Between February and April 1817 there were several marriages of men of the 85 Regt at Chester St John the Baptist, so presumably they were garrisoned locally in Cheshire.

17 Apr 1822 Enlisted at London for Grenadier Guards aged 27 years for Unlimited Service
21 Jan 1828 Discharged from Grenadier Guards
This timeline has all the appearances of a man having lost his wife and/or family?
I've not found a record of a Gloucester baptism for their son John, and he gives conflicting birthplaces of Chester [1871] and Leicester [1881]. If the above Colin was his father, it's possible he might surface in Perth, Scotland?

William Fletcher x 2

Hi all,
Ages since I logged in, I've been ill and unable to do much, but now I'm back researching my husband's ancestors, the Fletchers, and I've hit a major problem which I can't seem to work out and could do with help please.
I've traced back to a William Fletcher born 1781/2 - I can't find his baptism, but think it may be 28th Dec 1782 at the New Meeting House, Moor St. Unitarian , Birmingham, but I can't check this until the new Library of Birmingham, opens in Sept. He married Ann Shirley 15.12.1806 in the Wolfords and died aged 37 and was buried in the Wolfords 24.5.1819. I know this William's parents were William and Hannah, which I've confirmed from land deeds and a will held at Gloucester Record Office.
Most of the Fletcher family is to be found at Great Wolford, Warwickshire and this is where the grave of the older William is to be found - listing him as having been buried 8.8.1833, aged 87. This is where the confusion comes in, as there is a William Fletcher baptised 31.3.1752 in Wolford to John and Mary Fletcher and I had been told by another researcher that this was the baptism for the older William, but the age is not right - he would not have been 87 at his death, but 81. I've checked the actual Register entry and it is very clearly 87. However, there is another burial entry 20.2.1835 for another William Fletcher, aged 83, which would give a birthdate of 1752, which suggests his parents were John and Mary, but if this is the case, I can't find the parents for the other William, born c. 1746.
To add to the confusion, I have found two marriages for two William and Hannahs! The first marriage is William Fletcher bachelor of the parish of Wolford, marrying Hannah Halford of the parish 1.1.1772 and then a later marriage of William Fletcher widower of Evenload and Hannah Bliss of Cheltenham 26.5.1781. I would assume that it was the same William remarrying, but the groom's signatures are very different on the two marriage certificates.
There are baptisms of various children to William and Hannah in Evenlode, dating from the eldest, John in 1781 and then there are baptisms listed in Wolford for the other William and Hannah, the eldest being Mary 5.12.1784 (though "my" William would be her elder brother).
Is it possible please to sort out this muddle?
Regards,
Barbara

G'day to anyone who still visits DaF!
It feels very lonely on here these days, and some of you have messages in your in-box that you don't seem to have noticed.
I'm fearful that my grey cells will shrink from lack of stimulation or 'frazzle' from frustration.
Can I
anyone?
5 minutes away from another
and it's only 10:17 am!

I'm still tearing my hair out looking for hubby's Grandmother
but having another look at the 1911 Census yesterday I found an Annie Amis who was living in East Ham, London as a servant .
The householder is William Cottrell , 288, Central Park Road, East Ham. Annie is aged 19 yrs from South Wales, Parish unknown. I don't have subs to Ancestry or FMP any longer so can't check her out. This might keep you busy for a bit Jean
I'm clutching at straws now.
Hubby's Granny was named as Lillian Annie Amis on her wedding cert in 1912 but all searches have ended with absolutely nothing, we have no idea if she had any siblings and no-one to ask sadly. This is just another shot in the dark but I won't give up trying to find her.
Hope you can find her

Hi
I am researching the Austin family and have got back as far as the 1700 in Eccleshall. I have a Joseph Walters Austin living in Croxton in 1841, where I would like your advice is regarding a christening record for 1781 found on family search. It is for a Joseph Walters and the mother Ann Walters is the only parent mentioned. Ann Walters marries Willam Austin in 1783. I think I am right in thinking that it seems that Joseph Wlaters is illegitamate and then takes the name Joseph Walters Austin after his mothers marriage.
As I have no proof that William Austin is the father, I would appreciate your thoughts as this would mean an end to the Austin line.
Best regards
Steve

Hi Folks
I need to find a photo of Sir William John Ferguson Davie. I have searched the internet but cant find one. Any suggestions?
Story has it that my great grandmother worked on a large estate, she was housekeeper/cook not too sure what. She was born in Sandford Devon. She had 5 children out of wedlock and two of them (including my grandad) was suppose to be the son of the estate owner????? I Davie is the name that has been passed down and It was said that my Grandad was the image of his dad.
Any help would be lovely.

Hi all,
Can anyone help me find the spouse/parents of Henry Sherwin born Alvaston, Derbyshire c 1811 acc to 1851 census?
I had thought him to be the Henry Sherwin ch. 1810 to James and Ann of Alvaston, but in looking for his spouse, find this may be wrong.
In 1841 Henry seems to be a single man, but in 1851 he's a widower with two boys, Henry (jr.) born circa 1845 in Greenwich, Kent and Frederick George born circa 1848 in Woolwich. I can't find christening records for either of these, though there is something in the bnd for a male Sherwin born 1845 in Greenwich. He may be the Henry John Sherwin who dies age 5 in Plumstead St. Margaret Kent in 1859.
The only marriages I can find for a Henry Sherwin between 1841 and 1845 both take place in Derbyshire. One Henry marries Charlotte Taylor in Chesterfield in 1841, but they turn up in the 1851 census still in Chesterfield. The other one is in 1844 in Derby, less than 4 miles away from Alvaston and a good bet for the date, as Henry Jr. was born the following year. The spouse is also a Charlotte (Poole). But the igi shows this Henry's father to be named John, which threw me off as I was expecting James. On the other hand, if Henry John Sherwin is Henry's son, his father could well be a John. But I can't seem to find the John Sherwin whose daughter-in-law was Charlotte Poole. In any case, this Charlotte Sherwin does not show up in 1851 or 1861 which makes me think she is the missing spouse.
One thing that might connect Henry to James and Ann is that there was a Joseph Sherwin ch. 1826 to them. He is likely the one who later turns up in the census with children born in Kent (Joseph J, b. c 1853 Woolwich, and Ann b c 1857 Woolwich).
Any ideas on how to sort this out?
Is it likely that "John" is a typo for "James"?
best,
Roddy

I am needing help once again, Helping my friend to do her family history. Family stories are that they are related to the Earl of Kimberly. They have the name Wodehouse coming down as a second name through the generations. I have found a marriage with a Currie and a Wodehouse but cant find the connection to my friends family tree. I have looked at the peerage charts but cant find anything on there. I have a feeling the connection is Raikes Currie and Hon. Laura Sophia Wodehouse -just cant find it.
I have a Robert Currie , find the marriage and his father is Willaim Currie. Robert was a windower when he married Caroline. 1851 census he is single and an apprentice age 18. Cant find his first marriage. Got to be inbetween 1851 and 1856??? It is William I am interested in. To see if I can find this link.
This is where I am at the moment and dont know much about his father William.

Hello.
I am researching my ex husbands family tree for him and our children. I have joined the Devon F H S in the hope of finding other interested parties. No joy, no-one searching for Cornish.
They seem to originate in Moretonhampstead, Bovey Tracey and North Bovey and i have a lot of info from 1837 onwards and some from pre registration but am now stuck.
So are you searching for Cornishes from Devon?
Thanks for your time,
Jyllks

Caroline Maria Quirola

Caroline Maria QUIROLA (CMQ) born, according to 1861 to 1901 Census, between 1826 and 1833 in Genoa,Liguria, Italy.
I came upon CMQ when her son William married a distant relative, Caroline AYLING (1844 - 1904) of Worthing, Sussex.
The first sight of William was in the 1851 Census when he was listed as William THOMPSON (7) born abt 1844 in Slough. CMQ was similarly a THOMPSON (25) married and wife of a Merchant's Clerk (Mr THOMPSON didn't feature in the census). I then discovered Caroline Quorsila THOMPSON (widow) married a John Freeman RENNEGER on 8 Nov 1858 (GRO: Dec 1858 City of London Vol 1a Pg 209). Moreover, I could find no death of a Mr THOMPSON that might match, particularly as the family had lived in Slough, Windsor, Gravesend, Slough again, Ealing and Reading, between 1851 and 1861, all based on the birth places of the children.
Back now to William who on 22 Apr 1867, married Caroline AYLING, under the name of William Quirola DEVONSHIRE (Family Search IGI M147943) in Brighton, Sussex. Back checking, I found that he was born William Quirolla DEVONSHIRE at Sals Hill, Slough; however, he was christened William Quinola Kempe DEVONSHIRE on 18 Aug 1848 on Colechurch (poss Southwark - Family Search IR C058401) when his father was posted as John Kempe DEVONSHIRE and mother Caroline Maria DEVONSHIRE. For the rest of his life, William was listed in census as William THOMPSON, William D THOMPSON or William Devonshire THOMPSON.
Despite searches, I could find no marriage of CMQ to a DEVONSHIRE or THOMPSON, nor deaths of either gentlemen. Mr DEVONSDHIRE had clearly sired three children with CMQ by the 1851 census namely William, Arthur, Louis and probably Amelia Caroline who features in the 1861 census under the name THOMPSON.
My brickwall is built around the early UK life of CMQ, Messrs DEVONSHRIE and THOMPSON, did they ever marry her and why did William change his name from that given at birth? Grateful for any sleuths ideas.
PS The name John Kempe DEVONSHIRE seems to feature both in Cornwall and Devon but can't tie one to be William's possible father.

One more try?
I've tried before to fine Ada Jones but won't give up.
She was born Ada Brookes in Australia in 1885. Parents - Thomas Henry and Jane Brookes. This family returned to England and Ada married Alfred Henry Jones in 1904. The newlyweds went back to Australia in 1905. Alfred died there in 1908.
Believe that Ada Jones returned to England and appears in 1911 census at Tything, Worcester, occupation District Nurse, age 26, widow, after 4 years of marriage.
The next records of her are passengers lists for a voyage to and from New York between Sept 1929 and Jan 1930. She gave her occupation as a nurse and residence at Torquay.
Appears her parents lived in retirement at Newton Abbot. until 1936 and 1941.
If anyone has any suggestions how to find information about Ada Jones, I will appreciate hearing from you.
Thank you

I am looking for the ancestors of Amelia McPherson, born circa 1848 in Gravesend, Kent.
She is on the 1861 census with her mother, Caroline (described as a mariner's wife) and her sister Ellen, 2. Both the girls were born Gravesend. The father, John McPherson is not with them. I can't find the family in 1851 or 1841. By 1868, Amelia had married and is no longer with her family.
In 1871, the parents first names are not given, there are just dashes, but Ellen is with them and now has 2 younger brothers. Also, it is difficult to make out where John was born. I think it said Chester, Chelsea in 1871, but Leicestershire in 1881. In 1861 he is a mariner and in 1871 a labourer on the railway and for the parish in 1881. By 1891 he is dead and Caroline is a widow residing with her eldest son, Arthur J C McPherson, 27, and his family, including a sister, Ada, 18, who was not with the family in 1881. I found her (1881) as a 4-year -old visitor in the home of Rosina Hutton who was born in Colombo, Ceylon and whose children were born in Middlesex. No idea what connection there is there.
I'd like to find them in 1851 and 1841, and to find the marriage, as I don't know Caroline's maiden name (sorting out the garbled census entries, she seems to have been born circa 1827 in Thundersley, Essex, near Rayleigh).
I haven't found any promising leads for John in either Cheshire (which I assume is what was meant by Chelsea) or Leicestershire. The only marriage of a John McPherson and Caroline Finch at a suitable date was in Birmingham, Warwickshire in 1845 which seems out of the way. Also, I can't find a Caroline Finch born circa 1827 in Thundersley, Essex. In fact, I can't find any Carolines born circa 1827 in Thundersley or Rayleigh which seems odd.
I don't have access to ancestry except at the library, so my notes may be inaccurate.
Can anyone help cast light on the McPhersons>
best,
Roddy
