulder presses, and sometimes pullups for 5x5/strength work. Will crack into some weighted dips again this week. ------ A short burst of BB snatch and kipping pullup practice ------ Then yesterdays WOD: Fran (20kg) * Thruster 20kg * Pull-ups 21-15-9 reps, for time 9.43 Deadhang pullups (mostly overhand) Sub 10 minutes - which, as noted above, was my short term goal for this. Was the only person in the gym first thing this morning, lol

This morning: Last Fridays WOD (14th Dec) Friday 071214 Shoulder press 1-1-1-1-1 reps Push press 3-3-3-3-3 reps Push Jerk 5-5-5-5-5 reps Left my workout diary at home, so from memory: Shoulder Press: 1/45kg | 1/47.5kg | 1/50kg | 1/45kg | 1/45kg PB with the 50kg - at last, over 3/4 BW (78%) The 50kg took a few seconds to straighten up, lol. Took the weight down for the last two reps to keep the concentric phase fast, especially cos I was moving onto more explosive movements. Push Press: 3/45kg | 3/47.5kg | 2F/50kg | 3/47.5kg | 3/47.5kg Need to be more explosive with these, really push up onto toes. Push Jerk: 5/20kg | 5/30kg | 5/35kg | 5/37.5kg | 5/37.5kg Very much a case of honing technique on these ATM, so kept the weight at levels I could really focus on form with today |

Random Weigh-In: 10st 3.4lbs/65kg. So basically maintaining the same weight, give or take a kg or two here or there. Strength going up. Cant decide if I'm getting leaner, less lean or staying the same. I guess if strength is going up and weight is staying the same, that's all that really matters. |

Tore it up today
Apologies in advance for the essay I'm about to write, I'm just in that kind of mood Was undecided about whether to train or not tonight but felt restless. So started messing with BB snatch / DB snatch / squat cleans at home, just with a broom stick. Dunno what it was but I suddenly felt a huge burst of energy. And with a combination of messing about and watching videos of various lifts, I suddenly had a brainwave about squat technique. Tried a few things out with my broomstick and my squat started to feel a whole lot more comfortable. Felt an overwhelming desire to go max squat at the gym, hehe. So thats what I did. Back Squats: 5/65kg | 5/65kg | 5/70kg | 5/75kg | 5/75kg Did a few things differently. Squatted barefoot for the first time. Really used my hips, and drove the power from my heels up through the quads. Bar positioned slightly differently, a little lower. It all kinda came together, and I felt this in my legs more than I ever have before. Really chuffed with today. The weights are still sh*te, but 75kg=115% BW squats reps today, so I'm slowly getting there. And TBH was more chuffed with the fact that things are now starting to come together on technique.... Overall, an increase of 10kg on my 5RM Did max squats 9 days ago, and at that point 75kg was my 1RM! And in early Nov, I couldnt even lift 75kg, I failed at 72.5 back then At this point still felt like I had loads of energy. Then last Saturdays WOD: Saturday 071215 Weighted pull-ups 1-1-1-1-1-1-1 reps Chinups (Weighted): 1/21.25kg | 1/25kg | 1/30kg | 1/35kg | F/40kg | F/37.5kg | 1/35kg Erm...last time time I did this a few weeks back, my 1RM was 21.25kg! So started on that today, and flew up, proper chest to bar chinups. Felt cheeky so kept on adding 5kg, lol. 35kg = 53% BW so happy with that for today
Was damn close with the 40kg too... Not much rest between attempts either - didnt feel like I needed it. Haven't done weighed chinups between attempts, yet my 1RM shot up today. And the last time I did it I needed more rest in between attempts. All I've been doing is LOTS of (deadhang) pullups in various intervals and quantities in my WODS. Which proves something to me Still didnt felt spent at all, so did: BB Bench Press: 9+1/65kg (BW) This was meant as a max set for Bench Press with BW on the bar. 9 + 1 refers to the fact that the spotter helped me with the very last bit of the last rep Nice wee finisher - 1 set taken just a little past failure Then 5 mins skipping practice and a handful of burpees Job done. Thanks for reading, hehe

Oh, I forgot, tried some jump squats with the bar for the first time to warm up for my 5x5, lol. They were fun I was literally bouncing up and down with energy before the squats, so I thought I'd put it to good use  Think they helped me in terms of getting the muscles used to exploding up through the lift. Might make them a regular part of my squatting warm up. |

This evening, did todays WOD: Sunday 071223 Complete 3 rounds for time of: Row 500 meters Bodyweight Bench press, 30 reps Went to gym and tested a couple of things out - never lifted BW+ without a spotter before, didn't have one today, so checked out the Brand X site for scaled versions. Had to go down to the "Pack" version to have a weight less than BW, so did that: Pack: Complete 3 rounds for time of: Row 500 meters 3/4 Bodyweight Bench press, 15 reps (3/4 BW = 48.75kg, so did 50kg) 14.20 This was the first time I have rowed in a LONG time. First row was around 1.48 give or take - inside Athletic Standards Level 1 (1.55), gonna gun for Level 2 (1.45) over the next few weeks. Got slowed down by numerous things such as running between upstairs (C2) and downstairs (bench), setting the C2 for 500m each time and stupidly getting my foot stuck in the strapping after my second row . And of course not having a spotter so I had to break the bench sets up more to be safe. God, that sounds like a load of excuses  There are no excuses, and I have none  But will be trying this with a spotter/helper when I have a chance to see wassup

Chet I felt like that a wee while back and it is not nice! But a wise man said to me (Kempie) just let it go and do what you can for as long as it takes to come back!! You will come back, just dont force it because that just causes a lot of stress believe me. If it is just caused by eating too much, then stop eating so much you greedy bastardio!!!!! |

Thanks LRH
And that's some good advice.Shame I didn't read it before I went to the gym *looks sheepish* TBH I don't feel stressed, I feel energised. So all is good ---- Today: The Boxing Day WOD: Wednesday 071226 "CrossFit Total" Back squat, 1 rep Shoulder Press, 1 rep Deadlift, 1 rep Back Squats: 3/60kg | 2/70kg | 1/77.5kg | 1/80kg | 1/85kg 85kg = PB by 10kg
= 130% BWShoulder Press (Military): 3/40kg | 2/45kg | 1/50kg | F/55kg | 1/52.5kg 52.5kg = PB by 2.5kg = 80% BWDeadlifts: 3/100kg | 1/140kg | 1/152.5kg | F/155kg 152.5 = PB by 2.5kg = 235% BWTotal = 290kg (BW 65kg) 300kg WILL be mine very soon The workout was done pretty quickly too - didn't realise the gym was closing at 17:00 over these few days... After I had finished my DLs, the owner if the gym, who had been around the area tidying up during my DLs, asked me if I was competitive powerlifting!!  I said no, that I was just doing my own thing. He asked me if I'd ever thought about it, and I said no, not really. So he told me there was some powerlifting champion dude in tomorrow, and said that I should come in and have a chat with him! I think he should have seen my squat - then he wouldn't have said a word LOL  Made my day that he even mentioned it anyway. |
