The scene opens on the IJPW Death Crown Championship around surely a mystery man's waist, the shot pans upwards to show the Grindhouse Wrestling Tag Team Championship on this person's waist too. Gradually it works its way up the t-shirt that the person is wearing to their face, to the signature pair of sunglasses they're wearing. A zoom out reveals Joe Stanton is standing outside a wrestling school, PARADOX Wrestling School, the place that started it all. It's a fairly chilly day in Chicago, not that the Guy in Shades seems to particularly mind. "I've been very fortunate in my career." His left hand strays to run over the championships that are strapped around his waist, a friendly enough smile forming on his lips. "In all aspects of it, promotions I've been given the opportunity to work for, the positions they've given me the chance to earn within them, the caliber of opponents I've fought." That smile turns a little less friendly, a little more blood thirsty when he reflects on the things he's talking about. Even mentioning his past opponents brings memories flooding back to him, gets his heart pounding, gets that itch starting. That itch that he's never been able to keep scratched. "But I've never forgotten where it all started." Stanton half turns so that he can look at the brick wall he's standing in front of and the sign that's somewhat over his head. "I've never forgotten doing ring crew, bouncing from couch to couch of whatever friend would let me stay the night, the shit paydays from shit promoters and the dick veterans that wanted me to pay my dues. Which was code for not actually paying your dues but them having an excuse to try to bully you. Try to push you around." Needless to say, by the shaking of his head and the disapproving tone he gets the Scarlet Speedster isn't a fan of some of the more old school methods of hazing. "And, I think back on it a lot. I think back to those days and I think about how far I've come, as a wrestler, as a person. I think about the mistakes I made like every rookie makes and how I've learned from them. I think back because I very easily could have headed a very different path in my career that never would've seen me be where I am today." Bobbing his head, Joe confesses his feelings on his start in the business. He scoffs when he mentions how different of a person he is now than he was then. In large by what he's been exposed to in the business. "It's a humbling thought, especially when I find myself in the situation I do in Death Trip Wrestling. In a tournament that's spanning multiple nights where I will fight an array of opposition, some of them I'm familiar with in the ring, some of them I'm familiar with by reputation and some I'm only familiar with by name pretty much. Sure, I've been doing my studying, researching what I can about those I'm stepping into the ring with. But I look at all of the names across from mine and I think about how I'm some dude from Chicago and..." He nods and he practically beams when he gets on the topic of the Carnage Carnival. His left hand counts along to the categories of opponents he's been booked against. Waving it, he acts as if he can see all of them right in front of him at this very second and he scoffs when he trails off. "It's surreal, you know? Even after all these years, nearly fifteen, even after all the championships I've won, it's surreal to think that some dude that occasionally snuck into this building to sleep is facing these people. Facing this mixture of world class, globe trotting talents and fresh, hungry talents that are looking to prove they're in the same league as the former group of talents. It's surreal to think that I have the opportunity to prove my mettle and earn myself a shot at the DTW World Championship. That I get to try my hand at the monolithic challenge that is the Carnage Carnival." Pausing for a long beat, Joe shrugs his shoulders when he can't come up with anything better than to call the experience surreal. The One Punch Man turns back to face the camera filming him and he continues to talk about the talent pool he's up against. His smile becoming a full blown shark toothed grin when he talks about the prize waiting for the winner at the end of all of this. "But that's not all, I have a responsibility in this, a duty really, because I'm not just some DTW World Championship hopeful. I'm a man that represents another promotion too, I'm a champion in of myself." Shaking his head, he wags a finger at the camera and he pats the IJPW Death Crown Championship around his waist when he mentions his responsibility. "I may be one of two crown holders but I'm as much the face of IJPW as the other guy. My actions, they reflect the promotion. My words, they are held to a different light because of what I am in possession of. My success in the Carnage Carnival is not just mine but IJPW's too, my failure in it is theirs too. I have the prestige and integrity of an entire wrestling promotion on my shoulders every single time I step into that ring during this tournament." Reaching behind him, he unhooks the IJPW Death Crown Championship from around his waist and he holds it up so that the camera can get a real good shot of it. With the hand holding it he jabs himself in the chest with his index finger when he explains how he sees his role in the DTW Carnage Carnival effects IJPW. "It is with the hopes and dreams of IJPW, with IJPW's fans in mind that I walk into this tournament not just excited about the fights I'm going to have. Because I am, that goes without saying. I'm aspiring to show that IJPW is a promotion that is to be respected and held in high regard by the wrestling community at large. That it is not to be seen as a flash in a pan or something irrelevant but the start of something very wonderful. The start of something truly special in an industry where there are hundreds of promotions popping up every single day." Bringing his other hand up, Joe acts as if he's literally holding the hopes and dreams of the promotion & its fans in his hands. He balls his right hand into a fist, holding it tight when he declares what he intends to show in the Carnage Carnival for IJPW. "For I have traveled a long way to fall short of the fantasy, the moment when the DTW World Champion and the IJPW Death Crown Champion meet in the ring." It's while he's saying this closing statement that the camera slowly zooms in on the IJPW Death Crown Championship. The title belt is the only thing in the shot by the time it fades to black. |
