This is how to build a character and get started. Here's the raw facts to start with-

One- Starting point allotment, used to purchase ranks is 600 A detailed backstory can be used to earn bonus points for further allotment (Generally less than 100)

Two- Its important to know that characters can be advanced. Karma can be spent at a 1-1 ratio to raise any ability one point. To go from Feeble to Poor, costs two Karma, to go from Typical to Good is 4, to go from Good to excellent is 10, and to go from Monstrous to Unearthly is 40. That's right. To go from Uneartly to Class 1000 is 900 Karma. (It might take a while to move up certain levels, but trust us- the original system was far less forgiving. And the Karma doesn't have to be all spent at once. you can raise a rank slowly, five points here, two points there, etc. You'll get some odd rank numbers, that might not give any immediate benefits. Some abilities are based off the exact number on your rank, and those will gain immediate benefits from any point spent.)

The General Check List

1. What kind of being is the character, and how did they get their powers (See Ultimate Powers PDF for the lowdown on the different options)

2. What are the character's ability ranks? (See Welcome Guide- This is FASERIP)

3. What is character's starting Health, Karma, Resources, and Popularity (Variable Abilities, see Welcome Guide)

4. What powers does the character have?

5. What talents does the character have?

6. What is the the characters story? Behaviour? Personality? All these details that make a character spring to life.

Origins

Your five most basic answers to this question are Mutant, Altered Human, Hi Tech Wonder, Robot, and Alien. There are a ton more options in the ultimate powers book, but these five options will cover most of the common possibilities. I am including a converted to board version of most races in a later post in this thread.

Mutants, have altered genetic structures, usually from birth, that generally manifest in adolescence. These are different from the normal member of your species. (Most of the X-Men)

Altered humans usually had some sort of external interference that are responsible for their powers. This exposure can be chemical, radioactive, magic, cosmic, or even something unknown. (Spider Man)

Hi Tech Wonders are normal humans whose powers are based on their advanced technology. Please note that powers that are based on technology are offered at half price due to being null and void without access to the technology.

Robots, are machines computers, cyborgs, androids or golems, all robots must have been created by someone or something.

Aliens are creatures from other planets, dimensions, and even times. this includes Inhumans, Eternals, Asgardians, Atlanteans, Kryptonians, Martians, and Olympians.

Primary and Secondary Abilities

Your starting points can be spent on your characters Primary Abilities, your Powers, Your talents, and Special Inventory Items. A good portion of those points should probably go to your Primary Abilities, with the next biggest portion going to your powers.

All points are spent on a one to one basis. Twenty points in Fighting gives you an Excellent rank, spending a whole 50 would give you an Amazing rank. The same price applies to any purchase used with these points- one to one costs.

After purchases are made, apply any bonuses based on your origins story. More details can be found in the Ultimate Power's book for the more advanced races. Two things to note here...

- Hi Tech Wonders increase Reason by one rank
- Mutants increase Endurance by one rank.
-- Breed Mutants (If your parents were mutants, and you were raised with other mutants) you also gain a free rank of Intuition
- Minimum Reason Rank for a Robot is Good.
- Aliens can raise any one ability score +1CS
- Altered Humans can raise any Ability +1

Variable Abilities

Health and Karma are easy.

The Health Score is all your FASE stats added together.

Sum your RIP scores to get your starting Karma score- This starting Karma may be spent during character creation, but be warned- it may take a while to earn more, and you wouldn't want to be left without it in emergencies.

Your Resource Rank can be increased with your starting point allotment, or can be determined by the staff based on your character background. Remember, not everyone is a Wayne, Stark, Richards, or Luthor. Excessive, unjustified wealth will be frowned upon as power gaming.

Popularity will be determined by the staff upon character approval. Its a combination of background, and a few other factors such as whether your Identity and Origin are known publicly, and records.

Powers, Magic, and Talents

After Abilities, this is the most point heavy area. Powers and Magic are very similar. Each have their own threads dedicated to their details, but here, we will say that they are purchased very similarly- Point for point. You may have as many powers as you like- but remember, that you only have a limited amount of points to spend. More powers, mean less points to spend on each one. Balance is important.

Talents
Ultimate Talent Chart

Talents indicate learned skill sets, and are widely available to everyone. Each Talent has its own effects, we'll talk about them a little bit later. As a general rule, if the talent doesn't say what it does, assume that its effect is a +1CS to checks related to the talent (Pediatrics, Piloting, Sciences etc.)

A talent has a flat rate cost of 5 points. They are not ranked, so you cannot take a talent twice to stack its effect. Related talents can stack, however.

For example- Bow Talent offers a +1CS to using a bow in combat. Marksman talent adds +1CS to any weapon using an Agility FEAT. Since, the Bow uses agility, a person with both talents would have a +2CS shift when using a Bow in combat. (Remarkable would go to Amazing, in this example. It would only go to Incredible with one but not the other.)

A very few talents are more inclusive than others, as a general rule, if one talent gives you bonus talents, then its cost is 10 points (Military and Law Enforcement talents are one of the few examples of this) In addition, these talents are required to be represented in your background in one way or another, compared to regular talents which are recommended to be represented in your background.

Limitations and Weaknesses

Every person has a weakness. Even normal humans have weaknesses (we call them allergies, poisons, etc). Every characters is required to have a weakness of some kind. In the next post in this thread, I will discuss weakness in more detail.

Limitations on Powers
(Optional)

Powers can be boosted in rank (without cost of points) if you sacrifice some of its utility. For example, if your control of fire is reduced from at a range to just the area immediately around you? Your rank could go up from Incredible to Amazing. All limitations must be balanced and approved by a Judge. When you present your profile, please mark limitations you would like to add to a power, and the Judge will tell you how much the limitation is worth on the power. The greater the inhibition, the larger the jump when it does work.

Background

Arguably, this is the most important part of your character. This is what brings the character to life, and should be treated with the utmost care and precision. A well written backstory can yield bonus points to your character, as established by the staff. It is also required for us to properly give you your starting resources and popularity.

Please, have fun with this. This is what makes this experience fun, tell us about the character, here's a list of ideas of things to cover.

  • Names, Nicknames
  • Age? Birthday?
  • Secret Identities? Who knows it? How do they keep it a secret?
  • What's their personality?
  • How do they feel about their powers?
  • Where do they live? Where did they grow up? Why do they live there?
  • How do they earn a living?
  • Any hobbies or pastimes?
  • Why did they choose to becom a hero/villain? Why do they present themselves the way they do? Why did they pick that costume/alias?
  • Who are their close friends and relatives?
  • How long have they had these relationships?
  • How do these friends earn a living?
  • Where do the friends go?
  • Do the friends know about their activities? How do they feel about it?
