The scene opens on the IJPW Death Crown Championship, gradually zooming out to reveal a pair of hands holding onto it by one end of the strap. The zoom out little by little gives the audience an idea of what's going on, Joe Stanton sitting down with his head down on a makeshift seat that looks suspiciously like a flipped upside down trash can. The Scarlet Speedster is dressed casually for this rainy, dirty alley way that he appears to be sitting in, jeans, black hoodie, leather jacket, the only sign of his ring gear being his taped up right hand. The scarlet athletic tape stands in such sharp contrast to the rest of the scene. "Carnage Carnival Night 12." Stanton states plainly, thumbing at his nose with his left hand and taking in a sharp inhale. He rubs the palm of his hand against his stubbly chin in quiet contemplation. "It wasn't that long ago that I stood in front of a camera not unlike this and proclaimed my intentions going into the Carnage Carnival tournament." He sways the IJPW Death Crown Championship a little between his legs. "I was walking into the Carnage Carnival with more than just the intentions of having a good time like I normally would in a situation like that. It was more than about the fights, about the challenge that the list of opponents I had and potentially had in it could offer me. The prize at the end of the tunnel of having a shot at the DTW Championship while tempting wasn't even what was weighing on my mind when the carnival was rolling into town. It was about this." His left hand pats the IJPW Death Crown Championship's main plate, sending it swaying even more than before. "It was about representing the IJPW and the IJPW Death Crown Championship in the Carnage Carnival, it was about representing them well as a flag barrier for the company. Initially it went well too, I like to think, at the start of the tournament I was doing pretty well for myself and feel like I was putting out performances that served to represent what IJPW is capable of. That served to elevate IJPW and continue to raise the prestige of the promotion and this championship that's sitting in my hands. I'd like to use the excuse that I got overconfident but then I'd be lying about what happened and I'm not making excuses for how everything turned out." He jabs the main plate of the championship when he talks about what it was about for him. His voice having a tinge of passion, and a tinge of pain to it. Stanton shrugs his shoulders when he talks about how his first few nights in the Carnage Carnival went. His mood visibly darkening when he has to continue on this timeline. "After that though...there's no two ways about it if I'm being blunt, things fell apart for me and I was never able to put them back together for the rest of the tournament. I embarrassed IJPW and this championship with some of the losses I suffered, and not because of the caliber of my opponents but of my performance, when I know I'm capable of doing better than I did. I let IJPW and its fans down. I let myself down too." Trailing off for a second, One Punch Man breathes through his teeth and he continues with a sigh. His right hand gripping the title belt in its grasp tightly when he confesses how he feels it went for him. Waving a finger at the camera, Stanton clarifies that he doesn't consider this an embarrassment because of his opponents but because of himself. "If I'm being honest, with all due respect to my teammates this match on Night 12 stings as badly as any of those losses I suffered. Knowing that if I could've done better, that I should've done better and I'd be still representing IJPW in the main event of this spectacular show instead of stuck in this bizarre tag team match. It feels like insult to injury for my shortcomings in the Carnage Carnival. Especially with who is sitting across the ring from me in this tag team match." Stewing over how this makes him feel, Stanton lifts the IJPW Death Crown Championship up so that he can give the title belt a proper lookover. He speaks with some venom in his voice when he criticizes himself and it only goes away when he shakes his head in disappointment. Half grumbling the last few sentences he says, practically grinding his teeth when he makes mention of his team's opponents. "It's true I feel I've lost some face..." Trailing off, the Scarlet Speedster pushes up off of his seat and he gets to his feet. His hood still obscuring his eyes and most of the upper half of his face honestly. He starts walking through the alley towards the camera at the end of it that's filming him. "And, to be frank this match isn't going to be the thing that fixes that. But there's a lot riding on this match and I'm not about to wallow in misery over the past when I can learn from those mistakes for the future. Nor am I the type of person that's going to purposely let people down when they're counting on him like my teammates are to do my part in this match. I'm not going to let a decent enough guy like Rob Sharpe down or a sweetheart like Hanako Takeuchi." Shaking his head, his resolve trickles back into his voice after deciding this match isn't going to fix things but a loss here could make it a lot worse. Holding the IJPW Death Crown Championship up to face level, Joe walks and talks about how he's willing to be a team player. Purposely not mentioning The Menagerie by name due to not knowing them as well as the other two. "Two of the men that caused those losses in the Carnage Carnival are standing across from me in this match, two men that now have a claim to my championship. Two men that I will do everything in my power to ensure don't have any more of an argument for the Death Crown Championship than they already have before this match. Two men that I'm hoping I have some time alone with in this match so that I can return the favor to them. Two men that I..." With his left hand he holds up two fingers and with a determined streak to his voice talks about Lobo the Clown and Teiji “The Terror” Shintaro. There's a bit of a growl to his words hen he's talking about having alone time with them. Like he's on the verge of some real fire but he stops and he breathes, calming himself. "Two men that I won't let me lose sight of their other three equally dangerous partners. Because you can be the best wrestler in the world but in a team match setting like this? It doesn't matter if you can't work as a team, if you're unable to cooperate with everyone else around you for the greater good. You see it all the time in wrestling, the whole does not equal the sum of its parts and yet you see the other end of the spectrum too. You see wrestlers that arguably alone may not have caught the attention of the industry unite together to become something greater than them or anybody else they share the ring with." Back on track with his resolve, Stanton says it with conviction though it feels just as much a declaration to the audience as a reminder to him. He explains why he's going to try to work as a team with everyone. "And arguably they already have an advantage over us with the Ultraviolence Union and the Odd Squad each being teams, each with team members that are familiar with each other. Sure, the Union and the Squad themselves might not be one big happy family but that little bit of teamwork could be the tipping point if we're not careful. It gives them an edge, no matter how small, over us. For we might have a couple on our side and Sharpe, Takeuchi and I might know each other on a casual level but we're not a unit, there isn't months of teaming together experience there." A frown forms on Joe's face when he mentions the slight advantage parts of the opposing team have over them. "That's why on May 22nd I ask for all egos to be checked at the door, for whatever negative feelings any of you may have for each other or for me be left in the back. Because we're going to need to be able to work as a team. We're going to have to coexist and operate like we're five fingers of one hand. Because otherwise we're looking at just another bittersweet symphony..." Stanton points at the camera, pointing through it to his teammates as he calls out to them. He pleads for their better natures to take the lead for this tag team match. Pausing momentarily before he utters what the alternative is for them, shaking his head and walking out of frame to end the piece. |
