The scene opens up on...a right hand's fist, it's a hand that's seen some wars judging by how hardened it looks and the scars on it. Though the main defining feature of the fist that gives away who this hand belongs to and shows it isn't just some random's hand is the red athletic tape that's wrapped all around the palm and wrist still. A zooms out reveals that Joe Stanton is crouching outside a night life establishment somewhere in Japan, likely after the first night of KAMIKAZE Pro's Champions' Gauntlet Tour. While Aaron Gresham, Josh Kennedy, Masatake Kawamata, Hanako Takeuchi, and Rebel Manson and more are inside...Joe is sitting out here. "You know, I made a declaration of sorts at the beginning of this year that I was going to further cement my place in the industry this year. I was going to travel around the world, fight in any promotion that would have me, and fight against the very best that they have to offer if I could, and prove something all over again. I'm not usually one to talk myself up but I'm practical, I know how good I am, I know what I'm capable of inside that ring. I know that when this fist meets skull for nearly fifteen years it has meant that the match is over." Referring to the fact no one's ever kicked out of the Shoryuken, the Scarlet Speedster stares at his hand and he frowns lightly to himself. Something's on his mind. It's obvious by the way he's talking, by his general demeanor, by everything really. "But if I'm being honest, this past month or so hasn't been what you'd call kind to me. I've stumbled more times than I care to admit and I've come up short more times than I generally find acceptable for myself. I've made mistakes that I know I'm better than and it's cost me matches that I know I could've won, which in turn has cost me opportunities in the long run. Worst of all, in some cases it's led to me letting some people down that I consider my friends, my brothers in arms." The memories of his matches in various promotions roll through his head, the Rail Rumble, the IJPW Strong Crown Tournament, the War Horse Championship Tournament, the four-way tag team match he just came from. Each loss stings a little in his mind and makes him squint his eyes slightly when he talks about how he feels about the losses. "I could beat myself up over it but what would that do me? Can't rewrite history, but you can change the future, you can pick yourself up and learn from those mistakes so that you're better the next time an opportunity rolls around. You can show your friends that you're worth a damn. And, this upcoming match for Death Trip Wrestling is affording me the opportunity to do all of those things." Shrugging his shoulders, Stanton doesn't seem to like there's no neat answer for his thought. He continues to keep his eyes transfixed on his fist. "I might not be a full fledged official member of the Badd Breed, but I've always been there when Holland and his group needed a little extra hand in dealing with issues. I've known and respected Holland for longer than most people I know in this industry, and Erickson while not as long I respect her just as much as I do him. She's proven herself time and time again to be as tough as just about anyone I've ever seen in this business. Together they're one of the most destructive couples I know in this business." More of a charter member, Stanton thumbs his nose with his left hand when he brings up Erik Holland. The memories of their numerous fights immediately spring to his mind. He fondly talks of Tiami and him. "And, we stand against the...Odd Squad, a somewhat unassuming name for a threesome of talent and raw destructive power the likes of which they possess. Johnny Vachon has a bit of a reputation in wrestling for what he did to the Filth Parade but to simply call him a traitor to them and move along would be overlooking him at best. Severely underestimating what he's capable of at worst, he is like a cockroach with the level of durability he has and his capacity to survive some of the gnarliest matches that would force a lesser man to retire. He's not someone to take lightly." Joe frowns at the announcement of the trio's name, it's straightforward but it doesn't exactly seem to fit them either in Joe's opinion. He grimaces at the thought of Johnny Vachon, shaking his head at the notion that he's just a turncoat and nothing else. "Dick Devereaux is one of the weirdest cases of a man that I feel like is a big name in the industry yet I also feel like some people straight up don't know who the hell this guy is. But anyone with half a brain that's been paying attention to more than just a promotion or two knows that Dick is a piece of work that only could survive in professional wrestling. That for as big of a douchenozzle as he is he's just as much of a threat to any given wrestler, especially when he's put into a hardcore setting like the one we're in. He's taken down some big names in this business through the course of his career, and I'm not looking for him to have the opportunity to add my name to that list." The Scarlet Speedster speaks of Dick with some reverence till he intentionally emphasizes the man's name. "And, Lobo...?" Stanton pauses and genuinely looks like he's trying to think of what to say about the third member of the Odd Squad. Eventually he shudders and he actually looks away from his fist, glancing off to the side and he speaks bitterly when he talks again. "I fucking hate clowns." Which is a very long story...for another time. It's on this somewhat humorous note that the piece ends. |
